Why is she a lightning rod for contoversy?

I saw a piece on Camille a few years ago on 60 minutes and she had these two big gay bodyguards on stage where she was speaking. I don't remember WHAT she said, only that I thought she was absolutely totally cool. Then I hated myself cause I forgot to write her name down. I'm so happy that not only have I rediscovered her but there's all sorts of people who can fill me in about her now.

So I guess my first question is "Why is she such a lightning rod for controversy?" (I'm assuming that because of what I remember with the bodyguard thing) Did she piss-off men, women, or both? No need for huge explanations, a paragraph and a link will be great. Thanks!

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!

I grew up reading her books. My brothers kept telling me she was really controversial,
but as long as they kept buying me the books I felt like there was a brave woman out there who could and would "call it like it is".

Great! What's a good book of hers to start with? Thanks.

Pick up a copy of Sex, Art, and American Culture. It's a collection of essays. You can jump around if you want to the ones that pique your interest and skim the others. The most telling essay is the cancelled preface to Sexual Personea. It lays out the foundation of her worldview and will help you understand everything else you ever read by her. If, after reading this book, you find yourself wanting more, pick up Sexual Personae and get ready for an earful.
