SJSU Pros n Cons

What do you guys think of SJSU? Quality of education, cooperation of faculty/staff?

Personally, I was quite happy with the actual undergrad courses, Books, Classes etc. Outside of the lecture, I found very little support or even cooperation. That made the education process difficult, but it taught me to force the issue when necessary. I've since moved on to UCB, and I've noticed that I'm one of the more assertive students. Another UCB student recently completed his undergrad work at Stanford. They really held his hand, and he wasn't used to having to fend for himself. for me, the UCB administrative BS has been a walk in the park. I'm used to sparring with the SJSU folks.

Pros, Cons?

  • Hey Michael,

I thought that the quality of education in SJSU was quite impressive and very underrated. I was an advertising and marketing major and felt that I was challenged in most of my classes. The faculty during my time were great, some were tough & most were still working professionals (within their field) which I think is a big benefit for the students - this way students get a feel for the current job practices.

I once attended a advertising seminar/workshop in Stanford in 2000 and found out that I was getting the same education (if not more) than their students (minus the outstanding student loans). The only thing is separated us Spartans from them is their "brand name" diploma.

My only Con would of been better dorms and newer buildings. But It seems that SJSU has developed a new state of the art living space & library.

    • That's a good point. It really depends on what department / timeframe you're a student. As an undergrad, the Mech Engineering department had a number of outstanding professors with excellent reputations in the community. When I was a senior, there was a big feud in the department, and several of the best profs. left. Returning as a grad student, the department had clearly suffered from the loss and internal conflict.

Additionally, a number of the students are working professionals and can contribute tremendously to the classes.
  • I will agree that it varies some from dept to dept. I was in Dance and Drama depts. World renowned dance teachers taught class in newley remodeled studios--lush spaces to die for. But when it came to drama--UGH! Damp, dank labs--the theater at SJSU needed to be remodled and updated. Profs that were experts in their fields but did not know how to TEACH, so we had to learn by the seat of our pants.
  • SJSU is harder than UCB. The students at Cal brag about how much they can deal with bureacracy. I guess Cal was like training wheels, because when I came to SJSU I was able to handle it. SJSU is probably less customer friendly now. Everything has to be done on the computer. But I've always felt it had good faculty--much better than UCB. And good classes. And if you get involved on campus and go to football games with a group it is well worth it. We have the best marching band according to Sac. State, at least.
    • My faculty was great. The Administration is what sucks. They are inflexible, and extremely particular about everything to the point of pettiness. I would not mind that so much if they were competent, and took responsibility for their mistakes (like losing an application). It is almost as if they view students as the enemies in many ways. I think that's why all of my teachers called the the DMV.
