Quick update:
Water is still high in some areas. Lots and lots of toxic, e-coli mud covers floods, carpets, stuff. Huge need for people to come help out. So far, ya'll have donated an absolutely jaw dropping $4100! This is just completely overwhelming, what an incredible gift. At a meeting in Fernley the mayor pointed out three groups of volunteers "The red cross, RSVP, and some burning man folks." And that's just w/two people in town--imagine what 30 could do!
At this point, we're asking for volunteers for a work weekend, this weekend, to come hit the job with as many hands as possible. With the break we got from the hotel, we can provide a place to sleep and three hot meals--if you can come work for a day, two, or more. We've also heard that not as many resources are going to be available for renters, so that's likely where we're going to focus attention.
Weather should be bad Thursday, and good from there on.
Interested? Email price_tom@hotmail.com.
another update tomorrow as warranted...again, thank you all so much. just overwhelming...

Re: Fernley flood--how you can help
Thu, January 10, 2008 - 7:53 PMHey everyone, time for your Thursday update:
Eli and Spoon spent another day in the mud, each helping several residents over the course of the day. Their advice: bring spare shoes--the mud's a mess! And don't skimp on the hand sanitizer.
Donations now near $5,000! Burning Man has given SF staff day off tomorrow if they want to go help, and is providing a van; contact blue@burningman.com if you'd like to see if space is still available, they'll be back Sunday night. Van also heading up from Sacramento, and word is many of the Reno/Tahoe burners will be joining in as well
Plan is to join other volunteer groups in big push on Saturday, then continue Sunday as well. Housing/meals remain available for anyone interested; contact Tom Price for details. Thanks so much for your support! -

Bill Clinton and BWB
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 2:26 PMBill Clinton was in Fernley yesterday, and after borrowing a pair of boots from Spoon to tour the flood area, paused for a photo with the BWB volunteers.
Check it out here:

Volunteers will be in the area working at least through this time next week, if you'd like to join them. -

Re: Bill Clinton and BWB
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 9:57 PMActually he didn't where any body's boots but his own. they were red Ostrich cowboy boots. Quite nice if you are into that sort of thing. Austin checked them out and told him they were bad ass or something like that and he responded with something. Ask Austin about it she'll tell you. -

One last push!
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 11:14 AM
Hey folks-
It's been almost two weeks since the flood in Fernley, Nevada, and our community's response has been nothing short of incredible.
In less than a week, we raised over $6,000 to help the victims, and several BWB volunteers have been there the whole time helping clean up and clean out.
Last weekend's work weekend was a great success--lots of good solid dirty work done, capped by a surprise visit from President Bill Clinton, when he posed with the crew for photos; see them , read a newspaper story about the work we've done, and hear about what we've been up to here:
www.burnerswithoutborders.org/glo...reak
The folks who've been there full time--Spoon, Eli, and Matt--need to get moving on to other things next week, but we're seeing if we can't squeeze out one more good weekend of work!
So, if you can, please get on up to Fernley this weekend, even if it's only for a couple hours. If you're not from the area, we have the ability to provide a hotel room for all volunteers ( thanks to the donations, and a great break on rates from the Truck Inn). And we can provide meals and gas money if needed for folks coming to help out. All the money that remains after this weekend will be distributed to people in need, in consultation with other aid agencies and the office of the Mayor of Fernley.
What to expect: Weather this weekend should be clear, and around 40 for a high. Bring shoes you don't mind getting dirty, and spare to wear afterwards. Gloves are also a plus. Eli, Matt, and Spoon will help you find a place to pitch in, and make sure you've got the tools you need to make a difference. The only thing you really need to do is show up and be willing to help out!
Do you need a ride? Email price_tom@hotmail.com
Got a ride you're willing to offer? Email Tom, and let him know when you'll leave/return, and from where.
Thanks again for all you've done!

Re: One last push!
Fri, January 25, 2008 - 4:37 PMI want to personally thank BWB. I had the opportunity to meet many of you on the day President Clinton visited Fernley. Your hard work and enthusiasm to help our community is commendable! I am Dee Dee Cutler, my husband Todd Cutler is the Mayor of Fernley. We love this community! We will not stop until every home and every citizen is back to normal. We are so proud of all the support and compassion we have received from outside this community and especially from the citizens within our community. This city has shown what teamwork and compassion to mankind can accomplish. Fernley is United! Thanks again BWB!! -

Final Update
Tue, February 26, 2008 - 1:34 PMThis is what will likely be the last update on our community's response to the flood in Fernley on January 4th, as we've just spent the last of our donated money.
Yesterday, we spent the last of the almost $7,000 that was donated. We used it to purchase 429 sheets of drywall, which will be distributed starting next Tuesday to homeowners still working to rebuild. It worked out to $7.10 per 4x12 sheet, a significant savings over the $12 price. Thanks to volunteer Ron Bell, who negotiated that great price, and Ponderosa Wholesale of Sparks, for offering it!
And thanks also to all the volunteers who spent time helping clean out and muck out after the flood. There's a small Flickr set of images from the last few days Eli and Spoon were there located here: flickr.com/photos/68943...603870413595/ As you can see from the images, all the drywall in affected homes has needed to be torn out, so it all needs to be replaced. And thanks to you, that's exactly what we're doing.
So, to everyone who donated time, money, or support to help Fernley, a heartfelt thank you!
