I'm in the middle of a great show this weekend with the Venus Uprising clan. All the dances are character and story driven renditions by prominent NE dancers. My piece is titled 'Narcisse,' a takeoff on the story of Narcissus... there are several versions. In any case, he is vain. He sits at the water and gazes at himself, wishing he could engage this beautiful creature. In a tarot version, he drowns. In others, time just passes and some future day a flower springs up near the water in his place, leaning over the water to gaze at itself. My modern version uses the love and addiction angle on vanity, suggests the traditional and drowning themes but with a mirrored modern twist offered as well. I'm using the song Rosies by Amon Tobin, and my friend Irina, a lovely dancer, is featured in the mirror as my reflection. I'm really enjoying developing the piece and working with all the fabulous dancers in this show, sold out for both nights...
Blessings!

Greetings Fellow Darsh'a'holics!!!!!

For anyone who wants to join Eastwinds Tribal Drumming's pre-registered group "Beach Blanket Beledi" at the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade this Saturday , June 23rd in Coney Island, Brooklyn:

Here are some important details:

Cost: YES!!!! there is a $10 per person fee to march.. (There may be a discount if we get a large number...if that happens, it'll be a happy surprise! Plan on $10 just to be sure, ok?!) Our pre-registered group, which is called "BEACH BLANKET BELEDI," welcomes anybody and everybody OVER 18. Please note: Jeff & I are not making any money on this whatsoever-all fees go to the Mermaid Parade, to support the insanity that is Coney Island.

Time: Jeff & I will be there at 10 A.M. because I'm an anal retentive control freak...and... we want to make sure we get a good marching "spot" (not too close to anybody else's music, fer example.) We will be leading the ME percussion - we'd encourage the drummers to meet us no later than 1 pm... or not.. We would appreciate RIQ players...but any percussion is good. Remember...long parade, hot sun...plan ahead, my darlings!!!! Dancers can show up whenever the heck you like...it's all good! Just make sure you sign in and pay the nice Mermaid Parade folks. (BTW, zills...always a good parade idea!)

Finding us: I'll be l be dressed in Pirate/ Tribal garb, and wearing a small davul and a big smile. Jeff will be the big piratety-looking guy playing the AWESOME lead doumbek riffs. If anybody wants to make/carry a "Beach Blanket Beladi" sign, go for it! It's really crowded...you might want to arrive before 1pm...(Casey's left eye starts to twitch in anticipation of people showing up whenever they want..) Seriously, you REALLY might consider 1:15 at the very latest (noticible tremor starts in upper lip area.)

WARNING: Every year, some girls parade in pasties and other burlesque-style attire. There may be girls who will be scantily clad in our merry little band. Our group is strictly for OVER 18. Additionally, "Sheik of Araby" and "Gotta Go Back to Constantinople" way be spontaneously played on kazoo. Ok, you've been warned!

Questions??? Holla back on Tribe or to DrumNdancegrl@aol.com. See you on Saturday!

~ Casey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L1L1iaEpaM

"Chakra Dance Flow - Movement Meditation" DVD created by Darshan and Mariyah will be released on April 24.
The DVD will be available from Darshan (at workshops and her website, http://www.darshandances.com), from Mariyah (http://www. easterndancer.com) and regular retail (Amazon.com etc).

Here is a brief description of the program:

Chakra Dance Flow combines dance, freestyle movement and guided meditation to create a unique holistic experience, a personal retreat designed to fortify the mind with hope and confidence, and invigorate the body through focus on alignment and fluid, mesmerizing dance. Using the system of seven chakras as guidance in energy work, Darshan and Mariyah offer a journey of self-awareness - physical, emotional and spiritual. Series of body awareness and focus exercises blend with dance steps, stretches and yoga postures to reawaken our energy centers, help us release tension and anxiety, and reclaim inner balance and the sense of purpose.

Appropriate for any age and fitness level, the Chakra Dance Flow program takes you step-by-step through each of the seven sections of the retreat - 7 chakras: root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. You can access each individual chapter, and once your journey is complete, you can refresh and review the energy work you’ve done by following Darshan and Mariyah in a 10-minute Flow - a non-stop meditative dance combining all the steps and exercises featured in the main body of the program. Use the Flow whenever you need a gentle reminder to accept your body, nourish your human essence without judging, and stay in touch with the creative, hopeful, joyful spirit ever-present in all of us.

So I'll be in Seattle on Nov 4th with Turbo Tabla www.turbotabla.com and Bellydance Overdrive... These guys are a walking party. If you're in the area you should come; they will make sure you have a blast. I did a show with them in NYC the other day and we had so much fun. It's a rockin scene. And I think this new CD is going to be pretty great for dancing. Karim's POV has a great smart mix of hipness and tradition. Nov 11th I'll be down in LA for the IAMED shows! www.bellydance.org This is pretty exciting. Lots and lots of fierce dancers. Friends who can make it to one of these shows, feel free to come say hi after. I'd love to check in.
But first, don't forget to come to Cabaret Macabre this weekend if you are or have had any inkling to be in NYC. www.cabaretmacabre.com Wow what a unique and stylish show. We've been working on it for months and months, and I'm excited to present it to you. It's definitely a strange, haunting, titillating work of art.
November 19th looks like the date for the Tribal Fusion and Technique workshops in Connecticut; I'll keep you posted about registration and location for that, and you can also check www.joydances.com as well as my website www.darshandances.com.
The first weekend in December I'll be down to New Orleans to check on my PURE branch down there and get people dancing in general, maybe go and visit the Common Ground volunteers again and see how everything is going.
And it seems like by the end of winter I'll be done shooting at least 2 instructionals, and 3-4 performance DVDs.
I hope your dances are feeling fertile this season too! And hope to see you soon somewhere in this beautiful world!

What is P U R E?

PURE is collective of dancers and drummers who take music and dance out into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace. Movements from ancient sacred world traditions including Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romani gypsy, Israeli folk, Flamenco, Indian dance and drumming will be incorporated into the PURE experience.
Dance and ritual create community, drawing people together both emotionally and physically into a shared sense of the divine. As the community participates, no one is a stranger any longer.
Dancers and musicians will be traveling down the sidewalks and into public spaces to share their love of dance and music with the public and to pay homage to specific sites. This workshop will teach the core PURE choreography, as practiced in NYC, Chicago, Washington DC, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Orlando and Tokyo.

Tought by Darshan (Cammi Vance) of PURE NYC

Drum workshop + PURE dance workshop (below) = $75 per person, $68 if registered by June 24th.

This is the choreography that will be used for future public performances around New Orleans. $65 per person, $60 if registered by June 24th.

Hi All -

Apologies for the cross postings!

I am looking for 7-8 dancers in the Portland,OR area who are quick learners... preferably semi-pro to pro level performers (or Hobbyists as well with equitable experience...I know you are out there) or students who are just starting out doing pro performances; who would be interested in performing for a local fundraising event on Wednesday July 5 & Thursday July 6. You must be able to commit to performing on both nights... the time of the event has not been announced but is between 7-11pm (we would be performing earlier on). This is a fundraiser for a local cause with all proceeds going to the cause, so it is not a paid performance.

***It does not matter what your preferred style or technique is (Cabaret, Tribal, Fusion) as all are welcome, any body type, but you must be over the age of 18 for the venue and above that there is no age limit***

The performance piece is an incredibly fun, modern Gothic Bellydance piece in styling and presentation. It consists of a short, slightly intense choreography piece including a drum solo and veil piece, approximately 8-10 minutes in length. The elements of the dance movements are based on Mohini Attam (a classical Indian dance form), Bellydance (both Tribal and Cabaret) and some Classic Burlesque... it is very indicative of the New Orleans dance style and artistry.

I am nailing down a rehearsal space and the times I am looking at rehearsing are Thursdays from 7-9pm, Fridays from 7-9pm... one Saturday evening from 7-9pm and for those who can't make Thursday or Fridays possibly Sunday evenings from 8-10pm.
Yes it is an intense rehearsal schedule and I need dancers who are willing to commit their time, but the cause is definitely worth it!

I would like to get the group of performers set and ready to go no later than June 15th.

If you are interested in participating please contact me directly.

PLEASE PASS HTIS EMAIL ON TO ANY DANCER WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED!
Mix Russian specialties with weekend traditional music, folk dancing and belly dancers, and it's plain to see why this strip-mall ethnic eatery attracts a crowd. Even as the popular café dishes out Russian champagne and caviar, the Bear's rather ornate lounge keeps the vodka and music flowing while diners join the crowd on the dance floor. A gregarious staff plies clientele with duck, borscht and other Slavic favorites from the menu.
