Progress and Cycles

Progress and Cycles

Are you concerned with the progress you are making in your development of consciousness, or in your spiritual journey. When you see yourself not 'making progress' do you think there is something wrong or that you are failing? And when you are 'making progress' do you usually have a pride of achievement? – perhaps a sign that you have not attained the assumed state of consciousness or enlightenment. In fact, pride of achievement is antithetical to the soul journey.

Much of what we perceive as progress is really a superficial measurement of our experiences. When viewing anything with the measuring stick of progress what we are trying to do is to quantify and compare between now and before. Most of this perception is distorted because we do not have an accurate assessment of ourselves in the present. What might be a more accurate statement of perceptions of progress might be something like: "I didn't like where I was before. I like (or like more) where I am now." This has nothing to do with objectivity, but might be an honest subjective statement of the way you feel about yourself. If that is so, then it should be expressed as a feeling rather than as a fact.

Very often the idea of progress is linked to achieving goals. People set goals that they believe or assume are progressive in some way. Then when the goals are achieved one could say that they made progress. However, it would be more accurate to say, "I achieved this goal which I set for myself." The goal could just as easily make one's life worse in the long run, so whether it is progress or not can probably not be known for some time, if ever.

There are many books that describe well the process of setting goals and reaching them. Goal setting is useful for personality training, activity and outward achievement. But goal setting does not apply to the soul journey.

Progress is a myth, a personality time-dimension myth. This does not mean it doesn't exist. It really is a way of speaking about change that we like better than the previous state. A myth is a metaphor or symbol, and not a factual way of speaking. Therefore, progress is not an objective reality – not even in the linear, time dimension.

Spirituality encompasses dimensions beyond time, and therefore the myth of progress does not apply – not even symbolically or metaphorically. When spiritual progress is spoken of it is a fantasy myth that gives us a way of speaking which indicates that something is happening psychically.

Progress somewhat more accurately refers to linear reality, but even there it does not have relevant objectivity because life is cyclical, not linear. All peoples prior to modern times have viewed life as cyclical rather than linear. For example, Plato and his disciples said that a Great Year was approximately 36,000 years, and then things would start over or at least another cycle would begin. The Mayans claimed an 'age' was 26,000 years. In Hinduism, Brahma is said to dream the world in billion-year cycles divided into four ages or yugas. The present one is called Kali Yuga, or the age of Kali, the destroyer.

Consciousness evolves or develops in a cyclical pattern as well. All cycles are understood to have three phases:

a.) a beginning – something new starting.
b.) a development that involves learning through trial and error, mistakes, etc.
c.) a destructive or terminating phase – completion and preparation for a new cycle.

The second phase is usually the longest – so long in fact that often we are not aware of the other two phases. This is because we don't learn very readily from our experiences. In fact, many people do not realize that most of our experiences are meant to teach us something. Therefore they don't ask questions about what they could learn from their experiences.

Historically the idea of progress did not exist for humanity until about 1300 AD. Up to that time everything was seen as cyclical. Even today most primitive cultures, or peoples who are not technologically developed and who live at a subsistence level close to the ground and nature, do not expect anything to change. For them the future is but an extension or repetition of the present. Therefore there is nothing to be concerned about other than working with what is at hand at the moment.

Between about 1300 and 1600 A.D. there was a discernible development of the rational mind. Formal education in the West started to become more widespread. Academic education develops the mind. With the development of the rational mind, the linear view of reality became more common. Also, with the development of the mind, the will develops, and people begin to realize that they have choices. To choose is to exercise the will.

Mind development requires the ability to analyze. Analysis separates things, and we then quantify, compare and choose what we want. We also begin to realize that we now can work to acquire what we have chosen, based on what we want. The mind then becomes an instrument to fulfill our desires.

This means that the future can be different from the present. The idea of progress enters in. But what we call progress then is often little more than getting and having what we want but didn't have before. If we get what we want, we call that progress. But from a higher perspective it may not be progress at all – just more experience.

There are still traditional cultures where formal education is either non-existent or minimal. These cultures do not have the idea of progress, nor do they expect the future to be any different than the present or past. They are often very yin in their energies and rather than trying to control nature (controlling is yang) they see their relationship to nature as more responsive than controlling. Nature is clearly cyclical.

When we go into an altered state of consciousness for inner work, the lower mind recedes and we experience self and other outside of a linear framework. The altered consciousness of the meditative state is yin, which is essential for the expansion of consciousness, for flowing with the cycles of unfolding experiences, and for the experience of quality rather than quantity. The self is not a quantitative, objective reality. Nor is the other. Both self and other are qualitative, non-linear, subjective experiences, living in a cyclical universe.
Magic Apple Dolls

Make Magic Apple Dolls
Apples are sacred
symbols of the witch. Our holy land, Avalon,
means Apple-land or Island of Apples. Slice
an apple through the midsection and its seeds
reveal the sacred shape of the pentacle.
You will need two large apples, one for Mabon
and one for Modron, 2 pencils and 2 dowels
about 12 inches long, a paring knife, a glass
or bowl of water to wash your fingers, a plate,
and a towel to wipe your hands. Peel and core
the apples. Carve a face in the apples. Place
apples on a dowel and stand them in a jar
to dry (start now). Then charge in a magick
circle. After 2 or 3 weeks, they should look
like shrunken heads. Make them into dolls. Use
wheat, dried herbs or doll's hair for hair.
Dress them in tiny robes and bring them into
the circle, asking goddess to charge them with
their light.

Hang these Mabon and Madron heads on a Witch's
cord or a Mabon wreath.

A Shaman's journey

A shaman can be broadly defined as a person of either sex who can perceive the world of spirits, and by entering a trance, journey to anohter reality, to communicate with its inhabitants, and to gain spiritual knowledge.

Shamans have a knowledge of the spiritual structure of life. They see that humans have a relationship --both spiritual and coropral -- with all the other beings in the world, and cannot live in isolation from them. Shamans were the first people to work actively with the sacred, the first people to enter into a sacred dialogue with creation.

In the shaman's world, wherever you are and whatever you are doing, you are surrounded by spirits. All so-called living things, such as plants and animals, have spirits, but so do the things we normally regard as inanimate, such as rocks and rivers. Everything is part of the fabric of creation, and so everything has a spirit.

In the beginning was the everything, the everything that was male and the everything that was female, the everything that was hot and the everything that was cold, was up and down, was dark and light -- the Great-Grandfather and the Great-Grandmother of all things.

Because all things are alive, all things must be respected. The ethics of shamanism is therefore of prime importance. The first step on the shamanic path is to learn that every action must be performed with respect and gratitude. You cannot simply go out and cut down a tree; the tree is a being just as you are. You need to talk to it, and thank it for its gifts. You must say prayers for its spirit, and give a gift in exchange for what you take.

Stand in an open place where you can see a long way, and you will notice hat you are in the center of a circle, the circle of the horizon. Your place at the center of this circle is the sacred center of the world, and the sacred hoop of the horizon goes all around you. We are all of us, all of the time, in the sacred center of the world, but we usually simply fail to notice it.

Medicine in a shamanic sense refers not only to a means of healing, but also to the knowledge and power inherent in every life form. The medicine wheel is a way of gaining access to the essence of existence. The circle and cross of the medicine wheel -- also know as the "four quarters of the world" -- is a symbol found in many cultures all over the globe.

Just as you are in the center of a circle with the four directions all around you, you also have the sky above you and the earth beneath you. Humans inhabit a middle area between the upper and lower worlds.

The main work of the shaman is to travel between the three worlds to seek enlightenment on behalf of his or her people. Shamans travel to find healing for someone, or to find a person, object, or information, or to battle hostile spirits.

The journey between the three worlds is the shaman's prine function. Before any ceremony can take place, they prepare themselves for the journey in a ritual manner, often helped by assistants.

This is information I found in a book by Nicholas Wood. I will post more on the medicine wheel at another time. I hope this information is helpful. And, of course, this is just one view

children and animal guides

Children are naturals at working with the spirit world and animal guides. Their imaginations are still unblocked by adult prejudices and disbelief's. The concept of having an invisible animal watching over them makes perfect sense to children. Think of the number of kids who have imaginary friends. How many of those friends might actually be spirit guides who in later life still guide, but cannot have the same beautiful relationship with a person that they did when the person was still a child before they threw such "childish games of fantasy" away? Perhaps you may be able to reconnect with some of these remembered friends of your own youth.

Children can easily be taught to work with guides and to shapeshift. Kids are often reoccurring dreams of an animal or are drawn to certain animals at the zoo. parents often know intuitively what their child's guardian might be. Meditating on it, remembering the child's habits and quirks, thinking of how they would react to different situations, will often confirm that vague feeling. Don't try to double guess yourself. Just trust that the first image you get is probably the right one.

Even if you cannot figure out your child's guide they more than likely will on their own if you ask them. As they grow their guide might change or they might meet new ones. Children tend to be better at dealing with this than adults because they are by nature more adaptable. Knowing what your child's guide might be can help you in raising the child. More often than not a child's main guide is one that mirrors their strong points and weaknesses. If you know their guide you will know how and where they might need support. Not to say that you should expect them to fail in those areas, just that they might need a bit more support. Remember not to baby them in those areas though because it is most often through adversity that the strongest abilities will appear

writing your own spells and rituals

Type of Spell or Formula:
This is the very first step in creating your own ritual or spell. You must first know what you want done, before putting into action, how it is to be done. Health, wealth, happiness, fortune, luck. Like a Christian prayer, your ritual is a request to the Gods on your own behalf. The old adage applies though: Careful what you wish for, you may get it.

Date & Time Made:
Catalog your work in a note book or perhaps place the steps for your Ritual in your BOS. This way you may come back when you are ready to write another. Use the Date and Time to track your work from beginning to end. This will also allow you to track your progress from beginning to end as well.

Reference:
Keep a list of references, such as books or web sites you use for writing your rituals. If you use someone else's work on a regular basis, it is a good idea to keep an accounting of this. Eventually you will find your own style, even an emulation of someone you respect and admire. As you go along, you will acquire the talent for writing some wonderful ritual all on your own. Still it is always a nice idea to keep a record of how you began.

Astrological Phase:
Now we must look at the action you are taking. If you are increasing your health or luck, for instance, you will want to do your ritual during the Waxing Moon or the Full Moon. If you are decreasing, say your weight, you will want to do your ritual during the Waxing or New Moon phase. Important also is the day of the week, as each day represents a different balance in the universe. Generally speaking if you are increasing, Monday - Wednesday. If you are decreasing, Thursday - Saturday. The lucky person is the one who can match both the phase of the Moon to the day of the week. If you must do one OR the other, the Moon phase is the most important thing to consider.

List Of Ingredients &/or Supplies Needed:
Depending on what you are writing the ritual for, you will need Various items in order to perform the ritual. For instance, if you are seeking love, you will need a red or pink candle, patchouli incense or oil for burning. Some herbs for your quest for love are rose and carnation petals. Other rituals will require other items, but you get the idea. In later links there will be list of herbs, colors, candles and crystals for you to choose from. Music is another nice addition to your ritual.

Specific Location Required:
A very important phase of writing your ritual is the choice of Sacred space in which to perform your ritual. This place should be out of the traffic of the household, quiet and entirely your own. A basement or back room perhaps. An attic will also do quite well. Anyplace you may feel comfortable in. When preparing to actually do the ritual, take the phones off the hook and turn off whatever background noise you can that may disturb your concentration. Tell friends and family you will be out of the house at that time to decrease the chances of you being disturbed by an unexpected visitor.

Results:
When you are done with your ritual, you may wish to catalog your results. Feelings, visions and power felt. What you saw in your mind, the motion of the candles and the response felt within regarding the culmination of your ritual goals. You may keep this information in your BOS, but it is sometimes a good idea to keep a separate diary for this information.

Deities Invoked During Preparation &/or Use:
If you follow a specific tradition, such as Greek, you will choose the deity associated with your ritual goal for the invoking and charging functions of casting the circle. Call on the power of that Specific God and Goddess. If you are of the Wiccan tradition or other "thrown together" tradition, you may choose whatever vision of The Gods you wish. In either case, focus your worship and requests to those invoked and charged Gods. Ask them as a Christian would pray for the desired ending you seek to your ritual.

Step By Step Instructions For Preparations:
1) Meditate on your goal

2) write out your desire

3) Pick the appropriate day and time for your ritual

4) Acquire the items, such as candle, incense and crystals

5) Choose a Sacred Space to perform your ritual

6) Select appropriate music if you wish

7) Select the Gods to be invoked and charged

8) When the ritual is finished, record your findings. You may use The RITUAL RECORD SHEET if you wish, or make one of your own.

Additional Notes:
Remember, contrary to the Christian mass, a Pagan ritual is supposed to be fun and happy. A time to commune with the Gods and communicate with your higher self. An inner feeling of peace should be felt.

How To Write Your Own Rituals
1. Write the names of all the Sabbats on individual pieces of paper.

2. Write notes about each of the Sabbats significance, colors, symbols, etc.

3. Collect information on Sabbats ,(ie-books, web sites, etc, above too), and find the "common themes" among them & list.

4. Write your own "words" for the ritual...or even use other "words" you've found that you are comfortable with.

5. Now with that information, start writing the rituals, one by one. Be sure you are comfortable with what you have chosen. And, be sure you add the casting of the circle, the thanks, and closing of the circle to the rituals.

6. Now copy these rituals into your BOS.

7. Don't be afraid to "experiment" with them, it's all what is "good for you", no one has "The Correct and Only Way" to perform a ritual. Just remember to let it come naturally to you, the Goddess sometimes plays a part in these things too!

Goddess Ge

Goddess: Ge

SUGGESTED MANTRA: Mother
Ge is the first and ultimate deity, Mother Earth, revered by men and
gods. She is the goddess of people, animals, ecosystems and the
universe, who connects us to the universal source of "mothering" and
"nurturing".

SUGGESTED AFFIRMATIONS:
~ Wherever I go, I am loved
~ There is purity in the quiet touch
~ Love is eternal and ever-lasting
~ Love flows into my life like a river
~ I stand in complete satisfaction
~ I embrace life in its absolute fullness
~ I'm calm and centred, now and always
~ I am allowed to stop and appreciate the quiet

Related essences: Goddessence KALI 100% pure essential oil blend

Related gemstones: Green calcite, amber, jet, black tourmaline, geodes

In her pre-Hellenic myths, Greek goddess Ge brought forth all life
from the darkness and chaos, breathing life and form into all matter.
Later, under patriarchal influence, she was simply relegated to the
role of mother of the first race of Olympian gods (the Titans),
although her status as supreme deity was not lessened.

According to Greek mythology, she gave birth to Uranus, the Sky, whom
she made her equal. Later Uranus became her husband, and she gave
birth to the Titans, (the 15th satellite of planet Saturn is named
after them), and the Cyclopes. In an bid to overthrow his father's
rule, Cronus (Roman Saturn) severed Uranus' genitals and threw them
into the ocean, the alchemy resulting in the birth of Aphrodite.

Commonly represented in the form of a giant woman, Ge was also the
original prophetess at the main centre of divination in ancient Greece
- the Delphic oracle. The oracle was located at the place where the
wisdom of the earth and humanity meet (later, the oracle was taken
over by Apollo), and revealed information about the sustenance of
human life.

HER MODERN ENERGY

As the first mother, great Earth Mother, revered by man and gods, Ge
represents the nurturing mother-love known to all her creatures. Her
energy vibrates within us when we extend those same attributes back to
the earth and her creatures. When we abuse the earth, we suffer the
consequences, and we encounter more hardship in our lives.

DO THIS

In the Southern Hemisphere: Share a feast of Spring vegetables with
your family. Find a provedore who has pride in the quality of their
vegetables, or pick them yourself with consciousness and gratitude to Ge.

In the Northern Hemisphere: Make Ge's soup one afternoon - it should
serve around 8 to 10 people, so take the opportunity to surround
yourself with loved ones to share it! When preparing the soup, you may
prepare each vegetable as you go.... as one vegetable goes into the
pot, start work on preparing the next one, and so forth.

2 cups lentils and other legumes of choice, pre-soaked if necessary
3 tablespoons virgin olive oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 slices bacon, chopped
1/4 cup chopped carrots
1 litre beef stock
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup chopped parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
3 tablespoons parsley
3 to 4 cloves garlic
dash of thyme
1 tin Roma tomatoes, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons wine vinegar

Heat the olive oil in a large pot and stir the onions until golden and
transparent. Add the rinsed lentils and legumes, the beef stock, 5
cups fresh spring water, and the remaining vegetables (except tomatoes
and vinegar). Let the soup simmer slowly for 90 minutes while you look
through your photo albums and remember the purity of your mother's
love for you in your childhood, or of your love for your children.
Take all the time you need - if you lose yourself in the delicious
memories for longer than 90 minutes, then the soup will only taste the
better for it.

Before serving, add the tomatoes and vinegar, and cover for another 30
minutes. This should give you time to pick up the phone and let your
mother know how much you love her, or to glow with your own
mother-love for your children. Take the time to let your loved ones
know how you feel.

Finally, season to taste and serve with crusty bread.... Eat with
consciousness, it will bring about a profound sense of peace if we can
nurture a close and respectful relationship with our Mother Earth.

Invocation of the earth Goddess

Invocation of the Earth Goddess
.

Listen to the words of the Great Goddess, whose bounty was worshipped at Berekhet Ram, Willendorf, Laussel, Lespugue, and Catal Huyuk. She is the fertile Earth Mother who has sustained and nourished us since time immemorial. She is the Womb of the Earth, incubating our unborn dreams until it is time to nurture them into existence. She is the Goddess of Thirteen Moons whose sacred blood flows to renew the land and bring forth new life. She is the Bear Mother fiercely protecting her blessed children. She is the River Goddess who celebrates the joy of her own being, ecstatically dancing the spiral of life.
She has been with us since the beginning. She remains with us until the wheel’s last turning. She lives inside us all.
Though She surrounds and suffuses us, we may not always take heed of Her words. Though She is an integral element of all being, we may not always recognize the form of Her manifestation. Though She provides for us in all ways, we may not always express our full gratitude.
Therefore, listen for Her voice in the hoot of an owl calling across the ages, in the crackle and flicker of a blazing fire that warms your spirit. Hear Her whispers in the song of an ancient seashell, pressed against your ear to reveal secrets of long ago. Let the heartbeat of the earth pulse through your veins and listen for the voice of the Goddess within your own soul. Listen to Her words, and remember…

types of magick

Types of magick:

Anthropologists often distinguish between two forms of magick, the sympathetic and the contiguous. Sympathetic magick works on the principle that like produces like. Contiguous magick operates on the belief that things that have been in contact will continue to act on each other after the physical contact has ceased. There is also a common distinction made between black magick and white magick. White magick is characterized by rites and spells designed to produce beneficial effects for the community or individual, particularly in those cases where an illness is considered to be the result of evil demons or of black magick. What follows is a brief, nowhere complete list of some of the more popular magickal beliefs.

Low Magick, also known as Sympathetic or Folk magick seems a slightly condescending term, but it is used to separate it from the structured, religious-philosoph ical approach of "High Magick."

Low Magick is more properly called Sympathetic Magick, because it operates by an object or device being in sympathy with the person at whom the magick force is directed, through a physical, psychic or symbolic link. It is magick of the mind, an invocation of minor spirits or elementals to carry out an action. Vodoun and other types of Voodoo magick in South America and the Caribbean, as well as New Age candle-magick, love spells, runes etc, are all forms of Sympathetic Magick.

Low Magick can be divided into two categories, Homeopathic and Contagious

Homeopathic Magick, as used in homeopathic ritual, produces like for like. For example, a pin stuck into a symbolic representation of a person causes pain. This is an extreme example, as more commonly, other symbolic methods are used, such as to bring loved ones together, or for healing or binding.

Contagious Magick works on the principle that things that were previously in contact or joined still carry influence over each other. For example, blood, hair or nail clippings can be used to curse, bless, heal or communicate with the spirit of another.

High Magick

High Magick is a highly ritualized invocation of spiritual powers and is part of a greater philosophy and belief system, including rituals of the Kabala or the Hermetic Orders. High Magick invokes spiritual energy, channeled for healing, protection, binding, curses or vengeance.

Kabbalistic

Two common works of Hebrew literature are the Torah, otherwise known as the Pentateuch - the first five books in the Christian Bible and the Talmud, a collection of commentaries and thoughts of highly-regarded Hebrew scholars, priests, and rabbis. However, a much less known work is the Kabbalah, upon which are based the mystical foundations of the religion.

Kabbalism is based on the belief that creation of all that exists occurred through emanation from God and that there exists a hidden meaning in the placement and numeric values of the letters in the Torah.

African

The leading modern African religions of the western hemisphere are descended from one of two tribal cultures: the people of Ifà, from which Santeria is derived, and those of the Congo, which has Voudon and Palo as its modern descendants. These beliefs are completely different and in some cases diametrically opposed, and yet, their similarity of perspective is striking. Therefore, these very different religions can be grouped together.

Most magickal effects in these beliefs are gained through supplication to higher powers. These powers can be in the form of deities, administrators in the tradition of the Saints of Christian thought or the Archangels of the Hebrews. Spirits of dead ancestors rank high in importance and are often asked for advice or guidance. Usually, some sort of sacrifice or offering is required in such instances and plays an important role in the outcome.

Wicca

Early English (Saxon) term for witch, derived from a German root word meaning "to twist or to bend." Also used to denote the witch religion, a neo-pagan, nature-oriented, religious practice having its roots in pre-Christian western Europe and undergoing a 20th century revival, especially in the United States and Great Britain. It is a relatively modern religion, which claims its roots in various forms of the Old Religions of Europe, but incorporates some of the myths and practices of the Christian Church. It owes its beginnings to Gerald Gardner, who announced to the world that he was a witch in 1957, shortly after England repealed its laws against witchcraft. The religion is earth-based and magickal and Wiccans typically worship both a God and Goddess.

Shamanism

A shaman is an individual who willfully and purposefully enters an altered state of consciousness to gain access to some hidden reality with the usual intent of performing some magickal work or attaining uncommon knowledge. Almost always, there is identification with a specific animal, called a "totem animal" or "spirit animal." These animals act as guides in the other reality and aid the visiting shaman in avoiding dangers. It is believed that shamans originally acted as healers for tribes or groups as the word "medicine" in most shamanic traditions is interchangeable with "magick."

Witchcraft

Witchcraft, or Traditional Witchcraft has long defied denfinition and rightfully so. Traditional Witchcraft is not as much a belief system as it is a system of willful and procedural actions. The rede of the true "witch" could be summarily stated as "whatever works". Magick exists without witches. Witches become adept at the manipulation and harnessing of existing natural and supernatural forces and the laws of nature to achieve their desired results. Hence, there can be good and bad witches depending on their intents. All forms of magick and magickal thought can and should be at the disposal of a true witch, with only the individual witch's ethics limiting their uses. True witchcraft holds no allegiances to any particular affiliation, but rather, stands alone.
blessed be

The Magickal Broom

The Magickal Broom

Brooms are ancient tools of magick. European folklore is filled with tales of brooms and their ritual uses. Though often associated with witches, brooms can be found in virtually every household in every country in the world. Every day, millions of these bristled tools are used in quite ordinary ways. Why, then, do they possess such a mystic aura?
This is revealed by a look at the broom's function. Brooms are used to sweep. Sweeping cleans; it purifies. Brooms have long been associated with purification and protection.
In the past they have been made of windle straw, bean stalks, bullrush, thorn branches, mullein stalks or ragweed (mugwort or wormwood); but the most traditional witch's besom is a brush of birch bound by willow to a shaft of ash. The broom is a symbol of domesticity as well as sexuality. Standing vertically in its normal position, the broom is a phallic symbol, but inverted, it represents a woman's pubic area and the line between her thighs.
Most of us are familiar with the flat Shaker-type brooms; which are the most common in North America today. Round brooms, while attractive, aren't as effective in performing their simple mission, so flat brooms have all but overtaken their round counterparts. Round brooms are made of natural materials: a wooden handle, broomcorn (for the sweeping end), a nail, and wire.
Magickally, round brooms are emblematic of the moon and its energies, as well as of women, water, and the earth itself.
In Ireland, the besom was sometimes called a "Faery's horse." Today, "jumping the broom" has become a traditional part of Wiccan handfastings, symbolizing the transition from the maiden phase of life to the mother. Among descendents of the Old Europeans there was a lovely custom: the bride prior to her church wedding was given a wreath-like crown made of eggs. Then old folk songs were sung to her by the elder women of her clan. In more recent times, the songs would tell of the trials and tribulations of being a woman; but there can be little doubt that in earlier times, the songs revealed the wonders of "women's mysteries," and undoubtedly much ancient magick. Then when the songs had all been sung, the crown of eggs was removed from the bride's head and she was handed that sacred symbol of womanhood, the broom. To those not of the Craft, it might be seen as a symbol of drudgery, but for those to whom the ancient mysteries had truly been revealed, it is one of the most potent magickal symbols of all.
The kitchen witch will normally have two brooms on hand, one for the everyday chore of sweeping floors and one for magickal use. If possible, use only brooms made of natural materials, whether flat or round in shape, and forgo the plastic and synthetic fibres. I have a flat corn broom with a wooden handle for everyday sweeping and a round magickal broom.
Broom Goddesses

In China, the broom goddess is Sao Ch'ing Niang, or Sao Ch'ing Niang-Niang. Known as the Lady with the Broom, she lives on the broom star, Sao Chou, and presides over good weather. When rain continues too long, threatening crops, farmers cut out paper images of brooms and paste them on their doors or fences to bring clear weather and sunshine. These images invoke the Lady with the Broom to sweep away the foul weather.
In pre-Columbian Mexico, the Aztecs worshipped the witch-goddess Tlazolteotl, who was usually depicted carrying or riding a broom. In her rites, priests burned black incense and laid brooms made from rushes (symbolizing the goddess) across the fire. Owls, snakes, and the moon were also sacred to Tlazolteotl. The goddess was invoked to sweep away the worshippers' transgressions.
In Rome, Devera was a goddess who ruled over brooms used to purify temples in preparation for various worship services, sacrifices, and celebrations.
Broom Folklore

If a broom falls from your hands while you sweep, make a wish before retrieving it.
To bring rain, stand outside and swing a broom over your head in the air.
To safeguard your home against lightening strikes, cross a broom and a spade outside the main entrance to the house.
Placing a broom across any doorway allows your departed friends and family to speak to you if they so choose. As long as the broom remains in place, they can communicate freely.
To protect babies and children while they sleep, place a small broom underneath their pillows.
If nightmares are a problem, let a broom sweep them away. Hang one on the bedroom door to help you sleep peacefully.
Two brooms crossed and hung on a wall or nailed to a door guard the house, as does a broom placed on the ground before the door. The brooms are believed to disperse negative energies before they can bother you. You can also protect your home by taking two needles, making and equal-armed cross with them, and placing the cross inside broom. Then stand the broom behind a door.
Never move a broom from one house to another; it will bring the bad luck and dirt of your last residence into your new home. (This doesn't pertain to decorative brooms or those reserved solely for magickal use, only those actually used to sweep floors.) If, for some reason, you must move an ordinary broom, put it into the new house through an open window and the ill luck will be deterred.

Broom Magick

To Bless a New Broom
Before using your new broom for normal household sweeping, carve or write on its handle (the words running from the tip to the bristles on one side): "I sweep in money and luck." On the other side (with the words running away from the bristles) carve or write: "I sweep out evil and poverty." Visualize as you clean the floors, and you'll do just that.

Consecrating Your New Broom
Whether you make your besom in the traditional way, or purchase one that appeals to you, it is traditional to name your broom as you would a horse. Then when you have chosen a name, anoint it with oil as you would a candle and consecrate it with the following words:
Besom of birch and willow tied,
[or besom of straw with cord tied]
Be my companion and my guide.
On ashen shaft by moonlight pale
My spirit rides the windy gale
To magickal realms beyond both space and time.
To magickal lands my soul will sail.
In the company of the crone I'll ride
This besom of birch with willow tied
[or besom of straw with cord tied].
So do I consecrate this magickal tree.
As I will it, so mote it be!

For Protection While Sleeping
Lay a broom beneath the bed. Anoint the headboard or bedposts with a protective essential oil, such as sandalwood, rose geranium, rosemary, or frankincense. Then sprinkle a circle of salt around the bed (while you are inside the circle's perimeter), and you shall be guarded against all ill until morning. Sweep up the salt with the broom when you rise.

To Safeguard Your Bed
If you must be away from home for some time and want to return home to a safe, clean bed, tuck your magickal broom into it, laying the bristles on the pillow. Nothing will disturb a bed so guarded.

To End Tiresome Visits
If you have someone that stays too long and interferes with your life, try one of the following spells. None of them will harm visitors; they merely impel them to leave.
Place a broom upside down behind the door. If the guests still refuse to leave, stick a fork into the bristles of the inverted broom. Failing this, go into a room adjoining that which the guests are in, place the broom so that its handle points toward the offending visitors and intone the following:
Get thee hence beyond my door
For I am weary to the core.
Of course, you could just try the surest spell of all--ask them directly to leave!

To Purify Your Home
Before dawn, take a branch from any tree. Thank the tree for its gift and leave a coin or semiprecious stone at its base in payment. Tobacco is another traditional offering among Native Americans.
Next, obtain several brightly coloured flowers on long stalks. Tie these flowers to the branch to fashion a sort of broom, then sweep the floor in every room of the house, visualizing the flowers of the broom absorbing negativity as you work. Then, still before sunrise, leave the broom at a crossroads. Traditionally in the southwest United States and Mexico, this ritual is repeated at the first of each month

how to live a magickal life

HOW appropriate is THIS!? Very well put!

It is not sufficient to say you are a "witch" or to practice magick. You must also live as a witch.

Do not look for excuses for why you cannot follow the path. Accept responsibility for your failures as well as your successes.

Celebrate the phases of the Moon and the changing of seasons. Do so not because it is part of a ritual calendar, but rather because these acts keep you in tune with Nature and Spirit.

Honor Spirit or the Goddess, but recognize that the spirits of all entities in the Universe are equal.

All life is sacred; all acts are ritual. Your actions should reflect your own divinity and that of all beings.

Achieving balance with the Earth is essential for a magickal life.

Responsibility toward the environment and the Earth's inhabitants should be evident in the activities of your daily life.

Do not take more from the Earth than you need to live. We are mere visitors here; the Earth is eternal.

Wealth and fame are not necessary ingredients for a magickal life.

Know that the joy of life is a gift. Know it as a cat knows it, in his bones and blood.

Power is a sacred gift and must be used wisely and with humility. Pride in ones power will ultimately cause failure.

Power should never be used to prove your ability or in any form of competition with others.

Power should be used to create happiness, not sorrow.

Be certain of your intentions when performing any act of magick. Magick is neither good nor evil, positive nor negative. The intentions of the magician determine the path it will take.

Act always with honor and accept responsibility for your actions. It is honorable to protect your loved ones, but be willing to accept the consequences of your actions with honor as well.

Words are sacred, use them wisely.

There is honor in truth.

Your word is sacred. Others must know that they can depend on you absolutely.

Learn to forgive yourself and others.

Knowledge is the foundation of the Craft. Never believe that you know enough.

Teach those who truly wish to learn, but take care that you do not teach those who only wish to serve themselves or harm others.

Teach the Craft with pride, but not to enhance your own pride.

Recognize that even the least knowledgeable of students may offer you lessons you need.

Live your life in a way that is above reproach to the rest of the world. In doing so, you will bring honor to all witches.

Do not be drawn into the feelings of hate and anger expressed by others.

Be able to look into a mirror and be truly unafraid.

Goddess Magic

It is learning to open your awareness to the presence of Goddess in your life every day. It is making each day sacred. It is recognizing yourself as Goddess. It is honoring your work, home, relationships, and circumstances as gifts of the Mother. It is living each day with a deep and purposeful sense of connection.

Goddess Magic is about coming home to your deepest sense of self.

Ninth Wave is a year-long journey of spiritual opening and centering. Ninth Wave is not a spiritual or religious tradition – it is an eclectic, Goddess-focused approach that allows each Seeker to explore herself and her own relationship with Spirit. The purpose of this exploration is that the Seeker make meaningful changes in her life, and that her spiritual path and practice become the foundation of all that she does in the world.

There are specific lessons and tasks in the Ninth Wave, but there is truly no "wrong way" to proceed. There are many paths toward the goal of living a spiritually connected life, and Lunaea and the other priestesses serving as guides are also traveling such a path. Ninth Wave is not a "class" in which the teacher imparts a specific body of knowledge to the student, to be taken in as dogma. Nor is it something that you accomplish in order to say you've completed a certain course or training. Rather, it is an journey in which the goal is awareness, open-heartedness, and integrity in a meaningful, personal spiritual practice.
Here is a link to a review of the Ninth Wave program, written by Valzora Spriggs: Ninth Wave review
http://www.thesilverbranch.org/ninthwave/review.html
Here are a few comments from some Wave sisters upon completing their year's voyage of the Ninth Wave:

"Thank you for a most inspiring year. You were right...I am not the same person that I was a year ago. I loved every New Moon when the next lesson arrived. This year has been the most sacred, beautiful experience of my life. I have loved every moment of the Ninth Wave."

"Thank you so much for this past year. I have learned so much about myself: I have been able to take stock of what has been working in my life and what wasn't... I have learned to be much kinder to myself... My entire day has become a ritual and a form of worship. I see the workings of the Mother Goddess everywhere, outside of me and deep within me. I am ready to continue onward..."

"These months of journeying with the Goddess have held so many different experiences of tears, sadness, laughter and enlightenment. Most of all, it's opened my awareness to question myself more, and to know and believe in my heart that life is truly an adventure.... I have gone from a broken-hearted, scared woman to a stronger, happier lady in love with my solo journey."

"Thank you so much for following your heart-centered dream of creating this journey for women. I can truly see how some women become frightened of changes, of their growth, and in many cases the ripping away of the illusion of the life they had been living. I myself almost fell into the same fear-based void. I now feel like I've been anchored in place and can put my hand back and help others along the way."

"Thank you so much for the opportunity to partake in such a wonderful program. The information, the tasks and everything about your program is first rate. I have learned so much about myself, goddess and the journey..."

"It's been a full year, a fruitful year. A year of preparing the earth, seeding my intent. A year of growth and transformation and many lessons. You have guided me well, helped me find my path. And for this I am deeply grateful."

weave a wreath of ivy

Weave a Wreath of Ivy
Susan's Herb Snips
from Susan's Collection of Herbal Lore

For centuries, ivy has been associated with the celebration of
Christmas. While not as well known as mistletoe and holly, it has its
own special holiday significance. Its glossy evergreen leaves symbolized
the renewal of life and the promise of spring in deepest winter, and its
clinging nature suggested faithfulness. It was also an herb of
celebration, and Greek revelers fashioned coronets of ivy as a guard
against intoxication. Sinuous, clingy, and delightfully green, ivy makes
stunning holiday wreaths. Here are four suggestions:

The Advent Wreath, symbolizing the coming of light into the world,
usually consists of four candles mounted around an evergreen wreath,
with one larger candle in the center. Make your Advent Wreath from ivy,
by planting mature ivy plants ( purchased from the nursery ) in a
"sausage" made of a plastic bag inserted into a wire wreath form and
filled with potting mix. Cover with green sheet moss, place on a round
tray, and water. If you plant in early November, your wreath will be
lush by the first Sunday of Advent, when you light the first candle.

Wind small ivy circlets for use as napkin rings. You'll need one 10"
sprig for each ring. Spectacular with red napkins!

Wreathe ivy around your candles. Tuck in a few holly berries for
accents.

Make an ivy wreath for your wassail bowl, and enjoy the ancient symbolic
association. ( not guaranteed to prevent the wassailers from getting
tipsy, however! ).

The Ivie and Holly Berries are seen,
And Yule Log and Wassaile come round again.

i hope everyone like's this...
blessed be
Nevar

Amaunet

An Egyptian mother goddess, called the "Hidden One".

She is the personification of the life-bringing northern wind. She belongs to the Ogdoad of Hermopolis. Within this group of gods her consort is the god Amun. She is referred to as 'the mother who is father' and in this capacity she needs no husband. Amaunet was regarded as a tutelary deity of the Egyptian pharaohs and had a prominent part in their accession ceremonies. She is portrayed as a snake or a snake-head on which the crown of Lower Egypt rests.

an amulet

An amulet is a consecrated object used for protection, for good
fortune, luck, health, to attract, or to repel. It is a natural
object, as
opposed to a talisman, which, while used for much the same purpose,
is a
human-made object. C. Nelson Stewart (Man, Myth and Magic) likens a
talisman to a sword and an amulet to a shield, saying the former is
a
reinforcer while the latter is a protector. Certainly amulets are
primarily
preventive, while talismans are transmitters.
Although amulets are frequently made and used by Witches, they are
not
exclusively so. They and talismans are a part of the larger world of
magick and can be utilized by magicians who are not necessarily
Witches.
Amulets are basically natural objects --amber is an excellent
example--they may be modified by carving or inscribing, or used in
conjunction
with other amulets and/or talismans. Most users will consecrate an
amulet before using it, but others feel that the very essence of
the amulet
is that it is natural and therefore requires no consecration. An
example of these two schools of thought may be found in the
mandrake root.
The mandrake naturally grows in the shape of a human figure. For
this
reason it was thought to have great magickal properties, especially
to
heal and protect. Yet the more similar to human being the mandrake
appeared, the greater the magickal power it was believed to
possess. For this
reason it was permissible to carve the root to make it more lifelike
and more powerful.
Another example of an amulet is a stone with a hole through it, known
variously as a Witch Stone, a Goddess Stone, or a Hag Stone. This
may be
slipped onto a piece of cord or leather thong and worn around the
neck
for protection. Some would first cleanse the stone in salt and water
and hold it in the smoke of incense, at the same time requesting
from
the gods that it protect its wearer. This act of consecration made
the
stone amulet even more powerful.
In Africa, elephant hairs are commonly used as an amulet, as are
lion's
teeth or claws. Elephant hair is frequently woven into a bracelet,
for
ease of wearing. In Europe and America, a rabbit's foot is perhaps
the
most common amulet, worn or carried for good luck.
There is a doctrine of correspondences, or "doctrine of signatures,"
associated with amulets. This is a belief that there is a magickal
connection between things which look alike, and things that have at
one time
been connected but that are now separate. Consequently, a bear claw
might be carried to five its owner the strength and fearlessness of
a
bear, or a monkey's paw might be
carried to bestow agility. A hag stone might be thought to aid in
childbirth, because of its similarity to the female vagina. A piece
of iron
(a horseshoe nail, for example) might be believed to give its owner
strength.
Among Scottish Witches the acorn is a popular amulet, symbolizing
strength and protection. It may be carried in the pocket or a Witch
may make
a necklace of strung acorns. Plants, or plant parts such as seeds,
pieces of wood or nuts and berries are used universally as amulets.
A
four-leaf clover is a popular example.
The circumstances under which an amulet is found can have great
bearing
on its significance and importance. For example, if a climber found
a
feather at the foot of the mountain, it would behoove the finder to
carry the feather with him or her to the top of the mountain, since
the
feather symbolized the ability to rise. That particular feather
would be
a very potent amulet in that instance.
Certain items, although not natural in the sense of not having been
manufactured, may still be regard as amulets, rather than
talismans, based
on the circumstances in which they are found. For example, finding
an
old key at a time when one is wishing to gain access to something --
be
it a building, a new job, or even a marriage -- would be regarded as
fortuitous in that the key symbolizes access. The key should be
carried
or worn until the goal is achieved.
blessed be
Frank

The Wytch's Charge
Hear now the words of the Wytches,
The secrets we hid in the night,
When dark was our destiny's pathway,
That now we bring forth into the light.

Mysterious Water and Fire,
The Earth and the far-reaching Air,
By hidden quintessence we know them,
And will keep silent and dare.
The birth and rebirth of all nature,
The passing of winter and spring,
We share with the life universal,
Rejoice in the magickal ring.

Four times in the year the Great Sabbat
Returns, and the Wytches are seen
At Lammas and Candlemas dancing,
On May Eve and old Hallowe'en.
And when day time and night time are equal,
When sun is at greatest and least,
The four lesser Sabbats are summoned,
Again Wytches gather in feast.

Thirteen silver Moons in a year are,
Thirteen is the coven's array.
Thirteen times at Esbat make merry,
For each golden year and a day.

The power was passed down the ages,
Each time between woman and man,
Each century unto the other,
Ere time and ages began.
When drawn is the magical circle,
By sword or athame of power,
Its compass between the two worlds lies
In the land of shades that hour.
This world has no right to know it,
And the world beyond will tell naught.
The oldest of gods are invoked there,
The Great Work of Magick is wrought.

For two are the mystical pillars,
That stand at the gate of the shrine,
And two are the power of nature,
The forms and the forces of the divine.
The dark and the light in succession,
The opposites each unto each,
Shown forth as a God and a Goddess:
This did our ancestors teach.

By night he's the Wild Wind's Rider,
The Horned One, the Lord of the Shades.
By day he's the King of the Woodland,
The dweller in green forest glades.

The bright silver lady of midnight,
The crone who weaves spells in the dark.
She is youthful or old as she pleases,
She sails the torn clouds in her barque,

The master and mistress of magic,
They dwell in the deeps of the mind,
Immortal and ever renewing,
With power to free or to bind.

So drink the good wine to the Old Gods,
And dance and make love in their praise,
Till the Summerland shall receive us
In peace at the end of our days.
And Do What Thou Wilt
Shall be the challenge,
So be it in love that harms none,
For this is the only commandment,
By magick of old, be it done!

Eight words the Wytch's Creed fulfill:
It if Harms None, Do What Thou Will!

The Cat's Paws
(Or...Kitty Knows Best)

Leave a door slightly ajar, think carefully about a question that you want answered (yes or no answer) and then call the cat inside. If kitty comes inside the door with her right forepaw crossing the threshold first, then the answer to your question is 'Yes'. If it is the left paw that appears first, then the answer is 'No'.
The Ring
Attach a length of black cotton thread to a gold wedding band. Take the thread between the index finger and thumb of your left hand, and suspend the ring over a tumbler of water. Let go of the thread, and see how the ring falls.:
If the ring touches the right side of the glass, then the answer is 'yes'
If it touches the left side, the answer is 'no'
If the ring touches the glass to the front or back as you are sat watching it, then the Oracle is refusing an answer, and you must try again after twenty four hours have passed.

Fire and Paper
Write your question or wish on a blank piece of paper, and place it face down on a fireproof surface ~ perhaps in an incense burner, or on a tin plate. Light the paper with a match to the front left hand corner as you sit in front of it.
If all the paper is consumed by the flames, and nothing is left, then the reply is that you will be happy, and your wish will be granted.
If there is some paper left, and there can still be seen a small part of your writing, then the wish will come true ~ but not for some time.
If the paper has hardly burnt at all, and most of your wish can still be seen written, then you will not get everything you want.
If the words are totally intact, untouched by flame, then your wish will come true very soon.

Thirteen Papers
Write a different wish (in pencil) on thirteen separate pieces of greaseproof paper. Place the slips of paper unfolded in the bottom of a bowl. Pour water over them, and the reply to the question on the first piece of paper that rises to the surface is 'yes'.

Clever Seedlings
Choose five seeds that you know you can grow into plants ~ the same type of plant seed, and try to make sure they all look very much alike. Plant each one in a separate pot, labelling that pot with an event that will happen...five different events. Place them where they will all have the same nourishment, and sunshine. The order in which they grow will be the order in which the events happen.

Water and Ripples
Think carefully on your question, and watch the water as you drop a pebble into a bowl of water. Count the ripples ~ if the number is odd, then your wish is answered with a 'yes'. If the ripples add up to an even number, then the answer is 'no'.

It IS All Black~and~White
Take two squares of paper ~ one black and one white. Go to a high window (but not so high that you can't see the ground). Throw the squares from the window whilst thinking carefully on your question.
If the black square reaches the ground first, then the reply is 'no', but if the white square flutters down and reaches the ground first, then the answer is 'yes'.

a~PEEL~ing Answers
Peel an apple, keeping the peel as intact as possible. When finished, throw the peel over your left shoulder whilst thinking on a question. When the peel falls on the floor, note its shape:
If it looks like a 'O' or 'U' shape, then the answer is negative ~ any other shape is a positive.
blessed be

“…Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle,
every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming
insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people. We know the sap
which courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and its part of us.
The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle,
these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the juices in the meadow, the body
heat of the pony, and man, all belong to the same family. The shining water
that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our
ancestors. Each ghostly reflection in the clear water of the lakes tells of
events and memories in the life of my people. The water’s murmur is the voice
of my father’s father. The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst.
They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give to the rivers the
kindness you would give any children. So you must give to the rivers the
kindness you would give any brother . Remember that the air is precious to us,
that the air shares its spirit with all the life it supports. The wind that
gave our grandfather his first breath also receives his last sigh. The wind
also gives our children the spirit of life . Will you teach your children what
we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the
earth, befalls all the sons of the earth. This we know: the earth does not
belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the
blood which unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a
strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.”
Chief Seattle, 1854

Invocation of the Crone

Invocation of the Crone

Behold the Crone…

Dancer of Time

Completion of the Sacred Cycle

She Who is Wisdom

Beloved, respected and feared

Horned as Grandmother, Ancestress and Hag

In the end – there is beginning,

Death brings Birth, Life renews through Her

Behold the Crone, Dancer of Time

Mother of worlds, Maiden of re-birth,

Child of the next generation

Dancer through Time

She Who cuts the cords…Of life and death,

Grandmother of all

The Crone comes…

Silently, Powerfully, relentlessly

Crossing space and time,

Holding the threads of life and death,

Mistress of endings and beginnings

Speaking through elders

I am the Crone…

The Grandmothers…The Wisdom of Age…

I am Hecate, I am Kali, I am the Eternal One

I cross space and time,

Holding the threads of life and death,

Mistress of endings and beginnings

I am completion of the Cycle

Maiden…Mother…Crone…

I have come as the Goddess,

And in me…all life renews

All things are possible

The Crone comes dancing

Silently,

Powerfully,

Relentlessly,

To ALL.
