We started this martial arts business within the last year. There's still so much to learn.
Your feedback on our homepage is greatly appreciated:

BTW, is there any places out there that will help startups with tax for free? We just want somebody to point out the obvious and get us a head-start on the tax stuff.

Re: please comment on our new website
Wed, March 22, 2006 - 10:52 AMHello G,
Your website is pretty nicely designed. Their are only two change that I would make to it . One would be an adjustment of the photos in the right hand column. I would use the blue border on the top graphic as the outside margin and bring all the photos flush with that image rather than having a "ragged" right hand margin.
The other thing is I would include more of a "listed" resume for your husband. Something similar to the one that Professor Hargrave has on his site : www.leejkd.com/web/president.htm
primarily because people like the facts to back up the claims. That said, I would not remove the text that is written about your husband because it is very personable and gives a person a warm feeling about him.
On to Income Taxes -
It is really pretty simple. and the IRS has great resources for small businesses.
www.irs.gov/businesses/small/index.html is your first resource.
Begin here:
www.irs.gov/businesses/s...01169,00.html and order a copy of Publication 1066C, A Virtual Small Business Tax Workshop DVD it is free! and its very well done.
The IRS also has online streaming video workshops you watch here:
www.irs.gov/businesses/s...97726,00.html
Get a copy of IRS publication 334 - Tax Guide for Small Business which you can dowload as a pdf file here: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p334.pdf or you can order one online to have it mailed to you here: www.irs.gov/formspubs/pa...10768,00.html Enter number 334 into the form and click Search and it will take you to the order page. This is a good publication to have in print form. Its about 55 pages and you can sit down with it and a highlighter and read through it in a couple hours and highlight the things that are applicable for your business. You could also just call : 1-800-829-3676 to order publication 334.
The IRS also has local taxpayer assistance centers you can find the one closest to you here: www.irs.gov/localcontact...98259,00.html
As much as people hate the IRS, honestly they are truly set up to help people with their tax concerns and questions. And contrary to popular belief - even the IRS wants you to pay the least amount of tax possible. They want you to pay only what you legally owe and will help you to make sure that you don't pay more than you legally owe.
Good Luck !

Thu, March 23, 2006 - 4:48 PMHi Blake,
Thanks for all the good information. You seemed to be in touch with the JKD realm. Where do you practise? BTW, we're affiliated with Carter at some point but then we broke off. His website is much improved.
I promise to read through all the stuff you pointed me to, but if you don't mind a quick question, what's your take on incorporating our martial arts school into an S-Corp? -

Thu, March 23, 2006 - 11:15 PMI could not imagine running a business where people run the risk of personal injury without being incorporated. You really need to make sure that your personal assets are protected from your business liability. We live in the most litigious state in the country and lawsuits for even the smallest personal injury are common and often over compensated.
In the early 90's a young girl in CA, she was 7 or 8 years old, was on a swingset in a public park and pinched her finger in the chain on the swing and it tore the skin open and left a scar. The woman successfully sued the city on the grounds that the scar on her daughters hand ruined any possibility that she would be a successful hand model when she grew up. The court awarded her $250,000.00. And that was without any serious injury. So, I would definately form a corporation and then make sure that you have really good liability insurance.
Good Luck and Good Success!

Re: please comment on our new website
Sat, July 29, 2006 - 11:04 PMHi. I think your website has great information on it, but you might think about adding more links. Having so many facts on the first page can be overwhelming for viewers. When I write web copy, I tend to put very few words on the first page, with clearly marked links for more info. You might want to put links for more info on types of martial arts, how to contact, etc. Hope that helps!

Sun, July 30, 2006 - 6:29 AMor AT A MINIMUM change some of the font styles up a bit to easily distinguish between paragraphs / sections. Like either use a BOLD ALL CAPS for section headers or different colored fonts or something. yeah - it kinda' just all runs together a bit right now.
the bruce lee soundbyte is an awesome touch - i thought it was hillarious
