Was wondering if anyone else in Calontir was interested or raising silkworms. Mainly the Bombyx Mori.

Sun, June 25, 2006 - 5:06 PMyou start with silkworm eggs, when they hatch you feed them mullberry leaves untill they are about 4 weeks old, then they spin cocoons, after 2 weeks the worms have turned into moths and emerge to mate, lay eggs and it starts all over again. -

Sun, June 25, 2006 - 5:20 PMCleaning their enclosure is a definite must... I've only read about the care and raising of silk worms, but their feces can kill them... and it stinks... (who's doesn't.) -

Re: Sericulture
Sun, June 25, 2006 - 5:34 PMyou have to keep their space clean, that goes for any creature, I just had over 400 spin and I didn't notice any bad smell from my bombyx worms. I cleaned their box once a day. I had them on plastic canvas and the frass just dropped through the holes. All I had to do was dump it out. The eggs hatched on May 19 and the first spinner was on June 12. By June 18 they had all spun. Today (June 25) the first moth emerged. -

Re: Sericulture
Wed, June 28, 2006 - 5:49 PMThis sounds awsome. How often will they repeat the cycle per year? What temperature do they prefer? Is the silk easy to work with once the moth comes out?
What fun... please keep us updated on this, it sounds fantastic!!!
