I'm a Virginia Burner headed to Flipside and Austin for the first time. I am coming to town on Sunday to spend a few days getting to know your city. I've got a rental car, now I'm looking for recommendations for inexpensive places to stay around town, and what not to miss while I'm there. I'm an artist so gallery and museum suggestions are welcome too. Thanks, Silver Raven

Re: recommendations on enexpensive places to stay in Austin?
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 4:29 PMThere's several hostels right downtown. I stayed in a lot of hostels in my twenties and have almost always met some very cool travelers from around the world. Plus it's nice and cheap.
As for the museums, the biggest one I know of is the Blanton, but I can't recommend it - just not much there that fits my taste. The smaller galleries around the downtown area and along South Congress are a lot more fun.
See you at Flipside!

Re: recommendations on enexpensive places to stay in Austin?
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 8:27 PMI always stay at the hostel in town if I can. (Hostel International) It is by the water and not far from the bat bridge to downtown and S. Lamar. I always go to Waterloo Records when I'm in town. You need to see a movie at one of the Alamo Drafthouse theatres...they are awesome!!! This is all I know from heading down for a few years on my own for SXSW, so I'm sure some locals know of more out-of-the-way stuff to do.
Have fun! -

Fri, May 16, 2008 - 8:42 AMI think the Austin Motel on South Congress is neato and it's only about $85 a night.
