If you are passing by Douglas Street in Victoria on August 19, watch for gagged activists congregating around the Times Colonist building, in mute testimony to the media hush surrounding the North American Security and Prosperity Partnership, also known as “deep integration”.
The gagged gang will be part of a nationwide day of action organised by the Council of Canadians, with events ranging from the decorously educational to the wickedly spoofy. The day of action coincides with a deep integration summit in Montebello, PQ, between Prime Minister Harper, George W. Bush and Felipe Calderon of Mexico.
Since its birth in 2005, the Security and Prosperity Partnership has drawn criticism from NGOs concerned about corporate influence eclipsing countries’ rights to legislate health and environmental standards.
Thirteen US states have passed resolutions directing Congress to nix the deal.
One of the more jaw-dropping initiatives is the so-called NAFTA superhighway from Mexico to Canada: a corridor several hundred metres wide including freeways, railways and pipelines.
In this light, the BC government's pet Gateway project - involving a threefold expansion of port facilities, highways and bridges in Greater Vancouver - looks like a chip off the old block.
