I just joined this tribe and am also pretty new to business ownership as well. In June I left my job of almost 10 years as a Social Worker to start my own internet based company. I make personalized jewelry and work with schools and other non-profit organizations donating $5 of the sale of each bracelet to the organization. They don't have to take orders, money, or deliver products. It is all done on line.

Right now I'm marketing to as many schools as I can a week. I have a couple of people who are marketing for me, but they really aren't following through on what they commited to. So, I'm doing pretty much all of it myself.
I believe that you need to plan your week ahead of time. You only need about 30 minutes to plan out your entire week. I've come across an acronym that has been helpful. It is called the O.A.T.S. Formula. (Adapted from the Manager's intelligence report)

O: Objectives. What results do you want to see by the end of the week? Write them down and rank them. (This is a form of TO-DO-LIST ranks by importance).

A: Activities. What do you have to do to achieve your goals (objectives)? List the necessary activities, and put them in sequence underneath each Objective.

T: Time. How much time will each activity require? To plan realistically, allow yourself more time than you think you might actually need. This gives you flexibility if unexpected problems arise.

S: Schedule. Look at your calendar and decide when you can do each activity. Many I've worked with will underestimate the power of a schedule, but the reality is that you won’t get a think done if you don’t schedule appropriate time to do it.

Your Schedule should be broken into three parts: Personal, Have-To-Do, and Want-to-do.

Personal is everything you accomplish for you and your family. It is your own personal time that you must take. It can include getting the oil changed in your car, having lunch with your kids at school, taking your kids to sports practice, getting your hair cut, vacation, etc.

Have-to-do are all the things you must accomplish in the week (See OATS) above.

Then the Want-to-do might be read a book, call a friend on the phone, etc...

The goal is to get your schedule under control... rather than your schedule controlling you. If you need help in this area, please let me know. I would be happy to help.

Sincerely,
Philip A. Foster, MA

Hello everyone...

I hope that you are having a good day. My name is Philip Foster and I am the new moderator for this group. Many of you have already e-mailed me off line expressing your welcome and concern about the status of the group and the lack of conversations, etc that take place here.

First I wanted to let you know that I plan to be an active moderator here in the group. I hope to engage many of you in discussions and invigorate the group with ideas and activity. I welcome you all to participate in the threads as much as possible. There are no dumb questions here… we are all at different stages in the business cycle and we need to respect that in each other. We want everyone to feel comfortable entering and participating (as long as they are not here to SPAM or recruit us for some MLM or get-rich-scheme). If you feel someone is violating this rule, please feel free to contact me privately and I will investigate and take appropriate action as needed.

As a reminder, this is a tribe for anyone who is interested in serious discussions concerning all aspects of early-stage business start-ups and tech ventures. Great conversation is always welcome; get rich scams, MLMs, and spam is not. Please keep on topic with the title of this tribe – BUSINESS START-UPS.

I welcome any suggestions or feedback that you for the group. Above all what would make this group really interesting is the actual participation by its members.

Now for some house cleaning… below are the other rules that govern this group. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Again, thank you for your participation. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you soon.
DISCUSSION TOPICS (Threads):
Threads should only be used for discussion – no job listings, items or services for sale, or off the topic of this tribe. Absolutely NO SPAM, MLM, Get-Rich-Quick, etc will be allowed in threads. Such messages will be deleted and you will be booted from the group.

PHOTO ALBUM:
Post a photo of anything you like as long as it’s relevant to the tribe. No get-rich-quick or spam and keep it within Tribe.net’s TOU guidelines.

LISTINGS:
Post all the job listings (or whatever) that you want, but please, no duplicates within 30 days and no MLMs, get-rich-quick or SPAM. If your listing title is in all caps and the only way a person can learn more is to send you a private message – you’re spamming.

EVENTS:
Announce your grand opening, open house, car wash, garage sale, seminar, book signing, or fund raiser! No duplicates within 30 days and no MLMs, get-rich-quick or spam, please.

RECOMMENDED:
Recommendations are great for sharing information on local favorites, service vendors, or whatever… Just finished a good book or know of a great bookstore? Saw a good TV show, movie, band, or play? Just found out about a great website, dentist, computer-repair guy, or restaurant? Create a ‘recommended’ listing and share it with us here! Please, no duplicates within 30 days and no get-rich-quick or spam.

*********************************************************
If you haven’t figured it out by now - this is NOT a get-rich-quick discussion group and we DO NOT allow spam.

Please do not start job-listing threads unless there are specific facets of the job or its description that you’d like to *discuss*. Use the ‘Listings’ feature for job postings.

If you start a thread that uses vague language, the title is in all CAPS, a person can only learn more by contacting you in a private message, or if it just seems like spam – it will be deleted and you will be sent a private message by the moderator explaining that it ain’t cool. I have *NO* problem reporting you to Tribe.net’s T.O.U. even after *one* violation.

In my MBA business consulting project have come across an inventor who is a professor and one of the world's authorities in odor control. He has discovered a molecular compound that destroys the bacteria that cause bad breath. He has also invented a pre-shower wash that destroys the bacteria causing body odor. He has also developed sprays for foot and pet odor that are far more effective than the standard products.

The problem is that he has been trying to commercialize his product range for nearly 10 years with very little success.

I am having to assume that his product line meets its claims. He has in the past taken been in contact with the main toiletery and toothpaste manufacturers like Unilever, Colgate, Gillete etc but never managed to close a major deal.

He has patent protection on all his IP. There is no problem regarding food and drug regulations. (After burning through around $900,000 from investors and incubator secured finance, R&D is complete).

The only product he has out in the market at the moment is a license of his compound as part of a breath cleansing chewing gum to a small manufacturer. The product is doing well.

I am still trying to get to the bottom of why past approaches to the big corporates has failed, but in the meantime trying to look forward to market positioning and lining up the sort of target companies that could be relevant. I am concentrating on the breath freshener compound. This compound can go into toothpaste, mouthwashes, chewing gums, confectionary drops, and basically any type of food/drink.

The inventor does not manufacture the compound -- but it is fairly cheap to make -- and his approach (which I think is correct ) is to license or offer it as part of a joint venture. An example of this sort of approach would be nutrasweet.

My thought is to go with dynamic companies that are one tier below the major players and to iniitally aim at the 18 - 25 age group with the product as one that has an 'attitude" based on sexuality and the power of kissing with confidence.

This is a large market and his compound does offer sustainable competitive advantage. Looking for creative ideas and inspiration on how to make this really fly.

Thanks.

I am an English E.S.L. teacher entrepreneur operating locally in condition of quasi monopoly in Northern Québec, in a strong growth tourist area. I have recently signed the local banking business.
I am ready to take it to the next step.
Because the local population is generally uneducated, I have designed a language training course under guise of a brunch that would allow the general population to come and practice English in a convivial setting. The whole activity, for now, is slated for two and a half hours of practice plus a half an hour of my answering special question as I am also a translator and willing to provide answers to pointy linguistic questions as a marketing plot. I have found the ideal setting for leading such activities and secured very good prices. I have other similarly planned activities that are raising the same problems.
My problem is how to secure payment for such linguistic activities. My purpose is to make it simple as not to have to hire extra work force and bring the price up and complicate the process. I don’t want to have to restructure my business plan though I may have to do that at one point. I was thinking of a monthly subscription as a mean to develop customer loyalty.
How can I best secure payment in advance: pay pall or other similar outfits, the credit card route (are there traps because there sure are costs), automatic payment through a bank card, checks. I don’t feel like accepting payment in cash at the front door, since I will be busy monitoring, but perhaps I should do that. Any idea of how I should go about this.
This whole English teaching bit is more of a fun thing for me as I enjoy it and it is an effective way of becoming locally known. It is a means of getting me out of the house and interacting and breaking my isolation, always dangerous in a remote country environment.Translation is a higher paid field but I need balance. Just giving you background information.

We are finally hiring people (past the general counsel...that was the first necessity) to reduce the workload and responsibilities of us, the founding partners so that we may sleep. But with this comes a need to collaborate. I am handing off the lovely sales part of my job to someone but this takes time b/c I have the relationships and he has to come up to speed and get all the introductions.

We sell a fairly niche service relating to standards implementation in relation to OSS/BSS through SOA etc. So the sales cycle is a bit long. (I am trying give enough info so as to get the best answer here). We do not sell in bulk in other words.

So hopefully this is enough info.

I would like some suggestions toward a CRM/Pipeline management tool, something that we can pop on the web and will allow itself to grow with us. We need to be able to simply visualize where each deal is in the pipeline and the potential capital and scope for each project in order to project hiring etc.

Suggestions?
I'm considering opening a flower shop. I'm considering this because I believe I'll have very little start up costs, and the city I want to open up in, although very small, doesn't currently have a flower shop. The city is growing very quickly and I'd like to be the first flower shop there.

My question is this... I'm wondering if anyone here has started a flower shop and if they could give me an idea what kind of advertising/gimmicks work best to bring customers in and how much sales I might expect during my first 6 or 9 months of business.

Thanks for any input/ideas. Have a great weekend.

The idea is for a chain of espresso primarily take-out cafes that would serve a very high-quality espresso product, and this would be a totally new concept for much of the UK. I have almost a decade of experience in owning and running cafes here in Seattle, and the opportunity to start one in the UK, where I could earn the pound is one that is just too much to pass up.

I have a passion for life - for my life, my kids ’lives, and all of our lives …so I have to share my passion and my vision (that follows) with you …hoping that it might lead you to more hope-filled, joyful and sustainable lives.

First, for perspective, the next paragraph is the important part of world history in a single paragraph. Then, I hope to enlist you in joining the Aikido Activism Movement, a movement that can face today ’s deepest challenges with the most empowered approach to change.

THE IMPORTANT PART OF WORLD HISTORY IN A PARAGRAPH
Humanity has passed from a first great era of primarily physically-mediated conflict to one today of primarily economically-mediated conflict (see for example, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, by John Perkins - http://www.tinyurl.com/4tebc or http://www.tinyurl.com/5t8j9 ) and NOW we can and must advance to an era of primarily reason-mediated conflict. In each of the earlier eras people by and large did the best they could with what they had (as they will today and in the future only now with much better tools for communication which MUST be used for increased understanding, which -- fortunately -- can naturally translate to caring). The problem of capitalism today was less a problem when it was invented as a solution to feudal imperialism (with regular physical conflict). Economic imperialism has yet further removed the suffering from view of the beneficiaries of economic imperialism; but, in order to link with economic subjects, a global network has been built that can actually be used to bring people together -- and while inter-tribal, international, and intercorporate engagements in ages of primarily physically-mediated and primarily economically-mediated conflict have a history of being quite exploitive (if not deadly), engagements in the dawning age of reason can evolve to be much more like a dance, yet still a dance of joy or survival depending on one's viewpoint. The key should be seeing the power of inclusion, which can bring joy and unity -- replacing profit maximization with fruition maximization as a necessity for sustainability/survival and joy in a globalizing era.

My passions have been channeled into writing about a systematic solution to this systemic problem of today: that corporations do both the most good and the most bad, but it is their ability to hide bad things in the complexity of corporate behavior and in the popular but treacherous myth they promulgate -- "greed is good" -- that has led to essentially all major world problems.

Efforts to overpower corporations with grass roots public fervor or death-of-their-excesses by a thousand cuts from non-profits or NGOs appear to be having little effect, so why not turn the tools of corporations (and their economic might) against their regressive practices? This is Aikido Activism, my passion that I hope will become yours in a budding movement that everyone should want to join - and that anyone and everyone with a computer and Internet access is empowered to advance by sharing parts of the puzzle (how Aikido Activism can be applied in their field and applying it), supporting other Aikido Activists, getting the word out electronically, etc.

Change is possible. Find out who some Aikido Activists are who are working for progressive transformation of outworn social traditions –and please share any comments, ideas, connections, at the new wiki-website http://aikidoactivism.xwiki.com/ where there is a growing amount of information begun to be collected and organized online to advance the Aikido Progressive Movement – to understand our past and build a promising opportunity for our future.

I've started a business at home (hosting for a new internet product I've developed) in my spare time. While the business is profitable, I still have my full time job, and don't think my business will make salary-replacement profits for another year and a half. To complicate things, my business is questionably associated with my job (although not remotely competing) so I hesitate to mention anything to colleagues at work after signing some absurd agreement when I started.

I hesitate to look for investment money when I can do (and profit from) everything myself. However, working a full time job makes my business move forward much more slowly than it would if I was working on it full time. I also wonder whether I'll be able to handle up to the volume required to replace my salary while still working (I'm thinking yes, but it makes me nervous).

I'd be interested hearing others' experiences transitioning from a full-time salary to living off the income of their business, and how they did it.

I've got a tribe here that's trying to get a multimedia/personal electronics startup going.

So far, I've got a few multimedia artists on-board (at least, in the tribe) but we haven't met <in person> yet.

No funding, biz plan, or core group has formed yet <beyond myself> but there is a lot of talent here.

It's a private tribe, so to join I need either
a) Resume/CV
b) an informal listing of skills/experience that you can offer

and lastly, what kind of goals would you have?

Personally, I see these BUSH times as a chance for small businesses to get off the ground. All the layoffs in IT & creative media has left a lot of talented folks jobless, highly talented, and looking for direction.

And I don't want to work for the corps anymore.

If you're of like mind, and willing to put in some effort, now's your shot!
Looking at 2004 as the time to go.
Come & join us now!

PEACE

PS: We also have a yahoo group, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/threewaysmedia/
but to join I'd like you to look at the tribes site first.
