All-

I finally saw Lost in Translation last night and there was a scene where they caused trouble in a bar and the bartender started shooting at them with some sort of light gun. Does anyone know what that was all about?

NOVA teaching

(I'm posting the brief summary of why I chose the particular teching program I'm using, which I wrote for Moira, for anyone else who's considering it.)

Sorry -- I've been offline for a few days. Anyway, I can offer some mixed advice: I'm going with a group called NOVA, essentially a language-teacher franchise organization. It pays well -- at least by recent-college-humanities-graduate standards -- you can work for a year (which I like), and they have a specialized multimedia program that I'm getting involved in. However, they often get very mixed reviews -- they're a huge institution, a business, not a school, and they provide almost no orientation and training. They give you your visa and let you loose in the conversation-mill. For me, this is fine; I thrive best in monolithic organizations where I can improvise and find my own way, and my Japanese friends have given me endless prep for the culture and some of the language. But people who need a little more structure have come out very unhappy.

The JET program, which is run by the Japanese gov't, is the royal road to teaching in Japan, but they hire once a year and have much more stringent admissions process. (This year's date has passed already.) GEOS and AEON are both smaller versions of NOVA, with their own pluses and minuses. NOVA's website: www.teachinjapan.com (yes, they bought it first). As far as I can tell, they may be the fastest way to get out of the country and totally lost in Roppongi.

After a certain point, it's all a gamble -- people have got into the best organization, but with the worst supervisiors and circumstances, and been miserable; and vice-versa, and had a wonderful time.

With the proliferation of weblogs, it's possible to get an understanding of what a lot of people teaching in Japan are doing, and how they feel about it.

Hello!
I am planning a trip to Japan this summer (July) and I'm looking for places to stay. I'm planning on perusing Tokyo first, and then moving my way around if I have the means to do so.
I'm excited to experience art, anime, egl awesomeness, rad parties (with some dubstep, jungle, dancehall/reggae, dub, psychedelic, booty bass, breaks, etc.), engrish, food, and much, much more.

If any of you have been to Japan, or are in Japan, or whatnot, and can provide some suggestions, that would be awesome
I would prefer places to stay that are safe, friendly, quiet, clean, non-smoking, and affordable, as I am working on a budget.

Thanks so much for your help!

^_^
Methylone

apparently methylone is readily available in the Far East, especially Japan, China, etc. anybody know of a reliable wholesaler for this magical chemical? although I am blessed to have a supplier in Canada, I would like to see if my friends in the Far East know of a reputable supplier that sells wholesale. Methylone, in my humble opinion, has the potential to be be just as powerful as mdma in psychotherapy and self exploration. Cheers

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:
Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):
Remember when I wandered
through cloudless desert
like motherless child
looking for the mirage
that mirrored my dreams
when no thirst could quench
the never-ending drought.

You found me then
and took me in
with heart and soul
when it was everything I needed.

So, when you need me most,
just close your eyes
and go to that special place
that just we two know about...
for I am there.

Always there.

And for you,
it will be
as if I had never left.

There is need to create a crew to fight a battle for the defense of our dolphin kin. A nasty situation is about to occur in Japan and we needs to create a pi-rate team to mastermind a global strategy. This needs to happen asap.
okay I know the roomaji is cheesy, but I can not resist.
I am new to this tribe. So, hello!!
I am a student on a tight tight budget but would very much like to go to japan for a week, two weeks, a month...
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to how I can do that with limited cash allowance...
thank you!

Konnichiwa mina-san,

I just found out that I was accepted to do an internship at an architectural office in Tokyo and I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea on monthly expenses in Tokyo. I know this can vary WIDELY but I am just trying to get an idea for a very small apt, daily train costs, food...etc...again - just ballpark figures are great...

I was in Japan in January (hajimete deshita) and I am excited to return. I hope this intership leads to a job, but you never know. At least I bet it might be fun, ne?

Any help is really appreciated from this Philadelphia gaijiin....

Doomo!

As spring begins, it starts to become more interesting to travel around Japan. Back in the 70s I spent several years doing mainly that, travelling the country on a motorcycle, armed with camera and a desire to find the Japan that had developed in my imagination from literature and old Japanese art. One series I did was an attempt to create photographs with something of the character of haiku. Here's a gallery of a few of them:

3d animator looking for gig in Japan - advice

I am going to be going to live in Japan after my girlfriend (who is from there) and I get married. I have basic Japanese language ability and have visted there once with her. I have been looking for jobs and the only things I see on Gaijin Pot or Jobs in Japan are mostly teaching jobs. I have interviews scheduled with Nova and Aeon, but I'd really rather do what I do here, if possible, which it 3D animation for TV. Not being fluent in nihongo will hurt my chances, I know. If its not possible, then I guess I can freelance once I am there.

Q;Should I take one of these jobs (I dont really need their visa since I will have a spouse visa) or just wait til I get there and scope it out.. Not sure what to do..any advice anyone?? Resources? Is teaching realistically the only thing for gaijin there? Oh, and my degree is in arts and architecture and I can also do CAD drafting.....

Teaching Art in Japan

Wonder if there are groups that support (b)gaijin teaching other subjects,in English, in Japan? Odd concept; would like to participate if such a program exists. Much of my milieu borrowed from that culture to start with (see example of art). Would be kind of funny for an American to teach Japanese how to paint Edo period ukiyo-e style.Probably no weirder than the summer I hawked/ demonstrated cooking frozen shu mai for Ajinomoto Corp. in Japanese markets in the US, speaking English and Japanese. Very limited, fractured Japanese...

A friend of mine would like to move to Japan to study Buddhism. She's a philosophy major. She would like to teach English over there to support herself. Anyone know where she should research studying Buddhism and/or teaching English in Japan? Thanks!
