11 Months

So it's 11 months until Burning Man. I need to come up with a workout program that will help me lose about 30 lbs of fat, and gain a good amount of lean mass. Any suggestions?

    Hey Moist Pup,

If you're willing to go slowly - I'll share what I did. I started last February and lost about 25 pounds. My progress has been slow, but I stopped using all diet aids and carb blockers and metabolism boosters almost a year ago and I read that they mess up your body and metabolism so much that it can take 18 months to get back on track.

I started eating small meals throughout the day. Not really meals - they're more like healthy snacks that range from 100-300 calories. I never went more than 3 1/2 hours without something. The meals would be fruit, lean protein, slim fast shake, yogurt, salad, GoLean or All Bran eaten dry like snacking on nuts, and salsa with cucumber chips.

I stopped drinking (mostly) Monday - Thursday unless I was on holiday or a special occasion. I allowed myself one binge meal per week.

Exercise and gym workouts are kind of erratic with me - but I started hooping in May and I found that it's hard to drink or nibble while you're hooping =) I did try to incorporate a little of the Abs Workout and Diet - but I chose things to make it easy.

I still have 13 more pounds to go to reach my goal. I've kind of plateaued, but I haven't really gone up. This year at Burningman, many of my campmates said positive things to me which helps with the incentive! Hopefully this new tribe will give me a new kickstart =)

Thanks Jeannie, that's awesome! I'm going to start my new diet and workout program on sunday Oct 1st.

I did Body For Life for a while, and that's always been a great program. But it's hard to keep the diet going. It's a low fat (30g or less a day) diet, small portions, six times a day, diet. Seventh day is a free day to eat whatever. It's incorporated with a specific weight program. I'm thinking about modifying the program and trying it again. I've had a lot of friends who've had successful toning/weight loss on the program.

I've also considered going vegeterian. My family has a history of lactose intollerance so I don't want to tempt fate with a vegan diet that could cause me to lose my lactose digestion abilities.

There's also the raw food diet.

Something I've thought about giving a try for the past year is a 12 day fast. Not for weight loss purposes, but because I'm curious about the detox/cleanse aspects I've heard about.

i personally think that giving yourself a "binge meal" usually leads to more excessive eating...you get into the habit of writing off all the little excesses as permissable (and some are), but it always becomes "well, ill make up for it tomorrow...or the next day...etc" i think its better to just try to find a diet(and by diet i dont mean "diet" just the kind of food you eat) that is healthy, that you enjoy all the time, and dont have to binge to satisfy yourself. \

i would HIGHLY suggest your consideration of going vegetarian. I'm a vegetarian, and it definitely works wonders. just taking the meat out of your diet cuts out around 70 or more % of the fat in your diet (usually...unless you eat excessive amounts of cream or cheese...and its not just in the meat, but food that tends to be associated with it that is also high in fat.) . you end up eating a lot more vegetables, which is always good. and if you really crave meat, go to a good asian place that uses seitan, its the best substitute ive found. because more than likely, more than craving meat, you are craving protein. I do suggest drinking soy milk if you become a vegetarian (and it doesnt have to be exclusively) but just for protein reasons...gotta get that protein! while im not telling you to go vegan (i could never do it) do try to cut back on the milk, butter and cheese...other 'thick' things like that...that tend to add fat and calories where you might not suspect them.

yes, eating every 2-3 hours is a good way to keep your metabolism going, just make sure its the right things. fruit isnt always the best snack. there is a lot of sugar in it. oh yeah...stay away from sugar! of course, dont swear off pastries or chocolate or anything like that, you have to satisfy yourself, too. but try to cut back on it as much as you can. i have a friend who changed nothing in his diet but that he stopped drinking soda, and he lost about 20-30 lbs.

while the raw food diet is healthy, you dont want to jump into it. same goes for being a vegetarian. whatever you do, take steps towards it. if you simply cut something out of your diet that was once regularly there, you will only fall back into it eventually. baby steps:)

what ami forgetting... no late night food. i can't tell you to "stop eating after 8" or anything like that, i know i sure as hell dont, but try not to go to sleep until you know your body has had sufficient time to digest its last meal. a couple hours or so. you dont want to fall asleep with anything just chillin in the tummy, or it will be wasted calories.

lets see...ill give you an example of a typical day meal plan for me.

for breakfast, around 7am, i have a small bowl of cereal with soy milk and come coffee. around 9:30, i have an organic granola bar(2.5g fat, 110 calories). At lunch, around noon, i usually have one of those "simply asian" meals. theyre pre-cooked, but come in a little tupperware. you just heat and eat:) theyre perfect proportions, theyre vegan, and taste really good, unlike most instant-type stuff. around 3 i have a snack of soy nuts and dried fruit or some snack vegetables like baby carrots. i make myself dinner at 6. it always has some sort of carbs, and some vegetables. my favorites are thai red curry stir fry over jasmine rice, portobello mushroom risotto, and fried tofu biryani. i could give you recipes if you want:) at night, ill often indulge in a small serving of soy ice cream (the vanilla soy dream tastes just like vanilla frosting...mmm...). and thats pretty typical for me.

i wouldnt suggest trying a 12 day fast until youve tried shorter fasts. 12 days is a long time, an dyou may find yourself binging by the middle of it.

i hope some of that helped:)

ps: i still love and enjoy cheese and pizza and chocolate mousse and cheesecake and all that wonderful stuff...but i dont let myself have it in something like a "1-day a week i can eat whatever i want" because that is schocking to your body and digestive system, and doesnt help...just treat yourself once in a while, whenevr your body is telling you that you need it:)

The interesting thing about the Body For Life program was that on the "free" days I would go out and get nachos and pizza at 12:01am on the free day (the cravings were intense.) And then I would feel really really awful. The food was so heavy, and my body had gotten so used to whole grains, and low fat foods after only a week that I couldn't comfortably eat it anymore. In a way it actually behaviorally conditioned me to not want those heavy foods during the week.

Lily, have you read anyting about soy toxicity? There are some molecules in soy that have to be removed for soy to not be toxic and many of the American soy food preperations aren't doing what needs to be done.

The SF Chronicle had a good story on it a few weeks back:

Here are some more links regarding soy toxicity:

yeah, people find ways to make everything an issue in one way or another. i buy all my food organic, and thats the closest i can get to making sure everything that goes into my body, belongs there. i could find articles about how everything we eat gives us cancer or poisons us or whatever...but ive been eating this way for a long time, and im fine so far, and i have a million friends that are vegetarians and vegans that love soy products, too...you have to just accept that every choice you make will have people for and against it. and im cool with that

Don't get me wrong, I (HEART) soy! I'm just concerned about how eating too much might cause new problems.

DON'T CHECK THE SCALE MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK.

seriously just don't, you'll only end up getting mad at yourself for checking the scale all the damn time (seeing the daily ups and downs doesn't help). Plus if you are going to add some muscle, that adds weight even if it replaces the fat (as you probably know)

Right now I'm just maintaining the weight but much of it is because I don't want to worry people with going smaller, even though I'm doing it the healthy way (1-2lbs a week, no starving, and exercise). But I just cut calories, cut out things like soda and only had healthy yummy snacks in the house to keep eating every 2-3 hours.

I would suggest with setting the goal a little sooner like 15-30 weeks from now only because you might tell yourself, oh I have time I can eat this or that or skip out the workout today. Keep the focus by aiming for losing the weight by spring.

Hmm, that's a good idea. Setting intermediate goals. I'm going to post a thread called "Moist's progress" and well set my long term and intermediate goals, and then through out the next 11 months repost in that thread on my progress.

i lost 20 pounds in 3 months with this simple formula:

        1) exercise every other day
        2) eat whatever the fuck i want-just less of it.
