Last year on the playa, I saw these couple of people who had these cool things on their bike.... it was bright (LED of some sort?) light that seemed to be refracted through a crystal towards the ground, so it broke up into a cool field of many little dots all around them on the ground for a few feet. It was pretty much the coolest thing ever.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Do you know where I could get them, or even make something like this?

Start with the selection at Think Geek, maybe the Laser Pod near the bottom is what you've seen.
They are currently out of stock, but you can do a google search for other vendors.

Fri, August 7, 2009 - 10:06 AMSo, yay, cheaper option. That link led me to the keyword I was missing (which was 'diffraction' rather than 'refraction', ah science)... which then lead me to Ebay, for laser pointers with diffraction caps to make Starfields and the like.

Neat! Winging its way to me now, all I need to figure out now is how to rig some kind of thing to hold the button down (I bet it's a press-to-turn-on thing, and not a switch), and a way to mount it to my bike. -

You can mount one or more on your bike so they hang free and shine onto the ground. The effect is many red, green and blue dots on the ground and there are several flashing modes. -
