Yes! For the first time since 2005, I'm able to make it back to the Playa. Who else is going?

We could organize at least a pot luck dinner or something, perhaps a meet n' greet, or coffee hour in Center Camp.

Anyone interested in helping me promote this Tribe during Burning Man? I'm going to make a t-shirt, flag, banner, something to help get people's attention.

Art Installation 2008

I had an epiphany for an art installation and without discussing it with anyone, I sent an application to BMorg for it to be allowed at the Burn this year. The beauty part is that I don't really need any help with it. I can create, install, and maintain it myself... if I have to. It would be nice to get some assistance and not have to worry about it for a couple days.

It's a POW/MIA table. To signify that it is my art installation, I will be flying a POW/MIA flag at my camp. Aside from that, credit won't be shown until after the event. I want people who are not familiar with the table to see it, understand it, and experience it.

Anyone interested in this project? The only thing that I need help with is turning on/off the lights at sunset/sunrise. Initially, I planned on solar-powered LED lamps on the ground, but to prevent the lights from 'walking away', I think I will instead use battery-powered 'push' lights.

It looks like the 'care package' project might work in conjunction with Burners Without Borders. I've contacted their project manager through Storm and they're interested in combining efforts. More info to follow when I get it.

So don't use any of that Army lingo on me or I'll have to bust some Bosun rope moves. ;)

Nice to meet Y'all! I am a Virgin to BM but.. yes, I have had desert survival training, read the Playa Guide, and am planning to come with a camp of 6 year BM Vets. So I have my basics met. I'm looking forward to gifting my camp with Goulash tho ;) Don't tell!

So I just met Shooter in person a couple of hours ago. He's not military, per se, but as an embedded journalist has already seen more combat than I am likely to see in my lifetime. He said he wasn't a member of this tribe because he's not military, but I was thinking he should get an invite anyway. All in favor, say "aye." Opposed?
Fundraising and More

After a couple responses that I've received, I'm probably going to rename 'Operation: Burnout'. Burnout has negative connotations, so we might change that part. If anyone has any suggestions, please send them in quick so that it can be given to JRS before the next newsletter.

I have two fundraising ideas that I would like to try. One was given to me by Gadget. He recommended that I create a mix CD and sell it with proceeds going to the project. This is quite easy to do, since I have almost everything that I need to do it. I can buy the first batch of blank CDs and labels out of pocket.

The second idea that I have is to create a Cafepress.com account with the Burning Military logo for people to buy. All of the proceeds going to the project, of course.

For both the CDs and apparel, I would like to provide a link to a website and mention that the money is for the project, whatever we decide to rename it to. If anyone would be interested and willing to create and run the website, please let me know.

I just came up with a concept that could be a great way to start the Tribe off right.

It's called 'Operation: Burnout'.

Basically, we will hold fundraisers to raise money for sending care packages to soldiers and sailors stationed overseas, especially Iraq and Afghanistan.

Anyone interested in helping out?

I'm bringing this Tribe back to life. I just returned to San Diego from Japan and I'm totally interested in making this Tribe flourish and grow. I want to organize meet-n-greets, projects, etc. I'm going to BRC this year and I want to do something with this Tribe for the Burn, especially since it's an international theme.

So, who is going to be attending Burning Man this year? Of those attending, who's interested in a get-together? We've previously discussed a pot-luck meet-and-greet dinner. Due to the financial strain of flying from Japan, I will be unable to attend Burning Man this year. Hopefully, I will be transferring back to the states within the next year and be able to attend Burning Man 2008.

But I can probably help organize something from a distance. Thoughts?

I took an oath to protect against all enemies foreign and domestic. What if the President has become a domestic enemy? I really want to fulfill my oath and be a good Sailor, but I'm thinking I may need to drop to the IRR so that I am not put in the position of disobeying an order. Not saying that I would, but I can't imagine that someone as conflicted as I would be a good cog in the wheel. I'm too darned questioning and idealistic. I believe in our CONSTITUTION, but I do not believe in our current government.

I'm really hoping this is a work of fiction: http://atlanta.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A12715&st

And yet, I fear it is not: http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey

I am a card carrying member of the ACLU because I believe so strongly in civil liberties. I'm wondering how we all got so complacent that we don't seem to care about the basis for our country anymore. This shit is getting too serious. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came...

Any advice on how to reconcile the conflict? My current plan is to get dual citizenship with England and go live somewhere in the EU, probably dropping to the IRR for the rest of my reserve contract. I'll advocate for civil liberties from afar. I suppose this could label me ripe for corruption by a foreign government, but I'm not picking another system over ours. I just want ours to work again. The principles of the Constitution are wonderful. I never expected to see them so undermined and twisted.

Semper Fi... to our ideals,

Another mental health resource.

Letter to an advice columnist:

Dear Annie: I'm writing because, as a Marine wife, I know the toll deployment and war can take on a family. When we were married 30 years ago, my husband and I were both in active duty. I soon separated from the Navy to raise our family of four children.

My husband was deployed in the first Gulf War. It wasn't until years later, about the time he was considering retirement, that he started to experience persistent health problems that needed more than routine medical care. The years since the war had exacted a price not only physically, but psychologically as well.

We slowly started to unravel as a family. Even while my husband began to get the treatment he needed, I knew I needed help as well. I made an appointment with a mental health counselor at our medical facility. I needed to learn that it wasn't being selfish to be able to put myself first in order to be a caregiver for others.

I've recently learned of a new service that allows military service members and their families to take a free mental health self-assessment. Available at www.MilitaryMentalHealth.org and by phone at 1-877-877-3647, it helps you think about your symptoms and connects you with military and veterans' treatment resources. I wish this program had been there when I needed it. I know I would have seen the need for getting help much sooner.

I hope other military spouses or family members reading this will learn from my story and take advantage of this free service. A self-assessment is a first step toward supporting one another and a huge leap to ensuring your own personal health. — A Marine's Wife in Virginia

What if....

What if we pulled our troops out of the cities in Iraq, and set up a half dozen fire bases spread out in the desert that can all cover one another. We tell the Iraqi government that we will be right over there for the next two years, and if they need us call us and tell us exactly what they want us to do. Then decide if we want to do it or not and then maybe do it. Sort of like your local police dept.

Then we would be dealing with the insergents on our terms.(by our terms I actually mean General Patton's terms. He liked to charge the cities while the troops were out in the field. Taking the cities easily and fighting the enemy in the open country side.) And we would have a clear exit stratagie that would put the pressure on the Iraqi people to solve their own problems.

Thoughts?
Where do you submit sh*t like this anyway? Write the governor? Your Senator? Create a new blog?

being discreet

heh. its really funny for me to read about all you straight folks having to be "discreet" about your home lives. a little kink wont get you vetted from the service... you will just be humiliated a bit when people snicker about you behind your back. when i was "outed" as being gay back in '79, my apt was burnt down (with me in it sleeping) my car was sabotaged (brake lines cut) i was beat up on numerous occasions, broken bones, cuts etc. i fought the bastards for over a year, dealing with humiliation and threats to my life every day, and ended up with a honorable discharge. oh, the guy who outed me was the battalion chaplain.

the cool thing about all this is that when i got sick, i registered with the VA and all my medical care is taken care of for free. i've been 100% disabled for 4 years now, and havnt spent one dollar on medical care. if i had recieved a BCD like they wanted to give me, i wouldnt have been able to do that.

OK So now that we have some vet's organized in the BM Perspective. I would like to know what people think about whats going on. I want nothing but honesty and respect on this post because to some of us this is a vary sensitive issue. I know I get a little frustrated when people take my experiences and life, halfhearted.
I have recently discovered that a lot of people have preconceived notions about who we are and what we did. I find that a lot of people do not even want to look at the human side of a fucked up situation, rather than dismiss the entire situation as something that is fucked up and they do not want to deal with on our level. I guess what I'm saying is that it is easer to protest a war than to live with face to face. I feel like for some people who we are is not so something they like to justify as human. Maby we anger them, maby they just fear us because we are the manifestations of there fears.
The thing that relay pisses me off is how this is turning into another Vietnam war. Everybody is against the war but nobody wants to hear why. I'm against the war. I have good reason to be, but nobody relay wants to hear me talk.
Are they afraid of me, or are they afraid of themselves?

hello everyone I must say i'm impressed with the tribe. This year was my first burn and daily I think about the short 5 days I was there and eagerly count the days till the Man rises and burns again. I'm a former Marine of nine years 92-01. joined this tribe after reading about a possible formal dinner on the playa next year from e-playa. Returning home again next year is my top priority and I will more than likely be there. With that said being attending a formal dinner on the playa would be something amazing exspecially in that enviorment so count me in. In addition as we go thru the plannning stage if there is anything I can do to assist in this count me in on that too.

I just have to post this somewhere
Snakes and the Military

Snake Model (ORSA model developed on contract)
The Differential Theory of US Armed Forces (Snake Model) upon
Encountering a snake in the Area of Operations (AO)

1. Infantry: Snake smells them, leaves area.

2. Airborne: Lands on and kills the snake.

3. Armor: Runs over snake, laughs, and looks for more snakes.

4. Aviation: Has Global Positioning Satellite coordinates to sake.
Can't Find snake. Returns to base for refuel, crew rest and manicure.

5. Ranger: Plays with snake, then eats it.

6. Field Artillery: Kills snake with massive Time On Target barrage with
Three Forward Artillery Brigades in support. Kills several hundred
civilians as unavoidable collateral damage. Mission is considered a
success and all participants (i.e., cooks, mechanics and clerks) are awarded
Silver Stars.

7. Special Forces: Makes contact with snake, ignores all State Department
directives and Theater Commander Rules of Engagement by building rapport
with snake and winning its heart and mind. Trains it to kill other snakes.
Files enormous travel settlement upon return.

8. Combat Engineer: Studies snake. Prepares in-depth doctrinal thesis in obscure
5 series Field Manual about how to defeat snake using counter mobility assets.
Complains that maneuver forces don't understand how to
properly conduct doctrinal counter-snake ops.

9. Navy SEAL: Expends all ammunition and calls for naval gunfire support
in failed attempt to kill snake. Snake bites SEAL and retreats to safety.
Hollywood makes fantasy film in which SEALS kill Muslim extremist snakes.

10. Navy: Fires off 50 cruise missiles from various types of ships,
kills snake and makes presentation to Senate Appropriations Committee on how
Naval forces are the most cost-effective means of anti-snake force projection.

11. Marine: Kills snake by accident while looking for souvenirs. Local
civilians demand removal of all US forces from Area of Operations.

12. Marine Recon: Follows snake, gets lost.

13. Combat Controllers: Guides snake elsewhere.

14. Para-Rescue Jumper: Wounds snake in initial encounter, then works
feverishly to save snake's life.

15. Supply: (NOTICE: Your anti-snake equipment is on backorder.)

16. Transport pilot: Receives call for anti-snake equipment, delivers
two weeks after due date.

17. F-15 pilot: Mis-identifies snake as enemy Mil-24 Hind helicopter and
engages with missiles. Crew chief paints snake kill on aircraft.

18. F-16 pilot: Finds snake, drops two CBU-87 cluster bombs, and misses
snake target, but get direct hit on Embassy 100 KM East of snake due to
weather (Too Hot also Too Cold, Was Clear but too overcast, Too dry with
Rain, Unlimited ceiling with low cloud cover etc.) Claims that purchasing
multi-million dollar, high-tech snake-killing device will enable it in the
future to kill all snakes and achieve a revolution in military affairs.

19. AH-64 Apache pilot: Unable to locate snake, snakes don't show well
on infra-red. Infrared only operable in desert AO's without power lines or
SAM's.

20. UH-60 Blackhawk pilot: Finds snake on fourth pass after snake
builds bonfire, pops smoke, lays out VS 17 to mark Landing Zone. Rotor wash
blows snake into fire.

21. B-52 pilot: Pulls ARCLIGHT mission on snake, kills snake and every
other living thing within two miles of target.

22. Missile crew: Lays in target coordinates to snake in 20 seconds, but
can't receive authorization from National Command Authority to use nuclear
weapons.

23. Intelligence officer: Snake? What snake? Only four of 35
indicators of snake activity are currently active. We assess the potential for snake
activity as LOW.

24. Judge Advocate General (JAG): Snake declines to bite, citing grounds
of professional courtesy.

25. Field psychiatrist: -- assume the snake is dead.... How do you feel
about that?

As the declared joint Chef It is my specific responsibility to be the Chef is to be this Tribe 's Bureaucrat. If anyone has any Bureaucrat-ing to do It must first go threw me first, than it will go to Pink Daddy and Sistea Weotch, for amending and debate, in weoch time it will come back to me for final approval. IF you have any complaints you can burn them.
Have a nice day. :-D

Origin of Veterans Day.

Just read this. Enjoy!

Hugs,
SistaWeotch

"I would like to clarify the origins of Veterans Day. Company B of the 137th Infantry of the Kansas National Guard was called into active duty on Jan. 6, 1941. One of those soldiers was Private First Class John (Bull) Cooper. PFC Cooper was killed in action on Dec. 20, 1944, in Germany. He received the Silver Star for his gallantry under fire.

Cooper's uncle was Emporia, Kan., shoe repairman Al King. King and his wife, Gertrude, helped raise John Cooper, and were devastated by the loss. King started looking for a way to honor his nephew. His idea was to change Armistice Day, a holiday set aside to honor the end of WWI, into an all-inclusive national holiday honoring all servicemen and women of all conflicts past, present and future.

King gained the support of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AmVets and American War Dads. He found another ally in U.S. Rep. Ed Rees, also from Emporia. Rees wrote the act effecting the change, and both houses of Congress passed it. President Eisenhower, another Kansan, signed the bill into law on June 1, 1954.

The first nationwide celebration of this new holiday was held on Nov. 11, 1954. Emporia, of course, held the very first "All Veterans Day" on Nov. 11, 1953.

Hey guys,
I just got back from my local VFW meeting and I found out that they are going to raise dues for the first time in a long time on Jan. 1st.
In fact the dues for a life time membership are going to double.

I highly recomend getting involved now if you have ever thought about it.
I am sure it will pay off for you down the road.

I wanted to know if any of you have any insight on Tennessee as a retirement opportunity. I'm working with a company that is developing Green and High Tech housing in the Southern part of the state and I wanted to know if it is a good option for retirees. Any inputs are most helpful!

Going to Thailand?

This is more for Active Duty Navy, since Thailand is still an active port call for WESTPACs. I found a posting from a guy seeking DJs and Fire Performers in Thailand, or people willing to travel to Thailand. It's a Burner constructed bungalow village in Lonely Beach Koh Chang, Thailand. He offers free lodging and food for performers on the performance days. Sounds like a sweet deal for anyone heading in that direction. I've already given him a heads-up, since I'm stationed in Japan.
