Abandon dog SOS!

Hello Burners,

This evening as I was arriving home from the dog park there was a dog running around in the street! I lured him back into the park thinking he must have gotten away from his owner. After talking to some people they told me a guy drove up let him out of his car and drove away!

He is a sweet pit mix, he hasn't had much training but is absolutely desperate for people attention. he seems healthy, a bit under weight and was desperate for water but seems much more settled after food and water.

Travis and I got a dog a few months back and can barley manage the time and expense of responsible dog ownership. If it was possible I would keep him but we just cant manage.

If anyone is interested please contact us. I hate to take him to animal control but there may be no other option.

Call us (24/7) if you think you can help this lost little guy find his way.

Kisses, DP

Kudos to you on rescuing this pup, there is no hell deep enough for someone callous and irresponsible enough to just abandon an animal that way. Perhaps some of the fine folks on this list can aid you in your quest to find this pooch a responsible caring family.

And you know if someone from this tribe does take him home that he will eat very well. :-)

might i suggest you look for a pit rescue group in your area. A pal came a cross a emaciated pit a few months back here in Oregon, and by chance I found a rescue group up in central Washington. They not only drove all the way down here to get him, but even offered to compensate em for the food they purchased for him. They was just glad to see him get a safe place to go to. Word is he is now on a small farm just east of Seattle. Good folks you are and good luck with the pup.

    I can't.
I live in Indiana and we have five cats - 4 more than enough but they tolerate one another.
    I wish I could.

I'd like to add my 2 cents worth. There are a lot of wonderful dogs in need of loving homes. For many people, adopting an adult dog is a better option than having to go through the relatively high-maintenance puppy stage.

There are some great rescue groups out there. For example, in my area, there's Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue. They do a very good job of bringing their charges up to speed on health and vaccinations. And on temperment testing, in order to give the best possible match with a prospective owner. Here's a website for animal adoption info for most of the U.S. It includes rescue groups, in addition to the more familiar Animal Control authorities and SPCAs.

The SPCA is a horribe organization. Please don't support them with your money.

just curious, but is your opinion based on a personal scenario, or might you have some printed verification that might sway a rather avid SPCA supporter to pull that support. In the mean time, forgive me if I remain compelled to support a NATIONALLY recognized rescue and support system. (Hope I sound as curious as i meant to, and not as rude as it may look, I really am wondering why the lack...:) )

I share Arrow's curiosity. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about my local SPCAs. But if I remember correctly, one of them had a policy requiring prospective volunteers to take a training course, and to make a long-term commitment before being allowed to do anything. That struck me as being unnecessarily bureaucratic. What if you just want to come once in a while, and play fetch-the-tennis-ball with some of the Labs? How much training does that require?

If your local SPCA is not up to the standards of the better pure breed rescue groups, why is that? Is it mostly because of bad people? Or because of bad management policies?

Or is it that they are simply biting off more than they can chew (to use a bad pun)? The pure breed rescue groups, with more specific mission statements, can afford to do more 'cherry picking', and to devote more resources to each dog. And this is reflected in the typically higher adoption fees.

Before he found a new home, my neighbor's dog was a really great companion for day-hikes. I imagine that the right match in an adopted dog would be an equally great companion for camping.

Arrow, here, where I live, the local SPCA is a caring outfit. I know a lot of them from person contact.
I support them, but not the national.

Yup, same here in my area and in most of the other cities I have lived in, the SPCA is a great goup of folks. Also, right on the possiblelack of quality personnel. That why I was so curious about what 'Goat' was saying. Oh well. Reminds me of how a person can get a bad menu item at one fast food place and decide that they are all bad. But what about the whopper, always good everywhere, ha ha.

Since we haven't gotten a reply from Goat, I thought I'd add my 2 cents.
From working at my local humane society (Not affiliated with a national group), people's main complaints/reasons for not supporting us:
                1. They kill animals (what do they suggest we do with the thousands of animals we got in every year? And this is flawed logic b/c if we had more money, we could build a better selter and take care of more animals, duh!)
                2. The staff wasn't very nice (overworked, underpaid, stressed out, doing the best they can to answer the same stupid questions 500x a day)
                Ok, that's all I got.

Good luck finding a place for him!
At our local off-leash park, there are at least two owners who let their dogs out at the park and then come back a couple hours later to pick them up! It's not daycare!! And I knew a guy who lived on the edge or the park and his dog used the whole park as his backyard.

I'm not ignoring you, I dont have much access to the internet right now.

In short, I can tell you I refuse to support the ASPCA or the HSUS because of their work towards the "animal rights" agenda.

Ofcourse the term "animal rights" is ridiculous, because animals don't have "rights". It really is just an attempt to infringe on the rights of American citizens, which are guaranteed by the U.S. Constutition.

Helping stray animals live happier/safer lives is a fine thing to be involved in, but when an organization goes beyond that and tries to impact public policy in a way that infringes on people's civil liberties or attempts to put animals on the same level as people, I will refuse to support them, personally resist their efforts, and encourage others to do the same.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

This sounds like a throw-the-baby-out-with-the-bathwater argument. Besides, the real animal rights nutcakes are in organizations, like PETA.

I just read an article about the Greenpeace guys chasing down another batch of Japanese whalers. Talk about crazy, Oh I dig these guys though. They got bigger 'pairs ' than I'llever have. Lets just hope they all know how to swim, just in case.

PETA makes Greenpeace activists look like a bunch of
                        milquetoast moderates.

Yes, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has done some
good things. But Newkirk's organization also kills thousands of
adoptable dogs and cats every year--sometimes under false
pretenses--and surreptitiously disposes of many of the bodies
in dumpsters at shopping malls. Is this an example of the
                        ethical treatment of animals?

And on the whole PETA tip I saw this today on another board and thought it might be relevant:
PETA Killed 97 Percent of 'Companion Animals' in 2006, According to VDACS

PETA Killed 97 Percent of 'Companion Animals' in 2006, According to VDACS

Death toll up to 17,400; overdue report describes PETA's deadliest year ever

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An official report from People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), submitted nine months after a Virginia government agency's deadline, shows that the animal rights group put to death more than 97 percent of the dogs, cats, and other pets it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 pets. The nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) is calling on PETA to either end its hypocritical angel-of-death program, or stop its senseless condemnation of Americans who believe it's perfectly ethical to use animals for food, clothing, and critical medical research.

Not counting animals PETA held only temporarily in its spay-neuter program, the organization took in 3,061 "companion animals" in 2006, of which it killed 2,981. According to Virginia's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in the state was just 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA killed 97.4 percent of the animals it took in. The organization filed its 2006 report this month, nine months after the VDACS deadline of March 31, 2007.

"Pet lovers should be outraged," said CCF Director of Research David Martosko. "There are thousands of worthwhile animal shelters that deserve Americans' support. PETA is not one of them."

In courtroom testimony last year, a PETA manager acknowledged that her organization maintains a large walk-in freezer for storing dead animals, and that PETA contracts with a Virginia cremation service to dispose of the bodies. In that trial, two PETA employees were convicted of dumping dead animals in a rural North Carolina trash dumpster.

Today in Southampton County, Virginia, another PETA employee will face felony charges in a dog-napping case. Andrea Florence Benoit Harris was arrested in late 2006 for allegedly abducting a hunting dog and attempting to transport it to PETA's Norfolk headquarters.

"PETA raised over $30 million last year," Martosko added, "and it's using that money to kill the only flesh-and-blood animals its employees actually see. The scale of PETA's hypocrisy is simply staggering."

To speak with a spokesman contact Tim Miller at 202-463-7112.

I don't know how you feel that way.

Promoting the animal rights agenda is the central purpose of the HSUS and the ASPCA.

PETA are a bunch of idiots for sure... The HSUS and the ASPCA are much more discreet about their agenda, and dont necessarily commit crimes to promote their agenda, as PETA is more than willing to do, but that doesn't mean I want to support them either.
