Improvisation: Performance as Exposure
The training of Contact Improvisation is a physical practice that includes increasing range of motion, awakening awareness and clarifying intention. We learn through kinetic feedback with another as well as through exploring different patterns of movement and how all of our senses lead us into dancing. Touch is not enough. Preparing to perform requires more than awareness, it asks us to be seen and to see. In this workshop, we will focus on meeting truthfully and directly the unexpected. Contact Improvisation will be our entrance into the physicality of our images and applications of Body Mind Centering (r) will fine tune us to the mechanics of our instruments - our bodies. Weight, mass and breath become movement, become landscape, become story, become question, become idea. We will play with heightening our senses and perceptions, amplifying our awareness to expose more of our interior, making the invisible visible to play with time and space. Witnessing, reading, writing and the voice will be used to further engage and enliven our imaginations and for discovering new challenges and risks. How do we ready ourselves for performing and who is the being in the body? The workshop is accompanied by live music of Italian guest musician Roberto Bellatalla (double bass and other).

K.J. Holmes is an independent dance artist based in Brooklyn NY who has been exploring improvisation as process and performance since 1981. She teaches, choreographs and performs at festivals, universities and venues throughout the world, as a soloist and in her collaborations with artists such as Simone Forti, Image Lab (Lisa Nelson, Karen Nelson and Scott Smith) and in the work of Steve Paxton. Her influences include Contact Improvisation, Body-Mind Centering (r), Yoga (certified teacher 2007), Authentic movement, Ideokinesis, Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques, Martial Dance, world vocal studies and contemporary dance and theater. A 1999 graduate of the School for Body-Mind Centering, K.J. is adjunct faculty at New York University Experimental Theater Wing/ongoing teacher Movement Research NYC/has a private practice in Dynamic Alignment and Re-integration/and is currently studying Sanford Meisner acting technique at the William Esper Studio in NYC as well as developing an evening length piece entitled This is where we are (or take arms against a sea of troubles) which looks at where the body and language meet.

Registration is Open for Camp CONTACT 2008

Registration for Camp CONTACT at Burning Man 2008 is now open!

Contact Camp has been a fixture on the playa for the past three years, and we're bringing it back in style for 2008. We've got some new infrastructure, a distributed leadership team, and a new on-line registration system. We plan to better coordinate work party participation and work shift participation prior to the event so that we're not spending valuable time on the playa figuring it all out.

Camp CONTACT will host 80-100 Contact Improvisators for the ten days spanning Saturday, August 23rd to Monday, Sept 1st. We'll start off by building a kitchen, a common area and the dance spaces. We'll also have shade structures to keep your tent cool, with the possibility of other amenities. We come to the playa to offer the gift of Contact Improvisation. Mornings, we'll be able to jam in Burning Man's Center Camp; afternoons, we can teach or take beginners and advanced classes. Each evening we will share in community meals and then glow in all that Black Rock City has to offer at night, including some of our own jams.

Camp Update

Dear Burning Man Contact Campers,
Greetings from CI36! I'm here at Juniata College in PA taking in
some great classes and having some great dances. When I have breaks
I've been getting things organized for our camp this year. I've been
picking Laura's and Karl's brains,
getting a new website updated, setting up a new registration system to
better coordinate our efforts on and off the playa and talking to
some of our camp staff to bring everything together. I'm excited to
hear of everyone's interest and energy to bring Contact Improv
back to the Playa for a fourth year and am looking forward to having a
great camp.

The first news is that Karl, as infrastructure lead, will be
organizing a Camp CONTACT work party on
Saturday June 28. Attendance at this will count for one of the two
sessions we're asking all camp members to
participate in, and if you attend you get free admission to on Sunday
June 29 to Contact workshop/Jam on the S Fork Yuba River
lead by Karl. If there are specific infrastructure ideas you have
for this year, please let Karl and I know
so that we can make plans and budget for them. Possibilities include
making a burn barrel, new/improved bike racks and a better shower
system. I've also heard from a number of you that you'd rather not
use paper plates, etc, which I'm in agreement with. If we do this,
need to set up a better system for cleaning, which means collecting
and getting rid of gray water, and getting a better sink. If people
can help with this please let Karl know.

Once we get the registration system up and running we'll ask people to
register for this and other work shifts, Lead Chefs and dinner
preparation assistance, as well as the main event. In the mean time,

so december is here, new years is soon. Time to start in on making it happen, if it is to happen.

As Lorenzo suggested, I think it would really need more of a group visioning, communication, and effort for it to happen this year.

Does anyone have any thoughts about that or want to initiate anything around it?

Contact Camp 2008?

Though I am not going to spearhead next year, I would like to help next year’s crew in making it happen, both in terms of sharing what I’ve learned organizationally and in helping people know the infrastructure that we’ve gathered. Also, if you have any suggestions on how things could be run differently, especially in terms of load in/load out/ set up/break down (the burden of which once again fell disproportionately on a small crew who expected to be a larger crew), please post on the burningcontact tribe. I think we brought together a great community and had some fabulous offerings that changed some lives in really positive ways, and it would be great to see how it can continue.

In terms of Contact Camp happening again, there are some deadlines to keep in mind. First off, to do it right in terms of getting the word out effectively and keeping the burden of organization and infrastructure manageable, things really should be in motion by the new year.

Secondly, there is the issue of infrastructure storage at Max’s place. It has to move from there. Unfortunately, the impact on her and her space was too much during the load in and load out, so another space needs to be found for the infrastructure. If a group of organizers could come forward to take responsibility for the materials stored there by late winter, that would be great (meaning arranging for an efficient and focused crew to come and get things from her place during load in for the 2008 Burn and arrange for storage elsewhere afterwards). Otherwise, it being necessary for it to move, I will have to give everything away to the best homes I can find sometime in the spring.

let's see what we can do... anyone want to be a part of Contact Camp 2008 in some form or another, continuing as an evolution of what has been or starting over with a new form?

Hi all

I just found these excellent knot instructions online for the two main knots we used in putting up the parachute tents...

For the Trucker's Hitch (used for tightening down the pole and parachute)

Hi all

here in this thread is an ongoing list of what we need. feel free to add to this thread if you have anything that you could bring or if you think of another need that you think we might not have.

Some of these things, if we do not have, we will go and purchase. others we could do without but would be nice.

lacking at this point...

a second propane stove and tank
folding tables for kitchen
shelving for kitchen
pots and pans (we have some, both in personal and industrial size, but could use more of both)
kitchen ware (Serving spoons, ladles, spatulas, dish towels, etc)
refrigerator (power has come together, so it would be good to have a fridge for keeping perishables from perishing ... this would facilitate more greens and such. In teh end, i think it would also be more resource efficient than using ice from ice camp)
swamp cooler (the bus will be converted into a chill space, with mylar on the windows and futons filling the space. It would be really great to have some sort of swamp cooler to keep it cooler for the group.)
power tools for building and set up
lumber (plywood, boards, etc) for building shelves, shower set up, bicycle racks, etc)
rope and cordage
extra rebar stakes

feel free to add to this list or to let us know that you have it. for big things, like a fridge, we can pick it up either in Kincaide's truck or the bus.

Load in/load out in Grass Valley

so the load in and load out in Grass Valley is going to be at Max's place. seethe bottom of this post for directions and Max's phone number

Load in is Friday August 24th... start in the morning, leave for Reno when we are done

Load out is Tuesday September 4. when we finish, we head out to the hot springs for R&R.

PS direction's to Max's place
From Hwy 49 in Grass Valley take 174 Colfax exit and get on 174 (Colfax Hwy) towards Colfax.

Go about 2 miles, passing the Union Hill school on left, and turn Right on Rattlesnake Road.
Go about 1.5 miles and take a soft left on Brooks Rd. (There's a sign just before it that says 30 mph Zone Ahead.)
Brooks bends immediately to the left but you need to go straight onto Tiger Lily Lane, which is a narrow paved road between two trees.
Go over three speed bumps and take your first right on Tall Timber. (All roads are marked with signs, don't turn on anything that isn't--it will be a driveway.)
Follow that one or two tenths of a mile. Tall Timber bends to the left twice (stop sign the first time), the second time it becomes View Forever.
Immediately after that take your first left onto Sivers Lane, a very small dirt and gravel road.
Go down the hill and around the pond and when the road forks, go up to the left.
Go straight to the top (do not turn into the steep drive half-way up on the left) and you are at my house. There are two posts with copper caps with the number, 19646 Sivers Lane, Grass Valley.

Total Lunar Eclipse: August 28 2007

The Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total solar eclipse. Partial eclipses, annular eclipses, and the partial phases of total eclipses are never safe to watch without taking special precautions. Even when 99% of the Sun's surface is obscured during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the remaining photospheric crescent is intensely bright and cannot be viewed safely without eye protection [Chou, 1981; Marsh, 1982]. Do not attempt to observe the partial or annular phases of any eclipse with the naked eye. Failure to use appropriate filtration may result in permanent eye damage or blindness!

Generally, the same equipment, techniques and precautions used to observe the Sun outside of eclipse are required for annular eclipses and the partial phases of total eclipses [Reynolds & Sweetsir, 1995; Pasachoff & Covington, 1993; Pasachoff & Menzel, 1992; Sherrod, 1981]. The safest and most inexpensive of these methods is by projection, in which a pinhole or small opening is used to cast the image of the Sun on a screen placed a half-meter or more beyond the opening. Projected images of the Sun may even be seen on the ground in the small openings created by interlacing fingers, or in the dappled sunlight beneath a leafy tree. Binoculars can also be used to project a magnified image of the Sun on a white card, but you must avoid the temptation of using these instruments for direct viewing.

The Sun can be viewed directly only when using filters specifically designed for this purpose. Such filters usually have a thin layer of aluminum, chromium or silver deposited on their surfaces that attenuates ultraviolet, visible, and infrared energy. One of the most widely available filters for safe solar viewing is a number 14 welder's glass, available through welding supply outlets. More recently, aluminized mylar has become a popular, inexpensive alternative. Mylar can easily be cut with scissors and adapted to any kind of box or viewing device. A number of sources for solar filters are listed below. No filter is safe to use with any optical device (i.e. - telescope, binoculars, etc.) unless it has been specifically designed for that purpose. Experienced amateur and professional astronomers may also use one or two layers of completely exposed and fully developed black-and-white film, provided the film contains a silver emulsion. Since all developed color films lack silver, they are always unsafe for use in solar viewing.

Unsafe filters include color film, some non-silver black and white film, medical x-ray films with images on them, smoked glass, photographic neutral density filters and polarizing filters. Solar filters designed to thread into eyepieces which are often sold with inexpensive telescopes are also dangerous. They should not be used for viewing the Sun at any time since they often crack from overheating. Do not experiment with other filters unless you are certain that they are safe. Damage to the eyes comes predominantly from invisible infrared wavelengths. The fact that the Sun appears dark in a filter or that you feel no discomfort does not guarantee that your eyes are safe. Avoid all unnecessary risks. Your local planetarium or amateur astronomy club is a good source for additional information.

In spite of these precautions, the total phase of an eclipse can and should be viewed without any filters whatsoever. The naked eye view of totality is completely safe and is overwhelmingly awe-inspiring!

Sierraville HOtsprings Wednesday September 5 ... Contact Camp decompression

Hi all

I am imagining that we will be happy to have a decompression after the unload in Grass Valley (which will happen on Tuesday September 4), so i imagined it would be nice to all head out to Sierra Hot Springs for a day... about an hourand ahalf drive from Grass Valley... take the bus out there and soak for a day before heading off n various directions.

Also, perhaps a side trip to the S Fork Yuba River for a swim would be nice before we begin the unload or after to celebrate the finish...

Contact Camp 07 FOOD REQUESTS

Hello, everyone, hello. I am Ari, your Lord of Inventory. (Word up to all those who attended in '06 and '05.) I'm not planning to attend this year, but I'm still on board to organize food shipping out from Berkeley. Last year we were under budget AGAIN, so I think we'll be entertaining some more expansive notions of what food can be like at Contact Camp - or making it cheaper, either way.
We'll have lots of food in stock for people to make their own meals and snacks, and we'll also have large common meals every night and some mornings.

Here's a general notion of what foods will be stocked in the collective pantry:
veggies and fruits
tempeh and tofu and miso
OJ/other juice concentrates
dry staples such as grains, legumes and noodles
snackables such as nuts and nut butters, dried fruit, chips and dips (dehydrated)
chocolate
coconut milk
oil, condiments, sweeteners, and seasonings of all kinds

tea, including kilos of yerba mate
almost anything that fits the standard - ecologically sustainable, easily packed, not prone to rot, and popular among campers

Here are some things we WON'T be getting (and you can get them yourself):
meat
milk
eggs
prepared soymilk

And here are some things we COULD get, if I hear lots of support, or if they have a sponsor*:
Powdered cowmilk, soymilk, or goatmilk
cheese
canned coconut water
coffee, alcohol, other drugs (nothing "illegal", silly)

*As sponsor pays up front for a bulk quantity of something that may not be popular enough for the whole group to prioritize it, but that may nonetheless turn out to have been worth buying in bulk. Ask me if you're curious, or if you want something controversial.

Hi all

here is where to post about rideshares to the playa and back. at the end of this post is a list with names and e-mails to try, as of August 12. this is the info that I have as of this point.

To note, the bus is leaving Sam Francisco on Thursday for Grass Valley and load-in. it leaves from there on Friday late evening for the playa. The bus returns to Grass Valley on Monday for load out and then will go to Sierraville Hot Springs for a little decompress on tuesday night or Wednesday morning. on Thursday night, it will return to the bay area.

Also, Kincade will be leaving the SF BAy Area on Friday evening for the playa. he has space for about 5 or 6 others plus gear Carrie, I think that is your and Alex's option...).

re the list below, if it says "set" or "bus" it means that I think you don't have needs and don't have a ride to offer. If it says "need" or "offer", that's obvious. If it says nothing, I know nothing. If date of arrival is not listed, safe to assume it is for MOnday arrival. there are some who are coming for weekend set up. there are also a few who are arriving late.

post on this thread of you need a ride. ALSO, please post on this thread if you have one to offer!!! I think we will be short on rides offered for monday arrival.

Hi all… this is Karl from Contact Camp

Less than 2 weeks before some of us arrive on playa… yahoo!

So this year, we have been aiming to return to a smaller camp, and it looks like we will be doing that with about 60 people. We have money in from about 55 people and another few dozen still deciding.

We also will have MORE infrastructure, meaning a really together and easy to live in space for us!

I keep hearing of people who are planning on contact camp who have not contacted us offically yet or registered. If you know of any, do have them get in touch with us ASAP.

This of course does not include people who will be in community with us but camping elsewhere, it also does not include the sister camps that will be near us. We have planned a little neighborhood with

HumYum (groovy camp of contact friendly folk from Arcata)
Heebeegeebee healers (they give free massages and offer classes in yoga, tai chi, meditation, etc)
Gamelan X (they do the gamelan procesions and lead ketcak every day at 2pm)
Astral Headwash (free hairwash and scalp massage)
Rhythm Wave (Sweat YOur Prayers every day, twice a day).

Also perhaps joining us are
Xtracycle group (from Nevada County doing Green demo projects)
Quantum Martial Arts (They may be doing martial arts classes via Contact camp every day... yes, I bumped into Rachel and last minute, she is coming to the playa again)

For load in, I will drive the bus from the bay area on Thursday morning or mid day (the 23rd. we plan to work mostly starting Friday morning and then leave Grass Valley on Friday early evening, picking up a few people in Reno airport.

If you are getting yourself there separately from the bus to load in, check out directions on the burningcontact tribe… don’t try Mapquest… they send you to directions that don’t exist.

***RIDING THE BUS TO THE PLAYA***
I would ask that people put in some sort of donation for the bus transport… $10 -$25? Bus goes…
SF – Grass Valley on Thursday, August 23rd
Grass Valley to Black Rock City on Friday, August 24th
Black Rock to Grass Valley on Monday, September 3rd

***WEEKEND ARRIVAL AND SET UP***

We have space for 38 people to come for weekend arrival and set up. The way it works is that you will not be allowed in before Sunday at midnight unless you have a special pass. I have 38 of them to hand out. these allow you to get in before Sunday at midnight, but not before Friday at midnight.

go to the Burningcontact tribe on tribe.net for rideshares, if you have a ride to offer to share gas costs and help someone get there or if you need a ride.

Rideshares will be a self organizing process, as opposed to someone doing it for you.

note: we seem to have more rides needed than offered. Check within contact camp, but also search farther afield, and if you are thinking of driving at all, it would likely be very useful!

*** NEEDS OF CAMP***

another propane stove and propane tanks
tables and shelves for kitchen
lumber and plywood
water barrels (50 gallon type)
things to beautify the space
long extension cords
a refrigerator (we have more power this year)

so, space under the big shade tents is on a first come, first served basis. More incentive to get there early…
***BIKES***

It is VERY USEFUL to have a bicycle on the playa. Very suggested that you bring one, ideally a cheap beater and not a nice bike. Also, bring a lock. They do get stolen. This is a city, remember.

If you have an extra bike, it would be appreciated by some of the folks flying in from afar, so do bring it.

*** THE FOOD ORDER***
…goes in on Monday. If you could have your registration money in by then (if not in already), it would be very appreciated. Last chance to get in on the big order with requests and suggestions. Go to tribe for offering requests and suggestions

***HEAD COOKS***
We still need one or two. The duty of a head cook is to make the meal plan for one night and be on the cooking crew that night. The head cook will have 2 to 4 assistants to help with making the dinner, ready by 6PM.

One more request for y'all. We (Melanie & I) need to get from SF to Grass Valley to be able to load up (I think on the 23rd). Can anyone give us a ride? The usual: feeding driver food, ga$ and conversation etc...

If anyone has spare crash space in SF, that would be terrific.

Ride(s) needed for 2 of us

Hey all

That magickal time of providing people with green pieces of paper, verbal hilarious communications and shovelling carbon-based exlife forms into drivers mouths... in exchange for slashing off months of walking from the Atlantic Ocean to the desert is back.

We need a lift from Nevada City (I assume we are helping gepåcken there after BM) to somewhere in Ca. - my Melanie wants to see Northern California and its environs...so do I.

Oh, and getting to BM from San Fran to help set up. We have muscles and arent afraid to use them for the good of all Burnkind.

Any idea on evolving to this stage would be highly appreciated.

this just in from Burning Man about early arrivers (Sat/Sun) (BM note at the end of this post). the gist is that we will have limitations on how many we can bring in on the weekend. I don't know how many we can bring in. I will post here as i know more.

At this point, i have for early arrivers the following list. If you know you want to be there for early arrival weekend and aren't on this list yet, let Munir or I know. If we have more people that want to be there for early arrival than we have passes for, then we'll prioritize
1) people who can be there Saturday
2) people who let us know first.

We had far too many early arrivers last year congesting the towns of
Empire and Gerlach. The BLM doesn't like this and neither do we. It
actually threatens the future of our event! Also, we're still building
BRC (as are some of you). We're not ready for everyone to be there in
terms of public safety and sanitation.

We will be issuing limited numbers of early arrival bar code passes
via email to theme camps for their legitimate setup crews only. Pass
bearers will of course also need an admission ticket. It will be up to
the theme camps to distruibute the passes. They are not associated
with individual persons, so last minute changes of pass
holders can easily be managed by theme camps, when necessary.

Just like an "e" air travel or concert ticket, once scanned, the
barcode shuts that access number out of the system. That means if
someone foolishly makes copies of the passes for their friends, and
the copies hit the Gate before the originals, the copies will get
access and the bearers of the originals will be "S.O.L."!

Remember, for general admission, our Gate opens Sunday night at
midnight. Please plan accordingly.

I just learned that kidsville will be at Coral Reef and 5:30. The closest I've lived to center camp. We'll be setting up 'tag-a-dome' again, in Camp Raging Homones (aka Teenville) and your all welcome to stop by for graffiti, shade, coffee, sodas, snacks, face paint, and good company.

If you'd like to be a head cook and don't know what you want to cook, let me know that too! Otherwise, we will put meals together, and will be recruiting head cooks on the playa, and they can work with what we have chosen.

just a note on What Where When

this is the printed calendar for Burning Man.

If you want to do an official event at Contact Camp that is in the
printed calendar, you must have a description to me by Tuesday
morning, July 17, when i will be entering them all.

get me title of event, event description, times that might work for
you, your phone so i can reach you to talk last minute about it.

what where when posts at Contact Camp are generally for events that
are more highly contact focussed or higher profile.

We will also be doing other events that we organize once we get there
and post on our daily event board. it's pretty high traffic for
interesting folk, so these events tend to go off very well, even
without the printed calendar listing

we generally have the contact classes at 1:00 and 3:30 posted without
instructor names and divy them up when we get there.

Firefly... they are lids for nalgene bottles that have LEDs in them

Itchin for Contact Camp Kitchen Cooks!

Greetings,
This is Carrie (you may know me as Acequia or Bam Bam), your humble
kitchen coordinator for Burning Man '07. We are beginning the collaboration
of getting our camp's kitchen organized for this year. We are seeking
head dinner cooks for every night of Burning Man. We have eight slots to
fill, Sunday night through Sunday night. What would be helpful (but not
necessary) is that the head cooks have some experience cooking for a large group.
As a head dinner cook, your role is to:

-Oversee the preparation of dinner for 60 people (you will have 2-3 helpers)
-Arrive at about 3pm to on your cook day to start the meal
-Coordinate with me before BM on what ingredients you would like to use
and connect with me the day of your cook to be briefed on what we have and
what needs to be used that day

The kitchen will be ultra luscious this year, we will have a kitchen dome!
If the joyous service of being a head cook sounds like something you'd

Decompression at Sierra Hot Springs after Burning Man?

Hi all

I was thinking that it might be nice to plan a couple days of decompression after Burning Man at Sierra Hot Springs. I'm imagining that after we do the load out, we can head over there on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

Let me know what you think. If we get a critical mass of people (8-10?) who want to do that, then we can rent the mainlodge there for a night or two... would be $20-$30 a night.

Optionally, we could also doa little decompress camping out on the the Yuba river.

June 14/15 Work Party in Grass Valley!

So, based on feedback, i was suprised to find people more available during the week than on the weekend, so...

We are doing a work party ion Grass Valley, California Thursday/Friday June 14/15!

We need to go through our stuff and do a bit of inventory and repairs, out in Grass Valley, about 2.5 hours east by north east from San Francisco.

I'm guessing that we could use something like 80 person hours of work for this... that could be 5 people putting in 16 hours, 10 people putting in 8 hours, etc. MOre people, less work per person.

Can you come out to help?
Do you have transport there and back, or do you need a ride?

As a little incentive...
1)work breaks to go play and swim out on the Yuba River
2) Wednesday night, forthose who want to arrive the night before, there is the regular Contact Class and Jam. I'll teach, and so if you are coming to work, do the class and jam for free! They are a really great crew in Nevada County!
3) a convivial time with some great people!

Also, I am likely going to either be doing a weekend CI workshop in Grass Valley June 16/17 and/or a trip out to Sierra HOt Springs. let me know if you want to be a part of any of that.

CI, Sex, Intimacy, and Contact Camp 2007

So some conversations have already started to happen and questions are being asked, so, here I start the process of conversation on Tribe

What sort of atmosphere, etiquette, understanding do we have at Contact Camp around issues of sexuality, intimacy, and contact improvisation?

This is an especially relevent question for Burning Man, which is a place where many go specifically for a place of radical permission to experiment withdifferent ways of being in the world and where sexuality is definitely a thread of experimentation ... for some, it's their central focus and for others, there is no interest in going there, but there is a general spirit of cohabitation in a place of permission. We have had this conversation before, and you can see a little slice of it on some of the threads from pervious years.

I'll just say a few things to start off the conversation, if anyone wants to go there...

The 1st year of ContactCamp, the issue was resolved neatly at our first meeting in two statements. First, we have a responcibility to the form to show to new people that thereis a practice that is not fundamentally about sexuality or intimacy. We also know that our responcibility here is notjust when we are teaching but when we are showing the practice at the Center Camp Jam. That was and is the guiding mission of Contact Camp, to represent the form and help people into the form through the classes and morning center camp jam. The Second statement was that if there was any place where we should be able to give ourselves the permission to break out of the confines of our assumptions and social rules, then Burning Man is the place. It seemed that we were actually able to all agree on both and that there was both freedom to experiment and a very good representation of contact as a physical practice.

The invitation at camp is for people who are wanting to dive into the practice of contact and put something into sharing that practice with others. As such, it seems obvious that the Fundamentals Contact classes are not a place for sexual exploration and where it should be commuicated that that is not what the frame of the practice is centered around. Similarly, the Center Camp Jam is something of a public sharing project and what we do there is representing the form, so as members of contact camp, we understand that people are looking at what is going on trying to figure out "what contact is". Perhaps a slightly softer holding of that responcibility, but still there.

We always keep a pile of clothes at our dance floor so that people who show up naked have something to put on. In classes, I request that they do so, not judgementally, but just in terms of setting the space for my class. If they would prefer not to, that's possibly (but not categorically) fine, but i also offer that noone is obligated to partner with them in my class. I find that naked or semi-naked people are consistently personally relieved to be asked to be clothed in the context. Of course it also helps everyone feel comfortable.

There are a few thoughts and a bit of frame for the conversation. If anyone would like to add thoughts or ask questions, feel free.

June work party in Grass Valley

ah... scheduling the down and dirty of getting things done.

We need to go through our stuff and do a bit of inventory and repairs, out in Grass Valley, about 2.5 hours east by north east from San Francisco.

Work, Help, Roles, Jobs...

Hi, so another part of that meeting on Saturday was talking about work for contact camp and leading up to contact camp. here is a list of things. Some are special jobs on playa and some are for before we head out... if you feel like something sounds like a job you would like to take on, send a little post...

List of Jobs...
1) Camp manager...that's ME. I don't know what else to call it...I would love someone else to take this on next year.
2) Coordinatrix ... deal with mass communication, handle e-mail and registration, feild questions, etc. MUNIR is starting to take this on
3) Infrastructure ... dealing with repair work and new construction projects. some of this will be pre-playa, some on playa. There are several tasks which could be divided out or one person could coordinate them all and direct others. check out the infrastructure thread. We don't have someone on this at the moment. 'would love some help there.
4)Workshift manager ... this is on-playa. managing the signing up for workshifts and being the gentle reminder for people to get their tasks done. LAURA MAGUIRE is taking that one on.
5)Food Order(pre-playa), Meal Planning(pre-playa), Kitchen Organizer (on-playa)... these are several interrelated but seperate tasks. People who take them on will need to communicate. ARI has expressed willingness to Food Order again. I imagine a couple of others to help would be great. of course, everyone can posts requests on the FOOD thread...
6)Site Person/Greeter (on-playa)... this is a role of basically being responcible around camp for the day, in the way that Sam and I were last year... combination of being the source person for knowing how things run, where tools are, greeting people as they arrive, dealing with the occasional weather-caused disaster, etc. I imagine havinga few people to trade off on this would be great. LUCINDA has agreed to take some of this role on... a few others out there?
7) Beautician ... well this is something that we can all takle on a bit, but if someone or ones have some expertise in this (stage design, interior/exterior decorating, etc), that would be great. I already have an idea for some stretch fabric sculptures i want to do, as well as a beautified shower arrangement... maybe this can be just a tseperate thread that we can brainstorm around. Carrie suggested that we bring more mirrors for costuming...
8) Web help ... JONATHAN BLOW is taking that on. probably will just be a bit of technical work for the moment, as the page is already written basically.
9)Documenting ... hey, i think that this is something that many of us can do, but i would love it if people took that on as a little assignment... photos, video, maybe an article...

Any other ideas?

for Workshifts on playa, of course we will all be helping with setup/breakdown/basic camp maintainance, but we also all do 3 or so hours of work shift each week. that might mean being on a dinner cook crew or a cleaning crew. It will basically be a similar system to last year, but with the cleaning shifts tripled, so we have a really nice camp to hang in...

Food 2007

Hi

so here is the new thread for food. Here is a good place to put out requests, volunteer planning help for dinners, etc.

Ari has volunteered to food order for us again (yeah!).

Nolita has volunteered to do meal planning for dinners (yeah!).

I suspect that it would be good to have two meal planners if someone else wants to split it with Nolita. meal planner's job would be to come up with dinner plans for the nights, write up some recipes, and get the dinner crew for the night started on making dinner. Spreading out this responsibility would likely be a good thing, so any other cooks with experience planning meals for large groups, feel free to post here thoughts, particularly if there is a meal or two that is a favorite of yours that you would like to head up.

Here, you may also make requests for snack, lunch, and breakfast foods.

And, of course Ari, if you have anything to share around what we can order easily and not, feel free to chime in, as well as when you need to hear all requests by.

So folks know, the basic food availability is a thorough supply of organic vegan, with lots of easy to prepare meals and snacks, both because of the inclination of those of us who have been most involved with the food and because vegan usually requires less refrigeration. We are open to talk about dairy and eggs, but know that capacity is limitted and probably restricted to the first days If you want meat, that is up to you (canned stuff and jerky is good.)

Feb 24 meeting

Hey Contact Camp folks, we just had a lovely meeting at Philz Coffee In San Francisco… Munir, Carrie, Jonathan Blow, Lucinda, Laura Maguire, Erika, Vadim, and myself. We talked through a bunch of stuff (except for Vadim, who’s English is not so quick, so he spent most of his time drawing lots of pretty pictures.)

I’m going to take all of those suggestions and information, crunch them through a spreadsheet and figure out some sort of base contribution that we will be asking from people. I’ll do a brief summary here of what we talked about and then do separate threads for a few basic topics.

First, we talked about numbers. Of course, there was the basic tension of wanting to make a space for everyone, yet also wanting a manageable size for camp, both in terms of organization and in terms of making connections. Here are a few things we came up with. A) have in mind a limit of around 60- 70 people for camp, which we can check in about and possibly stretch later based on how organization goes, if other people step up to organize the additional infrastructure, etc. B) ask that people have an investment in contact camp reflected in a combination of being able to put energy into camp, strength of interest in contact, and ability to be there for setup/breakdown. We also want to ask that people arrive by Monday at 6pm this year, so we have a real sense of people “being there” rather than have a continual flow of new people. C) encourage people who are in groups and who are particularly organized to do sister camps, in the same way that HumYum did last year (they are coming again by the way). D) perhaps host a Hushville-style zone for people who are self-sufficient who have links to contact camp but who for whatever reason aren’t in Contact Camp (not enough space/infrastructural capacity for more, mixed groups of contactor/non-contactor, or people who just want to do their own infrastructure but be near us, etc).

Second, Offerings… we talked about what we are going to do… basically went over the info that is already on the web site, so I won’t repeat it here, except to say that Carrie wants to do a West African class and Vadim and Erika are interested in sharing some of their performing work. That’s the exciting stuff, but again, its on the web site.

Third, new infrastructure projects… I’ll do a separate thread for that

hi all...

so a bunch of us talked at the Contact Lab/Exchange in Eureka, and it's feeling good. Some folks who expressed strong intentions to go from that meeting include Munir, Lucinda, Nolita, Tanya, Cammie, and Glenn. Given that it is still really early, that feels great!

Here is the scoop at this point.

1) Default organization pattern is the same as last year... i will take on being the spearhead person and will work witha crew of others in a central organization committee. We would LOVE it if it were feasable for it to be more of a collective of people working together and less of the organization held together by the mind of yours truly, however, this would probably have to come together in the next month, so we can get some balls rolling. If you want to be part of the organization crew and can committ some time to being in a small collective organizing it over the next months, either write here or send an e-mail to the coordinatrix at burningcontact@gmail.com (at the moment that is either Tanya or I).

2) Aiming for a smaller camp next year... 50 -60. If someone wants it to be bigger and wants to put in the organizational work to make that happen, let us know, but otherwise, that feels manageble on a number of levels, given other commitments i have this summer. It would also afford a more intimate experience of burning man, in comparison with the 110 person camp we had last year.

3) Aiming for a more concentrated camp of contact improvisors.... where it felt this year as if we had a camp that was a mix of contactors and the contact friendly, i think this year to aim for a camp more concentrated on the devoted contactors.

4) Given that we also want to help make a wonderful, space happen for a lot of our friends, I am thinking to put out more of an invitation for people to do sister camps in a village near us and to more actively collaborate with other interesting camps to make a village... particularly, i think of HumYum, Heebeegeebee, and Gamelan X, who were our neighbors last year.

So, this e-mail is going out first to folks who have been in contact
camp, to folks who have contacted us this year, and to folks who have
gone to the trouble of signing up on the burningcontact tribe. Feel

infrastructure ... new plans and repairs

New Infrastructure
This is a list that I am starting of new things that we will be building for this year to make camp nicer. Feel free to comment on them, give suggestions, offer help, or suggest new things. Suggestions for new things are especially appreciated with commitments to do take care of them or spearhead them yourself…;-)

1)Kitchen/pantry … want to use one of the domes for it, unless another structure materializes… basically make an enclosed space for cooking, storing food, etc. I think we have everything we need for this, except that we need some good sturdy big folding tables. I think they are just $35 each at Home depot, so I might just get 3 of them unless people can bring some. Could also use a bit more shelving

2) washing station for dishes. I want washing to be a pleasure that we look forward to, not an awkward task that makes us afraid. To that end, I want to se up a sink and a little water tower with a water pump to get water into the tower so that we can have some gravity fed pressure for a hose for washing, making the whole process more of a pleasant one.

3) Shower … I want our shower to be a little oasis… place where we can easily go to wash, sheltered from the winds and eyes of the world, perhaps with a little amber rope light and a similar water tower as the dish wash station. I imagine a long black hose for heating the water as it comes out of the tower, so we can regularly have hot showers.

4)Cool box … the duvees blowing around last year were confusing. I want to make a simple wooden frame and staple the duvees to the frame to make a cool box that will be insulated during the day and be able to be fully opened at night to cool everything down.

5) Signage… more, bigger white boards, both for displaying out class schedule and for internal messaging

6)Compost… I want to make a simple rack that we can hook mesh bags onto to dry. I want to have a bunch of mesh bags made of DURABLE mesh to stick the compost in for dehydrating (I’ll get this done at the same place I had the domes sewn in Hayward last year.

7)repair parachute… one has lots of rips from the truck… will have it repaired in Hayward.

8)Beautification … well this could take many forms… the two things that I would like are to get more rope lights and to make some free standing stretch fabric sculptures for the entrance-way to camp (bamboo poles guy-wired to the ground and stretch fabric tied to these and the ground.) Any other ideas?

We are thinking of having a weekend work gathering and party out in Nevada City (where all the stuff is stored) in early June, say June 2/3. more on that as i chat with Max who's land it is on...

Who is going to be the organizing crew for next year?
How is Contact Camp going to be structured?
Size... keep it where it was this year, make it smaller, make it larger? (I'm sure we would have demand for a larger camp).
Anything we should try or might try for improving camp

Events at Contact Camp 2007

Hi... why not start early with brainstorms? What do you want to see happen this year at Contact Camp? here is what we have come up with so far as filtered through my finite little brain

As last year...
Center Camp Contact Jam every day
2 primary class times per day with the same 3 spaces (big parachute tent and 2 domes)...1-3 and 3:30 - 5:30
1 class in each slot will be CI Fundamentals. up to 2 other classes in each time slot. (Butoh, capoeira, martial arts, yoga, etc...)
Special evening jams and performances

Some things i would like to see added
*an intermediate/advanced CI class every day at 3:30 in one of the spaces

*a BIG JAM on Friday morning... put out a call to make that jam a special big jam, where we try to get as many people as possible to swarm Center Camp and do contact... perhaps with mild facilitation through the bullhorns. Can you envision 3000 people all doing contact at the same time in the same place? I think it can happen, especially if we post it as such in the WHATWHEREWHEN

* a lecture/dem/performance of CI on Thursday night, where we introduce people to contact, its history, what it is, why do it, etc.

Anything else y'all want to do or any way that you would want to fit into those proposals.

Cheers to cold beer mondays

Hey y'all, i just gotta say that one of my fondest memories of being in contact camp is the monday morning/afternoon cleanup crew. We had it all, the hot sun, the cold beers, the mad crazy scrounged up lunch, jonathan with the master rebar remover project, felix holding down the truck packing, cello geting the wine cold, people exchanging contact impromation, and perfect timing (i heard people who left earlier in the day waited for up to 7 hours, it took us 2.5). Lots of love to all you in contact camp and if you weren't there on monday, we were all holding a happy space for you. And also, who took the group photos?

Arriving on August 26/27...

hello all,

So as most of you know at this point, this year they popped a suprise on us about early arrival. namely that you need to have your name on a list at the gate in order to be allowed in before Sunday at midnight. Also, quite unfortuneately, they required that registered theme camp organizers (i) get them that list back in early July. That means that a number of people who wanted to come for the weekend did not make it onto that list. Below you will find the list that they accepted for Contact Camp. Also, below you will find the supplimental list that i tried to send them and the rejection letter that was automatically e-mailed back.

This is an issue both for the people not on the list and in some cases for carpools containing people not on the list.

If you or a member of your carpool wants to arrive on the weekend for set-up and are not on the official list, then i see two main options...
1)just go and negotiate at the door. (If this is the case, come prepared for a rejection, which might mean going and hanging out in the mountains or at some hot springs for a day or two and coming in on Sunday at midnight). I realy don't know how the words they put out will translate into reality at the gate. They have never done this before, and the process is already botched.
2)plan to arrive after midnight on Sunday.

Beyond that, if you have other creative solutions, feel free to explore.

PS Why are they doing this? I don't know exactly, but i suspect it has something to do with new BLM regulations and their use permit for the land.

SF rideshare

hi all

so i have talked with a lot of folks about going from SF... it seems we have more people needing to go than obvious vehicles planning on going. If you have a vehicle and could offer rides, please let me know and/or post on tribe. Also, if there are a cluster of people who still need rides, perhaps you can rent a car together. a lone person, i would suggest to look on burningman.com and craigslist.

Please let me know what you are doing, particularly if you mentioned something to me before. I don't necessarilly remember everything that people tell me in conversations

Here is what i know so far

my van and the truck are leaving on Friday morning for the playa. that is space for 8 or 9 people.

of those spaces, there are me, Sam Burnier, Isabelle, Elske, Felix, Dasniya, Cammie. Ari? maybe room for one or two more. let me know if you would like that space if it is a space (need to see how many seats are in the truck).

I think that Matt and Laura want to leave on the weekend for the playa and may have a car that can take just the two of them. they may not also have that car and may need rides.

Jonathan Bloch said he might have a car... and might not ... and wanted to get there weekend sometime to help out.

Pipaluk is leaving for the playa on Sunday and can others in her van. contact her.

You can send stuff in the truck if you need to in order to maximize the ability of other cars to transport people.

I can't guarantee getting anyone out there, but i can try to help coordinate. write to me if you have a ride to offer or if you need a ride and also feel free to contact appropriate people directly if you need one.

What YOU need to bring to Burning Man...what WE still need infrastructurally...

First, what WE still need, then what YOU need to bring personally... if i missed anything, please comment. If you have any of the group things, please also post here.

What WE still need

The following is a list of things we still need… could you post here what you have that you could bring for the camp. Some, we don’t have. Some we have, but need more of

-propane tanks (filled)
-power (solar panels, wind turbine, another generator)
-propane/kerosene space heaters w/fuel
-propane stoves w/fuel
-foldable tables
-portable shelving
-5 gallon buckets
-cutting boards & knives
-coffee maker
-solar showers (we have several for the showers, but could use some for pre-heating water for cooking)
-big tents (pantry, guest room, massage room, etc)
-carpets
-old vinyl billboards
-an air conditioning unit (for the truck, so we have a place to retreat in the afternoon)
-big tarps
-rebar + spikes (for nailing things down)
-pillows for sitting on
-First aid materials/kit

If you are coming from San Francisco Bay Area, you can drop it (and anything else you like) to be brought out to the playa in the truck Friday

Part 2 -- What YOU need to bring

The following is a list of personal things you need to bring with you to the playa…
-WATER – we are each bringing some water out there to the playa, we should each bring about 1.5 gallons per day… half for group use and half for personal use
-sun protection. Personal use is shower and drinking, group is food and water for tea and such.
-cold weather clothes (layers are good. It's nice to have a big coat that you can wear while walking across the playa and take off for getting sweaty while dancing)
-hot weather clothes
-foot protection … the playa is an alkali flat. That means you will need CLOSED-TOED shoes! Sandals will likely make your feet very unhappy, as the alkali dust makes all of your calluses dry out and crack. Sneakers are good or boots. Also good to bring foot lotion/moisturizer to put on your feet every day.
-sleeping bag, pad, shelter
-eye protection - goggles, sun glasses, big hat (goggles should be totally airtight…)
-lip protection
-towel
-water bottle
-bicycle
-eating utensils (spoon, cup, plate/bowl)
-moisturizer
-toiletries
-toilet paper (Burning Man supplies toilets, but not paper)
-day bag
-scarf (for face)
-safety & flash lights (so you can see your way at night and be seen by the 20 ft cupcake driving across the playa)
-1 ft to 2 ft pieces of rebar for staking down your tent and such(bring twice as much as you need… you will probably need that much and if you don't people are always not bringing enough, so someone will be happy)
-rags and duck tape for making your rebar stakes safe at night when people bump into them.
-garbage bag for your garbage (don't plan on anyone taking your personal garbage out for you)

A few nice things extra include
-costumes
-shade structure
-ear plugs
-shade for vehicle
-gifts to give

August 25 ... departure and help packing...

Hi all

so, we are getting a 22 foot truck and loading it up for the road tommorrow.

we need help packing it.

we will need some last minute errands done.

we need to vacuum some carpets before we pack them.

schedule will be an improvisation. We have asked people (probably you) to show up at 9:00 AM to help pack. I will be running off withs ome people at that point to go pick up the floor in SF while opthers handle some things around there... vacuuming and last -minute shopping.

we also have to pick up the big food orders.

Come at 9AM... if you can't, give a call later and you will likely still be able to help. we may be done and ready to go by noon... we may take much longer. help is needed, but again, schedule will be improvised.

PS if it helps contact campers get out to the playa, get your stuff over to FOrt Awesome tommorrow morning, and it can get in the truck. If you know non-contact campers who need stuff moved, we will likely have extra space in the truck. the truck is about $1.50 per cubic foot to get to the playa and back, and we are asking folks who are not with camp to match that if they want us to move their stuff, which we would be delighted to do.

Food At Contact Camp

Hello, all. I'm Ari, your Lord of Inventory. I did this last year, and I'm looking forward to making it bigger, better, and easier this time round.

Here's the basic info:
-We'll have common food of all vegetarian kinds for people to make their own breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks - anything that's not terribly perishable or expensive or heavy or packed in glass, we can get. I'll do everything I can to make it organic & high-quality.
-We'll also have shared dinners nine days, Saturday through Sunday, which will entail 7-10 person-hours of cooking each night (that's around three people cooking for three hours) , plus 5-7 person-hours of after-dinner cleaning. Dinners will be served well before sunset, ideally around 6:30 or 7:00 p.m, so cooks will have to begin around 4, and cleaners will be working from about 8-10.
-We'll also have brunch on the last Sunday, and maybe a couple other meals, open for discussion.
-All of this means that every member of Contact Camp will have to sign up for at least one cooking or cleaning shift, so I will post a) a list of all campers and b) a big signup sheet.
-Everyone is asked to contribute a couple gallons of water for collective kitchen use.

Now some questions for everyone:
1.) What foods would you like to have in stock in the kitchen?
2.) What would you like to have for dinner?
3.) What meals, other than dinners and Sunday brunch, should we collectivize?

Send me a Tribe message in reply, or if you have any questions or concerns. In a couple weeks I'll be drafting complete menus with vague recipes, and I'll start compiling a wholesale order, so the sooner you let me know what you want, the better.

Kecak every day at 2pm

hey all.

so, we are in a fabulous neighborhood! the Gamelan X folks are one of our neighbors (wow, they are a really amazing group of people!)

We will likeley be having many of them come by our camp. Also, every day at 2pm, they will be leading a kecak over at Heebeegeebees, another one of our neighbors.

the kecak is an amazing group rhythmic chanting structure from Bali... it will blow your mind! It is also callem the Ramayana Monkey Chant.

circlesong / vocal improv

i'd like to get together some vocal improv jams, of various sorts (including circlesong model of layering parts ...), which could happen spontaneously, to accompany dance jams (or not). not sure whether i should attempt to set an actual time in advance or just make it happen when we're all there. i guess setting a time in advance and having it on the schedule (though not the paper schedule - too late for that) would alert others outside our camp. i'm up for committing to "being there" and making it happen at least 3 or 4 times - could be daily if others wanted to commit to facilitating a day or two. any thoughts?

"Axolotl" and "Rituals of the Inner Circle" at Contact Camp

We are going to do Axolotl again at Contact Camp this year, but decided that we wanted to come with a more rehearsed version of it. It is a piece I have been directing in which the audience is blindfolded for 2 hours and invited to interact and explore with each other and a group of actors, dancers, and musicians... it has been ana amazing project!

If you are interested in being involved in the project and are available to come to the Bay Area August 14-20 for rehearsals, let me know. We will be rehearsing for 5 days then doing a couple of performances in the bay area before takingit to burning man.

Also, Felix Ruckert is going to be coming from Berlin for Contact Camp... he is a german director who used to work with Pina Bausch and who has been directing interactive performance work for many years. He is going to be doing an interactive piece in Berlin in the fall called United Kingdom, explore issues (amongst others) of status, hierarchy, domination, submission. He will be working with us during August 14-20 with some of this material to do a piece called "Rituals of the Inner Circle", which we will do an informal showing of in San Francisco and at Burning Man.

Ride to BM offered for up to 3 people from the East

Hey everyone,

I am leaving from the southern Vermont / western Massachusetts area to drive to BM in my VW campervan tomorrow. My planned route to BM will take me through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Utah to Nevada.

It is possible that I could alter my route in order to pass through New York City, New Jersey, and Maryland, if there were someone there that needed a ride and would significantly help with the additional fuel cost to make that route alteration.

I would be happy to pick one to three people up along the way from NY to BurningMan, as long as each person is honest, carrying nothing illegal, willing to split the fuel costs, and can drive a standard transmission vehicle well.

I will probably not be able to offer a ride back after BM because I will be continuing west to the coast.

If you know anyone who meets my criteria and needs a ride, then have them call me on my cell phone at 518-817-3496.

logo and propaganda for Contact Camp

I just finished designing the logo for Contact Camp. To see it, click on photo on this page, I post it under it. I would like to get some feedback from you.

I will print some stickers soon with the logo/location/informations on them, so we can stick them all over the playa and glue them onto our swimming suits, bikes and frying pans.

I am also doing stencils of this image on several pieces of fabric that we can attach on poles around the playa... lovely propaganda.

what do you want to do?

I was thinking to start this stream of dialogue around what people want to do there. this is a "do it yourself" event, so it will be composed of your ideas. I of course also recognize that only some of us have the time, energy, and computer-sittin' stamina to actually write this stuff down, and also, our conversations before burning man are best seen as a spring board, as opposed to a full set of commitments to hold.

Preamble ramble... what we did last year...
1)hosted the daily morning jam at Center Camp
2)hosted 3 daily classes at Contact Camp
3)labs and classes in yoga, partner yoga, inversions/handstands, capoeira angola, martial arts (ala Seattle's Quantum Martial Arts school), authentic movement, contemplative movement, parkour/free running
4)live music and dj'd jams at night
5)that special jam on Wednesday night...
6) a few spontaneously organized performances& happenings around Black Rock
7)small group contact moshes at various evening parties around the playa as well as outings of small groups to go and play
8)Axolotl: (did a lab version of a piece i direct, where the audience is blindfolded for 2 hours and invited to interact and explore with each other and a group of actors, dancers and musicians)

I would love all of this again, and more. I expect that we will have at least double the participants (we will cap it at 120 and see from there if we can handle more infrastructurally.) Infrastructually, expect that we will have 3 dance spaces at camp - 2 thirty foot diameter domes (from last year) and one 45 to 60 foot diameter dome (this year's construction project).

Here are some of my thoughts and fantasies and speculations
1)with more people in camp, it seems feasable to host a nightly contact jam without needing to have a large fraction of the camp committed... that is, with all of us free to make a random choice about when we want to go, there should be something happening there every night, where last year, there had to be a bit more commitment and coordination.
2)a BIG JAM: some morning, call for a BIG JAM... "everyone" come and do contact at Center Camp. If we make it Saturday, then everyone who has been seeing it all week , dropping by classes, attending jams, etc, knows to converge at this one time... can we get 1000 people to come and do contact together, making it the largest jam that has ever happened on the planet?
3) Focus jams: last year, i had the idea of labs, but what seems to make more sense is something more like a focus lab, where experienced dancers are invited to explore a specific focus... subtly different in that it is less about teaching each other things, stop and start working through things and more a jam around a theme for more fluid exploration that can manifest different ways around a theme. A few years ago I orginated such a focus jam around "intimacy" at the West Coast Festival that went amazingly well. we talked for an half hour about our thoughts, feelings, observations about intimacy in relation to contact, then we jammed for 1.5 hours without any rules, just a memory of what we said and heard from each other. then we talked afterwards about what we saw and felt... if you are more curios about it and the frame we set up beforehand, would be happy to talk about it.
4)a butoh workshop with culminating performance ritual -- i don't want to lead it, but i think it is a fab idea (who wants to be involved... me, Stazia, Fkir... others?)
5) Axolotl: I want to do it again this year, but do a rehearsal process before burning man so we can go deeper, as well as do it a few times. let me know if you are interested...

ok... spark for conversation to evolve over the next month or three...

How to Avoid being Arrested Video

In any given public police encounter, with a few notable exceptions, the below rules will help protect your civil rights and improve your chances of leaving safely—so you don't have to be a legal expert to say and do the right thing.

1) Keep Your Private Items Out of View
This is common sense: Always keep any private items that you don't want others to see out of sight. Legally speaking, police do not need a search warrant in order to confiscate any illegal items that are in plain view.

2) Be Courteous & Non-Confrontational
If you are stopped by a police officer, remain calm. Don't ever -- under any circumstances -- talk back or raise your voice to a police officer. You have nothing to gain -- and everything to lose -- by escalating the hostility level of the encounter.

Even if the officers are being belligerent it's always in your best interest to remain calm, courteous and non-confrontational.

3) Determine the Reason You Have Been Stopped
Police may initiate a conversation with any citizen for any reason, however they may not detain you without "reasonable suspicion" that you are engaged in criminal activity. Ask the officer: "Why am I being stopped?" If the officer does not indicate that you are suspected of a specific crime, then this is a casual stop and you should be allowed to terminate the encounter at any time.

If the officer indicates that you are suspected of criminal activity, you are being detained. At this stage, the officer is attempting to find evidence on which to establish probable cause necessary to arrest you. Steps #4, #5, and #6 become extremely important at this point.

4) Just Say "No" to Warrantless Searches
Warning: If a police officer asks your permission to search, you are under no obligation to consent. The only reason he's asking you is because he doesn't have enough evidence to search without your consent. If you consent to a search request you give up one of the most important constitutional rights you have—your Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.

A majority of avoidable police searches occur because citizens naively waive their Fourth Amendment rights by consenting to warrantless searches. As a general rule, if a person consents to a warrantless search, the search automatically becomes reasonable and therefore legal. Consequently, whatever an officer finds during such a search can be used to convict the person.

Don't expect a police officer to tell you about your right not to consent. Police officers are not required by law to inform you of your rights before asking you to consent to a search. In addition, police officers are trained to use their authority to get people to consent to a search, and most people are predisposed to comply with any request a police officer makes. For example, the average motorist stopped by a police officer who asks them, "Would you mind if I search your vehicle, please?" will probably consent to the officer's search without realizing that they have every right to deny the officer's request.

If, for any reason you don't want the officer digging through your belongings, you should refuse to consent by saying something like, "Officer, I know you want to do your job, but I do not consent to any searches of my private property." If the officer still proceeds to search you and finds illegal contraband, your attorney can argue that the contraband was discovered through an illegal search and hence should be thrown out of court.

You should never hesitate to assert your constitutional rights. Just say "no!"

5) Determine if You Can Leave
You have the right to terminate an encounter with a police officer unless you are being detained under police custody or have been arrested. The general rule is that you don't have to answer any questions that the police ask you. This rule comes from the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protects you against self-incrimination. If you cannot tell if you are allowed to leave, say to the officer, "I have to be on my way. Am I free to go?"

If the officer says "Yes," tell him to have a nice day, and leave immediately. If the officer's answer is ambiguous, or if he asks you another unrelated question, persist by asking "am I being detained, or can I go now?" If the officer says "No," you are being detained, and you may be placed under arrest. If this is the case, reassert your rights as outlined above, and follow Rules #6 and #7.

6) Do Not Answer Questions without Your Attorney Present
There is no reason to worry that your failure to answer the officer's questions will later be used against you. The truth is just the opposite: Anything you say can, and probably will, be used against you.

In just about any case imaginable, a person is best off not answering any questions about his involvement in anything illegal. Assert your Fifth and Sixth Amendment rights by saying these exact words: "Officer, I have nothing to say until I speak with a lawyer."

*Remember- If you do choose to answer any of the officer's questions, always be honest. Police are not easily tricked and will often become hostile if they feel disrespected. If you feel it is best not to answer truthfully, then don't say anything at all.

7) Do Not Physically Resist
If the police proceed to detain, search, or arrest you despite your wishes—do not physically resist. You may state clearly but non-confrontationally: "Officer, I am not resisting arrest and I do not consent to any searches." Or you may assert your rights by simply saying nothing until you can speak with an attorney."
