In the south of France, black cats are referred to as matagots, or "magician cats". According to local superstition, they bring good luck to owners who feed them well and treat them with the respect they deserve.
Black cats were once treated like royalty in the homes of English sailors, who believed that keeping them happy would ensure fair weather when they went to sea. They became so high-priced that few sailors could afford to keep them.

Re: Black Cat Lore
Wed, December 27, 2006 - 3:13 PMIt seems there was a kind of yin and yang effect going on with black cat lore back in the day. That superstition about a black cat crossing your path is a truncated remnant of the seafaring feline lore--if a black cat on shipboard approached a sailor and came up to him, it was good luck, but if the cat came part way then turned around again, it was bad luck. On shore, if a black cat ran ahead of a sailor all the way to the pier, good luck! But if the kitty crossed his path, it was very bad! -

Re: Black Cat Lore
Thu, December 28, 2006 - 8:27 AMNo wonder I love Black Cats!!!!!! My ppl were whalerandsailors....and that is the first time I heard the stories of Black Cats being lucky. Thanx
One story I heard from Persian friends was when a black cat crossed your path if you threw money out a window it would remedy any negativity. If you believe in such negativity.
I think they look so cool how you can hardly see their features and their glowy eyes in the dark probably freaks ppl out. Heck the cats don't know their black...all my cats treat each other the exact same.

Re: Black Cat Lore
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 11:23 PMIf you have a stye in your eye, the tail of a (LIVING!!!) black cat was alleged to have the power to cure it.
You'd brush the cat's tail over the stye and say 3 times,
"I poke thee; I don't poke thee.
I toke at the queff that's under the ee.
O qualyway; o qualyway."
