I think it would be cool to make this costume for when I go to burningman next year but I have no idea how to go about making it. If anyone could help me that would be great!
Here is a link a pic of the costume:

Re: Costume help
Fri, June 9, 2006 - 5:34 PMWhoot!
You don't start small, do you!
The bottom half looks pretty easy. Three panels of various shapes and some loose pants. The belt can be built up from foam and cloth covered. The shoulder bit could be dicy. Boiled leather, maybe? Foam-core'd fabric? The helmet stumps me entirely.
Have you started looking at patterns to see if any of them match any of the pieces you'll need to sew up to do this costume?
...and have you taught yourself to sew yet? -

Re: Costume help
Sat, June 10, 2006 - 12:05 AMlol no I havn't looked at patterns yet. I wan't even aware I could do that for such a project! And yes, I can sew, but my abilitys are limited in their quality. Do you think I might be able to glean some help at a Stich-n-Bitch? When/Were is the next one? -

Re: Costume help
Sat, June 10, 2006 - 9:55 PMYou can always get help at a SnB, but be prepared to just ask advice and do it yourself.
Turns out some folks think a SnB is where other folks do your sewing for you. We disabuse them of that notion pretty fast, usually by pushing them towards a sewing machine. (grins!)
Absolutely. Look at patterns. You won't find everything you need, but you will find some of the pieces.
Say the pants. Those should be really easy to find. It's just a loose pant with a band of color added at the bottom.
The panels are just modified table runners (okay, panels of fabric with hemmed edges.) The fewer indented corners, the less you'll curse while sewing.
The shoulder bit and the helmet might stump you, but maybe not. Maybe you could build/sew them out of pleather so they can support themselves. Or headliner fabric (that fabric with foam backing they cover the insides of car roofs with. It's available at JoAnne's fabric - and interestingly, velcro sticks to it like crazy!) Headliner'd probably pick up a lot of dust...
Capes are dead easy (and there'll be patterns for 'em if you want one.)
Get thee to a sewing store and start perusing the pattern books!
Do you have the fabric already?
(Don't know when the next SnB is. Our house is in a muddle at the mo' with furniture everywhere. Maybe in a couple of weeks?) -
