Dose anyone know a good source for information on Army Educational benifets?
I would like to know how (or if) I could use the GI bill to Study abrod. As well as how I could get more money to do this?
Also dose any one know about the army colage fund?

Re: Benifets????
Fri, December 8, 2006 - 8:18 AMmake it Financial aid office at the school.... or find a local Veterans affairs office.... best bet is the financial aid office at the school..... you will need a copy of your DD 214...
be sure you register your DD 214 with your county recorder at your local courthouse.. or wherever your is located.... usually a courthouse annex.....
most counties will allow you copies for free of your DD214 once you register it.... and you know it's safe once it's registered.....

Re: Benifets????
Sat, December 9, 2006 - 12:33 AMDD214 is your discharge paper, shows that you actually served. Not sure you need it, though, since you need to contact the VA about educational benefits, rather than the school. You will probably need a paper from them saying you're eligible to show the school or schools you're interested in attending.

Re: Benifets????
Sat, December 9, 2006 - 7:35 AMThat DD214 is your best friend when it comes to benefits. Sure, it can be replaced, but that's a real hassle. Many larger schools have a VA office on campus, if so, you can start with them and they can point you in the right direction. Otherwise you have to locate and contact the regional VA in your area.
I was overseas when I got out, and wasn't able to apply for vet benefits at all. When we moved to San Diego, they were slow and overwhelmed. It wasn't until we hit Utah that I found a VA center which would process my paperwork in a prompt manner. Just letting you know some VA centers are better organized than others, and some have huge workloads and are slow just because of volume. Keep at it! Good Luck! -

Re: Benifets????
Sat, December 9, 2006 - 10:58 AMAnti M is dead on.... some (many) VA centres are just not that helpful, I know ours isn't.... registering your DD214 with the courthouse keeps that valuable piece of paper where you can always find it should you need a copy.....
You can contact the school, and with your copy of your DD214 they can facilitate your school bennies without you having to deal with VA..... But... depends on your school.. so, either way.... School or VA office.. have your DD 214 handy.....

Re: Benifets????
Tue, December 12, 2006 - 10:31 AMSorry, Bare, but I have to disagree with you on registering your DD214. All documents registered become part of public record. And what's on your DD214? Your Social Security Number. (This just in from a Navy Captain who was encouraged to register his many years ago and now wishes he hadn't.)

Re: Benifets????
Tue, December 12, 2006 - 11:27 AMSista, it's most likely an old school thought..... we were advised YEARS ago to register it... but you're right.. now days.. things are different... and Identity theft is far more prevalent... and nothing in life is 100% but do see your point....
I wish there was a way to remove ours from public record.. but once recorded you're right they are viewable by anyone that has your info..... and we all know getting that info is really easy now days.....

Re: Benifets????
Wed, December 13, 2006 - 12:20 AMI called our county recorder today... to ask about the DD214 document... I was told that they take precaution as to who can view that document... ID is asked for every time someone requests to view that particular document...
and I do recall the few times we have needed copies that we were in fact asked for ID.... so it made me feel a little better about having it registered....
I also asked if every county had the same requirements... and followed that procedure.. I was told they didn't know that for a fact but they though it was common procedure...
in any case.. I suppose with the way thngs are in our country now... we should take every available caution to protect our personal information....
so.... perhaps a secure safe deposit box.... but even that I am not so sure about..... guess we go back to the days when we stuffed things in family bibles our under the mattress....

Re: Benifets????
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 8:39 PMwhat is the qualifying factor that determines if benefits are avilable? or what are the eligibility requirements for instance in reference to VA medical benefits. I mean some of us served only in the weekend warrior crap side of the military, does that qualify us for VA benefits? -

Re: Benifets????
Mon, December 11, 2006 - 10:58 PMif you were inactive reserves then No it wont count... if you were active reserves and served 4 years (used to be, not sure if it is anymore) then it might... ya have to ask the VA office.... try this site for more info www.vba.va.gov/
this is from that site..
All Veterans are Potentially Eligible
Eligibility for most veterans’ health care benefits is based solely on active military service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard (or Merchant Marines during WW II), and discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.
Reservists and National Guard members who were called to active duty by a Federal Executive Order may qualify for VA health care benefits.
Returning service members, including Reservists and National Guard members who served on active duty in a theater of combat operations have special eligibility for hospital care, medical services, and nursing home care for two years following discharge from active duty.
Health Care eligibility is not just for those who served in combat. Other groups may be eligible for some health benefits.
good luck....
