I'm 50 years old and I would like to change careers. I would like something that I can learn, work and retire independantly wealthy in five years. I'll settle for a job in IT. I have played around with computers for 10 or 12 years, built several boxes and set up a few home networks. I have used mostly MS operating systems but have an intermidiate knowledge of Linux. I have excellent people skills as well. Where should I start?
I posted this on another Tribe as well, but you guys seem really, really smart.

Re: Career Advise
Thu, September 21, 2006 - 11:45 PM1st. You need to decide which of the numerous IT specialties you wish to pursue. Take your time & do your research as there are many to choose from.
2nd. Do you have any vendor-centric or vendor-neutral certs under your belt? If not, study & obtain some from each category.
3rd. If you do not have any formal work experience in the field you choose, start working with non-profit orgnizations to get your feet wet & your resume polulated along with client referals.
4th. If you wish to do contract work, brush up in your soft & business comunication skills as they are now an essential element of today's IT workforce (specially for consultants).
There is a lot more I can include but I need to get back to writing a school paper due tomorrow.
Ciao,
