11 Months until the man burns!
Starting weight: 228 home scale ( 230 gym scale)
Goal for 11 months: 32 inch waist, and under 200 lbs.
Short term program goal: 34 inch waist (measured at belly button)
Workout Program: 6 days per week (3 days weight, 3 days cardio)
Diet: Low fat (Under 30g/day), six servings/day, 7th day is a free "anything goes" day.
Length of program: 12 weeks Ends Dec 23rd!
I started the gym program yesterday Oct 1st, and I'm starting the diet portion today. Yesterdays upper body workout went pretty well. I'm only a little sore this morning (because I was doing a weight program until just before burning man, so I've only been slacking for a month and the muscles wree still there.)

Re: MoistPup's progress
Wed, October 4, 2006 - 11:28 AMOkay, so changes to my routine.
I'm going to only partially do the low fat diet because I've started playing rugby with a local team that parctices 3x a week. The practices are aprox 3 hours long, and are heavy physical activity so I'll need to increase my caloric intake a bit to allow muscle to still grow.
The weights 3x/week will continue.
I measure my waist (at the belly button) it's 42" as of Oct 3rd -

Mon, October 9, 2006 - 9:43 AMThe Rugby is killin' me! My legs are super stiff right now and I'm not looking forward to practice on Tuesday. I went to Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturdays practices. I only did weights once last week, I need to work out M-W-F with the weight program. -

Tue, October 10, 2006 - 4:33 AMI think I might try to find a yoga class before tusdays practice. Unfortunately I have insomnia tonight (monday night/tues morn) and haven't slept which isn't going to help with the whole healing thing.

Wed, October 25, 2006 - 9:28 AMOkay... I've been interviewing for jobs all last week so that meant no Rugby. Did I replace it with a gym cardio workout? No of course not. (sigh)
I started the Shangri La diet today. Looking forward to see if it works or not. Heal, even if it's just a placebo, sounds good to me. -

Re: MoistPup's progress
Sat, February 17, 2007 - 9:41 PMSo I go my crazy on and spent the $125/mo to join Equinox.
Oh my god what a difference it makes! 24 Hour Fitness makes working out such a process of hurdel jumping, and Equinox streamlines everthing with a gym where you pay what it really costs to run a proper gym with the optimum ratio of members to equipment. The pool uses that non-cholorine system meaning your skin doesn't dry out, and there are no time limits for being in the pool. The members are friendly, and the staff generally knows the name of their members.
I'm pretty fucking happy. And I'm getting fit because I enjoy going to the gym again. -

Re: MoistPup's progress
Thu, March 1, 2007 - 4:15 PMOMG Iris, let me tell you. Two weeks in now I'm totally rocking out on my swimming in the morning.
I'm up to 6000yds and increasing at 500yds per day. I'm swimming 6 days per week, with Sunday as my rest day. I feel great and my body is already seeing incredible differences.
In the evenings I'm doing weights with a friend, or yoga if he's not available. The yoga has been really challenging because of the morning swims and a general lack of upper body strength after doing endurance swimming.... but I'm definitely feeling it the next day anyway.
If you're serious about getting in shape I think the $125/mo is not too much to pay (as long as you can afford it.) It's a luxury in some ways, but a total boon to your health if you can convince yourself your health is worth it. -

Fri, June 22, 2007 - 3:24 PMOkay, I decided I need outside assitance with weight loss. I've enrolled in Weight Watchers and I'm down 7lbs in 3 weeks. I hope to be at my intermediate goal of 210 by the time the burn happens. -

Re: MoistPup's progress
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 9:50 PMI've had lots of friends who have had success with weight watchers - it's a decent balanced way to lose weight - and it also teaches better eating skills for post diet. -

Re: MoistPup's progress
Mon, July 16, 2007 - 11:32 PMwell, i intend to get back to the gym now that my cancer scare is over. the mass in my chest that was just assumed by everyone to be a tumor turns out to be just an abscess and, since it's been treated, no longer hurts like a sonovabitch anymore. so i think i can get back to exercising without screaming in agony.

Fri, December 14, 2007 - 3:20 PMsix months later and I've ... well ... yeah. The usual. I've dropped a few here, gained a few there, joined a gym, quit a gym, joined another gym, will be quitting that one, and will soon be back on a "realistic" diet / exercise plan.
We shall see. -

Mon, June 23, 2008 - 10:51 AMA year later, going strong.
So a year later and my weight loss has stayed, and I've really put on a lot of muscle. The combination of Weight Watchers and paying a trainer for training 3x per week has really paid off for me. -

Re: MoistPup's progress
Thu, November 20, 2008 - 1:59 PMI suppose the most important thing is that you realize real sustainable weight loss is going to take a year or two to reach your goals. No 12 week diet is going to work in the long term.
Weight Watchers is the program I used to lose my weight that actually resulted in a long term change to my eating habits. The program is easy to follow because you can't eat whatever you want, you just have to adjust the serving size. Over the course of a couple of months you relearn what an apropriate portion is, and it becomes natural. Even if you stop the official diet, as long as you try to keep eating smaller portions you're going to lose weight.
I've been working 3 days a week with a trainer for over a year now. That's cost me -a lot- of money. I do it though to keep me going because I fear I wouldn't if I didn't have cash to lose on the line. At the very least I recommend that you pay for 12 sessions with a trainer. At most gyms that'll set you back about $500. You'll want to choose a trainer that can see you at the same time every week so that you get in the habit of setting that time aside officially to work out. 12 Sessions is probably a month (or more if you miss a session or two which is normal) of workouts. The trainer well get you started at the right amount of weight, and also help you build the smaller muscles that are needed for doing strength training later.
The other piece of advice I have is to pay to go to the nicest gym you can find in your city. If that costs you more than $80/mo it should include towel service and have VERY CLEAN restrooms and locker rooms. The more you pay the more you're going to be surrounded by other people who are 1) serious and 2) office professionals. Leaving behind my cheap 24 hour fitness gym was the best thing I ever did. I never realized how much negative feedback I was giving my going to that shit hole with it's urine soaked restrooms, obnoxious sales staff, crap customer service, and dealing with "macho" attitudes on the workout floor. You want to look forward to going to the gym, not dreading it. Spend those extra dollars, give yourself the incentive.
