the birds

Was watching tv tonight, something I rarely do, and what should be on but Alfred Hitchcock's film, The Birds. Cool. CP wrote an entire book about this film for the BFI film classics series. If you haven't seen this movie, it's definitely worth a look. This is what CP had to say about the character Melanie, played by Tippi Hendren. She is discussing a scene in which Melanie is driving an Aston-Martin convertible:

"We must note the agressive pleasure with which Melanie deftly accelerates through the curves at top speed with the wind hitting her face and rippling the gauzy chiffon scarf around her hair... But Melanie Daniels is free as a bird: she rides alone, amused by her own meddlesome thoughts and plans. Tippi Hendren is terrific as she shifts gears and rests her fawn-gloved hands on the steering wheel. What could be more representative of modern female liberation than an elegantly dressed woman gunning a roadster through the open countryside?"

    I really enjoyed that description CP makes on `Melanie`!
    (grin, grin)

    I have seen the film a few times now over the years & obviously Alfred Hitchcock was adored by the viewing public over her, but never read CP`s book about it. I must put it on my xmas wish-list.

    You know it so evokes my own personal memories that whole description does, which I had never really thought about.

    I left prostitution for a few years....to experience something different!
    I did`nt waste my time & within 2 years had started my own created job! Setting up an agency for the homeless & street people with goverment quango funding. No mean feat from my background. So I was so pleased with this achievement, nobody knew more than me what this meant!
    So I bought a MG Midget (white) & drove via feery to france & travelled on my own, across it. Visiting friends of friends who were expat`s!
    Wind in my air, down the river Loire, past the chateau`s, stopping for a coffee here & there. To meet people I have enevr met before. During the season of the mushrooms.
    What bliss, what excitement, what utter decadence!

    That was my gift to myself. For that moment was good! (grin)

      Oh, I nearly forgot...
      the roof was down, I wore the mandatory headwear, a scarf! The longer the better....& it goes without saying the sunglasses & red lippy! (bigger gin)

        i engaged in oval track auto racing for a short time. not as elegant as speeding around in a convertible, what with the helmet and mud and all, but liberating fun nevertheless. aloha :}

          Tippi Hedren was at the Castro theatre in San Francisco last year and I got her to sign Camile Paglia's BFI book "The Birds". She was so sweet and drew little birds on it with with the caption "With fear...Tippi Hedren". She was wearing the famed Gumps broach that Hitch bought for her.

            How wonderful...& to get her to sign CP`s book..impressed!
            Oh as an addition to my xmas wish list & CP`s book...I did get one..The Sexual Personnae-& its fascinated me so much that when I refer to certain passages especially CP`s views on the feminine & masculine primal issues in the beginning of the book...I always suddenly become unpopular! He, he....but thats ok, a prostitute with opinions never is popular!!
            Oh, by the way have any of you read it? or part of it as its a huge book to digest in one swoop.
