The Broom is intimatly connected with witches and witchcraft. It was a commonly believed that witches anointed their bodes with a slave given to them by the devil that enabled them to fly through the air upon a variety of sticks and stems, including broomsticks. The choice of the broom or besom as a likely means of transport is probably dew to teh association between brooms and female domesticity, though male witches were thought to ride in this way as well as women. In eastern europen folklore a broom maybe usaed in a exorcism ceremonies to sweep evil spirits out the door. It is also thoguth that stepping over a broomstick. lpacing it under your pillow or putting a broom across a threshold will offer protection against evil spirits and ghosts at night.

Re: Broom
Sat, January 17, 2009 - 7:28 PMI always forget that there are christian pagans. So weird to me. I am not sure if you are but the mention of the devil, evil and exorcism has nothing to do with my pagan path and is an artifact of christianity, in my eyes. Not like this matters, just throwing my reaction out there.
On a more helpful note: I do feel a broom can be an excelent focus to help clear unwanted spirits out of an area. -

Re: Broom
Sun, January 18, 2009 - 3:33 AMI actually read her post as more of a historical view of the history of the broom, for her historical data was accurate. Doesn't mean the historians were right on the actual uses of the broom. But if you look up the history, you will find those same terms over and over again.
Just saying.

Re: Broom
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 3:27 PMI know that the broom is connected more recently with Wicca and Witchcraft, however; the "flying" through the chimney with the use of ointments is linked to the shamanic journey. Witchcraft in its older forms has much in common with shamanic practices and in fact I teach that witchcraft is European Shamanism. Anyway, there is evidence that witches used psychotropic drugs and toxins such as Belladonna to induce a trance like state and "fly" or experience the shamanic journey and travel to many different realms. A practice kin to what many mystics around the world participate in. OF course in order to demonize these indigenous practices one could say that the herbs and salve is the fat of children given to the witch by the devil for her to do terrible things.... sigh.....
