The state of bardery....

Hallo,

I'm writing looking for input on general views of the state of bardery in Calontir. I figure this tribe is a good place to do so because the membership numbers promise a volume of replies that I can actually read. Heh.

Just so you know, I'm deputy to the Dean of the Bardic College. My wife and I share the role ala Master Blaster of Mad Max fame--she does lots of talking and I sit on people. Great way to run a country!

Anyway, what do you think of the state of bardic activity in Calontir currently? What would you like to see out of the bardic community?

Those wishing privacy are welcome to send responses directly to me. Nobody has to know what goes on in Fight Club...oops, I said too much!

In all honesty bardic stuff is not my cup of tea. I'm into Middle eastern stuff. I do enjoy good Middle Eastern stories. As long as it's interesting and not too long. Bardic stuff should be mixed up with other forms of entertainment. I get bored hearing story after story or song after song. I like it when it's mixed up with other stuff and possibly has some sort of audience participation. I don't like continuous dancing either. It's nice to have a break and have someone tell a good story. Then get back to dancing or some other form of entertainment. That's my two cents worth.

Well if it helps i have one middle eastern type story I plan on telling once or twice at Lillies. I hope to have more so that way we can mix things up this war.

Well, that's just it--bardic arts are not limited to only western European cultures. Entertainers are entertainers regardless of culture and I'm thinking all forms should be included under the rubric of "bardic arts." I'm looking to find out what folks would like to see included. I'd like to see jugglers and tumblers and dancers and musicians of every stripe and storytellers of all kinds.

        Hmmm...
I never thought of Bards as being anything than the typical, Mariam-Webster "Poet, Singer" type of thing.
If you are talking about entertainment in general, then, HECK!
        that's different..
I loved watching Clan Tinker's street shows at Pennsic. The faux wrestling, the strange musicians, the creepy exotic dancer...
How cool would it be to have a bardic encampment composed of ALL kinds of performers!
I am imagining a circus atmosphere.
Maybe different artists would eventually, by sheer proximity, end up combining and complimenting each other's art forms and create some cool aliances.
        Musicians +dancers+singers+jugglers+drummers+poi spinners+acrobats + whatever...
More combos means more potential for some good entertainment.
        Weeee!

Gosh. I am not much about bardic stuff either, except that, don't shoot me, I LOVE the Eric/Fer/Drx show.
Mostly because it's a bardic PARTY, and I don't have to be quiet. God knows it's physically impossible for me to be quiet.I can't even begin to think about sitting through a story.
What drives me away from bardic circles of the serious type are songs about savage daughters, magic, "the goddess" unicorns, fiery maidens... anything that sounds like Lorenna Mckennit would have written it if she'd have thought of it.
It would be easier for me to enjoy bardic stuff if the songs just sounded a little more medieval - sort of on the Twa Corbie or Agincour Carole line.

I was at one bellyDance/bardic circle, and I dug it. Would like to see more of that too!

I think there's a big difference between Calontir singing and bardic arts. Seems to me that Calontir singing encourages more group participation while bardic arts is less audience participation, more listening to the performer. Each has its place, but generally its difficult to blend the two together. They group dynamic has to be JUST right for it to work.

After living in Calontir, Atenveldt, Artemisia, and currently Midrelms, I find that the thing I miss MOST about Calontir is the bardic activity. When I lived there, and when I visit, that's one of the highlights for me. Definitely a strong point of your great kingdom.

So at this little event (Melees and Mayhem) the Middle Eastern and the Calontiri style bardic shared a campfire... I think it worked. There was a pretty good give and take. I hope in the future it can happen again. I have always hated having to choose between two things I love to do. After my knee surgery I have chosen the singing over the Middle Eastern and I have missed it terribly.

You can stay in touch with the dancing via other tribes, ya know. I'll recommend Floating Hafla for local stuff. Layla (hi, boss!) still teaches at populace once a month (and when I'm around I figure to show up and play during those classes).

It's my dream to unite all of the entertainers in the kingdom into one large community with lots of smaller activity groups and make the Calontiri entertainment scene the envy of the Known World. A small dream, that....
