Tapes?

Aloha everyone!

I'm super duper new to this tribe but so happy to be here.

So, a little bit about me, I'm pretty new to hooping. Saw a girl at a club doing it and I was mesmerized. I wanted to do it, so I did and I am and I keep trying and I LOVE IT!

So anywho, I have been making my own hoops. I've been using 100 psi 3/4" tubing. But as for tape and decorations I feel like I'm at a stand still. I've seen so many beautiful tapes available online but I like to buy local and wondered if anyone knew of anywhere in town (or around town) where I could purchase some pretty funky tapes? So far, I've been using colored duct tape and electrical tape. I've also had adventures with a glue gun and ribbon that have worked out pretty okay but I'm mainly after some mirror like tape.

Any and all help would be appreciated. If you don't know of anywhere in town, I would still love to hear recommendations for online shops you've dealt with successfully.

Light and Motion is an all Day Prop Intensive to deepen your understanding and skill in the many forms of prop manipulation and the art of working fire. You do not need to be a seasoned prop addict to attend, we are equally interested in introducing people to some cool new toys as we are in inspiring seasoned professionals. All you need is a growing love of the hoop, spinning, juggling or fire and a desire to take a break from the chaos of life, meet some like-minded people, and enrich the sense of wonder and direction in your life.

The perfect tubing..

Heya!

I'm new here, so a bit of an introduction is in order, I suppose. ^.^ My girlfriend saw a burlesque routine with a hoop a while back, and then I saw some of the hoopers at the Pride Parade last year, and a spark of interest was born. ^.^ So we've picked it up, and are having a blast so far! We made ourselves a couple of hoops, and have been fiddling around with decorating them and spinning them a bit, with mixed results. XD

I had a quick question for you guys though.. when we decided to make our own hoops, we trawled around in a few home improvement stores to try and find the tubing listed on the instruction page from JasonUnbound. We managed to find 3/4" 100PSI tubing (Which our current hoops are made of) at the Home Depot near North Hill mall, and learned that the Home Depot down by Chinook should have 1" 100PSI tubing (according to one of the guys at the North Hill location). But I've yet to stumble upon a source for 3/4" 160PSI tubing.. in fact, when I brought up that that was what I was looking for to an employee at the Rona Hardware store in Crowfoot Crossing, I was told that it doesn't exist! Silly people.. >.<;;

So I guess my question is if any of you know of a good place for a couple of girls to find that perfect tubing! I'm on the brink of grabbing the Yellow Pages and calling every lead I can think of, but I figured that someone on here might be able to save me the trouble. ^.^

And if you happen to know anywhere in Calgary to find some fun tape, I'd love to hear that too! ^.^

Sunday hoop jams starting up again

Hey everyone, I know its short notice but a group of us are going hooping today at Olympic Plaza so if your interested you should come and join us down there. The weather will be nice and we will be there for 2:30ish.

Hope to see any of you out there.

Now that its summer we should be doing our regular hoop jams at OP on Sundays again so if you can't make it today then come whenever sunday you can where the sun is shining.

I will try to post more in advance if when I know we will be going hoopin for sure.

The Underwear Affair

I know this doesn't really have much to do with hooping, but I was wondering if anyone might be willing to donate to the Underwear affair. It is a fund raiser for cancer below the belt, that includes a 5k walk/10k run in your underwear. I was thinking about doing the 5k walk with my hoop.

Weekly play space!

The new Velocity studio will be open for its first Juggle Jam this Sunday from 7-9. Come on out and play!

1401 10th Ave S.E. (on the #1 bus route)

After this weekend the jams will be every Saturday from 4-6.

Hooping classes

hello people of the world... well, mostly just Calgary. I am teaching a hooping class at Beltline athletics on 2nd and 12th ave SW. I'm going to be teaching class 8 of 10 this coming week, so the session is almost over, however, I am teaching a new 10 week session after Christmas and I encourage everyone to come. It has been an absolute blast, we've made so much progress and have a great time together every week. It also gives us a great big indoor space to practice during the yucky cold winter time. Anyone is welcome to attend one of the last classes this session for free to see what you think, and the next ten week session is about 66 dollars or so, so it's a pretty good deal. Also if you don't already have a hoola hoop, or want a new one, Geoff my partner makes beautiful hoops. He made hoops for most of my students this session. Finding hooping space and time this Winter

Winter is fast approaching and I know how hard it can be to find decent space to jam during the snowy cold months. Some of you I have already talked to in person and I know are interested in the possibility of us all pitching in a few bucks per jam session to rent out a hall. I am thinking some place central like bankview community hall or in the kensington area.

This would be a weekly event and we could rent a hall for 1 -2 hours a week so that we can keep the community strong and get are jam on! I am thinking Saturdays might be a good day cuz they seemed to work well during the summer months, if not I'd like to hear some feed back on what days would be good. I know for me Mondays and Wednesdays are out but other days are looking good.

Let me know what you think, and I will start calling around looking for appropriate jam space.

play time?

anyone want to play on Halloween/Dia de los muertos/day of the dead? There is an all ages party at the Killarney Glengarry Communitee Centre (2828 28 St. SW....on the #6 bus route) from 8:00pm till dawn. The space is incredible....high ceilings and lots of dance space. They've got 3 bands and 2 or 3 DJ's as well as belly dancing and contact juggling.....and it's of course a costume
The tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door and all the procedes are going to the Global Youth Network.
Tickets can be purchased at Bushido Tattoos or Jane Doe Market place.
The reason eye post it hear, is that the organizers were mentioning that they were making space for poi spinning, hula hooping, stilt walkers, etc. And there's a big field next to the centre for anyone who wants to spin fire

Sunday Night Drum Circle

Birthday hoop down at OP on Aug 4th

Hey all,

So its my 24th bday on August 3rd (Friday) so on Aug 4th (Sat) I was thinking we should have a big hoop down at the regular place. I am putting the invite out to all calgary hoopers to come and hoop it up with me, and then maybe we could go for drinks at a pub or patio nearby.

Folk fest hoop jam July 26-29

Hey all,

I am just wondering who is going to be at folk fest this year and if we should plan to bring our hoops and hoop it up together.

I am going for all 4 days and will definitely have my hoops with me. I probably bring maximum 2 to share cuz I find anymore then that gets annoying to cart around with all the people and being there all day.

I'd love to get a big crowd of hoopers together though and just give'er. There is usually quite a few hoopers that seem to go now so I figure we could turn it into a real big hoop down.

Pride parade this Sunday!

Hey everyone its the Pride parade on Sunday and its running down 8th ave (stephen ave) downtown starting from 8st and ending at olympic plaza where there will be a street festival. I am taking my hoops down with Kyle and we will be in costume hooping, as well I think there will be a couple other hoopers. If any of you want to come and support Calgary pride and have fun at OP then come on out!

OMG I did it!

I got it to work! I am so thrilled! I made a new hoop today. After seeing all the other hoops, and getting some awesome advice, I Made a hoop about a foot bigger, and instead of having lopsided weight, I filled the darn thing with oatmeal (ok, not a usual fill I know) and did 1 layer of duct tape. Then I tried it out.

I am instantly able to waist hoop for 10 min! I can walk a bit while hooping and I tried to turn while hooping...I need to work on the turning. I am totally impressed! I did it!

Oh man, I got way too wonky today in the park and on this head, spin toss thing I rolled my ankle worse than I can ever remember. I've been limping around the house the rest of the day, I think I need to be more careful. Hope I'm better tommorow, with both the ankle and the toss.

Ok, so I have to admit, I am brand spanking new to hooping. I hope to be able to keep the hoop up to start with! Not sure if my hoop is to heavy or what, but it seems to prefer the ground to my hips. I made the hoop myself, so not totally sure if it is right. I am so glad to have found a local tribe! So if you have any advice, lay it on me....please.....

Fire spinning show tonight!

There is a fire show happening tonight at Oolong teahouse on right off of 10street in Kensington by Kensington Rd.

There will be fire poi, hooping, staff and other cool fire toys. Myself will be performing as well as many others. If interested in coming the fireshow should start around 10pm, but the party starts at 7. Hope to see you there!

Hey all,

I have started a tribe for Calgary hula hoopers because it seems the void is large enough to warrant one. This city has been lacking a tribe now for a while, and this summer I noticed there seems to be a lot of new hoopers that have been having difficulties connecting with other hoopers. Well no longer! If you have the internet it should be now easy to get informed on the local hoop scene.

Feel free to subscribe to this tribe and post hooping events located in Calgary, find out about other hoop jams going on around town, and to generally connect with all the hooping friends you've made around cowtown. Also, invite friend's you think would be interested in this tribe.

I will keep you posted on any hoop happenings as they become aware.
