I've been accused of being overly cautious sometimes when camping/traveling, which I think is partly from being a lone woman (men traveling alone don't seem to want/need the same level of safety) and partly from years of living in NYC. However, I have to honestly say that many times I felt my precautions were warranted and the people criticizing were either too naive or inexperienced to know what actually could happen. :) -

I do a ton of hiking and camping alone which makes me a tad over cautious. This has nothing to do with vanity, just the perception of a lone person, maybe a woman would seem more of a target of stupidity. I don't know for sure.
I think everyone needs to watch out for themselves and being overly cautious isn't a bad idea.
Again, I completely agree about being naive or inexperienced.. so lets spread the awareness and protect yourself!
