career question

I'm not sure if search engine marketing counts as High Tech career but I can't find a career / jobs tribe and I would really like to get some opinions / 2 cents

This is the short version :o

I've been working for a company doing search engine blogging using SEM methods. I hate living in Los Angeles and love living in Austin, Texas.

Austin TX jobs are not great. I would have to take at least a $5 per hour pay cut just to find a job and back into Admin if I wanted to stay here.

I'm creating a letter to my current company in hopes of convincing them to allow me to let me stay working virtual – however I highly doubt the owner will say yes. However even if they do... my career with this job is at a dead end or seems like it. I'm contastantly left out of the loop in my own projects.

I've received some promising interest in anther state that is a lot colder than Austin but the cost of living is almost as high as Los Angeles.

So do I

a) take a shitty job and try to go back to school and wait it out (the pay cut would really hurt financially)

b) Go back to my home town of Seattle where I could probably (no one has offered yet) find a job and be happy but colder but probably push my career ahead

any 2 cents?

Portable Employer of Record services are an alternative to self incorporation

Contractor? Are you working as a 1099? Or as an S-Corp? Having a hard time finding a real full time job in the world of tech?

Here's an interesting wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Employer_of_Record

"Portable Employer of Record" services are an attractive alternative to Self Incorporation or being a 1099 for independent consultants . . . explore your options and do your research. Lots of options exist.

Anyone here on a 1099 or operating as an S-Corp? Has anyone else here heard of PERs (Portable Employers of Record)? Or do you work through a staffing vendor?

More and more companies are reluctant to put you on a W-2 . . . so learn all your options.

How do you work? Able to find enough full time jobs? Confused about going on a 1099 and what your responsibilities are?

Career Opportunities LIVE via TalkShoe

There's a new place for LIVE talk shows on the net and after seeing the success of a fellow Friends in Tech Member, Victor Cajiao of the Typical Mac User podcast, I figured I would try it.

So, now you can join me for the next edition of Career Opportunities LIVE! on:
Friday, December 15, 2006 at 6 PM Pacific Standard Time.

Join the conversation at http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/7338

RSVP

If you plan on joining us, please RSVP to career@welchwrite.com. This isn't required, but it will give me an idea of the number of folks I can expect.

You can participate several way:

Listen Live directly from the web site

This requires nothing but your web browser. Visit the show link (http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/7338) and click the Listen Only link. You'll hear the live stream of the show, as it happens.

Chat and Listen LIVE using the Free TalkShoe client

Visit http://talkshoe.com/ and create your FREE TalkShoe account and register your own unique PIN number (usually your telephone number)

Download the FREE TalkShow client software (http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/Downloads.jsp) and install it on your Windows or Mac OS X computer.

Set this up today, and perhaps try it out with another TalkShoe show, so you are ready for the Career Opportunities show when it happens.

Next, visit the episode link (http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/7338) and click the Listen, Text or Talk LIVE! button. This will automatically start the TalkShoe software, connect you to the show's chat room and start the LIVE audio Stream. Everyone can see what you type.

Chat, Listen Live and participate using any telephone

Take your experience to the next level by calling the TalkShoe switchboard ((724) 444-7444) and entering the Talkcast ID # and your PIN. Now you can talk to the host and other listeners.

You can also use popular Voice over IP software like Skype and Gizmo to make your call for FREE. Simply use the phone number, Talkcast ID and PIN listed above.

Drop me a line at career@welchwrite.com if you have any questions or issues with setting up your TalkShoe account.

Opportunities and demands on your time

There seem to be a few opportunities where companies will hire you to work with or support technology locally, but only for relatively low pay. The greater opportunities are in consulting on technology and helping a company leverage it to their advantage. Let's face it, there seem to be more gadgets available than anyone could learn to use comfortably.

I can have my phone calls forwarded to my cell, and my cell trigger a page to my pager if I've left it alone somewhere, but how often will I do this?

I was watching a television show with my wife two nights ago with a couple who each had two college degrees (one of which was Law for each) and they were working 16 hours a day, 6 days a week. Who wants that? Do they think this will "pay off" eventually and they will be able to retire early? I think neither of them will ever be able to relinquish control of their respective ventures to anyone else and they will be working until they die. Personally I don't want that kind of career. The same show featured a father telling his rock wall climbing two year old to "hold on" while he answered a message on his Blackberry... Give me a break! Where is the greater responsibility? The Blackberry or the (very fragile) two year old? I shouldn't even have to ask this question and that father should be flogged for ignoring the safety of his child!

The purpose of technology and high tech careers should not be to separate us from life. It should help us exploit the time we have here on Earth to our advantage, to allow us to accomplish more, or to allow us to continuously "work smarter, not harder" in order to achieve freedom over our schedules.

Has technology helped or hindered you? Do you have more or less freedom than 2 years ago? (or two jobs ago...)

I'm 50 years old and I would like to change careers. I would like something that I can learn, work and retire independantly wealthy in five years. I'll settle for a job in IT. I have played around with computers for 10 or 12 years, built several boxes and set up a few home networks. I have used mostly MS operating systems but have an intermidiate knowledge of Linux. I have excellent people skills as well. Where should I start?

I posted this on another Tribe as well, but you guys seem really, really smart.

Everything, it seems, will soon be computerized in some fashion. Everyday appliances like your refrigerator and oven already contain microprocessors and I recently saw a pair of shoes that contained a small computer to allow kids to see how fast they run and how high they jump. Soon, these embedded systems will become a deeper part of our lives than ever before. Not only that, they will begin talking to each other. All this computerization begs the question, "Are we, as computer professionals, capable of writing software and building hardware that is good enough to become part of people's lives in ever more intimate ways?
Training suggestions

Hello - I work in HW/SW technical support for a large consulting firm and I am looking at either moving over into consulting here or moving into a Sales Engineer role at a smaller company. I would prefer to be client-facing rather than coding behind the scenes, but want to ensure that I have a good grasp of relevant technical knowledge.

My background consists of sales and marketing, field engineering, and some web development in addition to tech support. I'm looking to pursue some training in order to get some programming background and to strengthen my Web tech knowledge, which is mostly HTML/CSS/JavaScript-based.

I'm considering the following and am wondering if those out there can recommend training that might provide some good background for these types of jobs. Also if you know of any great training facilities in or around San Francisco please let me know.

Thoughts I've had are ASP.NET, .NET, Java, XML, VBScript, C#, C++, JSP

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Usability/User experience

I wanted to get some feedback from web designers/producers/etc....

1. Do you work alone? With a small group? Within a company?
2. Do you consider usability/user experience when designing sites?
3. Do you feel you possess the right skills to make choices concerning usability/user experience?
4. Have you ever sought someone with those specific skills?

The reason I'm asking is that I want to become a usability consultant. I've been reading a lot about website marketing, etc. and want to hear from folks who would be potential clients about what they think and what they might look for.

I'm not asking for a critique of a website or anything like that, just your thoughts on those skills, if you would find them useful, and how you would go about finding/buying those skills.

Thanks!
Ron

I have worked outside of the High Tech field for a couple of years now. I want to restart my career, but I feel a little embarrassed about the work that I have been doing. I have been working in a night club for a while now. At the club I have worked in many capacities there. At the monent I don't put it down on my resume. I think that it might be irrelavent. I am wondering if I should try to leverage some of the soft skills that I have worked on at the club: customer relations, conflict resolution, etc... I am worried that it might also give employers the wrong idea. What do you think I should do?

Ok. I do know what PLC stands for (thanks to Everything2.com) but I am interested in what I have in store for me as I have just been retained as a PLC programmer.

I have extensive experience with .net and some Legacy languages but am I going to have to crack the books for a totally new set of syntax and logic?
Endangered species: US programmers

http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/1014/p17s01-coop.html

\Although computer-related jobs in the United States increased by 27,000 between 2001 and 2003, about 180,000 new foreign H-1B workers in the computer area entered the nation, calculates John Miano, an expert with the Programmers Guild, a professional society. "This suggests any gain of jobs have been taken by H-1B workers," he says.

H-1B visas allow skilled foreigners to live and work in the US for up to six years. Many are able to get green cards in a first step to citizenship. Another visa, L-1, allows multinational companies to transfer workers from foreign operations into the US.

The H-1B visa has been highly controversial for years. This fiscal year, Congress set a quota of 65,000 visas, which was snapped up immediately after they became available Oct.1. Now, US business is pleading for Congress to let in more such workers.

The US Chamber of Commerce, for instance, wants Congress to revisit the cap "to ensure American business has access to the talent it needs to help keep our economy strong."

That rationale makes no sense to the Programmers Guild and other groups that have sprung up to resist the tech visas. Since more than 100,000 American programmers are unemployed - and many more are underemployed - the existing 65,000 quota is inexcusably high, they argue. H-1B and L-1 visas are "American worker replacement programs," says the National Hire American Citizens Society.

Further, the H-1B program, set up in 1990, is flawed, critics charge. For example, employers are not required to recruit Americans before resorting to hiring H-1Bs, says Norman Matloff, a computer science professor at the University of California, Davis.

And the requirement that employers pay H-1Bs a "prevailing wage" is useless, he adds, because the law is riddled with loopholes. Nor are even any remaining regulations enforced.

The average wage for an American programmer runs about $60,000, says John Bauman, who set up the Organization for the Rights of American Workers. Employers pay H-1Bs an average $53,000

CHARLES DICKENS himself would shudder, I should think, were he to see the way young adults are put to work in one semimodern corner of our economy. Gas lamps are long gone, and the air is free of soot. But you can't look at a place like Electronic Arts, the world's largest developer of entertainment software, and not think back to the early industrial age when a youthful work force was kept fully occupied during all waking hours to enrich a few elders.

I have been out of work for a while as a developer (way over a year). I know that I am not alone in this and there are many more of you out there w/ similar problems. How do you deal w/ the question, "What have you been doing all this time?" I mean after I was laid off I experimented with other things, taught myself new tech skills andaugmented old ones and attend local technical user groups in NYC. Furthermore I am attending technical classes right now in order to become more marketable (webserv/unix/oracle). The big question is what do I really have to do to ensure to employers that I am a worthy prospect?

Making a career transition. . .

I saw in a previous post someone mentioned changing from the tech design side to the tech sales side.

In a roundabout way I'm trying to make a transition too (aerospace to emerging technology field, engineering to business/marketing/sales side).

For those of you that have been able to pull it off, what things allowed you to make a successfull career transition?

I'm finding it a difficult sell, mainly because of the lack of wit of the non-technical folk (Umm, trust me, its not rocket science, I've already done that . . . focus people!). Obviously, if the job market were more fluid, it would be easier, but in the meantime, I'm dying to find work I'm more interested in . . .

What is everyone's thoughts ???

Are all recruiters idiots? Or only some of them?

During the past several months of job searching I've found that a portion of the recruiters I talk are more of a hinderance than a help.

First of all, they rarely understand the details of the position they're trying to fill. I can't tell you how many times I've had a phone interview (more like a screening I guess) with a recruiter who says, "I'm not technical at all! But I have to ask you these questions..." And it's clear that they have no idea what I'm talking about. They're just mindless taking notes, trying to find someone to fill an interview slot. Maybe if they put the recruit first, before dreaming of their commission, they'd actually be helping everyone involved.

Second, what ever happened to follow-up? What's happened to simple consideration? How about a call back telling me the job has been filled? Or an email? But in most cases they give nothing. Not a peep.

So, if there are any recruiters reading this out there- get with the program. Do your homework. Take the time to understand the specifics of the job you're trying to recruit for. And after the first phone call (when you sound like my best friend [or at least sound like you're going to make a commission off of me]) do the right thing and keep me posted- call or even email.

Is anyone else out there outraged?

Hi-
I'm currently looking for employment. My background is usability/IA.
I check monster.com, and my favorite HCI site, www.hcirn.com.

Are there any other job posting sites you use? Which do you like the best, etc?

Thanks!

HD DVDs

I was watching some DVDs at my parents house who recently purchased an HDTV. Right now, we have a standard DVD player with progressive scan and connected with component cables. The quality of the DVDs are nice, but they aren't as 'breath-taking' as HDTV companies claim they will be.

And since it's probably going to be another year or so before Hollywood starts producing their movies onto HD-DVDs (or Blu-ray..whoever wins that format war), I was wondering that in the meantime, if its worth buying one of the few current DVD players (such as the Zenith DVB318 1080i Progressive-Scan DVD Player or the Samsung DVD-HD841 HDTV DVD player) that has an upconverter that brings the 480 resolution to 1080? I know that these players don't produce a "true" HD picture, but they must be a lot better than what I'm currently seeing, right? Has anyone seen the quality or can provide me with more info so I can decide whether its worth buying or waiting?

'High-tech employment numbers drop in second quarter'
http://www.nwfusion.com/news/2004/0726highemplo.html?fsrc=rss-outsourcing

The number of U.S. workers employed in four IT-related occupations has dropped between the first and second quarters of 2004, according to numbers culled from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The IEEE-USA blamed the drop in employed software engineers, programmers, hardware engineers and computer scientists and systems analysts on the continuing trend for U.S. companies to send jobs overseas, often called offshore outsourcing. The number of employed workers in those fields also seem to contradict the unemployment numbers that the BLS has released, which show a dip in the unemployment rates in those fields.

I am an experienced Programmer/Programmer-Analyst looking for work. Strong preference for remaining in the Omaha, Nebraska/Council Bluffs, Iowa area, but I might consider relocation for the right offer. A brief description of my skill set follows. Complete resume will be made available to the right parties. Serious replies only please—and no MLM.

9 years of IT experience. Strong mainframe programming skills including COBOL, Assembler, CICS, DB2, MVS JCL, CA-IDEAL, and IMS. I also know some Visual Basic. Expert trouble-shooter. Experience with system design.

New legislation taking effect later this year is triggering a wave of technology spending as banks take further steps toward an all-digital future.

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, passed by Congress last year and set to go into effect Oct. 28, allows banks to substitute electronic images of cancelled checks for the actual pieces of paper. The legislation is regarded as an important landmark on the road to eliminating paper in favor of fully electronic transactions.

July 16, 2004

Each new season brings a new initiative here to the Career-Op offices. Summer takes us away from the beautiful outdoors – at least for a little while – and into the wild and wooly world of statistics. Perhaps it was the act of helping my wife with the statistics for her Master’s thesis, but I got a sudden urge to know a little bit more about my clients. There is career gold to be mined in those hills of data, but only if they spur you to new projects and the betterment of your career.
In 1999 the entrepreneurs behind a photo hosting company named Webshots sold their company to Excite@Home for $82.5 million. Not bad. Even better, though, was that a few years later, after Excite@Home went bankrupt, the founders bought Webshots back at an $80 million discount, paying just $2.4 million. That was pretty smart of them... because now, two years later, they've flipped the company again, this time to CNET, for $70 million, $60 million of which is in cold hard cash (they've obviously learned the value). You have to wonder if this agreement has a buy back option as well. While most news stories focusing on the deal are compa

Career-Op: Training your replacement

by Douglas E. Welch, ComputorEdge Magazine

Outsourcing has been much in the news lately. Along with this trend another, more disturbing, one has emerged…companies asking employees to train their own replacements. In the professional equivalent of “digging your own grave,” companies are threatening to withhold severance pay or eligibility for unemployment unless their current (soon to be former) employees transfer their knowledge. I find this to be one of the most repugnant policies I have ever seen. Any company that will do this to their employees deserves to go as bankrupt financially as they are morally. If you are ever faced with such a choice, here are some guidelines to help you through the ugliness.

Bullying Boss

"Fear in the Workplace: The Bullying Boss"
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/22/health/psychology/22bull.html?ex=1403236800&en=ca26eb069980a4ef&ei=5007&partner=USERLAND

Researchers have long been interested in the bullies of the playground, exploring what drives them and what effects they have on their victims. Only recently have investigators turned their attention to the bullies of the workplace.

Around the country, psychologists who study the dynamics of groups and organizations are discovering why cruel bosses thrive, how employees end up covering for managers they despise and under what conditions workers are most likely to confront and expose a bullying boss.

Next week, researchers and policy makers from many nations will convene in Bergen, Norway, to discuss the issue.

"What we're finding," said Dr. Calvin Morrill of the University of California at Irvine, who studies corporate culture, "is that some of the behaviors that we think most protect us are what in fact allow the behavior to continue. Workers become desensitized, tacitly complicit and don't always act rationally."

Bullying bosses, studies find, differ in significant ways from the Blutos of childhood. In the schoolyard, particularly among elementary school boys, bullies tend to pick on smaller or weaker children, often to assert control in an uncertain social environment in which they feel vulnerable.

But adult bullies in positions of power are already dominant, and they are just as likely to pick on a strong subordinate as a weak one, said Dr. Gary Namie, director of the Workplace Bullying and Trauma Institute, an advocacy group based in Bellingham, Wash. Women, Dr. Namie said, are at least as likely as men to be the aggressors, and they are more likely to be targets.

Interesting idea about creating communal work spaces for officeless workers. Work with people you like! What a concept.

'We’ve talked plenty about the drawbacks of working at home — distractions, isolation, over working — as reason to seek alternatives. But I’m not convinced they outweigh the benefits — namely the flexibility and the ability to deal with the world on your own terms for the most part.

But now, entrepreneurs are creating “third places” to work that take what you like best about working at home and combine it with what you like best about working in the office. '

“Yes — but these offices are better,” I said. “Here, you don’t have to work with the people you work with. You get to work with the people you like.”

I'm not sure if any of you were fans of TechTV, but just in case, I wanted to let you know about this. We just started a group about 3 weeks ago over there at yahoo called Long Live TechTV. Tons of resources, downloads, files and links.

If you need help with your computer, OR if you can help people with theirs, there's lots of activity going on the board. Almost 700 people have joined in just the last 3 weeks and that place is jamming with activity. Even if you weren't a TechTV fan, you'll like this place just for the resources. Just thought I'd throw it up here in case anyone's interested.

Long Live TechTV: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Long_Live_TechTV/

Thanks,

I received this email from a friend and former coworker:

This was so good I just had to share this one.

I think this qualifies as an instant classic.

I was talking to a tech support rep at Diversified Software this afternoon, on an open issue we have with them. Diviersified Software is the company that has Jobscan, for validating jcl.

She was telling me we should go to their newer product - Pro JCL, since it does what our open issue is about, and also because (I swear this is what she had to say!)

She was telling me the other reason we should quit using Jobscan, and go to Pro JCL, is because Pro JCL is written in an "ORIENTAL ORIENTED PROGRAMMING" language!

Yes, we all know what she meant to say, and she corrected herself after a couple tries, but she had already introduced the above new classic! Is that great or what?

This just made my week, I thought it was so funny, and I just had to share this one!
Douglas E. Welch

If you are working as an independent high-tech consultant, there may come a time when, due to financial pressures or personal preference, you need to “return to the fold” of a classic corporate job. While the reasons for your return might be varied, there are a few ways to insure that your return is as painless and productive as possible. In your time away, you have surely expanded your education and experience. Both of these can be instrumental in easing your re-entry back into the corporate world. What will hinder you is that nagging feeling of having failed at going it alone.

Career-Op: The Rules

Career-Op: The Rules
May 14, 2004

As I move through my high-tech career, a series of rules have developed over time. Sometimes it is a rule for how to go about solving a particular technical problem. Other rules deal with how I work (and play) with those around me. Whatever the focus, though, these rules were not developed at some high-level strategy meeting. They were developed over time, layer by layer, like an oyster develops a pearl. This has many advantages. Instead of being based on some ideal goal and purpose, these rules have developed out of the day-to-day reality of working in a high-tech career. In no particular order, here are the rules that I find myself living with on a daily basis. Your list will certainly be different, but hopefully this will spur you to analyze and create one for yourself.

I’ve uploaded a Dilbert cartoon that I think illustrates one of the frustrating things about outsourcing call centers. Personally, I get somewhat annoyed when I call a 1-800 number for customer service and get someone on the other end who obviously does not speak English well. Take a look.

BERKELEY, California (AP) -- Move over Bionic Man and make room for BLEEX -- the Berkeley Lower Extremities Exoskeleton, with strap-on robotic legs designed to turn an ordinary human into a super strider.

Ultimately intended to help people like soldiers or firefighters carry heavy loads for long distances, these boots are made for marching.

Could we out source government? Could there be a software developed that would fulfill all the things congress and congress memebers do and place it on the desktop of all Americans? How about a website that could ease finding either your congress representivive or the right government office to send a letter to? All you would need to enter is your zipcode, email, etc and maybe the category of which area of governemnet the issue deals with. Could call it the People'sPAC (People's Political Action Commettie?)

Off-shore Outsourcing horror story

"I worked at Merrill Lynch for over 5 years, when we started off-shoring
work for Y2K to Wipro, we sent them PowerBuilder code to upgrade from
lower level versions to PB 6.5 (at the time the only Y2K compliant
version of the software). Needless to say, Wipro was only contractually
obligated to migrate the code, not test or qa it. So when it got back,
the code did not work.

Unfortunately, the "idiots" only saw the bottom-line and compared cost
of sending the code to Wipro vs. the cost of having us (American
employees) fix Wipro's mistakes, test and QA our apps. Wipro won, we lost!

Another horror story, this one more personal, after 9-11, ML started
putting up posters all over the offices that said, "We are Bullish on
America." A few month's later those poster became more and more scarce
and were replaced by poster's inviting middle managers to an off-shoring
conference ("Is Off-shoring right for you?" And "Come and Embrace
Off-shoring", etc.). My manager was Merrill Lynch's Off-shoring
"Cheer-leader". She headed ML's offshoring task force and she worked harder on
this on being a developmental manager. Because this was a project that
directly impacted the bottom-line of the firm, she thought she would
get the exposure and recognition necessary for a big promotion and raise.
Either, that or she was a lemming, like everyone in IT, and was just
doing her job. Nevertheless, she got fired on the same day I did...I
love irony.

- Mike"

I've got 3 of my own, but I"ll save it for later. What's my reaction to companies that are so uppity about outsourcing to India or other 3rd world countries? Go ahead, it's your IP you're giving away!

starting a consulting firm

Okay, so I'm looking to start a consulting firm, so to speak, and while it already "exists"(that is, it has a website and a few people behind it willing to work), has anyone else had any experience with small startups like this?

What are some of the best ways to get clients? I noticed that in a lot of my time doing desktop support that there's a vaccum of agencies that'll help with personal computing issues from helping people and businesses make appropriate technology decisions(without trying to sell them on a product) to consulting on IT management. Has anyone had any experience doing the kind of middleman IT consulting thing?

This is one of the few high tech industry available in every country that produce weapons. Question is...do you have any ethical or social barrier that makes you avoid this kind of job?

For example, one might feel guilty of creating a killing apparatus and can't live with that. Can you live with the fact that you have created something that destroys life?

How's business?

Hello all,

Lately I have been getting the same quetion from family and firends, "So how is the computer business?" With the economy so depressed, they are wondering if I am able to make enough money to survive.

My response has been that computer troubleshooting seems to have fallen into the realm of "necessity services" like plumbing and car repair. When someone's computer breaks, they need it fixed now, nearly regardless of the cost.

Have you noticed that clients are less concerned over the cost of your services lately, even in the bad economy?

Are your troubleshooting calls much more of the "just fix it" variety or are you still being hired for training?

No guarantees for high-tech degrees

Outsourcing dims job prospects for many tech grads
Tuesday, January 27, 2004 Posted: 11:56 PM EST (0456 GMT)

NEW BRUNSWICK, New Jersey (AP) -- Eager to ride the high-tech tide, Andrew Zhou double-majored in computer science and finance when he arrived at Rutgers University in 2000.

But as graduation approaches, Zhou is pinning his hopes on finance and dropping the idea he once had that computer know-how guaranteed him a job.

"Four years ago, it seemed like an awesome major," Zhou said as he waited to speak with a recruiter for a telecommunications management firm at Rutgers' annual career day.

"Now, nobody wants to get in because all the jobs are going to India."

While there are hopeful signs outside the technology sector, outsourcing of computer programming and customer service jobs to China, India and other countries with cheaper labor costs have dimmed prospects for seniors like Zhou, said Richard White, director of career services at Rutgers.

A recent report from Forrester Research projected that as many as 3.3 million American white collar tech jobs will go to overseas workers by 2015.

"Jobs that used to be available for U.S. citizens are being diverted overseas where the quality is equal or better at a fraction of the cost," White said.

The fallout from outsourcing and stagnant U.S. technology market means that seniors at San Jose State University -- in the heart of Silicon Valley -- face yet another "very tight" job market, said career center director Cheryl Allmen-Vinnedge.

"The entry level positions just aren't out there now," agreed Halbert Wilson.

Finance, health care among most promising sectors

Internal Revenue Service recruiter Doug Fuller, left, reviews Leslie Lang's resume during a job fair at Rutgers University.
A January graduate with a degree in information technology from the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Wilson is counting on contacts made during an internship with a pharmaceutical company to help him get a job.

Experts say the best sectors for seniors to find employment are in finance, health care, advertising and government. And a jump in the number of campus recruiters visiting some campuses is giving students reason for hope.

At the University of Mississippi, for instance, recruiting coordinator Gina Starnes said career center interview rooms are booked solid by corporate representatives during February -- the month many companies converge at the Oxford, Mississippi, campus to troll for job candidates.

After two consecutive years of little or no growth, the National Association of Colleges and Employers -- which tracks college to workplace job trends -- is forecasting a 12.7 percent jump in hiring this year.

NACE spokeswoman Camille Luckenbaugh warned, however, that while 51 percent of the employers surveyed by the group said they would increase recruitment of college graduates this year, another 28 percent indicated they would curtail hiring on campuses.

A leading Internet source for college students seeking entry-level jobs said listings in the accounting and retail fields have both jumped by over 50 percent compared with last year.

Job opportunities in the financial, health care and advertising sectors also have increased, said Michelle Forker, vice president of MonsterTRAK, a subsidiary of Monster.com, the Online job service.

And the Partnership for Public Service -- a nonprofit that promotes civil service career -- is predicting that the federal government will fill 73,000 jobs in the next six months.

Internal Revenue Service recruiter Doug Fuller was besieged at the Rutgers' career day.

"The economy has perhaps changed the mind-set of this generation," he said, "Where they think more about jobs with greater stability than you could encounter in the private sector."

I don't know how y'all are doing but after getting laid off from a FT gig last September, I've been making ends meet with PT contract work and unemployment.

January rolls around and in the last two weeks I have had more hits on resumes than I did in the previous four months. It's just like January used to be in the old days -- so far I've got one job offer for a FT contract-to-perm position and am scheduled for second interviews with two other FT perm positions.

How's it looking out there, kids?

FWIW, the offer came from a recruiter who found my resume on Monster and I had applied for the other two jobs via HotJobs and Monster (also saw one of them posted to Craig's List).

The group description gives a bit of my info, but I am also interested building robots with my 5-year-old, taking photos and playing guitar.

I REALLY GET BACK GOOD MONEY USING THE LAW OF GIVING AND RECEIVING!
I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought, Yeah right, this must be a scam, but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured: what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right? Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works....Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy! Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully! (print it out or download it.) Follow the simple directions and watch the money come in! It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus postage)

IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!!!! If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends.

PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Do you think I would be wasting my time posting to 1000's of newsgroups like this one if it did not work. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions. You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people like you and me asking to be included in that list. Here are the 4 easy steps to success:
STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper;PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST.Write your name and address. Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it! Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed legal! Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:

#1) B. Brown
1208 Steeple Ridge Ct
McKinney, Tx 75069 USA

#2) M. Lussier
3112 133A Ave
NW, Edmonton, AB T5A 2Z8

#3) C. Dixon
PO Box 1253
Commack, NY 11725

#4) S. Tenhagen
PO Box 715
Saline, MI 48176

#5) D. Beran
712 Dundas St,W
Whitby, Ontario, Canada, L1N 2N4

#6) J. Geathers
2282 Pineridge St
Orangeburg, SC 29118

STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up by DELETING the numbers next to them and changing it to one down so...(6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on the list.
(THINK ABOUT THIS: - THE FURTHER YOUR NAME IS TO THE BOTTOM, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE - MAKE SENSE HUH? - YOUR NAME STAYS IN CIRCULATION - DON'T THINK THAT YOU CAN HURRY THE PROCESS BY PUTTING YOUR NAME IN THE FIRST SLOT - YOU ARE ACTUALLY STOPPING YOUR NAME FROM BEING CIRCULATED OVER AND OVER.)

STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money you make! This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again.
PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way.
NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.)
So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) Send it now, add your own name to the list and you're in business!

---DIRECTIONS ----- FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS------------
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's memory.
Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list. Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one! Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.**
Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday?, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said, "e;what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember: play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work.
Happy money making !!!

I'm currently working for a company that's footing the bill for my certs. Currently, they offer most ComTIA and Microsoft certs. Right now, I'm starting on my 1st cert, A+. I also hold a BBA in Management Info Systems.

Prob is, I think that, after I get a few certs, I'll STILL have difficulty finding a real job that pays real money. I'm afraid I'll be no better off than I am now, and I'll have wasted time.

To add insult to injury, the other day I went to the HR office for something else, just to see a new hire who had an MCSE and a CCNA comlpetely exhilarated for being hired here. This is far from a dream job to anyone, so the job market must be really tough out there.

What do you all think???

I'm a Microsoft Certified Geek who's been working in control systems for industry for several years (think about all the computers that were used to actually build the car you drive). Thanks to deteriorating job security where I work, I'm looking for a job elsewhere. I have an interview for a project manager position at a bank next week. Now, I'm a pretty sharp guy. I've been building computers since I was 15, been an MCP since 1998, and passed 4 exams in 4 tries in 4 weeks to move my MCSD to .NET earlier this year with nothing more than $100 worth of cram books. I've been a pm for two years, and can hold my own through a whole project (requirements, design, development, testing, integration, deployment, maintenance, whatever).

But a bank?!?! If these people are willing to hire me, is it really a good idea to switch to a whole new industry? I guess I'm concerned only because I don't know what I don't know. Can anyone enlighten me?

Career-Op: A High-Tech Manifesto

by Douglas E. Welch, ComputorEdge Magazine

If you are considering starting a high-tech career, or are already involved in one, you are on the front lines of today’s economy. Whether you are developing new hardware and software or supporting the use of technology in your company, there are some basic responsibilities that fall upon your shoulders. The future will bring more reliance on technology than ever before and your work will become more important than ever before. If you plan on riding the technology wave into the future, I would call on you to pay close attention to the areas detailed below. Your career and the welfare of those around you could depend on it.

As you have probably seen in the description for this group, I write a weekly column on high-tech careers.

To be frank, I am always looking for topics to cover in this column. I am always trying to keep aware of changes in the high-tech career world and see if they match my experience.

I am very interested in hearing what you have to say about the trails, tribulations, advantages/disadvantages, pitfalls of working in high-tech.

What would you say to someone who was looking to get into a high-tech job? What would your advice be? What wisdom can you share? Let it all hang out. Say to us, or to me personally (and I will post it anonymously), what you have always wanted to say.

Who's first?

I've been out of work the past two years after 7 years of system administration, web development and administration and HP Openview adminsitration. This was partly due to the economy and partly due to family obligations. I'm currently taking Networking (Cisco Academy), System Administration and Programming classes to keep up to date. Ive attended SANS as a volunteer and hope to have my GIAC certification soon, and have gotten a few responses to my resume but they are few and far between. This is partly because my degree is in Russian Literature and partly because I haven't been working. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I guess one way to avoid being obsolete is to always climb up the value chain.

An economy where people get paid without doing "work" is simply mind boggling.

Eventually, machines will be making machines and software will be self improving, self replicating and self healing..... So what are humans for?
