Okay, so presuming we can find a site for 1000+ folks, we're going to need a lot of skills, talents and abilities to make it happen. Fortunately Burners have those, but my main question is, who's got what?
At the moment I've just unofficially started trying to co-ordinate, but I don't have any intention of keeping the job if anyone out there has some experience putting together large events. I've been involved with this kind of thing before, is the only reason I think I've got any business even thinking...
We'll need a site (working on that).
We'll need medical folks.
We'll need fire safety, and probably fire trucks.
We'll need rangers/site security
We'll need a list of equipment that I'll try to compile a starter list of later today...
We'll need web and ticketing help (have already had one volunteer for this)
We'll need setup and cleanup crew.
We'll need great folks who "bring the Burn" artistically, musically, and personal performance wise...
We'll need other things I haven't thought of yet, but maybe you have...
We'll need "stuff", like firewood, fuel, portajohns, and so forth...
Who's got what?

Re: Skills and abilities
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 12:38 PMTransformus first year was about 200 people. (I'm not counting the 200 member rave camp that just happened to have their monthly party at Deerfields that weekend.)
Alchemy first year, about 300.
If you can get an event going, those numbers are more realistic than
1,000. In my humble opinion, you don't need to plan for that many. Theoretically, there are 1,000 invite requests rejected, Minus 150 to be sold next mont, and you have to take into account all the people who got 2 tickets when they only needed one, and will be selling the extra to a friend who didn't get any, and the people who got tickets and won't get to come because of work, finances, lover's spat, or whatever. I'm hearing about people who got their invite request rejected, already getting a ticket from friends. And maybe a few who say fuckit when their favorite theme camp(s) aren't coming, and sell their tickets. My fuzzy voodoo math says that when all the dust
settles and the smoke clears, there will be a few hundred who want to go to Tansformus and can't find a ticket. Just a huch, actually, I could be wrong. -

Re: Skills and abilities
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 4:22 PMYou're right. The numbers lie. If EVERY +1 was nonspecific (I know obviously lots of people got a +1 for someone specific) then every person can attend. I doubt thats the case though. Still, there will not be 900 people left without a ticket. We can take 150 out for the tickets already left, and maybe half of the 500 approved +1's might be nonspecific, for another 250, so instead of 900 it'll be 500. Then subtract from that any people who decide they're not gonna go, or that they cant make it. Maybe a couple hundred more. I think your figures of 200-300 are pretty accurate.
How are these people getting invites handed to them so fast? :( Nobody loves me. I always knew I should do my impersonation of someone with social skills more often. :) -

Re: Skills and abilities
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 4:43 PMIf you've got EMT skills, ranger skills, and fire playin' with skills, then I love you, for sure.
'Cause I love me some skilled folks.
I think y'all are probably totally right about the less folks (more like 200-300 would come), but, I'm hoping we can find a site that could do more, just in case.
Since there's no cash on hand, it'll have to be a deal where the site agrees that they're in for a percentage of ticket sales (okay in my DREAM WORLD we'll get the site JUST BECAUSE..but realistically...)...so I figure the lowball is to guarantee 100 and max at 1000.
Our biggest single expense is gonna be insurance, which is high for a smaller number but doesn't go up so much for a larger number. It's kind of steep for an event like this, and I can't really say I blame them!

The still count...
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 9:23 PM"I'm not counting the 200 member rave camp that just happened to have their monthly party at Deerfields that weekend."
Why not? Most of the major players involved in the Blue Moon camp have gone on to become enthusiastically resourceful members of the Mysterian community. Most are veterans and have found their niche, contributing in numerous different ways through the years. One way or another they certainly count. If nothing else just as attendees...
Harsh, dude... Harsh.

Re: The still count...
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 5:17 AMI think he meant it in terms of what kind of turnout we can expect, not that they didn't count. Not including the rave camp in the count suggests the amount of people that signed up for Transformus specifically. The first Transformus was small, so was the first Alchemy.
There are other factors that could drive this number up. If the time and location is right, we'll be picking up T'fus overflow. If it doesn't happen on the same weekend (which I think it shouldn't), then some will be attending both. Also, and obviously, burns are much more popular now than they ever were, so there may be more demand from that perspective. We should expect about 200, but try to accommodate up to 1000 (or more) if at all possible.
This is all academic if we don't get a venue. I'm asking around, and I encourage every one to do the same. With luck, we'll find a place on REALLY short notice. -

Re: The still count...
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 7:43 AMMe too, if I'm in I'm in.
Folks have mentioned EleMent, but nobody ever mentions the FIRST "Burn" on that site, 'cause we decided to have it like two weeks before we had it (we were post-our-first-Transformus and just all FIRED UP)....and we halfassed publicized it and didn't expect much, so all like *six* of us, I think, had a great time at that one!
Now every time we have a thing at that site we try to make it a point of getting all the veterans of that "first" burn back. So far so good...
So I figure, even if it's ten folks it'll be a blast, just, there are the realistic problems of what we can afford if there's only ten of us. Still, we can have it SOMEWHERE!

Re: The still count...
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 12:07 PMI'm not trying to diss your friends.
I'm just saying that Transformus brought in 200 people.
Blue Moon brought in 200 people. And they have an event that had built up over a long period of time independently of the Burn, and the people who came, came for Blue Moon and not for Transformus. If Blue Moon had been at another location that weekend
I don't think they would have skipped it to attend Transformus.
I'm just taking the number out because it is a statistical fluke.
Without this one group, Transformus would have had about two hundred people, which is what the organizers had predicted.

Re: Skills and abilities
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 6:04 PMI have fire play/safety skills, but I'm not a trained firefighter or anything. I can hold down a medical tent and help take care of really minor things, which I enjoy, but I'm no EMT either. I've never been a ranger, but I'm sure I can do that. I've never designed an effigy from the ground up, but I can definitely help build one (I easily spent the majority of my waking hours at T'fus '07 assembling Dixie).
I can help organize general fire play and fire safety. I'll be running Alchemy's conclave this year, and I have a pretty good idea about how to do it. I'd be willing to take that on if this things goes through.
Without sticking my foot in my mouth too deeply, I will invest a little $$ up front. I'll talk to you about this offline. I'm buying a house this year, and depending on how that goes (I'm looking now), I may have more or less to help out with.
Wow, we're nuts, wait, I knew that. We're burners. It would be awesome if we can help take some of the pressure of Transformus this year and give SE burners a place to go around the same time. If it's small and organic, that's cool with me. I loved the first Element, and I think that's probably what this will be like. -

Re: Skills and abilities
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 7:55 AMOoooo me too. In fact, if we should be so fortunate as to have any kind of success financially with this, in future, I would vote to dedicate the proceeds from whatever to a land fund. I really think that artists would rather have a place to go and work on stuff, that everyone would benefit more overall as a community and as individuals, from a place where things can go on, rather than from art grants. But that's another day's story...
I don't know if I should start another thread for this, but I guess the big first question as we're looking for a site is, what date?
Reasons for having it the same weekend as Transformus:
It gives everyone who didn't get into Transformus a sense of being included by this region. I think that if we hold it on another date, no matter what, some folks will feel let down. And, it kind of levels the playing field. If we hold it on another weekend, some folks will get to go to both, which will sort of enhance the star-bellied sneech factor if you see what I'm saying, and make some weenie roasts more important than others.
Reasons for not having it the same weekend as Transformus:
It would be great to be able to include folks who have tix to Transformus but would also like to come to this event.
Thoughts, y'all? This is something we should decide early, 'cause the first thing a land site owner is gonna want to know is WHEN....personally I don't have a strong opinion, as I said above I can see reasons for either decision.

When?
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 8:32 AMI definitely think it should be a weekend close to, but not on, Transformus. We're not trying to snub Tfus or exclude those who got tickets. To me, the idea is to have a time and place for that creativity that won't be able to make it. -

DITTO! I am willing to help however I can as the able bodied quick learning and willing to do what ever it takes kinda person that I am. I can help with everything except for computer stuffs. I have some kindof strange electrical force that zapps the computers I try to use :)
I have been working on the Pink Pussycat Lounge art car with Jimbo and knowing the beautiful light that is him, he will be all about bringing out the Pussycat Lounge and the Blue Beaver for the event!
I think that we should have some kind of meeting to structurally divide and concur. See who wants to head up which faction and do some serious brainstorming if this is going to happen.

Re: When?
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 11:37 AMOh, so cool. I'm starting to get all excited about the idea now...
We have a pretty cool space out here in SC, the site where EleMent was held, if folks want to get together for a planning weekend anytime soon. The only thing we've got really scheduled here for the immediate future is on the same weekend as PreHeat, which is a party that I'll send everyone here invites to, but y'know, party, maybe not so good to plan to do much thinking.
I would say that we could maybe use this place for the bigger event, but, it's got three downsides:
(1) too small to hold more than 150 MAX, and that's strainin' it
(2) neighbors too close to really rock it out sound-wise. They can't see us, but they sure can hear us, and I feel like a total A-hole asking folks to cut the music down when what I mean in my heart is CRANK THAT SHIT UP...
(3)The site's super nice with the woodsyness, but that makes it a bit or rather REALLY sketchy with the potential setting the whole feckin' place on fire aspect.
...so I don't think it's gonna work for that...sigh...

Tue, March 18, 2008 - 6:26 PMIf I can move a poi workshop scheduled for that weekend (I'm teaching it), then I'll definitely be there. If I can't, I may still be able to make it, but I'll have to leave early Sunday (if not late Saturday) to make my other commitments. It would be a good place to meet in person. Until then, we'll have to hack it out online or by phone.

Re: Skills and abilities
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 8:44 PMwell if VA is also starting a burn and they do theirs the same time as Transformus, then we can have a South East regionial weekend that is more likely to evolve and it also will keep each event smaller, which may not sound like a great idea, but i think it is and here is why.
events often become over sized to meet the fun factor, to many people, not enough space. if we start a tradition then as these events grow they can grow into more and more events and you pick your place or may-be tour events. one year transformus the next year sneechville.
i do think that every event will have their own core group that remains loyal to their particular event, but burning is definately spreading and i think that as a community we should think about our expansion and plan for it. Most espeically if events are going to cap ticket sales.
please ignore bad spelling i am not going to spell check this because i am lazy about that, and i need to go practice poi... -

Sun, March 23, 2008 - 6:55 AMSomething that I can do, I can draw a bit...
(I did my icon, see more at this website www.cultofgaia.com )
..and so I'm good for all posters/tickets/partyshwag whathaveyou, IF no one else wants it, sometimes other artists would like to do stuff like that, so I'll be glad to give it to someone else if they do, but I'm here to do it if not.
At the event, I'm good for gate, rangering, I've got good basic medical skills, I'm good for cleanup or any general festival needs.
Before and after the event, I'm good for setup, cleanup, and organizing the stuff that need to get there before and get gone after.
In planning the event, I'm good for promotion, I can do ticketcrittering, and so forth.
I'm thinking that this party will be my big Art Project for the summer! I love working in Spontaneous Organic media!! :)

I know basic first aid shit, but am not any sort of professional.
Same with fire. I'll stand by with a wet blanket and bucket of water.
I don't mind rangering. Brings back the old days of working the door at a metal club.
I have no web design skills, but could operate a myspace type user-friendly thing.
I'll set-up and clean up - not that there's much cleaning up, RIGHT? Because everyone is responsible like that.
I don't perform, but I play bartender. I like cooking, too.
I don't have any big ticket items, but I can keep scouring craigslist, freecycle, etc.
