Our kid at his 10th burn, and coming into his own. Seeing him all decked out for the burn (he looked wonderful) and grooving at Smash Camp, payback for 10 years of mothering a kid through Flipside-- and worth every second. Its hard to describe the experience... not quite normal maternal joy.....more amazement at being part of raising the next generation of freaks. marie

For me, it's a hard call!! The fun just kept on rollin'!! If I hafta pick, I'd narrow it down to:

      1) My greeter shift on Thursday- it was hard work and I got utterly drenched (woot!!) as point guy, but those of you who arrived and got into it really made the event for me- a very small percentage of folks were crabby and rude (yeah, can you believe that shit?) but most folks blessed me with great smiles, burny warmth and returned hugs aplenty!!! Yay- you guys RULE!!!!

      2) Dancing at Smash Sunday night after the burn- not sure when it was exactly, maybe 2ish- but I was passing Smash Camp, I hadn't danced yet AT ALL, and the music hit me like a tsunami. I danced my way across the grassy playa til dawn, doing this whirling dervish thing in my kilt. I had no idea I had moves!!! Yay!!!

      3) Meeting all the people I met!! I know, it's not ONE moment, but I was, as always, delighted by the amazing, beautiful, excellent people I met, many of them virgins, who AGAIN redeem and renew my faith in our species, my belief in a loving higher power, and my hope for the future of us all. YAY!!!!

      With Love, Light and Gratitude,
      Major Tom

Watching the soulflight temple burn to the ground after we spent months on the design, construction and concept. and watching the firefighters step back because the fire was much hotter than they expected. And then looking off in the distance to see floating lights heading upwards in the sky.

    Dancing at Ish

it was meant to be for you. Tell me, what did you do this weekend? i'm sure something magical happened to you. Floodside is a bit harsh, but entertaining nonetheless. I guess that seems like a reasonable interpretation for someone that wasn't actually there.

My most memorable moment that i forgot to mention in my verbosity was the dude that fell asleep on Cyndi's plush red chair. He got a solid 8 hours between early morning friday through friday afternoon. I'm so glad RedCamp can help so many people in so many ways.

well, hmm. what did I do....I hung out with friends I don't get to see much, thank you chris and jrod, drank, hit the hot tub, had fun, then laid around on sunday and watched Eddie Izzard, the comedian, never heard of him but LOVE him now. Then came home Sunday night and relaxed. Shopped around Monday, had steaks with friends Monday night after a ton of laundry, hung curtains that I got back from my old house, then work started again Tuesday. Was nice. But magical? Well maybe part of Saturday night LOL but not anything to take with me....I did miss everyone a lot but other things are going on in my life and needed to keep it simple this weekend. Will be at Decompression, if it is meant to be then too. Thanks for asking!

Sunday morning, after a long, long, long night that actually lasted for more like 5 days, I was on the second floor of the effigy reading what you brilliant people wrote. I went from crying to ecstatic and back again a million times. The second I was done and discovered that life is nothing but a series of extremes, a roller coaster of insanity, and finally (sort of) figuring it out, I looked down and found a golden OM and placed it where it needed to go.

Mostly an overwhelming sense of accomplishment when the effigy was 'finished' after busting ass for so long. I've never worked harder on anything ever in my life. Which may say some things about me. Also the 'Thank you Twitch' on the hand rail; thank you DemonMonk and esp. thank all you other DaFTies for the amazing experience.

Finding puke on the first floor and huddling under a blanket improving the atmosphere and trying to stay alive from the wind and rain prior to my epiphany.

Oh yeah, and watching it burn.

    Bets burn ever? Methinks yes.

My most memorable pre-flipside moment was seeing you twitch yourself off the first floor and land on the ground on both feet - I felt such a mixture of fright and mirth... there's only one Twitch in this world, and I'm grateful to have worked with you dude =)

Thank God we didn't have to bust it down and ship it back out, eh? :-D

      hmm,

well it was my first time camping with C.O.L.D. being in it is much easier and exciting than I expected. I have been through rigorous training though.
was it the amazing effigy, when I pooped in my heart panties in front of everyone, my first pasties?
I think it was when the "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" dance party was winding down with us throwing stuff at the people on the bus, Ty and Gregor falling off the bus again and again, slipping and sliding with the Whiskey & Whores crowd.
The best moment is when my boy, WnB, stopped being in a depressed place and came out to play!

The worst things were when I woke up to discover I hadn't been woken up to play flaming soccer and that a friend had given away my sweetbreath that he found.

    1. Just as the effigy was beginning to really burn, this really hot chick comes out of the crowd and asks to swap a menthol cig for a regular one. At first, I had no idea what she was saying due to all the confusion. Once I passed out a normal cig to her, we had a discombobulated kiss somewhere on the face because an explosion occurred. I turned around to find the hammer had fallen. I turned to check back with her and all I saw was her back disappear into the crowd...

    2. I heard a bunch of friend's voices coming out of Litt Valhalla so I stepped in and sat down. Although I couldn't see anyone's faces, I knew their voices but couldn't place them for the longest period of time. (Remember, most of us couldn't see straight that night.) Julieann's distinct voice kept resonating through the camp but I just couldn't find her in the room. Everyone in the camp seemed to just ignore her every time she said something. I was so confused! They finally told me she was talking over the loud speaker and that she was over at Whiskey Lounge. I wasn't until I found her with the microphone that I got my bearings straight.

    3. Being the first one to tell Serena that her Boyfriend got hauled out of our camp by the Rangers because he couldn't make it 25 feet to the porta potti.

    4. Getting to sleep with Smash's speakers only 50 feet away from my tent. Then, waking up on Monday morning when the music stopped and couldn't get back to sleep.

    5. Making it all the way through Labyrinthia this year.

    6. Getting to eat the BEST Shrimp and Jalapenos wrapped in Bacon, marinaded in an Australian sauce, and cooked on the barbe.

    7. And a couple of others that I can't publicly speak about.

    1. New friends and adopting two virgins into our camp this year: Rachel Love and Koala, great to me you.
    2. Fireflies flying to the moon and rains of golden sparkles, fireflies diving down to cool in a mist over the crowd.

    3. The End with all that came with it. New friends, new family, deepened love and respect for the people I know and I met. People who help you back up again. Hugs and love to those who were there with me at the end - even if I was not able to remember everyone one of you, I was very blessed to have known you.

    4. Oh yea, I didn't get a chance to have bacon this year. = (

i had the best best best bacon at nft. no surprise with roadrash in the camp.

i got a compliment on my dancing! Hughmungus, you were awesome yourself, and in front of the fire it was purfect!

i got to PET on burn night with Feral Frank's GF, even though he couldn't make it from nyc.

      sloan was sweet to me.

      rob was sweet to me.

i got some very sweet sex toys from my campmate, Jordan! and tons of pictures of people taking the money shot out of the sex toys at lick and suck. aka the money shot.

i got a shot out of the dead doll's vagina. also known as the mung shot.

      In no particular order....

      1. Not having responsibilities or a theme camp...but still camping with my awesome theme camp family for the 5th year in a row.

      3. Seeing so many old and new faces and being the most social ive ever been at Flipside.

      4. Almost getting hit by an effigy bottle rocket.

      5. that refreshing energizing feeling you get after swimming and a shower for the first time out there.

      6. Spontaneous moments of passionate combustion.

      7. Spending time with friends i know and love from coast to coast.
  • Thrashing the Wild Divine

    Wed, May 30, 2007 - 3:42 PM
In the last several months, the dance that has come out of me has been this full-blast primal tribal pulsing pounding dance and I'd yet to meet a woman who could match it or not be intimidated by it. Here--an hour or so after my first burn--I danced with a red-caped gypsy woman in silver coin short shorts and black fishnets and she not only matched me but challenged me. For the rest of the night, every time I turned around there she was again and we'd dance the next iteration of this moment, maybe six quarter-hour exhaustions that culminated up on the stage under the dome thrashing the wild divine.

    Spectacular spectacular.

It was not about me, it was not about her, it was about a dance that demanded discovery, and there's a metaphor in there for life more mundane.

But what I wouldn't give for one more dance...

    The temple burn.

I'm not a spiritual person, but I can appreciate the symbolism of leaving a message on the temple of something you want to send away--as a friend put it, "Sort of like a prayer for people who don’t pray." In my case, several friends had cancelled on Flipside because of family illnesses, so I wrote "for all the friends who couldn't be here, all the things that are keeping them away."

I had a Flipside-friend there, Dave of Spin Camp, who had brought a huge case of these airborne Chinese lanterns that he had first encountered at the Chiangmai lantern festival in Thailand. He had previously lit some of these on tethers, but for the temple burn, he let a dozen or so fly off. They drifted northward into the sky, fading away into stars. Giza, which had been the most obnoxiously loud theme camp, redeemed itself by playing some music that was not only appropriate but moving. Everybody present was quiet. I got a little misty.

Thank you so much for using the Temple as we had intended. We brought the temple out there for each individual. Our belief was that the effigy is for the community and the temple is for the individual. On Sunday morning I walked out to the temple and read what people had written. It was a very memorable and touching moment and it justified the project.

Those lanterns rocked. I remember looking across the field and seeing those floating lights. it was nothing short of magical.

*Running into Jenn KickASS Stone every time I was just starting to wonder what to do next.

*Meeting the WonderLoungers....Atomic told me they were good people...they were beautiful inside and out!

*Finally hearing a definition of "swinger" that made sense to me.

*Getting lost in those blue blue eyes of a total stranger. Dear lord. Thank you for the teahousetime!

*Being fed chocolate cake for breakfast by a beautiful man wearing a red tutu.

    *Slinging ice with the clowns.

*Winning a prize at Smack That Ass Camp.

Impossible for me to pick just one. It's like hundreds of colors splashed together. I was affected by so many things: those who welcomed me and helped assemble my flimsy tent just before the heavy storm on Thursday, the warm smiles, hugs, winks, and nods from strangers, finding familiar happy faces, the conversations (some casual, some intense, some totally surreal), dancing with beautiful freaks, fire in the sky, watching hysterical drunks slingshot plastic bunnies out of a tin can from the Celebrity Bar ramp, waking up to megaphone porn-readings, losing my rings and then getting them back (thanks again, Banana Jana), feeling genuinely joyous despite drenched clothing and bedding and a lack of sleep, and having one of my new-found friends nudge me after an incredible blur of events saying "hey, ya know it's still just Saturday morning... 2 full days left!"

I feel fortunate for this experience and am awed by the many rich souls who put so much thought, time, and heart into this magical event - from the bad-ass artists, djs, hoopers, and fire-spinners to the impressively creative theme camps and all you fine folks who gifted everything from breakfast tacos, fruit kabobs, hot coffee, everclear-soaked cherries, absinthe (ahem!)... Too many class acts to count.

        - There was a harvester ant colony in the middle of our camp, Bean Bang Boom. We ended up giving them their own sign and eventually their own popsicle effigy. After the effigy burn, Ant Camp had their own burn which turned out to be a silly fun time.
        - Sliding through the mud on my k nees screaming while the Chupas in our camp were cranking out noise.
        - Feeling the most social I've ever been in my life and for the first time truly feeling as if I was part of the community.
        - Our whole camp coming together on the worst night of weather to keep our structure from flying away.
        - Sloan asking if I could approve the COLD bus as an art car if it was driven into the effigy as it burnt.
        - Running into people that I wasn't expecting to be there.
        - Seeing the best people on earth do their thing for four or five days.
  • Rangers Vs Shaven Apes

    Thu, May 31, 2007 - 2:53 PM
    Almost forgot!

Being cheered by on of the camps for using the porta-potty in front of their camp and proving that Rangers can get out of a "locked" porta-potty quicker and more efficiently then the Apes. They taped the door shut. Never thought I would ever get cheered to take a piss.

Might sound a bit strange but... Driving away was my most memorable moment.

Every Burn I've attended has been tainted with the thoughts of leaving. Leaving the event grounds, the people, the sights, sounds, smells, feelings... every bit of magic embedded there. This sorrow has always plagued my final day of the event making that drive out agonizing. This Burn I felt none of that. I drove out around dusk on Monday with nothing but goodness in my soul knowing that yes, it was the end of Flipside 2007, but that just meant I could start looking forward to the next event.

    Fire flows in my veins.
Embers are the stars above me.
    I Burn.

So many! The Effigy totally hypnotized me, that ramp was just so beautiful. Walking up it Saturday night, I got "stuck" up top while some Mutaytor folks were taking pics (met Buck & Roo, just lovely.) On the way down, I saw my boyfriend at the bottom of the ramp. He had just arrived at Flipside. I met him at Flipside '04, fell in love with him that night, & so Flipside is our anniversery and folks, all was right with the universe. My friend Juliana, whom I met first thru Tribe, than when I met her in person in SF in January, moved back to TX from SF to be with her sick mom. She also came to Flipside, & we got to spend great quality time . My best friends came to their first Flipside. I got lots of great moments with random & deliberate strangers, lots of random moments with great friends, and so many positive manifestations of wonderful intent that my head is still spinning trying to process them. Sunday night before the Burn Dave, Shay & I were waiting at the top of a trail by Wonderlounge, and Shannon told me she wanted to meet Terry, whom she had seen on Tribe. Not 30 seconds later, he came strolling up & I grabbed him & made the introduction. Talk about positively manifesting! That was such a sublime moment, literally ask & you shall receive. Spin Camp with the fire bricks totally rocked, those were gorgeous! After the Burn Sunday, I was wandering around & pulled out my emergency metallic blanket (fyi, the best blanket! Waterproof, very visible, easily packable) spread it out on the ground, and just layed back watching the people, the lights, the floating lanterns, etc etc etc go by for a while, and Kevin, the naked double staff spinner, came & sat down when I invited him. I just laughed when he said he didn't want to get an "ass stripe" on my blanket, I was pretty sure any possibility of that was singed away during the processional....:) So, I come to find out that Kevin was indeed the man responsible for the "Fire Kickball" game that rocked my world at Decompression last year and he just had the best energy & aura. I most definitely got the Drift, that beautiful man camped near & was such a wonderful addition to the energy. It seemed like there were loads of people from out of state, that was sweet! I thought there was less of the smaller art stuff, but more of the bigger, cooperative installations. Giza was incredible, the Observation tower was bigger & better, and the showers rocked! (Thank you Dan!) And while I was somewhat melancholy it ended, I know Decompression is right around the corner. And then Orfunner.
Take care my precious people, of yourselves and each other. I will see you down the road....

    * In my first 5 minutes at my first ever regional, I'd shoveled cow patties, kicked someone off the bus for Overlord who I'd just met, and stolen Sloan's booze as he showed us where to put the tent and crap, which maybe explains why I got so drunk so fast <grin>

    * Got my ass flogged until I was giddy

    * Ran around with a bunch of people on a golf cart playing with our flame thrower and singing the onnnne line most of us could remember to "We're not gonna take it" over and over at the top of our lungs

    * Made out with at least one hot chick

    * Just about became an honorary C.O.L.D. Librarian

    * Ran around with DZL's flamethrower some more all over the place, eventually running through 2 propane tanks, until the sun came up

*GodDAMN was there ever a creepy fuckin' GIANT bug on the tent, under the rain fly...

    * After having been up for roughly 3 days in trying to GET there then of course not sleeping Friday night (our first, and see above: all the first night), I was completely and thoroughly certain that it could NOT just be the morning after we got there, it HAD to be like 4 days later, though I knew the burn hadn't happened yet (drugs? what drugs?)

(Well, I thought the Turkey carcass IV was pretty memorable, too, but if we're going to get into just the details of C.O.L.D. camp, that'd be a whole 'nother post... <grin>)

There are probably a lot more memorable moments, but I don't remember 'em... ;-)

The one moment that will forever be crystallized in my memory is hanging the "flower" in SMASH. It was still under construction the evening of ASS, and I was wiring madly on it outside the dome... I had been told that they would hold the show for 1/2 hour if I thought I could hang it by then... So we went for it. I was atop an extension ladder, at the top of the dome, the air must have been 110 degrees due to the body heat of the better than hundred people sitting on the floor awaiting the beginning of the show... And sweating profusely knowing that all eyes were on me, both to get the thing up, and to get on with the show.

Keep in mind, I had just finished wiring this thing outside...it was untested when it went up. So, as we dropped the ladders and untied the lines from it, my prayers went up to the cosmos that there wouldn't be a faulty wire somewhere in there...and the resultant sparks and thrown breakers.

I wipe my brow, grab the plug, and....

....it comes alive, UV light beaming out brilliantly.

      Then, it begins to turn.

The cheer goes up...and the show begins.

I loved it all...and will hold that moment with me forever. The show went flawlessly. The dome looked simply badass.

      What a night.
