Well, "Bad Dog" — You gotta do what you gotta do.

I did search for the cause I have given you to feel this way.

I "met" you with this first post on Jan 22, the first posting (still there) of your chili —

    tribes.tribe.net/campfirec...243845caf8

Our second meeting was a little bizarre, and occurred on Jan 26 —

    tribes.tribe.net/campfirec...efc98f11e2

I recognized the strong possibility that you have some difficulty reading and understanding — and I may have been a bit mean in this exchange as I grew a little impatient. If you cannot or will not understand, then it's better to just walk away (figuratively). I believe that my demeanor was a little off-the-mark from where it should be, but only a little in the face of your poor/nonexistent understanding. I remained facilitative, considering.

BTW — "...his failure to follow the flow with the discussion thread here may suggest that he doesn;t know how" refers to the fact that you started your anti-Kingsford statement in the middle of the discussion thread, rather than at the end. (check the dates).

And our third encounter is from Jan 30 —

    tribes.tribe.net/campfirec...8d3e5480b4

Now today, when you again posted your chili recipe as a separate thread (okay), titling the thread as you did (not okay) and enjoining other Cafe members to post their favorite recipes (also, not okay).

Despite my continuing patience, you absolutely recoiled at my suggestions of any alternatives — and you followed with two personal messages that were little more than profane personal attacks. I retain copies.

I cannot let your second posting — the repost of your chili — remain.

Not because interpersonal communications challenges continue to characterize my contacts with you.

Not even because you continue to fail to understand and follow simple direction (and I can direct, where necessary — ultimately, this is not Democracy).

Especially not because your chili is/is not a "camp cookery recipe." Everything is a camp cooking recipe, right?

I originally wanted you to repost your recipe with a different discussion topic — not with a broadcast request for others' favorite recipes. I can see now that this is probably uncomfortable beyond your capacity to accept discomfort — real or imagined. I now realize that you may not be able to continue as a Campfire Cafe member. It remains your choice.

Both in the body of your recipe which begins with "Let's share some favorites" and in the title/topic of the thread "Let's share recipes," you ignore this fundamental difference in editorial direction. In this case, I insist that I remain the final arbiter — and you have no choice.

    Best wishes, regardless.

    Johnny.

Wow! Can't we all just sit around the campfire and be friends? ;-)

I am new to this tribe and just so I know for the future.....is it frowned upon to start threads that involve recipe sharing or was it due to him basically reposting the same information twice?

        Hi Crash!

Welcome to the cafe. Sorry that you're finding me at something less than my best.

        Why, indeed can't we...

Well. we do (and you are welcome to) post recipes — but it is not the principal focus of the forum. There are "recipe exchanges" all over tribe — I belong to over 80 of them myself. Only three or four of them have any signifiicant traffic. I have no desire to compete with them.

When I post a recipe, it is generally to meet a particular need — to demonstrate a particular technique. I will post more of them. Other members of the forum do, as well. If members have a particular focus for a recipe post, or not. I can't say. I have been very happy with what they do. I only ask that the post be given a title that is meaningful for the thread (recipe for... or RECIPE: or just Chicken & Dumplings).

But my goal is not to compete with the recipe exchanges — to post recipes identical to their stovetop equivalents. Even if you have the very best recipe for a particular dish, if it is a recipe designed primarly for preparation on your range at home then it is better posted in some other tribe. Dutch oven recipes, here. Grilling recipes, here. Smoking recipes, here. Specialized cooking, like backpacking meals or cooking for a Theme camp or Scout troop, here. Pass-around-the-campfire treats, here.

I didn't have a problem with BDs recipe, or that it was posted twice, I didn't like the fact that — instead of telling what his posting was, the thread title was used to ask all others to post favorite recipes. Since I know that almost all of the 80+ recipe exchanges are inactive, I don't want to go there — or to have unrelated recipes croud our screens,

This will work for all your posts, not just recipes. Don't just post a thread like "Check out this site" or "Check out this Tribe." I will delete 'em.

Don't make people follow your links to find out what your intent is. I do follow most/all of these links, and delete many of them because they are insulting to forum members. Tell us what they are, first.

Don't post crassly commercial threads under false or misleading "teaser tags." If you post a link to information about the use of tripods, for example, then the information needs to be there — not an offer to purchase a booklet about the use of tripods.

        Does this help?

Thank you for the clarification.....and on the contrary of <finding me(Dok Atomik) at something less than my best> I'm pleased to see a moderator actually moderate.

            *blush* Thanks, Crash.

            I do try.

I wish (of course) I had more of the resource that is me. But we are incredibly lucky to have found the folks here with us 'round the campfire — both those who have introduced themselves, and a buncha others I imagine looking over my shoulder. The ones who've yet to say "Hi!"

The yahoos have been few (and are always welcome back).

Now, if only I could get some headway on the "to do" list:

Smoking and Dutch oven topics first, with grilling and campfire plank broiling topics in time for early harvest fishing and first-thaw camping in Yosemite. Work out better linking of pictures to text postings. Vegetarian goodies. Phew! That carries me to Spring Break. Any volunteers?

Oh, of course, and the customer service stuff.

That's another place where all of you can help! I know you are ready *grin* to help with welcoming newcomers to the campfire, either by inviting friends to join us or just to say "Hi" to a newcomer in the "Campfire Cafe: introductions & campfire stories" thread.

Err, and remind me to cut down on the "bashing" stuff. *grin*

Thanks, Crash — and thank you all.

            Johnny

Yep, the welcome note when I joined was a great touch, and I have to say pleasantly surprised me. I saw a blurb on black powder reenactments on this tribe, so not only is there an on top moderator but reenactor camp cooking as well. The History major in me loves the camp fire : )

Me too!!!!! Dok has set certain expectations and what matters is that he set them (and set them clearly), not whether or not you agree with his moderation techniques. I think many moderaters fancy themselves as "creaters", they create the tribe and the job's done... no no no, diection is needed.. the unwanted element and spammers are out there and want only to annoy and destroy the integrity of a topic with a poor joke or senseless pitch.

              Hey Trix!

*enjoying a swig of St. Sixtus*

Well, in fairness to the absent moderators, the opportunity to create a tribe is easy — without regard for the difficulties (and, sometimes, the amount of work involved) associated with moderation. We need to take back control, if necessary, without being heavy-handed about it.

I don't know half as much as many Cafe members about outdoors cooking or camping. I do have a bit of knowledge about moderating a forum (or a bunch of forums) from my past. I was owner/operator/principal programmer of The Aloha Network in Hawaii some years ago. Now, I am very happy to just moderate this tribe.

And I do like it — a lot. The Cafe is doing a lot for me from a therapeutic benefit. I cannot predict what will or will not work, what will please everyone, or what will trigger radical excursions from normalcy for any person.

All I can do is encourage the behaviors that I like, that I want to share. With some luck, I will find a group of folks who agree (in general) with me, share the environment created and maintained by all of us, and continue to warn me if I get out-of-hand and start "bashing" folks.

I can't promise to police for poor jokes. Patience will bring a lot of them around (or improve their jokes).

Ya gotta love the Belgians. Now, that's beer!!!

    Hi everyone!

I'm sorry that I may seem slow with some replies (I promise to get to all of them).

This morning, I let my attention stray to areas of Tribe OUTSIDE the Campfire Cafe. Err, and OUTSIDE my usual stomping grounds of cooking-, camping-, and cannabis-related Tribes.

Forgive me that some cannabis-related Tribes remain on my list. I am unable to remember why I bother with those. I am a Prop 215 patient, but not at all like the flocks of teenage football-jocks who apply for patient status. I have about had it with postings like "I can't use cannabis when I am sick" and — with the reply activity — the overwhelming agreement.

It's why Prop 215 and the dispensaries are ultimately doomed.

Where I visited this morning was a very popular tribe here on Tribe — and one that appears to be managed well. I do have issue, though, with having to read a full screen of rules on how to post.

Especially the part already covered by the Tribe TOU document. EVERY TIME I enter the tribe.

I wouldn't do it. If it takes forcing every user to read rules like "don't be an asshole" every time they enter the tribe, then it's pretty clear to me that the behaviors are a bit beyond what I would probably accept among a group of folks sitting around the Campfire Cafe fire circle.

If I am uncomfortable, then I am guessing that a lot of you would be as well.

I have already had one user complain that — because I don't have the "don't be an asshole" rule posted in the tribe description — it's unfair to ask folks to not be an asshole while they're here.

    Whaddya think?

      Dok,

I will not belong to tribes with such long intros that I have to page down more than once before I even see any of the posts! And, I think in a relatively non-contentious tribe such as this one, there's no need for a "don't be an asshole" statement. You have the freedom to delete unhelpful posts, and you do a fine job.

      My two cents,

I guess I have been sheltered. I have only noticed behaviors among the tribes I read as a member (and don't really read some of the high-volume stuff like the Burning Man tribe — it's more like a sporadic sampling). How much of that CAN you read?

Links that are among the stuff posted on the Cafe have led me to new territory (the Politics tribe, and some others), where conflict is much greater. *grin*

I tell you, I don't miss the hotter heads among the online community. I now enjoy a sheltered cul-de-sac compared to much of my previous internet (and pre-internet arpanet, mainframe links, etc.) experience.

But contentions or not, why can't we just be...

I agree, we don't need such a thingie.

        Thanks,

        Johnny
