Playa Conditions

Same old report as every other year. Its windy. Its dusty. We're in a for a hell of a (fun) week.

This came in a cowboy email from peeps already out there:
"... it's fucking brutal. Yes. 35 mph winds with almost constant white outs. Our shade structure, a 10x20 kragen deal that survived quite well
last year, collapsed in mere minutes of it's vertical magnificence. busted and broken. For the first time in my 5 years on the playa, if I could go
back home, I would. It's almost unmanageable. They say it might improve but it was such a dry winter and dry summer that how it can improve is a mystery to me. But I've had cool interactions and met some awesome people hanging at frog. We stayed there for 3 days wallowing in the magical frog waters. The burn never really disappoints but after such a fucking good mich fest, this is a sharp ass contrast. dig?!
So if your coming to the playa, plan for major wind, major dust and most likely cold nights. It's gonna be one of those years I think.

Keep in mind though that it's still another week 'til we're out there"

The gods will respond to my prayers for nice weather.

Fuck it, you can't keep the Burners down!

Yeah, there have been a lot of reports about crazy wind and dust action this year, more than usual. If the playa didn't get much rain.snow melt, it could get ugly. Just hope the playa gods are good to us this year. Last year's weather was so nice. I'm bringing extra goggle action just in case.

I hear the strong winds are mostly from the same direction, so we can arrange camp to use the vans and cars to block the wind.

Also, Jon was worried that the parachute might not hold up in very strong winds. We should probably bring the linen as well. I have more grommets we can use. Are we going to pre-grommet the parachute? We could maybe do it tomorrow evening while painting the cart?

    Another report:
Just got this email. Its really good information on what to be prepared for at Burning Man.

    > Greetings from the playa where I am happy and well and holded up in my car.

    > I dont want this to deter anyone from coming, as it's still a blast -

    > but..batten down the hatches kids, cause the wind is the worst I've

    > seen in the 12 years I have been coming here. For those of you around

    > when the big wind hit last year and took our camp down, that is the

    > way it has been the bulk of the time - really that windy, mostly non

    > stop. The airstream is shaking and rocking and my tent is tied to

    > every rack and bumper and hitch the truck & airstream have, and I'm

    > still unsure if it's going to hold up (one pole already snapped). The

    > the event. but the green man is about nature, so be prepared for the

yeah, i saw that posted somewhere last night. yikes. reminded me to cover the mesh on the top of my tent in advance!

Yeah, covering the mesh is a good idea. But does that sort of rigging work on the playa? Would you use hot glue? Craft glue?

I stole your magnet idea last year and used a tapestry over my bed area and attached it to the roof of the tent using magnets. It kept my bed mostly dust free by catching all the falling dust from the ventilation along the top. Plus it makes for an extra plush tent sleeping experience :)

Its going to be an interesting year :) :)

yeah, putting a sheet or something over your bed to shake the dust out of is def. a good idea. my friend Jackie gave me that tip for my first year ;) along with warning me about playa boogers, and thank precum she did! damn those fuckers hurt!!

last year I used a space blanket duct taped along the top of my tent (inside) to cover up the mesh and collect the dust. i did that on playa though. this year i think i will dust tape the space blanket to the outside of the tent in advance to cover the mesh vents, under the fly, and hope the wind doesn't rip them loose.

i've heard of people using hot glue. i have some strong super glue i could use, but don't know if i want the cover to be perma covered to the tent yanno?

glad the magnets worked!! i = smrt

heh. I don't know *what* to believe anymore. This is from a friend of mine:

Funny how conflicting reports can be. Here is a
report from a very good friend of mine who has been
going out to burning man for 10+ years and has been on
    playa for the past week:

I am sitting next to the Center Camp Cafe as I write.
Nice warm night tonight, and lots of stars.

The playa is not particularly soft or dusty. Yes,
there were some dust storms when that cold front moved
through, but I am surprised at the lack of dust when
the winds are in the 30 mph range. Many times over
the years we have had big dust storms that pretty much
shut the city down for a while, or even a whole day.
Rebar holds well in the ground, and the playa is not
noticeably softer than last year. There are some
small dunes of loose playa here and there, but not as
bad as a couple of years ago. Not hard to ride your
bike. Cars do not raise as much dust as in past
    years.

So there is someone else's perception of the playa
    conditions as of Monday.

either last year or the year before people were swearing up and down that it would DUMP RAIN all over us during the first few days and it never did. things change so fast i try not to make any assumptions. hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Yeah, we hear this 'playa is crazy' shit every year.
Whatever, the more wind and dust, the better; It'll make for better experiences/stories anyways.
