Wed, October 21, 2009 - 9:59 AMUltrapure burns the longest for me. It's not quite as bright as white gas, but it has a lowerer burning temperature which allows you to do contact tricks.
As far as colored fuels...you need to use alcohol (methanol works the best, but is the most toxic) since you need a polar fluid to dissolve the ions which give the flame its color. Ethanol will work, but it takes longer (days or weeks) to dissolve the ions. However, be very careful using these solutions since virtually all of them give off toxic gas (i.e. boric acid) as a biproduct. I would only use them in an outdoor setting. Also, they cause your wicks to break down rapidly. Burn time for these fuels is a bit longer than white gas, but not quite as long as ultrapure in my experience.
Hope this helps...and I am not sure what you mean by "hoop sized wicks". Do you mean wicks of the same size that you would use on a fire hoop? Because, like any other fire prop, they come in all shapes and sizes... -

Mon, October 26, 2009 - 7:08 AMWay, Thats Exactly what i was wondering. Thanks Jonah, and yeah by hoop sized wicks i meant small fire eating sized wicks or nothing bigger than fire hoop wicks... not like that monster four winged dart you found :]
im building an aluminum ultimate frisbee style disk with fire prongs, and just looking to learn a bit about burn times way before i start playing with it, and trust me ill get good before i ever use it, and never light it without super saftey's....
Be Excellent .... Json -

Re: tech poi blog
Wed, October 28, 2009 - 12:00 PMBoy, you must have a penchant for danger! I'm not sure if you could handle a fire frisbee safely...you would have to catch it from the bottom or something. Also, I would worry about loosing control and having it take an undesired trajectory. Maybe an empty beach or parking lot would be a safe setting...I would not want to have any bystanders or flammable objects (like buildings, trees, bushes, trash bins, etc.) within a 100-yard radius, or at least double the maximum distance you expect the frisbee to travel. And, I would definately use ultrapure or some sort of lamp oil. This way, short contact with the wicks would not burn you so badly. Whatever you do, do NOT use colored flame with such a device. That shit is dangerous enough when you have more or less absolute control over what you are spinning. The last thing you would want is to have the disc fly close to your face and inhale toxic fumes. A case of chemical pneumonia will make you wish you had second degree burns all over your hands...
That being said, I think this tread is sufficiently off topic:) If you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer them, just send me a private message.
