Bill to Ban Web Anonymity

Under House Bill 775, filed by Rep. Tim Couch, R-Hyden Kentucky.

Couch's bill would require anyone who contributes to a Web site to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that Web site. Their full name then would be used whenever they posted a comment.

Web site operators who violated the disclosure law would be fined $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for each subsequent offense.

I know I don't want every person out in cyberspace to know all my real life personal location information. Just because I want to speak up on topics and converse here doesn't mean I want my personal identity information shared So what are your general thoughts on this?

and on that note, BULLSHIT!, Someone got a rude e-mail and it pissed them off just enough. And derned if they aren't a politician to boot. Screw that while idea. I think that it'll be hard on to pass through any house. Including mine. I will turn off my pc if that crap happened. And I will happily sacrifice gas money for postage stamps. Grrrr.

The web is not annonomous - you are kidding yourself if you think it is. This would just enhance immediate transparency. Believe me, for safety and security, I like FEELING annonomous. Just know everything is traceable by those who would want to know.

    My 2 cents...

Do they even think about how hard this is to enforce? This law could only apply to websites hosted in America even if it passed. Sites hosted outside the us would go up in popularity. Also, they would only really be catching the "honest" criminals here. Anyone with a brain would go to an open wireless point or a starbucks to post crap or register for a forum with fake information. Then the supposed fine would go to the person not them. The logic behind such a law escapes me...

Google already knows all this information. And the feds are data mining all of our stuff too. We are not anonymous to them. What is the big deal?

But, seriously, this would be hard to enforce...no nearly impossible to enforce. As pointed out there is a jurisdiction problem with this idea. There are already many web servers located outside of the US to avoid silly laws such as these. They can move the equipment at will.

It would be a drag though. I enjoy being able to share things on-line that I would not be comfortable sharing if everyone in the world could access my home address.
