Burners without Borders Call to Action in Iowa

Hello Iowa Burners,

Looks like there will be some assistance for the flooding that hit Iowa from everyone's favorite superheroes - Burners without Borders (www.burnerswithoutborders.org) . A person by the name Breandan from Chicago, via Peru, has just arrived in Cedar Rapids and is looking for help. Anyone that can assist with land to set up a base camp ,suggestions on hard hit areas that are in need , or would like to lend a hand would be great. He can be reached via the BWB website: http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/cedar-rapids-ia-flooded-join-us .

Want to make sure I ask everyone who may want to come support Capital City Pride (http://capitalcitypride.org/) weekend, we got the go ahead to do a bit of fire during the street festival. I'll try to contact everyone but I am forgetful sometimes.

(( For those bad people of you not on the Iowa Announce list - I know who you are :P))

The American Dream is fast approaching and I am excited that so many Iowans are going to their first burn this year!!!!!! You are all going to LOVE it. And for you vets, it will be great to be home again! I thought I would send some info of links I visited before my first big burn in 2006. I am a bit of an obsessive researcher so really was helpful for me to read about others experiences. I would also like to personally extend a hand to answer any questions you may have, nothing makes me happier than answering questions about Burning Man!!

Here are some links:

So tribesters...

This Cali girl is thinking outside the box and considering a big move to Iowa to finish school. As a student of both health and sustainability I have found a school that I am looking at where I could get a degree in both. This school seems to be amazing, the only problem-- the weather in Iowa. Also I know this school is very unconventional, sounds perfect, right? Does anyone know anything about MIM in Fairfield? Hows the town? Anyway I have alot to do before then and I am actually looking at next fall as I have to save some money and take care of a bunch of s&*( before I move. I will be going out in August to check it out and would love to hook up with some burner types while I am there. BTW how is the community all the way out there, I know that it is a fair distance from the playa but I have been amazed at the places people travel from to go to our little event...

I look forward to hearing from you...

If you are a fire performer and would like to participate in the Pre
Burn Ceremony at Interfuse 2008 , contact me at:

Vesuviustribalfire@gmail.com

All fire performers will be required to have a fire watch. Please include their name/s and email address in your request. Once your
request is received, You will be added to the Pre Burn Ceremony list
of performers & our yahoo group for access to diagrams and
communications about the Pre Burn Ceremony.
You and your fire watch/s name must be on our final performers list
to receive a laminate for entrance to the main circle on burn night.

The deadline date for signing up for the Pre Burn
Ceremony is April 20th at midnight :p

P.S.
I would have to say for the last 5 years that I have been organizing the Pre Burn Ceremony, this is the least amount of performers I have had sign up!! It seems it will be a lonely circle this year.

If you plan on spinning fire at the Pre Burn Ceremony.....Please dont procrastinate. I know you all are busy as all of us leads are as well. I dont want to hear any sob stories at Interfuse how you couldnt take 10 minutes of your day to sign up. Don't be THAT person.

Here are the names I have as performers so far:
Nova
Rae
Maile
Alonzo
Johnny
Yosh
Diana
Posh
Beacher
Kitt
Kaalin
Pyro
Medack
Nichelle

If you plan on spinning in the Pre Burn Ceremony and your name is not on this list, you haven't signed up with me. You can sign up at vesuviustribalfire@gmail.com

Iowa Burner Winter Update

Hello Iowa Burning Man Aficionados!

Hope everyone is keeping their toes warm - Nothing like a good ole Iowa winter to appreciate the spring. It is a good time to cozy up with a space heater and do some crafts or work on projects for the regional or big burn!

Speaking of which planning for Interfuse is going full swing. For those just joining or missing the other emails Interfuse is the Midwest Regional Burn located near Boonville, Mo. The land is beautiful and people are amazing. A good way to kickstart the summer. It is happening May 1-4 and details are at www.midwestburners.com/Interfuse. Check out the theme at http://www.midwestburners.com/events/themearchive/#TechnophiliaTechnophobia , good stuff with tons of room for interpretation and inspiration!

Discussion is underway for a joint theme camp with some other Iowa burners on the Iowa Massive forum, don’t be scared of the ravers…they don’t bite…much. Going to be big this year! Will have the normal music and karaoke but kicking it up a notch to get more art and whatever else we come up with before then, in the beginning planning stages at http://www.iowa-massive.com/viewtopic.php?t=400&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

This spring will have a meet and greet in March/April somewhere in Des Moines also to be able to get info for Burning Man! More info forthcoming.. I would like to have a stitch n bitch / art day sometime early spring also to start work on costumers for Interfuse/Burning Man. Any suggestions on places in Des Moines to do this or dates you may like to come let me know!

In the Burning Man world: tickets will be going on sale soon, you MUST have tickets prior to going – there will be NONE at the gate this year. Should be quite the change and interesting how it plays out. I sure know it is a lot of people’s American Dream! Here is how the tickets will run down this year (with thanks to Liz C for sending this out!)

Here's the ticket tier run-down:
$210 - only 10,000 - only 2 per person - online sales ONLY (in the past these have sold out fairly quick)
$225 - only 10,000 - only 2 per person - online and mail order (these take a little longer to sell out)
$250 - only 10,000 - online and mail order (these tend to take even longer to sell out)
$295 - while supplies last - online, mail order, and walk-in outlets
NO GATE SALES
More info, including info on purchasing, scholarship tickets, low income tickets, etc.:
http://tickets.burningman.com/

This weekend if anyone is around town we will be having a birthday party for Alyssa at The Lift (http://www.dmlift.com/) . Of course , we can’t just have any old normal party this will be themed with an 80s flavor. Goes from 9-2AM this Saturday. If anyone comes let me know!

As always, would love to meet with any other fellow Iowa Burners! Always up for questions and such. I have lots of resources about BM info as I am a bit of an obsessive researcher! Much love to the Iowa Family and beyond. 2008 is going to be AMAZING! Can’t wait and am sure you can’t either!

Thank you for striking the match that I HOPE has set the blaze that is the hurricane of fire... that is the tsunami of a movement across this nation... that will propell our beloved BARACK OBAMA all the way to the WHITE HOUSE!

I truly hope that MORE people wake up to what a critical juncture in history we have come to in this country and in the world, and the opportunity, the gift that has been presented to us as BARACK OBAMA!

I see Barack as the ONLY leader inspirational enough, smart enough, independent yet community minded enough, determined and diplomatic enough to lead this country out of the dark ages of divisive politics and the special interest/corporate strangle hold that has been steadily choking the life out of the average American and has tarnished our standing in the world!

THANK YOU for inspring THIS epic piece of oratory GENIUS!

Iowa, YOU were the first. You will ALWAYS be the first that expressed the BELIEF in what is POSSIBLE for yourselves, for this country for the world.

THANK YOU!

I just signed up to be a precinct captain for the Obama '08 campaign! West Hollywood, you may not know it yet, but YOU ARE OBAMA COUNTRY!

WE are on the cusp of something EXTRAORDINARY! WE are on the cusp of the NEW AGE, and WE are bringing it into being!

INTERFUSE 2008 ART THEME - Technophilia/Technophobia !!!!!!!!!!

Forwarded from post by: "Zay Thompson"
Thu Oct 25, 2007 10:10 am (PST)

Thanks for the great brainstorming and discussion of InterFuse theme ideas! The InterFuse 2008 Art Theme is now set and is described below.
--Zay, Midwest Burners

Technophilia/Technophobia
Technology: Do we love it or hate it? Does it isolate us or bring us together? Does it make our lives easier or does it add layers of complications? Do we own our tools or do they own us? Can we live without our technology? Can it live without us? We shape the world through our technology but to what extent does our technology shape our world views?

This theme is a study of modern life that is very relevant to us as burners. Modern technology is both a consumer product and a means to promote consumption. Yet it can also be used to create art and to connect us. Technology extremely enhances our creative abilities yet also enhances our destructive abilities. As we know from our experience with the fire arts, destructive technology can also result in positive beautiful things.

Burners are especially suited for examining our relationships with technology. We are some of the most technologically savvy people out there. We’ve used the tools of the internet to connect with each other and build a community like no other. We are intimately familiar with creating new uses for technology and subverting it to our own fun purposes.

At InterFuse 2008, we will mock, celebrate, exaggerate, demonstrate, and use technology to create. Bring your fearful or hopeful vision of our technological present and future. All robots, cyborgs, couch potatoes, slaves to the machines, Luddites, interactive tutorials, genetically enhanced humans, virtual selves, icons, nuts & bolts, flotsam & jetsam etc. are welcome! You can take this theme in any direction! Unveil a new and enhanced IF08 Theme version 2.0. Come set up your office cubicle camp, post-apocalyptic scenario, personal billboard, or cyber-utopia. Form a techno cult or create a reality TV game that has gone horribly awry. Show off your inventions, bio-fueled art car, or invite people to add to your open source installations. Create recycled trash art, build a DNA sculpture, or assemble something else so engaging that people find themselves sitting around it for 36 hours straight sipping energy drinks.

At the center of this technological cacophony will sit that most loved and most hated icon of modern technology, that mighty conduit of modern culture, that unmatched propaganda and marketing tool—THE TELEVISION! The TV will be large enough to serve as an open performance stage and projection screen. We will be filling our giant television with our own content. All participants are invited to create Premier Entertainment Programming and clever personal advertising to display on our TV. There must be NO dead air time!!

Our modern society churns out tons of STUFF! So, around the giant television will be piles of personal technology sculptures created by YOU. Bring an effigy of whatever technology you fantasize about burning. Does your cell phone drive you crazy? Build a larger than life cell phone with non-toxic materials like wood, cardboard, paper, cloth. NO BURNING ACTUAL PLASTIC TECH DEVICES! You could give your effigy evil teeth or put something in the screen to express it’s annoying qualities. Put your art on the pile around the TV and watch it all BURN on Saturday night when we use our favorite medium, fire, to transform technology and reclaim it as an authentic tool of our imaginations.

Welcome to the Machine!

Starting to plot what I want to do next year, I want to do something other than music so will be camped somewhere else most like. Any fun ideas?

BTW - the dates are May 1-4!!!!

No theme yet but I think it may be Technophobia, hope so since we all know how to make robot costumes lol.

4800 bicycles rode through the town of Fort Collins, Co, on Saturday Sept. 22.
It smashed Tiawan's previously recorded attempt of 1910 riders. It was an awesome event, much fun for all.
You can see some of the video here...
www.IdeaFilmFactory.com
... more to come.

With some coordination how many bikes do you think we could get together on the playa next year?! I bet we could smash this record!!!

Who's going to BM this year?

I am still on the fence, well not the fence per say mainly seeing if I can somehow make some magic happen with getting the cash and time off. The theme this year is so up my alley though!

So, anyone making the pilgrimage this year to Burning Man 2007 from Iowa?

As always, I am here to bounce questions off of and share the gobs of resources I accumulated last year!

2 LA Burners in CR June 1st - 8th

Hello My Lovely Burner Friends,

I'm coming home for a visit (after 5 years) and am bringing my burner s.o. for the first time. We've made plans for Friday night, June 1st, to meet family & friends at the Dragon Nightclub on 2nd Avenue in downtown Cedar Rapids after 11pm. We would LOVE to invite other burners to join us there that night. Please come too - give a call (phone # below) when you get there so we can find you.

We'll wear our burning man icon earrings and necklaces. Maybe some kind of blinkies too.

Also, we're planning on going out to a bar/nightclub on Saturday night June 2nd. Any burners want to meet up? Where? Please keep it in CR; we're dependent upon others for a ride. :)

Give a call at (213) 268-2710 either of those nights to find us.

Burner Love,
Tina (PrplT) & Andy (Loki)

Volunteer positions for Greening the burn

(pretty cool!)

Contact: KachinaKatrina@burningman.com for more information and contacts on these greening opportunities:

1.Environmental Section on the BM Website
Help spice up the Environmental Section on the Burning Man website in a 'resource center' with pages dedicated to: Materials, energy, lighting, gray water, recycling, re-using/salvage, composting, waste, the 6 R's, burning’ and more...
* We need writers, wed savvy people, and editors. Each of these pages will have: TIPS, FAQ, & RESOURCES

2.Cooling Man: Help wanted with offsetting
Cooling Man's mission is to unite art with science in the fight against climate change by sponsoring climatic artwork and helping participants understand and eliminate their climate impacts. To help support Burning Man 2007: The Green Man, and make Black Rock City the first 'carbon-neutral' city in the world, Cooling Man needs more hearts and hands. Please let us know if you'd like to help with this.
Work on a project to indicate global warming- equivalent to one Christmas light per square meter across the planet 1 s mile of Christmas lights-in a ball that show heat. 1500 lights- (number I got) –check with Jeff Cole and see- Right now he needs help to-make a globe- it is a square meter heat project-

3.Resource Directories, wiki – ways to green the burn
Adding resources and insight on ways to Green the Burn. Which include but not limited to: Materials, energy, lighting, gray water, recycling, re-using/salvage, composting, waste, the 6 R's, burning’ and more...
moving this information to the wiki (tech savvy people needed here!) and then getting this to the outreach team and the website team for the environmental section.

4.Communications, distribute information/ OUTREACH
Get the word out and updates on what is happening with greening Burning Man. Let people know where they can get involved, and share educational tidbits, and our resource directories with Burners around the world. You can also update the info for our wiki that will then lead into the Environmental section on the website. Help with our super sweet looking e-mail coming out, get this out to theme camps, participants, and your friends.

5.Energy Infrastructure / Power Supply
Need a lot of people to help install a solar array in Gerlach in July.
Contact: Tom Price: price_tom@hotmail.com

6.We will also have a 3,500 watt solar system ran lighting behind coffee bar, and some on the man base, we will need some help installing this. Efficient Energy solar was the company that supplied this and a month and 1/2 after the event these panels were powering people’s homes in Southern California. If we can get more than one company doing this, we can have multiple stations and more homes being solar powered! Power light is the company that is powering the man base. This is a great time to learn and contribute– however we can all gain a great deal by working together like this.
CONTACT: Blue@burningman.com

7.Composting
This is composting opportunity is for the ranch from the commissary (there place that feeds the staff). No for individuals or camps. One step at a time. We’re all here to learn new things and make things happen. Andy Man is a Resource and is down to help wit composting- their company can’t do anything- however he will help with signs and more. Our board members are into it, one even is researching more including mushroom composting and more- all loosing at this being a stream of revenue and decrease coast of hauling food waste away as trash. Goal: this can be an addition income stream, or can be a giant labyrinth. The neighboring ranch sometimes uses human waste.

8.Workshops and Coordination
Host workshops and/or coordinate the workshops before the burn and on-playa. You can do this anywhere... if you are in San Francisco you can use the Burning Man headquarters. If you live somewhere else we can help connect you to your regional rep. The workshops coordination involves scheduling and getting people involved in places to learn more about greening principals and the 6 R’s (Respect, rethink, reduce, re-use, recycle, restore). Coordinating logistics and people with ideas to make the workshops happen.

9.Transportation & Clean Fuels
Organize clean fuels transportation on and off the playa, and share this information with our education and resources information. Help organize transportation for the Burn... to and from the Play to Reno, the Airport, etc.
Work with the BurnCleanProject.org
OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT:
* Contacting truck rental places, and see about bio-fuels opportunities
* Research
* Organize rideshares and supporting the existing BM rideshare

10.Top 10 ways to Green Your Burn
Get the TOP 10 list out to everyone you know!! in a week we will have a polished list of the top 10 simple ways to be a green burners.

11.Chlorophyll Collective – help ‘em out!
The Chlorophyll Collective is creating a "greenhouse gas capture and sequestration from a generator's exhaust by photosynthetic organisms." They will show how algae can be used to "green" exhaust emissions from combustion-based power generators on or off the playa. Bio-diesel fueled is best for many reasons… however any kind will work with this project.
They have come up with a list of materials and costs, some of the key items are blower, high-pressure water pump, etc. to be donated-
something that the BM network might be able to help us accomplish this??
This list needs to get into the hands of industrial scrap folk who can help us get these materials for free or cheap.
Contact: Dr. Friendly himself, AKA Aaron Wolf Baum: drfriendly@drfriendly.tv

12.Biodiesel Ideas
Biodiesel Ideas-
1. Get the word out about BM being all bio-diesel this year and let people know about the BurnCleanProject.org resources. Provide incentives... ideas?
2. How to do the conversion of a diesel engine to veggie oil in a cool way?
3. Bring in something to make bio-disel reactor-kiosk to show how it works. –everyday from 3-5 bring cooking oil and out comes fuel.
4. Who has an amazing display that talks about how biodiesel works?
5. Talk about Bio-diesel! A woman named Margot is making biodiesel, we'd appreciate a volunteer who is smart who can talk to her about her display. Envision aesthetic framework- Make it fun, do a song and dance!!

13.Informational Kiosk
Informational Kiosk...
1. Who has groovy ideas for: themes-water -energy, agriculture transportation, solid waste, etc.
2. Eco-groovy designs for building these info stations?
3. People to help build these!

14.Grey Water education
Grey Water education, get the word out about best practices and more. Check out the Earth Guardian's Water Works project and share the information with the rest of Black Rock City!! This includes evaporation practices as well. please, work with Sarah directly on this. I'm sure she'd love to hear your ideas. Let's make sure that we are giving consistent information to participants about grey water options.

15.Baseline Environmental Report on Burning Man
One volunteer sought for supporting the production of a baseline environmental report on the Burning Man project. Must be a seasoned expert in gathering and compiling baseline information.
Contact Dr.E. directly at elizd@elizd.com; 510-776-1780.

16.Build Green Map of the city, and organize a "renewable energy tour"
Build Green Map of the city, and organize a "renewable energy tour" Much like the Media Mecca organizes the "art tour" for folks

17.How nature solves problems using Mushrooms and more
How nature solves problems using Mushrooms and more... What could Mushroom Man do at Bman? How about other things like this that could show nature solving problems? BMORG especially likes the angle of saving old growth trees in the name of national defense since certain mushrooms are the only known anti-nerve agent for nerve gases.

19. Administrational support
help get the details managed so things keep on target and we all stay sane. Help take notes and distribute them after the meetings, work with burners with out boarders staff and green team volunteer coordinator, a bit of data base entry.

HAVE AN IDEA and it’s not here, simply e-mail: KACHINAKATRINA@BURNINGMAN.COM and we’ll add it to the list.

2) Ice at InterFuse

3) No early camping this year

4) Gate info

6) Burn Barrel decoration

7) Climbable effigy and deadline

===================================
InterFuse Deadlines
===================================
April 20 is the big day!
The 20th is the last day to:
Buy tickets http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse/tickets.html
Over half the tickets are sold and you have only a week left to buy them so stop procrastinating!

Register with Agni Tara agnitara@excite.com to play with fire in the pre-burn ceremony. You must have a spotter

Register your burnable art for placement http://www.midwestburners.com/InterFuse/artandartists.html

Register your Art, Event, Performance, or Themecamp so it will be included in the Front Gate Handout. http://www.midwestburners.com/InterFuse/

======================================
Ice at InterFuse
======================================
Ice is an essential part of a multi-day burns' infrastructure. We don't want a bunch of people getting food poisoning and we don't permit in-outs to go purchase more ice. So, like Burning Man and various regional burns, Midwest Burners is allowing ice sales as the exception to our decommodified space.

Since InterFuse is now a 4 day event, our host, Ozark Avalon is providing the ice service for InterFuse 2007.

Ice Location: At the Gate in a freezer. Please shut the lid securely after you get ice.

Price: $1.50 per bag, payment via the honor system. Plan to bring change.

Dates and Times that ice will be available:
Thursday: 8 AM - Midnight
Friday: 9 AM - Midnight
Saturday: 9 AM - 9 PM

======================================
Wednesday Workday, Campground closed May 2
======================================
There is NO early camping this year. In past years it was very tough to set up the gate and place sound camps etc when many folks were already camping. Gate registration after many people had arrived was also a pain. It was a headache for OA as well to mow around campsites and to try to collect early campground fees.

So, Ozark Avalon is closed on Wednesday and only folks setting up the InterFuse infrastructure and volunteers working Thursday morning shifts will be onsite. You may only come onsite if you're on the Wednesday Workday list.

===========================================

Iowa Camp Site and Stage??

Would anyone be interested in having an Iowa Camp Site for interfuse, we could have a theme, do deco and all that good stuff?? Theres already works to have an Iowa stage to feature Iowa djs as well as other mid-western djs so we would have the space available to us to camp if we want it. The camp site would more then likely be by the stage so that we can keep it all together. The music wont consist of anything to heavy, mostly IDM, Chill and Down Tempo after 2am. Thoughts???

Wing Party

I am thinking about hosting a party to make fairy/angel/vampire/bat wings and other fun things for Interfuse...seem like fun? Would have it on my place on a weeknight or weekend coming up..any conflicts with anyone, seem like something fun to do?

They are really easy to make but you can really make them unique. maybe meet at my place then go looking for supplies to decorate them.

Here are some basic instructions, from http://www.squidoo.com/fairywings/ :

For making wings, you'll want:
- 14g-16g galvanized steel wire. The wire should bend easily, but not too easily or your wings won't hold their shape.
- wire cutters
- duct tape or heavy electrical tape
- pantyhose or sheer material. Hose takes less sewing.
- scissors
- safety pins
- needle and thread
- ribbon, wide cording or elastic (to make ties for wearing the wings)
- wing decorating stuff = fabric paint, glitter, feathers, rhinestones, silk flowers, fringe, whatever!

To start, bend the wire into the overall shape of your wings. You can make a figure eight with the wire, or two loops. Use the tape to fasten the loops and/or to fasten them to each other. This taped part is the "spine" of your wings so make sure it's strong but not too bulky. Pay attention to how big your wings get. Too wide and you'll have problems walking around. Too long and you'll have trouble sitting down when wearing them.

Once you get the basic wings assembled, you then cover them. If you got pantyhose, you cut each leg off and stretch it over the wires. Patterned or sparkly pantyhose can make the wings fancy. If you got sheer material, wrap and stitch the material onto the wing frame. Make sure to use the lightest material you can, so your wings don't get too heavy.

Next, add the straps for wearing. This way, you can still sew and bend the wings to shape without hurting any of the art. Most people like having four straps to fasten their wings: one going over each shoulder and one going under each arm, then tied across the chest. Don't make your wings tie across the front of your throat because you can hurt yourself if you snag your wings. Wings can also be sewn onto the back of clothing. Having a friend who can hold your wings in place while you work out the straps is very helpful!

Then, once the wing shape is set and you can attach them to yourself, decorate them to your heart's content. Be careful again to not make the wings so decorated that they bend out of shape or make your upper back sore when you wear them. If you have buts if wing decorations left over, a thin wooden dowel can easily be made into a matching fairy wand.

Drum Circles (or the lack thereof) in Cedar Rapids

yes, I am looking to jam with some people. I have a conga and would love to get together with at least 4 or 5 other people who want to just sit and jam.

I find there is a serious lack of activities in Cedar Rapids that don't involve bars, beers and other things I don't want and can't afford.

So, anybody out there? Got a drum? Wanna take the plant off of it and use it?

hoopers and spinners too...you guys need a rhythm section?

cheers

============================
InterFuse 2007 Ticket Sales Information
=============================

REMINDER: You must be a member of the Midwest Burners Association to purchase an InterFuse 2007 ticket. Association membership is different than yahoogroup membership.
To become a member please visit www.midwestburners.com/membership/
If you are unsure of whether you are a member, please contact zay@midwestburners.com

Hi there,
We're heading back to the Cedar Rapids area the first week in June - wondering if there's some cool stuff going on for a couple of BM Burners to do?

Lots of information is up on the site as far as participation for events and art, what are you contributing? Put it on the site! Volunteer!! Ranger shifts are up if you feel the calling. I personally am going to do a ton of volunteering this year. It may seem like work, but it is the kind of work that is fun! I know many of you are planning things to do, so get them on the site so they get on the info flyer: http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse .

On a personal note, I am doing a performance type piece to go along with my sculpture I am creating, I may have the need for a couple of assistants..preferably some lovely ladies :) Still working out the details but if anyone is interested in being part of it let me know. Of course with this piece everyone is a participant so make sure you find a timepiece to place on the sculpture to free yourself from whatever aspect of time you'd like - letting go of the past, fear of the future, fucking up the present...whatever personally meaning you may have.

Only 2 months away!!!!!! So excited for Interfuse already, can't wait to be home with all my homies!

Interfuse Volunteer Info!!

I am going to try my hand at Rangering this year (as well as my usual Greeting :D), so y'all better be nice!
~

Since the InterFuse 2007 area of the MWB website went online 2 weeks
ago, several people have already volunteered their time and talents.
We need many more.

Check out the available positions at:
http://www.midwestburners.com/interfuse/volunteer.html

You can volunteer for a position (or 2 or 3) using the form at the
bottom of that page. You can volunteer up until 2 weeks before
InterFuse - but why wait?

Of the positions listed, Gate Greeters, Leisure Army, and Rangers
need volunteers sooner because they have their own Yahoo Groups for
pre-event coordination, training, and discussion. This setup worked
well last year.

Also, InterFuse has an extra day this year so we need more volunteers
than ever, especially at Gate.

Please consider volunteering a few hours. It's loads of fun no
matter what position you choose.

OK ya'll... former Kansas City-based burner, now in Grinnell Iowa.
How organized are we up here in the tundra? Do we have regular meet n' greet get together moments, pot lucks, yadda yadda yadda?

One or two of you know me, but I'm not sure I've met others. It would be a hoot!

"Meet the New You" exhibition opening

Some friends of mine are adding some music to the opening. Haven't really done much like this in Des Moines so think that a rousing group of enthusiastic people that love art showing up would possible inspire more similiar events!

The art looks cool too!!

~

The concept of this exhibition is 'scenes from the future' - how our everyday lives will be transformed with advances in science and technology. The show will include 4 artists, with each artist being represented by several works. Artists include Bryan Crockett (U.S., sculpture), Sabrina Raaf (U.S., photography), Ruud Van Empel (Holland, photography), and Magnus Wallin (Sweden, video). This exhibition is organized by Laura Burkhalter, assistant curator.

The music:

Melodic Animations is an electronic music duo brought together to perform and create experimental beats and melodic grooves that paint a musical landscape for your mind...

The players:

elChill (Lewis Charles Hill II) - Armed with digital and analog music making devices, he explores every style of music he can and loves to entertain. Drums, bass, keys, and vocals are his forte, but a Beat-Box and/or Djembe solo are sure to set it off.

Digitize (Matthew McKissick) - Augmenting the sounds through the use of turntable and mixing technology, he will be bringing sounds and samples of various down tempo, trip-hop, and acid-jazz artists into the mix.

(check out last years info for more stuff)

Well, Interfuse is FOUR days next one! Amazing! More time to create, live , love, party, dance, make art, love , whatever! I am getting excited about this and starting to think of how I can contribute to it and thought that others may want to cocreate something along the theme lines. I have heard tell of Iowans making an "80s mobile" and other things that would be cool to do group help with but maybe a community art project would be fun too, something MASSIVE and INTERACTIVE just like on TV :D

Of course open to any ideas as long as we can do something together!

Welp, I think we need some time to let our freak flag fly. Trying to think of some fun artsy thing to maybe have a meetup then head to a bar where we can maybe dress up a little and play with flow toys and chitchat or whatever. Specifcally in Des Moines, I am hoping to just start getting like minds together to get something started in this city. I believe there are many freaks out here in Central Iowa just waiting for a place to SHINE so be nice to have some semi regular thing like every other month in the capital city.

Any thoughts? Sound fun?

I think it would be cool to get all the Iowa folk together once a month somewhere in varying places across the state (to keep it fair for people to get there easier sometimes). Maybe some art thing, get dressed up, play with toys, share a meal, etc. Prolly have to be a Friday since we are usually so busy on Saturdays :D
