Drumming and Singing

It would please Us to see a cooperative effort between the drummers and bards of Calontir during Our upcoming reign. There have been fireside circles where drummers played and dancers danced, and then the bards sang, successfully taking turns. There is no valid reason that drummers, dancers and bards cannot all enjoy the same party. Learn to take turns.

There are songs that the Calon bards sing that plead for percussive background. Last Pennsic provided an opportunity for me to play doumbek with Sir Eric on his bazooki, and Sir Valdemar on his guitar and the voices of Calontir all together. It was fantastic. There should be more of it. Mind you, this can't be in the context of a loud drum circle; merely background accompaniment, softly keeping the beat.

Unto the drumming community of Calontir, this is a request from the Heirs to seek opportunity to join forces with the bardic community and make merriment even better! It can be done, with skill and grace.

For those wanting some ME melodies to play, I've some available and will pick up more as needed. I can provide guidance on ME-style performance or arrange for western-style performance (some harmony).

For those wanting to perform period songs with period arrangements, I'm familiar with strict counterpoint and can arrange pieces in period style. Heck, if you're wanting a period melody arranged with modern harmony, I'm conversant with that, too.

For those wanting to play the smaller and quieter hand drums (riq, def, etc.), I can provide instruction.

Qualifications, for those interested: percussionist, 33 years; music education studies, including brasswind, woodwind, percussion pedagogy; composer and arranger, multiple genres; currently music arranger, show designer, percussion caption head for Prairie Sound Drum & Bugle Corps; private instructor. I don't make it to many events these days, so contact me via email for arrangements and such.

Really, what We are looking for is everyone to figure out how to hang out and revel together, play nice, be respectful and take turns...We don't really need anything new to be developed, just a different way of looking at the fire at a revel. Drummers and dancers tend to take over completely...which is great, except that it leaves out an entire group of people: the singers. We want to see revelry that can allow for a couple of songs with drummers and dancers, and then a couple of songs from the bards. It can be done...

It can be done, I have seen it. In all reality, I think a break between both is great. Yes both get to play, but both get to rest too, or get up and get a drink, visit the bush, flirt with that new boy or girl, hey whatever.

Forgive me, but I think your missing TAFL's point. Your asking for everyone to come together and play as one. Sometimes this can only be done if it's rehearsed. Some drummers don't know they are loud and some singers don't know rhythm. You mentioned you really didn't want anything new to be developed, but that's exactly what your requesting. Everyone to play as one. That's something new. And it has to be developed.

TAFL was just indicating that he's willing to assist those who want assistance. He offered his expertise in helping those who want to polish what they already have.

At least, that's what I read.

No, I'm really not asking for that. If I gave that impression, then I have failed to communicate My wishes clearly. I'm asking that everyone learn to play nice and take turns. I have specifically said that the drumming/dancing could take a turn, and then the bards could sing a couple of songs. This would not be the typical sit around the fire and play until your fingers are numb circle. It would be: play a couple of songs...then listen and try to learn the words to a couple of the Calontir bardic songs...then play some more drums...then hear some more singing. We made it happen once at a Carlsby event, and it was fantastic!

There are a couple of bardic songs that could could be easily played along with...by a small group of drummers willing to play their part in the song, and not "take it over." It would likely have to be the more skilled/experienced drummers who can pick up intuitively on the rhythm of the songs...but for sure most drummers would need to stop and let people sing. You can't possible sing a song on top of a drum circle!

I am not asking for a performance piece with everyone playing together. In fact, please don't try that! I am asking that drumming/dancing and bardic be able to share a fire, and let everyone have their turn. In My experience, the vast majority of the time, there are drums at one place and songs another and they can't seem to get along. In fact, they usually both complain about the other. I happen to like both, do both, and want to have them both happen at the same party. Trust Me...it'll work.

Does this make sense now? What I am asking for? I will do what I can to facilitate this happening.

It sounds interesting... I think we'd need a "Master of Ceremonies" for the first few or so... you know, to dole out the "who's-next" and "wait-your-turn"... *grin*

              Ahh....yes...That's where I came in...

I really want to be the King who gets to sit at the fire and call for dancing girls....then A song, and so on :)

It'll be fun for everyone! We need to play a good three rhythm sets, you know:

the shifti to baladi ending with ayuub sort of sets that get the dancers out there, warm them up, let them get a good dance on, and play it out fast then end it sort of sets...

*Insert a few songs by the bards around the fire here*

and the jump in with sayiidi mix it up with maqsum and end with a masmoudi sort of sets...

*insert a story or some songs or some other bardic entertainment here*

Three rhythms with good transitions, nice variety, and a smooth finish - either a gradual fade out, or a counted out ending.

I don't want to "lead" the drum circle, but I'll certainly play along, and I have a clear idea in my head about the timing of this endeavor. I really think this can be a fantastic time at the party for everyone involved, and I know that it takes some work to make it happen. It'll really help that we are having this conversation now, here. I will talk to the bardic community as well and see what we can work out.

Hey dancers, how long should a "set" of drum rhythms be before it's time for a break?

It is always a great addition to have melody instruments along as well. If you can play melody, bring it out! Flutes, strings, chanters....hurdy gurdy....whatever, let's have a variety of music available, and let everyone get their chance to shine :) We know the TALENT is there!

I think that this is sort of a part of The Dream for me, and I hope that it can provide enhancement for everyone involved, musicians, dancers, singers, storytellers, and revelers of all kinds...

You will hear no more from me about this. Simply know that it is something that I intend to make happen, and if you want, please share joy in it with. Talk about it if you want. Practice it if you want. Attempt to make it happen at events if you can. I believe that it can truly serve to enhance the Realm of Calontir musically.

                We shall see...

Thank you all for taking the time to read my thoughts and participate in the discussion. See ya 'round the fire!
