Re: Locations
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 6:08 AMHmmmm MINDREADING LOL...
I can think of two. One hasn't hosted a Burn per se before but has hosted parties of large numbers of pagans, it's a great site in a whole lot of ways but has the disadvantage of not having water available that could reach the main field, so we would need to create fire trucks, I think at least two. We've got some ideas of how this could be done really inexpensively, but it would have to be done.
Another site that we like fine, but I personally think is a second choice, is the site that hosts Alchemy, which is owned by a great guy that my husband knows. The reason I think it would be second choice is that it's already slotted for Alchemy just shortly after Transformus, there has been interference from local authorities at that site before, and mmmmm it's just me but it's got itty bitty scorpions which personally gives me the hell no's. But, it's a big site and might be available.
Any others?

Re: Locations
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 9:29 AMIf we can find a place, we can make this thing happen. I don't have any suggestions other than what was already mentioned. I'll be looking for leads. -

Re: Locations
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 10:04 AMI'm going to write the folks at that first site later today, I'll post updates on that as I get them...thanks y'all for all the making lemonade out of lemons energy!
Lots of folks wanting to party is a GOOD thing!
Everyone please keep looking and thinking, all suggestions will be great!

Re: Locations
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 4:32 PMThere is another tribe of people in VA trying to get a burn together somehow.
tribes.tribe.net/varegionalburn
VA is trapped between burns. Transformus is 5 hours south of the middle of VA, and PDF is 5 hours north of the center of VA. Guess where I live? :) -

Re: Locations
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 10:22 AMMy employer has a farm up in Crab Apple, which is somewhere near Roswell. I think there is a chance she might want to gift it for this use. -

Re: Locations
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 11:26 AMThat would be feckin' awesome. How big? Someone with better geographic sense than myself is saying that that's about 4 hours away from Deerfields, which is reasonable if we plan to have it the weekend before, say, so that folks who wanted to come to what we're doing could leave and head that way.
We would want to try to make sure the site doesn't have to be a gift, though, something like a Burn is tough on a site!! But, maybe there's some specific work she would like done, if money isn't the biggest consideration...?
We've got an email out to one site, waiting to hear something back...

Re: Locations
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 6:21 PMLala, you rock! I owe you a huge hug.
Four hours from Deerfields is about right. I'm not far from Roswell (it's near Atlanta), and it takes 3.5 to 4 hours to get to Deerfields if I remember right.
I guess the next step is getting a pretty reliable confirmation on this. We'll need to know how many the site can reasonably accommodate, and we'll go from there.
Until next time, *e-hugs*

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 1:33 PMIf the location is finalized as Crabapple, GA, then it would be very convenient to the Alpharetta burners I know. I would be willing to participate any weekend in preparation.

Re: Locations
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 5:00 AMI may be able to get a piece of land in Tennessee. They have had parties there before, dirtbike tracks, woods, large field for camping. Possibly a waterfall depending on water levels during that time. -

Re: Locations
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 5:59 AMSweet! Let's all talk to anyone we have in mind, nobody get discouraged too quick 'cause it's gonna take a few weeks at least, but Tennessee would be good too, really I've been meaning to get out that way, and the land there is beautiful!
Y'all rock!

Re: Locations
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 1:17 AMHey guys...
So I've been talking to lots of people here in Asheville.....pretty much no one here got Transformus invites.....
So I'm pretty sure the Asheville crew will probably divise something to do on the same weekend.....I don't think that everyone will just want to sit around twiddling their thumbs that weekend wishing they were partying in our "backyard" to which access has been denied.
Of course it won't be a full on BURN but I do believe people without tix will want to party that party weekend....
I was talking to Medisin (JJ) and he mentioned the forest that they do the Full Moon Gatherings in.... -

Re: Locations
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 6:46 AMOh, that would be the SHIAT!! I have heard about that place and that it was a terrific site for a party!! Are they serious?!?
Yeah, I'm not worried about the label of "real Burn" versus the reality of "a party or event organized by Burners". To me, and having been around all this, it's the SAME, the only difference is that we can't engage in any promotion that would violate BM's copyrights of the term "Burn".
Ptttthhh, not worried about that! I'm much more concerned about stuff like keeping costs as low as possible, and making sure that great party folks get to hear about it! That can all be done! We've got plenty of time, if we can find a site!

Re: Locations
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 9:03 AMWell, I still think we should keep brainstorming to create a larger burn event somewhere on a different weekend than Transformus but for a smaller gathering / Tformus overflow, this place might work nicely....it's a beautiful clearing out in the woods, the music can be PUMPED......I'll talk to more peeps about it.... -

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 8:37 AMSweet!!
I've been entertaining the idea of trying to do the Rainbow Gathering trick of doing something out on National Forest land. They pack 30k+ folks every year in somewhere this way, without any formal organization or need to sell 'invitations'.
In my dream world, we could invite everyone for free, but I know that's probably just in my dream world...still, I'm personally thinking in terms of keeping all costs as near to nothing as possible.
There's an amazing national park that contains land from three states, the Ellicott Rock wilderness preserve, and I love that place for camping.
The plus side of this idea..it's there, we could just DO it, and it would certainly test everyone's radical self reliance, leave no trace ethic, and would be radically inclusive. Also it would be free.
The minus side...I actually don't think that loud noise is prohibited in any meaningful sense, but I'm pretty sure that fuel spilling IS, and that any fire activity would have to be strictly controlled. Also, I'd much prefer to inform the park service of what's happening, but they have a history in dealing with the Rainbows of initially agreeing, then disagreeing at the last minute and organizing a man's world response to shut it down. I'm not about trying to do something that would end up just being a raid. Any gathering larger than 75 people on national park land requires a permit, and the process of asking for that permit lets them know where you are.
It's hard as hell to explain to people that aren't familiar with the scene that we're not just a bunch of irresponsible pyromaniac freaks, that we're actually as much or more concerned with safety and the environmental impact as any other folks!! *Sigh*....
So maybe not a feasible idea but I've been entertaining it, anyway.

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 9:57 AMWhere have other burns in SC been held? Any chance of a repeat.
I was thinking outside of Charleston there are parks...
but the park service is interesting, word around the rainbow camp fire down here is that the Ocala National Forest where the last gathering was held, went poorly, they had a fire burn several acres and have been banned form the site. I am not sure if any of this is true, but that is the local lore on them.
So I am not sure what this would do in referrance to permitting.
Also on the concept of "free"
i love free.
my first organization was based on this notion and i would love to take the concept to the next level. the idea is specifically promoted to visual artist as well as musicians and the idea is that anyone can show there art and that people are welcome to create during the event. there is no sales comission taken if anything is sold, but it is meant to be a concept in the idea of creating an ispirationial collective.
merritt i'll call you about it, but i am sure that you would dig it. Yard Art Party's tag line "We're All Weird & We Need Each Other." seriously fun and wonderful and still happens once a month is Carolina Beach NC, started in my backyard. -

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 12:01 PMSomething in SC would SO rock. My poor little car would be very, very grateful.
I've been keeping my eyes/ears open anyways for a place, this is just one more reason to...

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 2:47 PMHow does rainbow deal with problems like 'human waste'? If we could organize a 'free' burn, that would be incredible, but some one has to pay for things like portajohns, if not the venue. -

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 2:58 PMIn a word, latrines...:)
Works like this. You dig a deep long trench, set a board over it with holes over it....etc...
This is cracking me up because for every festival I've ever dealt with, the conversation about how best to deal with the poo factor goes on and on and on and on...ROTFL...
YOU PEOPLE JUST HOLD IT!! ROTFLMAO!!!

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 3:09 PMLitter box, ha! I just hope that when I try to cover it up, I don't kick too much gravel onto other burners. Just make sure it clumps well :)
Latrines, right. They smell, but they work. Not a bad idea if it's cool with the land owners or park rangers. If it's a paid event, however, we should probably stick with porta-johns. For a free-burn, latrines are not a bad idea. -

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 8:39 PMWe've been offered the use of a site in Conneticut...
Um that's FAR...:(
But still, free site. I told them we wouldn't say no, exactly, but that we were certainly going to look for something closer!

Re: Locations
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 11:44 PMI am moving to Charleston and while this isn't currently related, i love your idea of getting money together to buy a chunk of land, that would be a great way to host burns in the future! Seriously wonderful idea!
Conneticut is very far away, if we can use the site may-be we could let others know so that they could hold there own burn there.
