Though I am not going to spearhead next year, I would like to help next year’s crew in making it happen, both in terms of sharing what I’ve learned organizationally and in helping people know the infrastructure that we’ve gathered. Also, if you have any suggestions on how things could be run differently, especially in terms of load in/load out/ set up/break down (the burden of which once again fell disproportionately on a small crew who expected to be a larger crew), please post on the burningcontact tribe. I think we brought together a great community and had some fabulous offerings that changed some lives in really positive ways, and it would be great to see how it can continue.
In terms of Contact Camp happening again, there are some deadlines to keep in mind. First off, to do it right in terms of getting the word out effectively and keeping the burden of organization and infrastructure manageable, things really should be in motion by the new year.
Secondly, there is the issue of infrastructure storage at Max’s place. It has to move from there. Unfortunately, the impact on her and her space was too much during the load in and load out, so another space needs to be found for the infrastructure. If a group of organizers could come forward to take responsibility for the materials stored there by late winter, that would be great (meaning arranging for an efficient and focused crew to come and get things from her place during load in for the 2008 Burn and arrange for storage elsewhere afterwards). Otherwise, it being necessary for it to move, I will have to give everything away to the best homes I can find sometime in the spring.
let's see what we can do... anyone want to be a part of Contact Camp 2008 in some form or another, continuing as an evolution of what has been or starting over with a new form?

Re: Contact Camp 2008?
Fri, September 7, 2007 - 11:04 PMhi everyone,
first off a huge big thanks to everyone for all the hard work, especially to the load-in and set-up crews and the strike and load-out crews. those folks put in *days* of solid work, often under challenging conditions, so much gratitude. also thanks to all our cooks - the food this year was incredible, a huge improvement from last year. and having a kitchen dome was fantastic.
for next year, i would definitely like to be involved in the organization of camp again. i have worked with other groups where there is a greater division of labor in putting together events and this seems to be an effective and more sustainable way to organize people. when a huge burden falls on the shoulders of a few, burnout is more likely to occur and it is more difficult to pass on the knowledge gained only through experience. the organizational model that i have worked with in the past includes one or two main leads/coordinators and then several area leads, each of whom has their crew of volunteers. off the top of my head in no particular order, for contact camp the area leads might be (1) infrastructure, camp layout, building (2) food buying, kitchen, cooks (3) work shift coordinator, crew manager (4) workshop/classes coordinator (5) load-in/transportation (6) strike/load-out (7) storage/camp property (8) special events. the main coordinator(s) could handle budget, registration, timelines/scheduling, and communications between leads and the greater contact community. i'm sure there's other stuff to think about here, but the general idea is just to spread the burden out in clearly defined areas with one or two people taking responsibility for coordinating and bringing it all together. of course, this model only works when there are enough folks wiling to take on that level of commitment and responsibility. who is up for it?? i am...
another approach might be to be less ambitious in what we are providing. for example, having a kitchen and community dinner every night is fantastic, but requires a lot more in terms of time, effort and money. how would it be if we each fended for ourselves in that respect? or, is having community meals important enough that we are willing to do what it takes to make it happen? are there other ways in which we could be less ambitious and if so, what are we willing to let go of and what do we absolutely want to keep?
anyway, those are just some thoughts. would love to hear what others are thinking.
by the way, i am not really on here. i swear. you're just imagining i am. if you want to contact me directly, it would be better to email me at lumagoo <at> gmail <dot> com

Re: Contact Camp 2008?
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 12:56 PMCarrie just told me yesterday that she is into helping again at about the level she was at this year,
Sam (who did infrastructure in 2006) is interested for 2008 (don't take that as a commitment, yet, though).
I could see myself doing workshop/event coordination if winter roles around and it looks like i will be going again in 2008.

Re: Contact Camp 2008?
Thu, September 13, 2007 - 11:30 AMWell, that's a pretty good start for now. How many days away is it again?
An addition to the list of roles I suggested above: pre-playa fundraising events.
I know it's early days yet (but I'm already excited!), so if anyone else has even a vague interest in getting more involved next year, it would be good to hear.

Re: Contact Camp 2008?
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 2:21 PMThanks to all who make contact camp such a great place to be in BRC, and thanks to Karl for spearheading and holding it together so constantly through it all.
This was my first burning man though I have been involved in organising and participating in many similar sized camps os contact village (60+people) in the UK.
Some of the positives for me were;
1. the food - Amazing job carrie. I love the community and care that sharing food offers. Having a meal a day together made the camp gell together in my experience. Real community gathers in kitchens.
2. The pack in and pack out teams. Arriving to a set up samp on the Monday was amazing. Being part of the pack out team was a real special bonus for me - time to be and share and journey together. We had an extra 6 days in total being part of the 'tribe' and some great times on the road, lakes, rivers and hotsprings.
3. The bus and the kit. - Gathering a working set of kit takes time and effort. I loved the spaces set up by the camp and really valued the parachute to camp under.
4. The fridge!
Breaking the jobs up to manageable portions is quite important Morpheus I agree, but too many heads can lead to communication breakdown! 3 team leaders or perhaps 5 at most is feasable, ore than that and problems uccur to frequently in my experience.
I hope that the camp will return next year, and I would love to travel again to BM 2008 and be a part of set up / strike down.
Such a great adventure,
Cheers, Eight -

Re: Contact Camp 2008?
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 8:53 PMJohn Barret also just wrote me an e-mail to say he is planning on returning next year.
On another note, I have had the desire to do a Contact Camp at Sierraville Hot Springs. I was thinking that it might be nice to organize it around the weekend before the set up weekend of Burning Man. We could use the structures from Contact Camp at Burning Man.
An advantage of that date would be that there would be one less load/unload of stuff, as we would simple pack it up from Sierraville and then move it to Burning Man. Another advantage would be for people traveling from afar, having the two events back to back would make attending both easier. Also, it would give us a chance to liesurely check out what we might have a lack of while we are still in easy urban range.

Contact camp at Sierraville Hot Springs.
Great idea.
As a traveller from afar, I vote for this back to back!

Re: Contact Camp 2008?
Sat, October 13, 2007 - 1:09 AMI miss you all already! Good thing I am in San Diego drumming and dancing my ass off! Seriously though, this year was amazing. I don't know if I'm going next year. I might go to Hawaii or Costa Rica. But I can't bear the thought of being in the Bay Area during BM, so I would have to go Somewhere if not BM. I love the idea of Sierraville. Eight, thanks for the appreciation. Karl, I just don't know how we could do it without you! My body is still on playa time, but I must go to bed.
