Hey All ,

If you're reading this it means you have a sweet spot for Camp Beaverton and all it stands for - an awesome space for our community on the playa.

With dues so far we have reached our goal for infrastructure (dome, truck rental, storage, shower and kitchen) but we also want to be prepared for the hundreds of women who plan to visit the camp and participate in our events, workshops and play parties. We still need to raise a few hundred dollars to cover safe sex supplies, batteries for our fun toys and alcohol for our social parties, plus the supplies to make sure we're visible on the playa (flags and lighting at night).

We're asking for donations towards our cause to ensure being fully prepared to WELCOME QUEER WOMYN TO THE PLAYA AND ROCK THEIR WORLDS!!!!
If you can, please donate to our camp via paypal. There's a donate button on our main website - http://www.campbeaverton.org/site

Also, PLEASE pass on this info to your friends and family! It's a whole community effort to make this year especially awesome!

This camp is so crucial to the Burningman community because a safe, supportive, and healthy space for the women loving women is like finding a needle in a haystack. We are working very hard to ensure visibility/awareness/education/ and ENTERTAINMENT to all women on the playa!!!

Thanks so much, and any help would be much appreciated.
Dominique

Hey all!

It has been very quiet, but we are now at the burnal equinox.... 6 months left! So i think it's time to start planning... and I think the first thing to plan is how we're going to plan. I think Tribe sucks... I think the forums are difficult to follow and Tribe is often down or very slow... So... I have a couple of ideas:

google groups
+ It's decent... allows for sharing of documents, calendar, etc...
- Conversation isn't very secure. This is true of Tribes also...

facebook group
+ Also pretty decent.
+ Most of us are already on facebook... so easy to handle
- Some may not want their family or colleagues to know about their Beaverton / burningMan alter egos...
- Not secure, private.

private forum
+ private.... can avoid being googlable.
+ Pretty good forums easily configurable
- A bit of work to get it set up (by me probably... and any other techies who want to get involved?)
- probably not as simple to get calendars, etc integrated, but we could use a combination of this and google groups/docs.

I've started working on a web project anyway, and it'll be fun for me to make something for the Beavers.

but... to get started... I don't have anyone's information... i figure we'll start with a googlegroup and take it from there. I am cariserene at gmail dot com Add me (let me know who you are, or I might deny the invite)

I'm also on Facebook. i think a simple search of "Cari Amsterdam" will find me. I'm wearing a pirate hat. :D

I hope to hear from you!

Freedomcommunity New Year's CELEBRATION

For those Beavers that have attended Burning Man in the past two years, you should be well-acquainted with FreedomCommunity. This year FreedomCommunity will be getting together for New Year's. I'm planning the whole she-bang, and I would love for Beavers to come!

Read below for all the details:

Let's celebrate the New Year by honoring our relationships, giving ourselves permission to relax and enjoy ourselves, and celebrating our love for ourselves and one another.

You are invited to join us in Joshua Tree, CA for 6 days of music, conversation, hot tubbing, eating, drinking, dancing, laughing, cuddling, creating, designing, playing, frolicking, and anything else you want to do together.

This year, the theme is JOY. What gives you joy? What motivates you to seek it out? What about Freedomcommunity makes your soul sing and your heart beat a bit faster? How often do we let ourselves be the ebullient, joyous creature that giggles too loud and dances until our legs hurt? What's preventing us from allowing ourselves the free expression that brings us joy? What about your friends, family and lovers gives you joy? How can you create that feeling of joy and love in your daily life? Let's get together to play with our joy, try to create more of it for ourselves and our friends, and ring in the new year as joyously as we can.

Here are all the details:

Venue:
Joshua Tree is an easy 2 hour drive east of Los Angeles. The home is a compound rental property on a ranch about 10 minutes from the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. It's the high desert and it's gorgeous- one of the most magical places I've ever been (I spent the end of the world there, once).

The main house has a kitchen, living room, dining room, study, wifi, 2 bedrooms, two hottubs, a heated swimming pool, a firepit, a washer and dryer, a BBQ, an outdoor fireplace, and a beautiful, large patio. There's also has a rec house with a pool table, ping pong, more sleeping areas, and lots of floorspace. There's also a volleyball court, horseshoes, and tether ball.
As in years past, bringing a sleeping bag is a good idea, as we'll have people in the beds and on the floor. It is very private and very lovely.

The town of Joshua Tree is an artsy, desert community. There are some great Mom & Pop restaurants, neat shops, good bars, and wonderful people. The park is spectacular with amazing hiking, rock climbing, and sightseeing. The stargazing is insane. The park is great for a day hike or for backpacking for a couple of days. Winter weather is similar to Las Vegas and other desert areas- pleasant during the day, and fairly chilly at night. Camping is a possibility, though it can get pretty cold on winter nights. I've done it, but it's not the coziest.

Alternative housing is certainly an option. There are plenty of hotels and inns around Joshua Tree. If you want to participate without committing to sleeping at the house, feel free to do so.

The time:
This will be a 6 night rental. You can arrive starting on Monday, December 29th. Check out is Sunday, January 4th.

Cost:
The cost will be $90 per person for however long you intend on staying. Therefore, if you're in for the full week, you pay the same as if you're in for only one night. If you don't intend on sleeping at the house at all, please consider donating to support the costs of the rental. Any extra cash will be used for groceries and sundries. When you consider how much cash you'd drop at a bar on New Year's, this is a pretty sweet deal. After Thanksgiving, the cost goes up to $130 per person. I have to pay up front, so consider this an incentive to figure out your plans tout de suite. To reserve your spot, you can PayPal me the $93 (including $3 to cover the paypal fees) to my email address: Allison.moon@gmail.com. You can also mail me a check for $90. If you do this, please send me an email so I can be sure to expect it. **If you can pay more, please consider doing so. Even an extra $5 will be of great help. All the money will go to making this week spectacular**

Travel:
Flying in to LAX is your best bet to arrange for ground travel. You can also fly into Ontario, Glendale, or Palm Springs. All of these airports are easily accessible from LA. You are responsible for getting yourself to Joshua Tree, though I am available to help coordinate, should you need it.

Special Events:
If you have something you'd like to share, create, or ask for from the community, please let me know. I'll work with you to figure out the best way of making it happen. More notably, if you have something you'd like to see happen for New Year's Eve itself, let me know!

Space use:
I will do my best to divide the space in a reasonable way. I will be sure to create a sex-positive space, a sex-free space, plenty of cozy sleeping areas, and great places to get together to chat.

Food:
We will be providing groceries. If you enjoy cooking and would like to prepare a meal for the group, please let me know. You are sure to get much love for giving us such a wonderful gift.

Guests:
Guests are welcome. Everyone who commits to coming will get the same information. This is a rental, but I want to make sure it is treated with the respect and care we would give to a friend's home. Please think carefully about whom you'd like to bring to this event. I don't intend on capping the number of attendees, but please be mindful that sleeping on the floor is part of this event, as is sharing space with a lot of people with various sleep schedules and intentions of their own.

Minors:
Not without prior discussion. There is room for minors at the event, but times and places will have to be decided on beforehand such that all attendees may be aware well in advance. Contact me if you have any questions about this.

Questions and comments:
Please email me if you have any questions that aren't addressed here.

Interested? Great! You can do one of two things:
(1) Pay now and secure your spot. Easy-peasy. (2) Email me to let me know of your interest. If you can't pay now or are unwilling to commit, let me know so I can still maintain a count of interest. Let me address any concerns or questions for you.

******Finally, by paying for your reservation, these are the commitments you are agreeing to:*******

1) You are committing to being present at some point during the week, and, unless there is an emergency, you won't cancel on us.

2) You agree to treat the property with the respect and care you would give to the home of a friend or family member. This means cleaning up after yourself and doing your part to assure that the home stays in great condition.

3) You agree to treat the other guests with respect and appreciation as part of the community, regardless of time spent within freedomcommunity.

4) You are committing to treating yourself and the community with dignity. This means asking for what you want, being honest with yourself and others, and taking care of your needs.

5) You agree that "appropriate behavior" is a subjective term. You are in understanding that you cannot control others' choices, including that of drug use, sexuality, and sleep schedules.

6) You are committing to airing any pertinent concerns about the week with myself or another participant.

I am wildly enthusiastic about this week, and cannot wait to CELEBRATE with you all.

Email me at allison.moon(at)gmail.com with any questions.

I'll be scheduling clearing conversations with all attendees in the coming weeks.

spread the word: this halloween weekend (october 31 - november 2) will be jam-packed with freedomcommunity goodness in nyc. come play!

here's the schedule:

friday, october 31:
some kind of evening gathering of our bigass family. revelry and absurdity and giddiness at seeing all yer fine faces together again. possibly halloween parade. possibly house party. definitely voices raised in celebration and laughter. details coming soon. your suggestions welcome. further bulletins as events warrant.

saturday, november 1:
11 am - 7 pm SYMPOSIUM: on leadership, collaboration, and gettin' shit done. (this will be an advanced course--movers and shakers, big thinkers, and visionaries welcome. you don't need to be an old school fc player (or even be a declared member of freedomcommunity at all) to get something extraordinary out of this gathering, but this is NOT intended as an introduction to freedomcommunity. it's an assembly of conscious creators ready to hear sexy new ideas and dig in, all held under the banner of freedomcommunity. presentations will be made. discourse will be juicy. and we'll all be building upon the big questions of "what's next?" and "how do we want to get there?" together. formal description pending. the team putting this one together is totally, totally boss.)

THAT NIGHT (12 hours, of course): DEMONS: a freedomevent hosted by yours truly and currently at least one mystery cohost. a sickass night of evolution, exorcism, and destroyed limitations. guaranteed to be the best night of your life to date (and that's a promise you're responsible for keeping). theoretical demons guaranteed. real demons optional. read the separate invitation thread for further details.

sunday, november 2:
(late afternoon/once sleeping's occurred) a gathering of the good old warm fuzzies to round out the weekend and do a little basking before we all go our separate ways. again, further bulletins as these plans solidify.

ALL LOCATIONS ARE CURRENTLY TBD. FURTHER DETAILS WILL BE POSTED HERE (EXCEPT FOR DEMONS INFO).

POST HERE: tinyurl.com/4uh59w IF YOU'RE EXCITED/THINK YOU CAN TO COME.

EMAIL/TRIBE ME IF YOU WANT TO HELP THROW DOWN THIS WEEKEND.

Today I bought the bones of our fair beaver den! Brody the Magnificent will be transporting them to the playa with an arrival of Monday.

Sadly, the structure nearly tapped out all the funds I raised from the play party and yard sale. This means we need more help getting some basic stuff to the camp.

What do we need?

Pillows & Blankets
Safer Sex supplies (gloves especially!)
Lighting! (solar lights for outside, battery powered for inside!)
Liquor! (if everyone brings a bottle or two and a mixer, we're good to go!)

As you pack, please try and add some of this stuff to your load.

so, i bought the liquor and mixers for the dyke cocktail party, totaling $184.53. i opted out of providing beer on the menu as well to make sure i have enough cash to make it to the playa. we bought the largest size available of tequila, vodka, gin and rum, with smaller sizes of cherry brandy and harlequin, plus about a dozen different types of juice mixers, so depending on how many ladies show up (and how much they can drink in 3 hours) beaverton may be set on alcohol for the rest of the week...if not, at least there will be a lot of drunk, happy women running around our camp tuesday night.
i'm writing cause i've never bought a massive amount of anything on behalf of a group before, and am not sure how to go about seeking partial reimbursement. the party was my idea, so i'm willing to pay a quarter of the cost, but as much as i'd love to just have this be my gift to beaverton this year, i really can't afford to foot the whole bill to intoxicate all these beautiful ladies...as is i'll be pulling into the playa on fumes. i'm not sure if there's any money left from beaverton fundraising... even if there is, seems like the easiest option (rather than paypal or something) would be for everyone camping with beaverton to just chip in 10 or 20 bucks (depending on how many of us there are this year). i'm having to play the role of bill-collector here, which isn't nearly as much fun as party-mistress... so can we make it easy and say that i'll bring the receipts if everyone could bring a little cash to help me not eat the whole cost of the party?

also, while i have your attention, i'm in the process of thinking up party activities. how do people feel about naked twister?

Freedom Community Updates:
- The camp will be at 3:30 & Dart. Tell your friends!
- A fairly intense conversation has been happening over at FreedomCommunity Burns and on the FC Conference Calls regarding sex in the big "FreeDome." If you want to get in on the conversation, hop on over to the tribe and share your 2 cents!
- The FreedomCommunity Space is 250' x 250'. The layout has yet to be decided, but will be shared with us soon.
- Early arrival has yet to be determined

Shade Structure Updates:
- Beaver Brody has been doing monkey hut research for her own shade and will be sharing her pricing and materials info with me for our Beaver Dome purchase.
- Danna has possible transport, but I am looking for other arrangements just in case.
- Danna is donating her 10' x 10' shade structure for camp use as our "chill-out" space.

Fundraising Updates:
- Danna and I had a yard sale last weekend. We raised around $120 bucks. I'll be using this to purchase the shade structure materials, and any leftover I'll be using for solar lights and maybe decor and liquor.
- This weekend Reid and I threw a play party and raised a leetle bit of cash. So hopefully this will help pay for goodies, as well.

Event Updates:
- Three of Beaverton's events were submitted to the What Where When: Laura's Cocktail Hour, Queers & Beers- a Gender Talk, and the now-famous Strap-On-A-Thon. If you submitted an event independently, please let us know!
- There are a couple other "non-official" events planned- possible meals, a dodgeball game, and talent-show thingies.
- FreedomCommunity at large will also be hosting some events, including an academic symposium, a Thursday Night Football (which is, oversimplified, a party), and a couple of other thingies.

Missing Pieces:
- We need: a dodgeball of some kind and soft stuff for the domes. Please, when packing, throw an extra blanket or pillow in your vehicle to donate to the cause. It's a really easy way to get involved and will be MUCH appreciated. You can even grab a blanket from Goodwill for a buck, so you won't have to worry about your nice sheets getting dusty.

Requests for rides, help, or supplies:
- Laura would like to see the dome have some personality this year- something den like- a brown tarp, some signage, some logs for beaver-looking flair. If you'd like to help out, speak up! I'll be on the look-out for a tarp that might work with this vibe.
- Laura is going to be helping to supply the bar. Let her know if you can help out with fundraising or donations.

- Tanya and Jasmine will be flying into Reno and Oakland, respectively, a few days before the playa opens. This means they'll be looking for rides into the playa early and/or places to crash until the Burn starts. If you are located in the Bay or in Reno and can help them out, please let us know!

COMMITMENTS SO FAR!

These are the folks that have told us they are camping with us. If you are not on the list and are surely a Beaver this year, please let me know!

However, Freedom Community- our parent camp DOES. If you are camping with Beaverton, you must pay this fee.

This year's camp fee is $60 per person.

This does account for a significant kitchen budget, so you can expect some meals to be included in this fee.

You should pay this fee via PayPal to burningman@gypsyartist.org.

On August 15, the camp fee will jump up to $75, so it pays to get in early!

To camp with Freedomcommunity, you need to pay the camp fee, and participate in a Clarity Conversation. Read more about them here.

i personally would LOVE to volunteer to host/bartend a cocktail hour. i'd like it to be early in the week (tues/weds) to facilitate bringing together the playa lezzies so everyone can make friends to hang out with for the rest of the week. this would be more entertaining if someone sexy-costume friendly was willing to take this on with me (i'm thinking you, jasmine, tanya or allison)...i have in mind something classic yet playful and we can coordinate to match. it could go from 5-7ish or 6-8ish, and we can facilitate getting-to-know each other games, or maybe another round of spin-the-monkey? :)

if this sounds good and i have a co-volunteer, i'll go ahead and email marah and ask her to put me on the books for this.

This is a friendly reminder about our next conference call happening on Wednesday, July 9th!

Here are the details:

Date: Wednesday, July 09, 2008
Start Time: 9:00 PM Eastern Time / 6:00 PM Pacific Time
Dial-in Number: 1-309-946-5100 (Midwest)
Participant Access Code 18568

On the agenda:

* FreedomCommunity Update

*** NEW AGENDA ITEM: Before we get into mundane planning details, I'd like to open a dialogue to address our "Women's Only Space."
What does this mean to you? How can we uphold a commitment to be radically inclusive? What does this mean for non-women gender identities? How can our allies support us? **** This is a conversation that is important to start now, but will certainly continue onto the playa. The rest of our conference calls will probably be more detail/planning oriented, so I'd like to have this in our minds as we move forward.

* Commitees!
- Let's get the ball rolling! Start thinking about how you'd like to help! Do you like to throw parties? Have a knack for decorating? Like to build stuff? Do you make fabulous cocktails? We're going to create committees and figure out how to make all our fabulous playa dreams happen.

* Shade Structure
- Now's the time to get busy on research, materials, and cost analysis.

* Fundraising
- Share your ideas, make it happen. We need cash for shade structures/dome decor/sundries. How can you help?

* Open forum for needs, requests, ideas.

***Please repost!!!***

Scheduled for WEDNESDAY, JULY 9 6:30pm PST/ 9:30pm EST
Stay tuned for more info.

NOTES FROM CALL #1

Call Date: Wednesday, June 18th

Purpose of the call: Initiate brainstorming, ask questions about what we want, discuss some semantics.
We’re not asking for a commitment yet. Am asking that you start thinking about what you can bring to Beaverton and what it can give you.
On the agenda for this call:
1) A brief history of Camp Beaverton and what we'd like to create for this year's burn
•	Created last year as a sanctuary/gathering spot for queer women on the playa
•	This year: a chance to recreate and re-envision the camp however we’d like
•	What did you like about last year? Mentioned: Bus as a spot to chill with everyone each sundown, communal shill space, a visible place to consciously create our evening. The strong sense of unity. Powerful queer space. Intimate group.
•	What would you like to improve upon from last year? More integration with FC. Better shade structure. Better shared geography.
•	What would you like to SEE/DO/CREATE/EXPERIENCE? Performances, cocktail party, co-create events with other subsets (i.e. The Boysterous Knights) for FC and the playa at large, games (i.e. dodgeball), Beaver participation in other FC events including the academic symposium and “talent show.” Danna intends to do another session of her “Boobies Portrayed” project.

2) The role of Camp Beaverton within our parent camp of FreedomCommunity (http://tribes.tribe.net/freedomcommunityburns)
•	FreedomCommunity- Caryn gives brief history of FC on the playa. Burning for 5 years (?) Each year creates itself anew. visit the tribe for more information. Founding principle is that FC is what you make it. Setting clear intentions and living as powerfully into them as possible. – what EVER they are
	What tends to show up: having lots of fun, experimenting with personal identity, experimenting with community structure, commitment to community, powerful choices, etc.
o	Sharing infrastructure/ real estate- kitchen, evap pond, large dome, etc. Therefore, Beavers will be expected to help out.
o	In process of creation: stage, academic symposium, dedication to LNT
o	Fill out the survey once you’ve committed
o	Opportunities for leadership (i.e. “we are all leaders” thread on FCB)
•	What do we want to create for the whole community, allowing queer women to be part of a greater whole – again performances, events.
•	Part of Burning Man as whole- 10 principles: Radical Self-expression, Participation, Communal Effort, Radical Inclusion, etc.
o	Consider how you, as a beaver, can opt in to these principles.

3)	The Beaver Den and additional shade structures.
•	Last year’s beaver dome is no more, nor is the blue bus
•	Need at least one structure- consensus: two structures- one for chilling (gender neutral), one sex-pos space (for women only)
•	Caryn sings the praises of her monkey huts.
•	Suggestion for a beaver ambassador to investigate pricing, sizing and materials for two monkey huts over at the Shade Geeks tribe.
•	Need storage and transport. Danna suggests that her plans MAY allow for transport of materials to the playa.

4)	Fundraising
•	Anyone can fundraise.
o	Where we may need money:
	Shade structure/dome
	Décor/signage/lighting
	Support for fellow beavers in their creations

5)	Events and activities.
•	Stage- would you like to perform?
•	One suggestion- dodgeball game
•	Another suggestion- cocktail hour with the Boysterous Knights.
•	Strap-on a-thon. Again?
•	Want to teach a class?
•	Want to host a cocktail hour?

6) Leadership positions and ways to get involved
•	Decide what you want to do and make it happen
•	Host a fundraising party
•	Head up a committee (dome décor, newbie orientation, shade structure research, events, etc)
We are all very busy and have a lot of information to deal with. Therefore, I encourage everyone, once you’ve decided what you want to create/see/do to declare it strongly and loudly. Make sure it gets heard. Enlist the support of others if you need it.
7. Questions & Wrap Up

Last year was Camp Beaverton's inaugural Burn. It was wildly successful and this year we'd like to see it grow and thrive. Camp Beaverton is the playa's home for queer women and allies. If you'd like to learn more about last year's burn, check out our tribe. If you'd like to participate in THIS year's burn, read on!

I'm Allison- the orange-haired Camp Counselor from last year's burn. I'll be helping organize our pre-playa planning this year, starting with our Beaver Calls. If you haven't been checking in on Tribe.net lately, now is the time to do so. We've already started some lively discussions about our presence on the playa, our intentions for this year's burn, and semantics about fundraising and shade structures. Your opinions are invaluable, so please pop on over to tribes.tribe.net/campbeaverton to get in on the action. As soon as Tribe gets with the program, I'll be taking over as moderator for the tribe. In the meantime, feel free to continue to contact last year's moderator Reid or me on the site. Or you can email me directly at this addy.
Discussions for Camp Beaverton should kick into full gear starting in June. So, now is the time to start waking the Beavers up from their hibernation.

Please email your fellow Beavers who may not have been active on Tribe for a while. We'll be needing to do a roll call soon and start our clearing calls, planning calls, fundraising and brainstorming.

Also, if there are some super saavy, sexy, salacious, and sassy women who you think would like to camp with us, let them know to hit us up! This year is going to be a big one for us, as we build on the success from last year's burn.
If you are planning on camping with Camp Beaverton, be SURE to fill out the Freedomcommunity survey over on the FreedomCommunity Burns tribe. The Beavers are part of freedomcommunity again this year, so they'll need to know how many Beavers will be scurrying about.
So, Beavers, what do you want to see Beaverton have that we need funds to create? Two domes? Dodgeballs? Beavertails? Decorations for the dome?

My only thought is the domes, which I priced out on Sam's Club today. If we got all freaky- we're looking at close to $1500 for two structures. Or we can do two leetle ones and top out around $900. Anything else?

1. physical structure of beaver den

are we sticking with the small dome? i see a few flaws with this idea: first that it was too small and i anticipate that we will have more visitors this year. second that it took a while to build. third that it doesn't allow room for chill space...it's either a fuck party or a social space but can't be both.
the idea was brought up last year of getting a couple of costco carports. apparently they take about an hour to set up, are sturdy, and we could arrange them so that the first section is a chill/social space for people who want to just hang out or cuddle, with the back section available as an all-out girlee-porn-fest. because of the shape we could probably actually decorate/paint the thing to look like a dam, too. :)

2. internal social structure of beaver den

who will be allowed in this "women's only" space? i heard about an incident last year involving some trans folk that got a little sticky. my personal stance on this issue is that anyone who *identifies as a woman* should be allowed in the space, including m2f but excluding f2m. if push came to shove though i doubt i would ask an f2m to leave.

What I'd like to kick off right now is the following discussion: Who should moderate the tribe this year?

As much fun as it was being the moderator for the Camp Beaverton for Wayward Girls Tribe, and the huge honor of getting to help mid-wife Camp Beaverton from sparkling conception to dusty, on-the-playa reality last year, my term is up... It's time I hand over my She-Ra Princess of Power sword and my dildo of responsibility to another powerful and gifted soul.

Who do you think it should be?

Now, to be clear, I don't think the tribe moderator has to be in charge of the whole camp or whatnot, but I think Camp Beaverton -being a queer women's camp- would be better served by having a moderator who ain't got a bio-dick like me. Yep, it's just that plain and simple! The rest of what we need for this year's sojourn to the playa we can co-create together as we move forward.

So who wants to nominate themselves or nominate someone else? We don't have any Super Delegates to worry about, so don't be shy...

I look forward to hearing from you all!

is beaverton a part of freedomcommunity village in 2008? what do we want it to be?

i'm opening up this space for conversation because the idea's been kicked around a bunch without any real sense of resolution and the time is nigh for decision makin'. we've got maps to get on and funding to think about, as well as questions of camp interactions on the playa. here are my two cents:

it's my understanding that there may be some hesitation to affiliate with fc village because while both organizations have kickass intentions that have a certain amount of overlap, it might not be a good idea for the only (publicly declared) queer women's camp on the playa to be fit under the fc umbrella, in as much as you should not have to want to be in fc-village to be in beaverton, you should just want to be a part of beaverton. do i have this right?

the other thing to note is the benefits and challenges of participating in a village in general. we get infrastructure and support, but we also get some limitations.

if i do have this right, i think there's a lot of questioning to do about how we want to fit into fc village in terms of the relationship we create with the rest of the village, but we should definitely be a part of the it. here's my reasoning: last year people who weren't initially declared fc people came to beaverton and fell in love with freedomcommunity. people who came to beaverton and didn't want to be a part of fc in a big way after that (or even during the burn) also had that option and exercised it. and with the increased connection so many beavers feel to fc (and the fact that due to the nature of fc village and its "opt in to what you want and leave what you don't so long as you take on our (exceedingly meet-able, super easy) agreements" any beavers that don't want to "opt in" won't have to), it would be silly to make beavers choose between the beaver pride and fc pride that might pull them in separate directions.

i'd like to start the conversation here, and then talk about how and what we want to create within fc village if that's what we end up agreeing to. that's a far richer, more interesting conversation (and could benefit from outside pov, so maybe we could post that on the freedomcommunity burns tribe?), so let's start hacking through this one.

what do you think? camp in a village or just a camp by ourselves?

as many of y'all know, last year it took us two and a half days to set up freedom community village and another day to tear down, which was disappointing to several of us who'd wanted more play time on the playa. i've been communicating with marah and burningman 'officials' about getting an early arrivals pass for arriving to set up, roughly four days before the gates open. i'm trying to get together a crew of beavers to drive down with me and so i'm posting to see what other interest there is in this. don't panic...the plan would depend on about twenty people from different areas agreeing to go down early; 5 or 6 beavers wouldn't be responsible for single-handedly setting up the entire village.
the way i see it, it would be a great way to contribute to the village in a major way (when people start showing up monday, MOST of the major stuff like kitchen, grey-water, public space, etc would be ready and waiting for them to use!), a way to get some exercise before a week of heavy debauchery, a way to get an extra few days of drinking and bonding time in with the peeps closest to us, a way to be uber-butch, and a way to maximize our own play time on the playa. marah has also assured me that this means that the set up crew would NOT be responsible for tear down as well, which i know was frustrating to those of us who set up and also found ourselves tearing down. just imagine...playing ALL week and then we could...just...leave.

Happy Holidays to each one of you amazing people. Starting this camp, being a part of it's presence and impact on the playa and handing it off to the AMAZINGLY KICK ASS and HARD, HARD WORKING women who made Camp Beaverton for Wayward Girls their home at this year's Burn has been one of my life's great achievments, and I'm not kidding (although I must admit to being a bit gushy at the moment)... I want to recognize and send holiday love to everyone who lent a hand (or a thigh or a wrench or a dildo) to the creation of Camp Beaverton, and especially to everyone who camped with us. Camp Beaverton just couldn't have happedn without each of you. Go, Beavers!!!!

Big hugs and dust-covered smiles to each of you who rolled through camp, had a drink, shared a conversation, kissed a Beaver, blessed the Beaver Den with your energy, or helped spread the word that a Queer women's oasis had materialized at 7:30 and Intertidal... With out each of you, Camp Beaverton wouldn't have been able to do what it did. Community showed up and rocked da' house! Thank you.

From the flag pole proudly heralding our rainbow and Beaverton flags to the world, to the Big Blue Bus that we watched each sunset from, to the Strap-On-A-Thon's giggles and moans filling the night, to our coffee-clutches and sex ed classes and boobie portraits... Really: Thanks for the opportunity to stand along side each of you and mid-wife such an awesome camp into creation. You made my year and I look forward to seeing Camp Beaverton grow...
But then, I thought, the idea of not seeing all my friends' faces on my birthday would be like not getting kissed on New Year's- in other words- NOT AN OPTION.

So.

I am having a party.

It's going to work like this- another rooftop soiree at the penthouse. The only thing is- unlike my insane July 4th party- you, yes YOU have to bring something to drink or eat. That bag of tortilla chips just hanging out in your cabinet? Bring 'em. That bottle of Lambic you have for when your mom visits- bring that too. Clean out your cabinets so we can party. I'm not kidding folks- I am BR-OKE. So if you don't bring any liquor- you ain't drinkin any!

Okay- so you've got your bottle of Popov- when are you coming over?

Saturday, October 6th. 8pm (that's next weekend, y'all!)

PM or email me for the addy (allison.moon@gmail.com)

Call apt 502 when you get there and take the sketchy-ass elevator all the way up!

I supply the music and the kisses, you take care of the rest! It's DIY at its finest.

When I'm rich and powerful, I promise I'll take you out for brunch or something.
But in the meantime- POTLUCK!

Email for more details. Invite who you want. Wear comfy shoes, because there's a ladder involved.

my biggest concern was with the division of labor. last year i camped with just a couple of friends, and so i wasn't anticipating losing two days immediately to set-up, and losing much of sunday to tear-down. one thing i noticed was that the same people who were involved with the set up were the ones who were present and involved in tear-down, so i know i'm not the only person who had this experience. this frustrates me because, yeah, we all want to have fun... i'm a broke-ass social worker, and i spent a lot of money to get to the burn and ended up having my play-time and social-spiritual-recharge cut nearly in half. i think if we can come up with a fair and equal plan for the distribution of labor, everyone will be able to have a more thorough experience next year. either this, or we can apply to brc or whomever for an early-entry pass for set-up, and i would be more than happy to take a group of 4-7 ladies down a few days early, getting an extra couple of bonding days in while eliminating the need for others to chip in that way all together, and not cutting down on our actual week of play with the other happy 47,000. does anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions on this?
along these lines, we should start the conversation of what it is we want to contribute next year. rkane has already expressed an interest in being camp cook. audrey and i are both interested in being collaborative costumiers. what are everyone else's passions that they'd like to share with the camp?

i'd also like to talk about recruitment other than word-of-mouth. how do we make our presence better known next year to the lesbian community? perhaps we should start up that website...

Thanks to everyone who donated gifts, services, sweat equity, email lists, and word of mouth to our Online Auction. Thanks to those of you who bid, whether or not you "won." Thanks to my good friend Anthony Petrolonis, who donated ca$h. And thanks to Marcia, Dominique, and Diana for devising, implementing, and pulling off our NYC play party fundraiser, "The Beaver Stampede."
This is what we raised:
Play Party - $190

From our awesome friends as BMO... I got this because I'm registered as the contact person for Camp Beaverton. Thought you all might like to read this.

xxREiD

Dear Camps with Adult Activities,

This letter is being sent to you because you checked a box on our
questionnaire or otherwise alerted us of some activities that may
have consequences for you as the theme camp organizer, and us as the
infra-structure for Burning Man. If you are doing massage or are
playing with subject matter that is sexual or taboo you should be
aware of some information about Nevada and our event.

Burning Man has always been and is still radically inclusive.
Everyone is welcome. Many people's lives are changed by this one
principle alone. In order for this community to continue, each
individual and theme camp has a responsibility to ensure that it does
not endanger the survival of Burning Man. With this principle in
place, the responsibility to deal with unacceptable behaviors falls
more heavily on each individual's shoulders. Our message has always
been clearly that everyone is responsible for taking care of
themselves, and problem situations should first be attempted to be
handled by the immediate community itself.

The laws in Nevada are much more strict in the areas of nudity and
minors than some other states. In reality your theme camp is in as
much danger of a legal battle if something unfortunate were to happen
(or be perceived to have happened) as our event would be. Also, when
evaluating our Black Rock City citizens it is clear that not everyone
is prepared to handle extreme situations as well as others.
Compromised states of consciousness can mitigate good judgment.
Misunderstandings can easily occur causing severe ramifications for
the people involved, the person/people hosting that theme camp, or
for the Burning Man project. The worst scenario would involve
harassment or rape.

Please be conscious of the environment you are creating and be
prepared to manage that space. That means keeping your eyes wide
open and observing your theme camp closely. Creating an environment
where people are encouraged to let go of their normal inhibitions
could run the risk of creating a situation where someone may not
consent to everything that is happening. Intoxicated people may not
be able to control what is happening to them. A Black Rock Ranger
should be called immediately if an unwanted situation is in progress.
Our Black Rock Rangers are volunteers and are a part of our
community. There are Black Rock Rangers that are experienced in
handling these sorts of incidents and will be available to assist you.

Be especially careful about situations involving people under the age
of eighteen. No adult activities should be on public display. Please
steer any one under age away from any camps that are appropriate for
adults only. We have been asked by local law enforcement to
encourage you to post a look out for minors whenever adult oriented
activities are happening. This person should be actively encouraging
minors to move along and adult activities should be shielded from
public view.

Unfortunately there have been some bad apples in our Burning Man
bunch. There have not been many, but there have been some. Law
enforcement will be looking more closely to see that we are all
acting with due respect to the their local laws as well. Please make
clear choices towards awareness and make safety part of your
planning. Actively manage your camps, use a look out when appropriate
and report any problems that occur.

I welcome your feedback,

Harley K. DuBois

Go, Beavers!

Okay, so we're getting down to the wire and some of you are JUST joining the camp and may not have gotten on a conference or clearing call yet and some of you might be wondering, "who/what is the village that our camp exists within?"

Freedomcommunity Village, of which Camp Beaverton is a part, grew out of a collective of kick-ass people, all friends off-playa for years before experiencing BM together, who declared themselves "Freedomcommunity" and set as their intention to have a common intention(s) or set of themes. The most important one for me being that we be on the look out for and "collect" other self-aware, powerful, kick-ass people and introduce them to one another. And by kick-ass I mean people who are setting the bar of life as high as they can and not only jumping for it, but asking for support from those around them to set it higher next time, cheering on their fellow teammates to break the records they set, and striving to "show up" even when their shit gets kick up.

Now take that kind of person, have 80 to 100 of 'em camp next to one another and ask them, "What do you want to create today at Burning Man?"

Last year's BM camp (not quite a village then) was an awesome experience of community on the playa, support, teamwork, generosity, love, freedom, open communication, integrity and family. It was hard work, but it was as close to utopia with dust storms that I've experienced, for sure! I am wishing that Camp Beaverton generates a similar feeling of family and community and that our community meshes, ebbs and flows with the larger FCV and sets an example for other camps and villages of what is possible on the playa and in life.

Freedomcommunity is more than just a Burning Man thing and I thought I would let you all know that you're about to meet, hang, party, fall in love with, and get damn dusty with some of the baddest, most beautiful (inside and out), and most playfully serious men and women on the planet... And the fun part of all this, as I write it, is that I'm NOT EXAGGERATING!

And, for many of you, you won't know I'm telling the truth until you meet one another. : )

It's really fitting that Camp Beaverton's queer women's oasis (something that hasn't really been able to occur to this scale before in Black Rock City) is happening inside of Freedomcommunity Village. Not only do we have amazing women camping with Beaverton, we are surrounded by many more amazing women (and men, too) in the surrounding theme camps of our village.

Without the people that I've met via Freedomcommunity, I'm know I would never have had the balls (no pun, gals) to declare and help create a queer women's camp. It is because of these friends and lovers that I can be so open and bold and fearless about who I BE in this lifetime, and now we've gone and created something that's brining each one of us together. Each of you are so unique and amazing and I am not only touched that you're choosing to camp with us, but I cannot wait to meet you each in person!

AND, as if that weren't enough, I know many of the men and women who are going to be "living" with us in our village. I know them amazingly well and the knowledge that YOU GET TO MEET EACH OTHER and that you and I get to meet the people that they brought to camp with FCV is almost too much to bear. Someone get me to the playa now before I pee my pants! : )

I just wanted to say this to you all before we head out to the playa. I wanted to give you all a heads up on Freedomcommunity Village and my quick answer to the question, "What the heck is Freedomcommunity?" so that we all have a common reference to let our amazingness blossom forth from.

For a more detailed and awesome answer on Freedomcommunity and FCV, go here: http://freedomcommunity.net/2007/index.html

So happy, so excited,
REiD
Ps. If you haven't declared that you're camping with us, please do so on the "Who's Camping With Beaverton" thread. Smooches!

in offering to help with the construction of a flag pole for beaverton's banner, indigo (rather brilliantly) offered to equip our pole with a rainbow led light at the top--provided we can electrify it. here's why this is so awesome:

1. the rainbow would make our camp visible and easy to find for all the visiting ladies looking for us at night (when our in-process flag wouldn't be helpful).
2. even if every street sign ever was stollen off the playa, you'd still be able to find your way home. we'd be a landmark!
3. it would give me a toy to play with. i mean, it would give US a toy to play with. and who doesn't love toys?
4. clearly if that reasoning doesn't excite you, you should just re-read the words: "rainbow led light" a few more times.

but for this to happen, we need YOUR help. that help could come in two forms:

1. a really, really long extension cord (like over 50'...or more than one that could be strung together).
or
2. access to a generator, since beaverton doesn't have electricity. basically, if you're camping near us in an rv, and you think you can spare enough of your juice to plug our light in at night, i'd pretty much love you for the rest of my life or yours. whichever lasts longer.
(you could also help us figure out how to do this without generator access and on the cheap. the "loving you" clause would still apply....)

help with item one or item two... or both! beaverton needs your love and electric current!

1.	We discussed registering with Freedomcommunity Village and paying camp fees. Marsha explained that the fees are still $45 but will be going up to $60 on the 20th. The url to register is www.freedomcommunity.net/2007/membership07.html

2.	We talked about FCV clearing calls and the next one which will take place on Thursday 8/16 at 8pm EST. The number, for those who have yet to be on a call is: 1-218-936-1600, Code: 4678479

3.	We went over leadership positions that are yet to be filled:
a. Beaver Den décor. We have materials but we need someone to head up the design. Liz and Leah volunteered to help decorate, but neither can lead.
b.We are still looking for someone to help create a base for our Beaver flagpole. Those interested in lending a paw should contact Tanya on tribe.

4.	We discussed outstanding needs for Beaverton including:
a.	Extra blankets, pillows, mattresses, etc. Owners can take these loaned materials back after the burn or can donate them to future camping coziness. Marsha had the terrific suggestion of picking up pillows and such at thrift stores or bargain bins when stopping off in Reno for supplies. Such pillows are cheap and ubiquitous.
b.	Twinkle lights. Things are looking up for getting electricity in the dome. Any lights to donate would be appreciated.
c.	Toys, safe sex supplies, etc. Allison can get a bunch of condoms, lube, and hopefully dental dams from her workplace.
d.	Extra rugs or carpet scraps for the dome. Marsha mentioned that all scraps should have their edges duct-taped to avoid a moopish nightmare.
e.	Battery operated lamps for the den in case of no electricity. Liz mentioned a url for solar powered twinkle lights and tiki torches. She is looking for it now and will post it when she finds it.

5.	Next weeks call will be the LAST PLANNING CALL before the burn. We talked about spreading the word. This call will focus on wrapping up all loose ends. The call will be Tuesday, August 21 at 9:30 EST/ 6:30 PT. The dial in is 1-712-945-0210 Code: 232837#

6.	Miscellaneous business:
a.	Leah is looking for a ride from the Bay Area on Monday.
b.	Marsha announced a fundraising play party happening on Tuesday evening. Please see her posted topic about this for more info.
c.	Marsha asked that we spread the word about the final days of the FCV auction. Many of the items are earmarked for Beaverton specifically, so it will help us greatly if we get people to bid. She also noted that many of the bidders last year were friends of burners, so be sure to contact everyone who might bid- not just fellow burners.

I was hoping it would be ok if Rachel and I could host a short (1 hour or so) event at the Beaver Dome? We were thinking 5 o'clock on Wednesday evening...so far there is nothing else in that time slot...

It would be for a "Kidnapped Can Opener Meet and Greet" If you want to know more details about the KCO you could go here:
http://thekidnappedcanopener.blogspot.com/

Shouldn't be a huge group, probably under 10 people or so...

Hey all! I was just (finally, sorry!) putting together a nice little calender with all of the events that the Beaver Dome is hosting and I notice a that not all of the events mentioned how long they were needing the space for...so, here is a list of what I would love to see how long times for...that way if we need to schedule anything else or just would like to know when it's free to just "chill" in. :)

Thanks!!!

Ok, we need time allotments for the following events/activities:

Beaver Tales (I assume this is a "rest of the night" type event?)
Strap-on-A-Thon
Dancing to the Souls of Your Feet
Writing The Body: Reclaiming the Feminine Form through Words
Getting’ ‘er Done: Girl Sex 101 (there is something set for 5 hours later, but I assume that is ok?)

And this already has something set up in the hour later time-slot, so if you were hoping to have more than an hour we might consider changing the time/date...
