Cascade BWB June Work Party

BRING IT!

The Cascade Regional Chapter of Burners Without Borders is pleased to announce that we have found a new and more deserving space to cleanup and help make sparkle this weekend.

The previously announced site (Eastside Esplanade) was deemed to be too small, and too clean, for us. So we abandoned that idea and chose to direct our attentions at a somewhat neglected piece of public land that is being transformed into a place for public art exhibition. And we all love art, right?

As a bonus, this site is right on a principal bike route and will receive mucho traffic this Sunday due to Pedalpalooza. So we plan to set up a few tables as a combination hydration station and info booth for BWB as well as the new public art park. Look for us at the base of the Concord Ave overpass over N Going St. Should be fun!!

So the details are:

1627 N Going Court at N Concord Ave (in Portland near Going/Interstate)
Sunday, June 22, 2008
We’ll start setting up around 9:30am
Work starts around 10:30am
We’ll stop when the place looks great or everyone has left.
This is a rain-or-shine event.
Wear something ORANGE!!
As usual, everyone is asked to bring their own work gloves.

Here is a link via Google Maps: http://tinyurl.com/5j7lm2

Feel free to stop by for any length of time. There is no need to spend the entire day on this project, but if you do we will love you oh so much more!

We’ll be doing general yard work, lawn mowing, cleanup, tree-trimming, litter removal, sweeping and the like. Nothing too skilled or too strenuous this time. And if you’re looking to really add to your karma account, consider bringing one or more of the following tools that we will need and do not have:

Pruner
Chainsaw
Polesaw
Bowsaw
Pushbroom
Generator (and gas)
Extension Cords (long, at least 12 gauge)
Utility Trailer
Pickup Truck
Garbage Bags (heavy-duty contractor bags)

If you’re not one of those people with a barn full of yard tools, don’t worry. We’ll also be looking for ways to help support the Pedalpalooza riders which means we can use:

Lemonade
Water Jugs (5-gal or larger)
Cookies and/or other tasty treats
Apples, bananas, oranges, etc
Small paper cups
Folding tables
Basic bike repair tools

This work party is going to be fun and suitable for all ages. Tell all your friends and bring them along too. As always, contact me directly with any questions.

See you all on Sunday!

June Meeting Reminder - TOMMORROW NIGHT!!

This is a reminder to everyone in the PDX Burner community (and beyond) that on Tuesday, June 17th the BWB Cascade Regional will host its monthly meeting at 7pm at the Watershed, 5040 SE Milwaukie in Portland. We will discuss our plans for monthly events this summer, including the worldwide BRING IT!!! campaign (see below). I’ll also be available to answer general questions about BWB activities and outings, including the Peru project. If there’s time, I may even show some pictures.

The folks at the Watershed will have their BBQ up and running, as usual. Their motto is, “If you bring it, you can cook it”. So don’t run to the drive-thru on your way to the meeting. Just come a little early and get your grub on while we meet.

***** BWB Presents: BRING IT!!! June 22

You are invited to participate in a worldwide event, BRING IT!!!. This is an opportunity for our community to come together and take care of a public space that could use some love - and have fun while doing it! This is the second year that BWB will support this event.

This year we’ll be bringing bags and brooms to the Eastside Esplanade and cleaning up an area that gets a lot of use by everyone, including Burner community members. If there is enough interest we could hold an urban BBQ under the bridge afterwards with some fire-play as well.

We’ll meet up at the Watershed for anyone who needs a ride or directions and head over around 10am. We’ll set up our base under the Hawthorne bridge. There is free parking nearby and plenty of mass-transit options for those who can’t come until later. We’ll also have people on hand to keep an eye on your bicycle and other personal belongings.

We’ll be looking for community support in the form of trash bags, wheelbarrows, utility trailers or pickup trucks, and of course, Burners to help fill them. And there is always a need for people to help with meals and other “indirect” support functions as well.

For details and to help organize, please join us tomorrow night!

***** Would you like to camp with BWB this year at Burning Man?

Camping with BWB is going to be amazing this year! We will most likely be at 3:30 and Esplanade and will be running daily salons along with our now famous lumber recycling project. Camp fees won't be more than $50. There are a lot of opportunities to participate in making this camp even more amazing than it was last year.

Please e-mail carmen@burnerswithoutborders.org right away if you think you will be camping with BWB and give her an idea of how much space you will need. Everyone who plans on coming will be subscribed to a BWB Camp Group email list so we can all organize it together. There's plenty of space for anyone who would like to join in making the camp a success.

****** BWB extends stay in Peru through August 16th. Join Us!
****** Cascade BWB Meeting – Tuesday June 17th
****** Participate in our local Bring It!!! Event - June 22.
****** Would you like to camp with BWB at Burning Man this year? Time sensitive-Please read below.

*****	BWB in Peru through August 16

Burners without Borders are excited to announce the extension of the Peru Reconstruction Program through August 16th. Come and volunteer with us! It feels great to gift our skills and creativity to those affected most by the devastating 8.0 earthquake.

We have welcomed 242 volunteers representing 31 countries and have gifted over 25,000 volunteer man-hours since last December. Our fundraising efforts and volunteer recruitment are really paying off. Thank You!

BWB volunteers just finished constructing a school, complete with colorful murals inside and out. And after the dedication, BWB hosted a burn for the local community. Check out the photos and what we're up to at our new Blog at http://blog.burnerswithoutborders.org/

Thank you to those who have contributed their time and/or hard-earned money to make our successes in Peru possible. If you aren't able to join us in person at this time, please consider making a donation so we can keep helping the people of Pisco. Having just returned from spending nearly 5 months working there, I can say from personal experience that your cash donations go directly to buy cement, not fancy office space. If you can spend some time working with us you will become part of a true Grass-Roots effort to help people who really need it.

You are invited to participate in a worldwide event, BRING IT!!!. This is an opportunity for our community to come together and take care of a public space that could use some love - and have fun while doing it!

This year we’re looking at a couple different sites including the Eastside Esplanade, Kelly Point Park and the beach at Sauvie Island. These are all sensitive areas that get a lot of use and would benefit from a little Burner-stylee luvin’. And each offers a great place for us to have some celebratory downtime afterwards! The final choice will be made June 5th so if you have an opinion, send it to me directly.

FANCY MOOPING EVENT SET! ala Public Mayhem

Hey all, I attended the Public Mayhem meeting to plan the Fancy Mooping event in April.
Check out the announcement on the Public Mayhem tribe:

http://tribes.tribe.net/publicmayhem/thread/0602f0b7-2861-4322-b20c-8ddaf1f76a08#be79ffa9-c5da-47d5-aad6-10701be8c219

At the meeting, it was thrown out there that perhaps identifying banners etc would somehow detract from the flash-mob mission. I had some thoughts regarding BWB unity at this event: perhaps a costume theme, along the lines of mini-garbage can tiaras, or pageant-style sashes? Of course, I also had thoughts about creating an Oscar-the-Grouch style Compost Creature out of one of those black plastic composting bins, but i don't know that i will actually make that happen. Hopefully, a ton of people will turn out for this event, and we will spread in small groups out from the central location... it would be nice if we could come up with some sort of unifying BWB theme with which to roam and create cleaning havoc with...

March Meeting at the Watershed

Calling all ye do-gooders for the next meeting of the Cascade Chapter of Burners Without Borders, Tuesday March 25th, 7:00 pm at Watershed, 5040 SE Milwaukie Avenue.

3/24/08

Hey everyone. Tomorrow night is Tuesday BBQ night at the Watershed and the BWB is having their monthly meeting at 7:00 PM. We had a good turn out last month and want to see you all again this month. Bring a friend, something to drink and something to through on the BBQ.

We had a successful, small, turnout today for our planned project of the month, mooping at Moopies. Thanks to Chance, Brogen, Margaret, Moopie, the General and two teenagers. We got a lot done, ate some good chili and corn bread (thanks to Moopie) and sent everyone home with new treasures. There's still a lot of work out there and we hope that you will all be able to come and assist in finishing up next Sunday, the 30th.

Tomorrow night we will be talking about finishing at Moopies and planning what we want to do for the month of April. As discussed last month, if we are doing alternating private projects and public projects that means April will be something in the public realm!

It has been noted that the Public Mayhem group is contemplating the notion of a formal-wear public clean up. I believe they will be meeting this Friday to discuss the possibilities and have the BWB on their radar as potential partners in play.

Other agenda items will be announced at tomorrows meeting.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Shed tomorrow night, 7:00 PM.

Well, everyone, 2008 is here.

To those who helped ring in the new year (and not to mention make my birthday so special) by volunteering in Vernonia, Thank You for all your help and support and energy and smiles.

I'll be leaving early tuesday morning (1/8) to work in Peru for 2 months. The BWB project in Pisco is picking up the baton from another group that is leaving, and we're hoping to keep the ball rolling and infuse some Burner Energy.

Until I get back in March, KK will try to organize a monthly meeting. Look for that to happen on a tuesday night at the Watershed.

As far as BWB-Cascade projects, I'd like to suggest that we turn our focus towards planning and brainstorming what we'd like to do in the coming months.

Some of the ideas I shared during the Vernonia field-trip were picking a park or neighborhood or busy street (Alberta?) to clean up. Another was that we could turn some of our energy inwards, towards our own community. Maybe we could spend a day helping out one of the people who volunteered with us, or support a large art project from someone in the PDX BM community.

I think it would be fun to allocate our efforts and energies to everyone, not just those stricken by disaster and certainly not just to people who know nothing about Burning Man. At the same time, let's stay focused on the BWB vision, which is helping those who truly need it. Whether that need is construction, clean-up, day-care, auto repair, welding an art project ... whatever.

So have fun while I'm off playing in rubble and debris. I'll try to post here when I can.

In Solidarity,

Wondering what to do with all that extra energy after Christmas? Consider joining Burners without Borders as we deliver some much-needed help and goodwill to the flood victims in our area.

Saturday and Sunday, 12/29 – 12/30, the local Cascade Regional chapter of Burners without Borders will hit the road and demonstrate the Gift Economy to the residents of Columbia County by helping them clean up and rebuild their communities. What better way to ring in the New Year than by spending the day with other Burners and helping those in need?

There will be an important informational meeting and rally Thursday, 12/27, from 7-9pm at The Watershed arts collective at 5040 SE Milwaukie Ave in Portland. Anyone planning to volunteer for either of the work parties should plan to attend this meeting. However, if you can’t make it to the meeting, you must check the posts on this tribe for details and a list of what you’ll need to bring.

We will all leave together from the Watershed promptly at 7:30am Saturday and Sunday and caravan to Vernonia. Car-pooling is vital so plan to arrive a little early if you can, especially if you have room in your vehicle. BWB will provide lunch, and we’ll finish work before sunset. Much of the work will be hard, wet and dirty. However, there are other opportunities including a need for some data entry workers and as BWB Galley Slaves. No matter what your interests and abilities are, we can find a place for you to contribute.

If you can’t work for a whole day, or if you miss the group departure, don’t worry. Just head out Hiway 26 to Vernonia and look for our BWB headquarters trailer near City Hall. Please check in with the BWB coordinators when you arrive so we can get you pointed in the right direction and help you with the process. We won’t know exactly where we’ll work until we arrive, so it’s best if we arrive together. As a last resort, call DragonFly! or anyone else you know who’s working with us if you happen to arrive later in the day.

In addition to our two days of volunteer efforts, BWB and the Watershed folks have teamed up to accept donations of food, cash, clothing, and other items which we’ll deliver to those in need. You can drop off your donations at the Watershed any time before Friday, 12/28. Please visit www.vernoniafloodinfo.blogspot.com/ for an updated list of donation items needed.
What to bring to the Vernonia work parties

The work in Vernonia and Mist will be cold, wet and dirty. Really dirty. And really, really wet. You will definitely want to change clothes before getting back in the car.

Everyone should come prepared with the following:

Extra clothes to change into after working
Extra shoes
2 extra pairs of socks (one to drive home in, and a spare)
Raingear
Work gloves (2 pairs are suggested)
Goggles (optional)
Painter's Masks (optional)
Heavy work shoes, boots
Warm coat
Signed insurance waiver

The last item is important. This waiver provides you with liability insurance in the event you injure someone else while working on a volunteer project. Make you sure you sign a waiver at the meeting on 12/27 or before starting work. Blank forms will be available at the volunteer site.

Dress in layers for optimal comfort and adaptability. Raingear is smart but can be hot to work in. Large plastic garbage bags also make great disposable outer layers. We'll have duct tape on hand to help you turn a garbage bag into a Costa Rican rain coat.

We're looking for someone in the community who can help us with t-shirts for volunteers, but that may not manifest before the 29th. So, we're asking everyone to bring and wear a black bandana as a sort of emblem and so we can identify burners on the street (as if that will be difficult).

There will be drinking water at the site so don't bother loading up a jug or filling your Camelback. It may be a good idea to bring a cup or mug and attach it to your gear like we do on the playa. You never know when a grateful resident will offer you something nice to drink.

Helping Get Cascade BWB Started

First and foremost we want to make our BWB events fun and enjoyable for everyone. Volunteering shouldn't mean suffering.

As we all know from living on the playa for weeks at a time, successful work comes from good planning and making resources available in a convenient way. In 2004 I created a mobile kitchen out of an old travel trailer and we've been feeding thousands of visitors to the Black Rock City International Spaceport ever since. And one of the keys to our success is that we store all our gear in the trailer and leave it packed up in Gerlach all year. Everybody chipped in a few old pots, pans, etc. and we never have to worry about that part of packing ever again.

We'd like to do something similar for BWB events.

The folks at the Toolshed project are loaning us their trailer to use as a mobile HQ for BWB events. We're asking the community to help us stock it with a few essentials we'll need to provide food, support and a warm dressing room at volunteer events. The following is a list of some of the things we think will help us get started. Remember that this is playa-style stuff, not commercial-grade. If you have a few things collecting dust in the garage, or if you can spend an extra $5 the next time you're at the thrift store, we'd appreciate your help and will sing songs in your honor.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cooking& Storage Gear:
4-5 medium frying pans
1 large pot
2 large mixing bowls
Spats and whisks
1 Large soup pot
Mixing and stirring utensils
Measuring cup
Cleanup Supplies:
Dishwashing tubs
Sponges
Towels
Dish-soap
Paper plates
Silverware
1 large garbage can
Bleach
5-gal Water jugs
2-3 Ice chests
General Support Stuff:
Rain shelter(?) (Costco barn?)
Clipboards
Large extension cords
Power strips
Folding Tables
Space Heater
Pens, pencils, sharpies
Duct tape
Tarps
Bungees
Rope
First-aid kit
Burn barrels
Firewood
Garden hose
Hose spray gun
Storage totes
Outdoor lighting (rope lights or xmas lites)
If you can donate any of these items, that's great. If you can loan them to the group for a day, that's great too. Anything helps.
December Update and Call to Arms!!
The Cascade BWB group is officially up and running - well, maybe not running yet but definitely up off the couch and exercising vigorously. And isn’t it fun to find a real opportunity to use ‘vigorously’ in a sentence!
Our initial meet-n-greet meeting took place on Sunday 12/9. Attendance was a strong indicator of the success of PDX Santacon. But those who came had fun and those who didn’t are likely still in Rehab and just haven’t been allowed to use the phones yet. And one member was so inspired that she may actually be on her way to volunteer in Peru right now!
We ate, drank and talked about what we want to do now and in the future. The general consensus was that we want to establish a regular series of monthly and quarterly events, with monthly meetings to plan and socialize.
In the immediate future, everyone’s attention is naturally aimed at the flood victims in our area.
I’ve set aside the weekend of 12/29 – 12/30 as tentative-but-actually-pretty-sure dates for a BWB field trip to either Vernonia or Mist to help the residents there clean up. I’ll be making a scouting trip to those towns on Saturday 12/22 to make contacts and get everything arranged. I would do it this weekend but I’m in Reno right now and the Rebel Fleet is out of transporter range, making a quick trip to the Coast Range all but impossible.
Please mark your calendar for Thursday 12/27 when I plan to hold a meeting for all those interested in the work parties. We’ll go over the details then, and tell everyone where to meet up sat/sun morning for carpooling and caravanning to the worksite in burner-stylee. I’ll announce the place and time of the meeting as soon as somebody here volunteers their house, studio, or workshop for that purpose. Operators are standing by.
If you can’t make it to the meetings or work parties but still want to help out, please consider making a cash or materials donation. Depending on the work we do, we may end up renting (or borrowing) utility trailers and/or hauling stuff to the dump and these things cost $$$. If you’re out of town and you can lend your truck or trailer to a friend that would be great too! But regardless of what we do, all monies collected will be routed 100% to the residents of these towns.
As always, feel free to contact me directly with questions or ideas.
Hasta Pronto!
The first meeting of the BWB Cascade Regional is this Sunday (12/9) at 1pm. Free Pizza for all who attend!
This is an open invitation to anyone wishing to learn more about how we, as Portland Burners, can work together to help others in need here in Oregon and beyond.
Quite a few members of this tribe are veterans of BWB's efforts in Katrina-stricken areas and elsewhere, and I know many people are looking for ways to help those affected by the recent flooding here at home. And we all know that the demographics of BRC show that Puddletown represents on the playa more than any other city except SFO. Let's take some of this skill, energy, and talent and see what we can do!
This will be a general, organizational meeting. The main focus will be gathering names and numbers and discussing what we might like to do to help our neighbors in the coastal areas. I will publish the results for those unable to attend.
Note to Santacon revelers: Don't worry if you can't make it out for free pizza. We understand there is a high probability that many Santas will spend Sunday herding brain cells back into their assigned seats. Good luck with that. If your efforts fail, or if you arise Sunday morning on an unfamiliar couch or park bench, or if your bail bondsman doesn't answer your urgent pre-dawn calls for cash, fear not. Cascade BWB will never discriminate on the basis of your arrest record or alleged ties to Elfin organizations. Just call or drop me a line whenever you can and we'll talk.
Details:
Sunday afternoon (12/9)
1-2:30pm
It’s a Beautiful Pizza (3342 SE Belmont)
Free Pizza for all who attend!
In Solidarity,
