I figure this is a good place to ask what sort of instruction folks want to see 'round the kingdom when it comes to drumming (and ensembles involving drumming). What, exactly, do you want instruction on? What instruments? More techniques? More musical training?
Nakano's here, Brayden should be along soon (I invited her), I'm here--and any other instructor I can find in the kingdom will be invited, too. This provides a good place to let us know what you're looking for with your drumming.
For reference, Brayden teaches beginners the basics and gives insight about drumming from a dancer's view. Nakano, of course, teaches all of us mid-eastern hand drumming at any level. I teach orchestral and rudimental stick drumming, and beginning/intermediate mid-eastern hand drumming (though I'm very nontraditional in style).
So, come one, come all! Speak out about what sort of instruction you seek!

Re: What teaching do you want?
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 1:09 PMHaving drummed at a basic level at many drum circles at Pennsic, Lilies and smaller events, I find that what I need most is a regular outlet for drumming. I'm not so interested in being a soloist, so much as being a part of a good regular drumming group. I've only done dumbek for ME rythms, but love the sound of more African drums.
What skills I do have as a drummer tend to atrophy between events. Mundane/SCA obligations are not so much that I could not fit a good regular drum practice into my available time, but I find little enjoyment when I am the only drummer....I get bored.
Now, I'm not so confident in what skills I used to have. Wish I could have taken in Nakano's classes this year at Lilies, or even participated in some circles at parties. Unfortunately it just didn't seem to be in the cards for me. No matter how many reminders I gave myself that I needed to take my drum to Lilies it didn't make it.
Ok...enough whining.
Basically, I just would like more regular reinforcement of what skills I have and the ability to participate in the group drumming thing more often than just at events.

Re: What teaching do you want?
Sat, July 29, 2006 - 7:29 PMI'm planning on taking a drum or two to any event I attend so I can get in some drumming. I'll also be
up for some classes, too. I just need to know what sort of classes folks are looking for.
I'm putting together a course of study that I'd like to polish in actual use, so if folks indicate that's the
the sort of classes they're looking for, I'll put together the class materials and try to get space for
playing. I just don't want to prepare for an introductory class if everybody who shows up at the event
is prepared for something more advanced.
So, the classes on drilling rhythms and variations so more folks can get conversant with them and we
can have greater variation in circles?
Classes on ensemble playing and skills, with lots of drill work involving on trading the lead and such?
Classes on developing good practice routines and exercises?
What are folks looking for?

Re: What teaching do you want?
Sat, September 23, 2006 - 1:17 PMI would like to re-learn the basic ME rhythms to begin with... and I would LOVE to learn how to do more than just a basic rhythm. I wanna know how to embelish... and so far I just can't. I guess that's enough to start with for me. But like you mentioned in another post bodhran would be good as well... -

Re: What teaching do you want?
Sun, September 24, 2006 - 6:44 AMWell, come to class on Sundays...:-) There's a whole spectrum of development of playing, beginning with developing technique, working up through basic rhythms, and then into simple filling and on to embellishment of every sort--working from playing base to lead. We can get you materials to work on by yourself, certainly, though you'll need to find playing time with practiced ensemble players at some point to develop ensemble playing skills.
How many events can you make it to? I'm plan on getting to as many events as I can to teach, so if making it to class here doesn't work, you can still get instruction at events. And ya know, if ya moved closer, it'd be a whole lot easier!
