Bachlorette/Birthday Party Belly Dancers Wanted

hellooooo ladies!

One of my best friends is getting married on August 27th. Having the great privilage of being her maid of honor, Im currently planning her bachlorette party. Thanks to the great idea Erica gave me, the Azula girls have aggreed to not only giving a quick lesson, but ALSO performing at a local bistro and lounge. The lovely Zanhaya has also agreed to bless the stage with her presence. It would be super awesome if some more of you dancers would be willing to show us your stuff! So heres the info:

When: wednesday, August 26th

Where: 360 Bistro and Lounge, Twin Falls Idaho

Time: Dinner at 8pm, performance at 9pm

I unfortunaately cant afford to pay you for your services as Im currently unemployed thanks to Eugene's economy, but i can arrange a ride and a place to stay. I also plan on putting out a tip jar. My friend Stacey has been through a lot and really deserves a special day just for her. By having this performance, Im hoping not only to entertain Stacey and the twin falls ladies at the party, but also to spread the great gift of this art, celebrate dance, promote positive body image, and create sisterhood.

So please come on down to Twin Falls on the 26th, not only for a great time, but for a great cause!

"BELLY” DVD release party 7-25-09

The long awaited “BELLY” DVD will be available at it’s DVD release party on July 25th, 2009 at The Visual Arts Collective at 3638 Osage Street in Garden City, Idaho. Doors open at 7:30pm, a screening of the locally made feature film will start at 8:00pm, and a show featuring local and regional talent including Samira Il Naia, Cairo Fusion, Mazana, Chandani, Perizada, Cecilia, Itheyla, and Azula of Shimmy Shakti, will begin at 10:00pm.There will be a mini bellydance lesson, and fashions available from StarBelly Creations. Cost is $10.00.

There are still some dance spots available. Contact me if you want to dance Starbelly@ftbproductions.com or have any questions.

If you haven’t had a chance to see “BELLY” yet here’s your chance. Even if you already saw it, or can only make it for the dancing, please come and support your sister in dance who’s made a film about “us” by one of “us”.

These vintage 1970 bellydance costumes was donated by a retired bellydancer to Full Tilt Boogie to help raise fund for their feature documentary “BELLY”. There is 3 “Costless” brand belts, and one Bar made with REAL COINS, Mirrors, and Chain Tassels. They are AMAZING! Fusion Fest recap (cross-post)

So much to talk about!! This year was a fantabulous year! Fest just keeps getting better and better each year!

First of all, thank you so much to all my Cairo Fusion ladies and their loved ones. You are simply rockstars!! NONE of the amazing things could be possible without you, and you are such a blessing to me. I am truly honored.

Friday night was a blast! Great weather, great audience, and great dancing ladies! Thank you so much to Rachel for helping get all of this organized. You are a miracle worker.

Unbelievable that I actually made it out on the town with all of you crazy people after the show. I miss that! Who'd have known the Balcony would give me and Jaquie flashbacks all night long? : )

Amar's workshop simply blew the doors off the weekend!! I heard nothing but amazing feedback. EVERYBODY that took it loved it! I'm surprised have of them made it out of their rooms and away from their computers for the evening Showcase!

Saturday's workshops were definitely something to talk about! All the ladies in mine worked their asses off! They validated the Ass-kicking part of the title! Thanks so much for being so dedicated and passionate. Shalee... the picture next to "cutie-butt" in the dictionary! Your workshop was adventurous and your style was new to my world. Thank you.

The Evening Showcase was by far-the very best this event has ever seen! All my die-hards...Azula, Dragomi, Chandni, Leyla, Amira, Gaia'a Graces...freakin' Sweet!! I can always count on amazing results from you and your ladies. It was super awesome to meet and experience Obscure Mudra, Karma, Jennifer, Bhoda Rukha, and so many more! Talk about some outstanding dancing!! If the rest of the world only knew what was lurking out here in the west!!

To the People's Choice winners...Jennifer Hepner and Nepenthe...Congratulations!!! Well deserved! Serious ass kickin' moves going on there!

For the vendors-Kathryn, I will stalk you for the rest of your life. Gaylene-thank you so much, I am so honored to have a mentor of mine playing with us. And Isabella's-You know I love your ass! Talk about super ingenuity!

All-in-all, I am 120% satisfied with the event. There wasn't a single part I didn't enjoy! (okay maybe the lighting issue that extended way beyond the comfortable time limit.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

Idaho Falls Sidewalk Art Festival

Idaho Falls Sidewalk Art Festival
July 25th and 26th
Along the Greenbelt in Idaho Falls
So on Saturday the 25th I will be bellydancing as a sort of half time performance during my friend David Devlin the magician's act this will be around 4pm on the stage and I'm pretty sure there is only one stage.
Then on Sunday the 26th from 1pm on into the afternoon the students of Habibi Belyydance studio owned by Yahaira will be doing a troupe performance and then individual solos.
Of course there will be lots of artwork, food, and other entertainment to enjoy as well so I hope to see you there!

New BD class in Idaho Falls!

My name is Bethany and I just moved to IF recently from the San Diego, Ca area and I have been asked to start my own bellydance class! So right now I have a beginner class Thursday nights at 8pm at Habibi bellydance studio. If I get enough students then I can start an advanced class. So it is $10 to drop in to one class or $32 for a month's session of four classes. So let your IF friends know they can get a piece of the bellydance pie!

I feel like being controversial...

It's been a long time since I have stirred the pot a little, but tonight it sounds like a good time. So, feel free to join me if you'd like.

Here's my question...

How long does it take for a dancer who has has impressive marketing skills, yet marginal ability or technique, and often a carefully worded bio, to be exposed? How long does it take for the rest of the world to catch on? And how many are truly dubbed by their sparkle?

It bothers me beyond belief how often you see this in the world of bellydance. I can't tell you how many times I have heard the names, seen the faces, read the amazing bios and got all excited--only to find out that I am totally unimpressed. : ( This sparks the whole initiative behind our motto of "Shut up and Dance". I don't want to hear how wonderful someone is, and how impressive their bio is , just to find out that they can't deliver all the goods. Wouldn't you rather people be impressed by your dancing/teaching ability? It urks me to think those type of people feel like the rest of us are just too stupid to know the difference. Or--here's a thought--maybe not enough of us take a stand, and therefore let the beast grow to enormous proportions. Who is truly feeding the injustice?

I'm not claiming to be super-bad-ass-of-the-world or anything, but I also don't market myself as that, nor do I word myself as such. I feel very content with where I stand in my dance education, teaching experience, and professionalism without having to carefully word my bio or deny where I came from and my true experiences as a dancer.

I miss my sisters

Hello to the lovely ladies of Cairo Fusion!

As some of you may know, Ian and I have just recently moved to Eugene, Oregon. It rains a lot but it's extremely beautiful. We've been trying to settle in and find us some jobs and it sucks because everyone is asking for resume's and we don't yet have one, but we should by tomorrow. I've found a cute coffee/pastry shop, an awesome clothing store that I hope to work at in the summer, and, good for me, Eugene is very kind to vegetarians. We are really close to downtown, and most things are in walking distance, so that's nice. I haven't started belly dancing yet but should start in the next couple of weeks. After getting to know the community here a little better, I'm also thinking of possibly starting my own troupe, so that should be exciting. If any of you want to come up, say, oh I don't know, for the Oregon County Fair featuring 3 fabulous belly dancers we all know and love, (cough coughtheindigocough) you will totally have a place to stay.

I'll be sure to keep you girls posted of life in Eugene. I'm sad to leave Cairo Fusion, but if I didn't do it soon I would probably postpone my career goals until a hip broke!! I plan to eventually come back and hope at that time you girls will still have me : )

Hello Beautiful Dancers!

I am currently building my website. It is a very eclectic site. Much of it is devoted to the promotion of local art. Within the section called “Art Organizations” is a sub nav for “Dance”. I am wanting to add a section just for BellyDancers/Troupes. There are so many wonderful dancers and troupes in Boise.

I am asking you for your help in collecting as much info as possible on the Boise BellyDance scene and the different troupes and resources. I wish to promote all the groups equally. I hope I am not stepping into any politics when requesting information on your group while asking for links to others. I do not know if there is any rivalry in the dance community. Even that information would be a good thing for me to know.

I also an looking for essays and I may put up personal profiles of dancers if you wish. Just need a good jpeg image and a text bio. So that’s for your attention.

What's an unaffiliated dancer to do?

For a variety of reasons (money, time, dancing politics) my dance partner and great friend Stephanie (goddess hips) and I both stopped taking regular classes last year. We have found joy in Voi (poi veil) and have made personal commitments to each other to continue our efforts. We get together weekly and sometime twice a week to dance together. We are currently working on a new effort and are about half way there (yay) but now we wonder if our new diddy will ever see the light of an audience.

Recently I was asked if it was even possible to dance/perform if not affiliated with a specific group. Good question.

So now I ask you, will anyone let us share the stage with them? Is a dancer (hobby or otherwise) required to sustain classes just to have opportunities to perform during the summer? I believe that while the openness is there, what is to persuade a troupe leader, who already has to juggle their own students into a 1 hr group performance, to let us two strays into their precious ops to perform? Should we even continue to focus on timing if no one will ever see us? Is all this work worth it just to do it once at some random under attended event? How do you stay connected and be included if you aren't really as socially/dancer connected as most? or cannot afford regular classes?

Performing has been my one effort to push myself outside of my comfort zone, but now with no affiliation, where do we find that?

Maybe it will be us with a boom box, in the park, spinning for the birds and squirrels?

Holiday Party~

Is anyone interested in participating in a yard sale? I am aiming for May 31 - Saturday from 8 - 3 and advertising it in the Statesmen and Boise Weekly.
10 x 10 spaces will be marked out, and you can reserve your space for $10.00. You can bring whatever you want - belly dance items, clothes, household goods - all the various and assorted good stuff that goes in yard sales. I will take care of the advertising, posting of the signs and provide the bathroom!! You could set up Friday night and cover with a tarp - the yard is locked so we can leave the stuff out overnight if needed, or you can set up Saturday morning.
Spread the word and let me know if you, or anyone else, is interested - that way I can get my act together and get it planned out.

The Yard Dogs are going an a short tour in May. To mostly small towns with great small town names like Crystal Bay, Boise, Pocatello, Missoula and Jackson Hole.

We’re going to call this the Windhorse tour. Because, among other reasons, there are probably wind and horses where we are going.

And here’s the kicker. The Indigo Belly Dance - Rachel Brice, Mardi Love and Zoe Jakes - will be on tour with us. How’s that for a pack of hooligans! Saddle up and buckle down. LIB’s Green Mission is to create an event where participants can have amazing and fulfilling experiences whilst remaining fully conscious of the natural environment and their effect upon it. This mission requires organizational assessment of the various aspects of LIB’s natural impact. Concerning actual festival infrastructure, LIB will make liberal use of renewable energy sources like solar and wind for power, radically reduce waste through the use of recyclable and reusable products, and offer healthy, locally produced, organic food and drink options. Furthermore, LIB will act as an educational forum in regards to the ecologically friendly and sustainable choices we can all make in our lives. Through these workshops and seminars we hope to inspire our community, the public, and similar events to adopt practices that will make a positive difference for the planet. Ultimately it is our belief that this Green Mission will enhance the circumstances in
which we celebrate life, have fun, and share our greatest experiences together.
