I'm a media dude in Massachusetts, curious about the venture climate in Massachusetts.
The reports keep telling us that Massachusetts is a center for venture start-ups, but I don't think the edge has quite come off the recession here.
Still, my agency has been picking up new venture-backed clients (we specialize in start-ups.) Is everyone still out of work? What are people telling folks face-to-face?

Re: Venture funding in Massachusetts -- a little gossip
Fri, December 19, 2003 - 9:04 AMGeorge, suggestion...subscribe to Venture Wire newsletter for free (or they have a paid subscription). You will get daily updates about the VC world -- where they are investing, how much, where, when, etc. I've been getting it for the past few years (prior to the "burst") and it's a quick look at the investing activity...AM

Also, check into Babson College in Wellesley. They have some great VC networking events.

Me personally: People will not invest in a business they don't understand. I am running on the fringes of Biotech and a services company. While each of my contracts lands a minimum of $15K, it does not pre-qualify me for investment. I have done business with Anheuser-Busch and Bristol-Meyers Squibb and most recently pitched a $2M proposal to one of the worlds largest biotech labs. STILL, investors do not understand what it is I do, and do not appear to take interest simply because I do not fit into the rigid pre-qualification mold that they will invest in. This makes little sense to me, as I have a proven billion dollar model that is getting early interest from Senators and industry alike. STILL, banks look at credit and VC remains unflexible.
Until my lightnink strikes the clocktower, I am going to keep selling my lemonade.
God luck -
