So I'm shopping for a new tent. Between the reviews and deals and features, I'm a bit lost.
Weight doesn't matter much since I mostly car camp, for now.
Musts:
2 people sleep comfortably
Weather proof i.e. rain and WIND (Kansas and Missouri have CRAZY weather)
Good ventilation (I can't sleep if I'm too hot, or even too warm :)
$300 or less
Pluses:
Vestibules
SO I'm considering the Sierra Designs Reverse Combi or Electron.
Any experience with either of these?
Any other recomendations?

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 3:20 AMSome of the most active campers in our group are Springbar aficionados. Here's a link to a tent discussion in an earlier thread. If I remember correctly, their smallest model is within your price range.

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 1:40 PMI feel your pain! I spent MONTHS researching sites and message boards. I ended up with an odd one found only on Ebay...and I can't remember the name of it...but it has served me well for nearly five years, now. Drat. Pana...something.
I'm actually in the market for something new - something less "tenty" so I'm glad you started this thread. I'm thinking about an EZ Up type thing, and making walls for it. -

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 5:54 PMOh, oh! A friend of mine made the best shelter I've ever seen, really cheaply!
Basically, ripped down some salvaged wood to about 1 1/2: square poles, edges smoothed town, 3 or 4 6' and 4 or 6 4', drove nails in the tops. Use large tarps, his were brown on one side and silver on the other, maybe 20'x30'. Thin rope with 1-2" rings on one end. And bent rebar steaks, of course.
It's great to see people's faces when we break all our stuff out. No one thinks it's going to work. But it is the strongest shelter and you can configure it a bunch of different ways. Last year we used it at a music festival and I ended up sleeping under it during a rainstorm, stayed totally dry.
The secret (if you've never used this type of thing, if you have don't be offended and add yer 2cents) is to put the nails through the eyelets in the tarp and lay the poles sticking out of the tarp. Drive in the steaks (2-4 feet from the edge of the stretched out tarp), flip the rings over the nails, and loosely tie the ropes to the re-bar, slightly shorter than the pole. Push the pole bottoms toward center, creating a nice, tight tarp. May have to adjust ties on re-bar. Small learning curve, but once you've got it up one time, you'll figure it out! If you've ever put up one of those giant white tents at a festival or circus, you'll be way ahead of the game, same concept.
Only real downside is figuring out a way to transport the poles, as they don't fold down. This is what makes them strong, but not practical for some people's vehicles. We put them on a Forrester last year. Kinda looked like a unicorn :)
Easy-ups seem like a good idea, but we've found that most all metal bends in the wind and no one seems to guy them out. Can't tell you how many busted Easy-up we laughed at while staying safe and dry under our home made wonder.
Sorry bout the rant, I just love the Big Brown Wonder. Too bad I'm not really friends with the owner anymore and we'll have to make our own this year. Boo-hoo. -

> ... the best shelter I've ever seen ...
Molly,
I'm having some trouble "visualizing" this. Do you have any photo's ('specially photos from the putting-it-up stage, and/or any shots where we can clearly see the pole/nail/tarp layout once it's up ) ?
Or could you try to explain a bit differently?
Many, many thanks!

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 1:52 PMHmmmmm. Simpler than these.
I guess the best way to describe it would be to think of those cheapo canopys with the blue tarp and thin metal poles. On steroids.
Kind of ike #3 on your list.

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 6:48 PMSo I'm leaning towards the Springbar Campsite or the Outfitter.
The Campsite is more than I wanted to spend, but it looks sooooo good. Anyone used an Outfitter? I'm a sucker for the extra touches, canopy and extra pockets........mmmmmm
From reading around tribe, the Snow Peak Stakes seem to be the way to go.
I know stakes are no place to skimp, but has anyone used the Springbar plastic ones?

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 12:53 PMI *really* love our REI Half Dome made for two peeps. Doors and vestibules on both sides, perfectly fits two thermarests side-by-side, a couple strategically placed pockets, an overhead canopy/hammock thing for stuff like headlamps and keys, and super easy and fast to put up. No extra space inside, but roomy vestibules make up for it. Also doubles for a perfect weekend festival tent for one. ; )

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 5:36 AMI was gonna be a smart ass and suggest a couple of tarps, some great rope and an extra set of clothes in case it got chilly. I tent to try to only pack the absolute bare essentials, bu then I also tend to have a sick picky kid with me and sharing a back seat in the rain, ha ha ha

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:30 PMyes, we also have a 2 person REI half dome and it has served us well. overall it's a great value. -

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 6:07 PMThree votes for the REI half dome - cheap and works fine. Not the lightest for backpacking but for short trips its cool. -

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 9:30 AMOn the REI Half Dome, make that four (five, six and seven)! I bought one, liked it so much while camping with my brother, I bought him one, followed by picking up two of the three -person versions for both sets of married kids. We all love our tents - and can camp together comfortably, now. -

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 2:51 PMIt seems like the only draw back might be "Ops Sorry, wrong tent"
But who's to say that might not turn into a positive???

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 1:58 PMoh, I forgot to mention that I have used the half dome in windy conditions and it holds up well if you use the rain tarp. I was even able to erect it by myself in the wind, although it was pain. I never realized how much it seemed like a shelter, once I moved in.

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 9:10 AMI use the Snow Peak Stakes out at burning Man. I use the standard 'nails'
(the metal spikes with a green plastic connector on the end) in rocky areas.
The green connectors always break so I'm left with a big nail, but they still
work. I thought that the yellow plastic ones would be worthless, but they've
actually been the best choice in sand. I've camped in extreme conditions and
my Springbar has never blown down. While my neighbors' tents were thrashed.

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 9:03 PMOne of the best new tents I have seen recently is an Eureka Pine Lodge tent. This tent is a 10X12 cabin type, It is one of the best for ventilation I have seen. Goes up in under 20 minutes(10 with practice) and gives you plenty of room if you get stuck with a couple days of rain there is enough room to do everything inside snug and dry. It is a little higher than $300 but worth the extra money. Do a web search Campmor sells it for 399.95 but I found it other places for as low as 349.95 and some even with free ground shipping. OH the tent weighs 46 pounds packed. In case that was of concern for you. I really like the zipperless front fan door.

Re: Tent Help!!!!
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 10:48 PMI use a futon on my four poster bed which is built into my tent.
When it dies in 5 or 6 years, I will switch to one of those 8 inch memory foam mattresses.
