Why are Scorpios also called a 'water sign' when a scorpion is a land animal that lives in the dessert? I have heard that scorpions are related to crabs (I'm talking literal scorpions and crabs lol), but they still don't live in the water.
I just had to get that out, because I've wondered for a long time haha :D

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:41 PMi think its their connection with the deep deep emotions......... -
-
Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:49 PMI do understand the connection. I guess I'm thinking of it in more of a literal way.. like how is it considered a water sign animal? lol
-
Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:22 PMWell I guess I shouldn't look at it too literally lol :) I started thinking about the other signs too.. Like how is a ram and a lion (Aries and Leo) considered a fire sign, and 'twins' (Gemini) considered air. I guess astrology as a whole isn't really meant to be taken 'literally' though. lol so just try to bear with me. I'm still pretty new to astrology, so certain things haven't really 'clicked' yet :) -

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:44 PMSince there are no real "have to's" in most of life and astrology, if it pleases someone to create ones own symbols which feel more fitting to each sign we could do this.
If it serves whatever uses we desire and find fulfilling to change our perspective, analogies, symbols, interpretations... as long as we respect others rights to choose for themselves - wonderful creativity it is.
Ive wondered the same thing though Heather. Most scorpions that im aware of do not live in the water. There are some which may take a little dip in some water, but not like fishies that I know of currently.?
Maybe its the hard crustacean shell like cancer the crab? When adding either to water, their soft insides become exposed and vulnerable.? Emotions & feelings revealed even more.?
Mmnn. Having remnants of dream memories from last night and a while ago come washing over me again. Was relating with a woman who somehow I knew was a cancer sun influenced woman. Intense connection. Some reminded me of a woman I related with as friends with a bit more chemistry, a little over a year ago. But not sure it was her exactly in the dream? Felt very connected, synergistic, harmonious and kind of erotically spiritually aware and energetically surrouding each other. In a very appealing way. More to it, but hard to verbalize.
Guess that was a tangent, related to crustaceans.
I agree with the idea of loosely interpreting the symbolisms. Probably a freer way of playing & viewing the energies & symbols.? -

LOL maybe instead of Scorpios they should be called Lobsters :)) j/p -

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 12:30 AMWell, this is kind of a stretch, but I've heard that if you put a scorpion in the middle of a ring of fire that it will sting itself and die. Maybe it's their aversion to fire, stemming from this fact/myth that made people think of them as more watery to begin with.....
Like I said, it's a stretch, lol.

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:44 PMI searched a long time before I got the answer to this question. Had to actually study the scorpion itself to finally figure out that they live in dark damp places here in the desert like inside cactus plants which hold and store water. Scorpio is fixed water unlike the crab and the fish. Scorpions live in still waters but they do actually live in water :) -

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 11:00 PMWow. I did not know that about scorpions. Thank you Bobbi for sharing that. And Heather for asking.
Inside cactus... somehow thats really cute! Cute wittle scorpion . Sittin in da cactus wid a widdle wade pond of its own. Brilliant.

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 6:55 AMseriously, though, bobbi, this is due to recent research, I don't think that the first astrologers used the scorpion as a symbol because they lived inside cactus. All they knew about scorpions back then could probably be resumed to "AAAA!!!" "laughs"

Sun, April 13, 2008 - 6:53 AMactually, this might be proof that astrology has been around for millions of years, from a time when scorpions were indeed, sea creatures. "giggles" -

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 3:15 PMOh, I believe that they were somehow at one time sea creatures and not sure where Astrologers got water with an arachnid but they do live in water, cacti, puddles, planter beds...I have them here *smiles*
Scorpions can also live without water. I had one in a glass jar for 6 months without food or water. I wanted to see how long it would live and it was half a year...I feel bad now that I let it go like that but I used to hate them and was intimidated when I almost stepped on it. I like them now. I have a pic of her in my pics place. Check it out if ya wanna :)

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:08 PMLOL wow they can live a long time without water! They are interesting little creatures :) My sister had a pet scorpion once, and we also had some pet hermit crabs before lol :D And that was before I started getting into astrology.. and my sister's never been into it. We're both Pisces suns too.. so I guess it shows that we were drawn to scorpions and crabs even before realizing we're attracted to Scorpios and Cancers haha:D -

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:52 PMYeah, they are interesting creatures and pretty much relate to the signs...I find it interesting that scorpions have 16 eyes. I think it must relate to the sun sign's intuition. The male and female scorpion do a long dance as a sexual ritual and sting the hell out of each other. Relating to male and female scorpion relationships, makes perfect sense, LOL. Why bother? It's all about the passion. ha ha...Then the female gets pregnant and destroys the male. Yup! She carries her babies till they are ready to destroy her and the cycle starts again. I'm livin it! *wink* -

Re: Ok this might be the dumbest question ever, but I'll ask anyway....
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 10:58 AMfirst, i'd say that the animal symbol doesn't necessarily reflect the element... like what does a goat have to do with fire.
but, also, the first scorpions were actually aquatic and the desert was once the ocean.

Sun, April 20, 2008 - 1:26 PMhere's another dumb question: have u noticed that so many people with influential Scorpio energies in their chart tend to have relatively small heads comparing to the rest of their bodies? Just like a scorpion."giggles"

I've known lots of Scorps personally that have really tiny heads.
