  • Spell Construction

    Sun, November 5, 2006 - 2:11 PM
    Creating Your Own Spell
A spell is nothing more than a verbal expression of your desires, wishes and prayers. Just as with many prayers, or songs, a spell can be both literary and poetic, or simple and to the point. The trick to casting a good spell, is finding the right way to say it and do it for yourself, not based on what someone else says you should do. In other words, if it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

The best spells are the ones you create yourself. Don't stop reading here just because you don't think you have the talent or creativity to create a good spell. You do! Trust me. You just need to follow a few basic steps and you'll be able to perform some of the most beautiful rituals you can imagine.

    The Power Of A Spell
A spell or prayer find it's energy from you. You bring it to life and put it forth on the breath of the universal wind. Once it comes to life, the energy of your words can grow, evolve and manifest into reality. But first you must find the words that have meaning to you. After all you will be the one casting these words and desires upon the wind, if you don't believe in what they say, how are they going to have the will to come to life?

The power of a spell is like the power of a prayer. It finds it's life within your personal intent, your desire, you need to bring the event into manifestation. Ultimately, a spell finds life through your belief.

    Constructing A Spell
There are only 12 simple steps to creating a good spell. Get out your Book of Shadows and favorite pen, then begin your construction.

Before you even thing of setting up your ritual space, or gathering your tools, you must think about the design of your ritual and the underlying intent or purpose of the spell.
The first section of your spell is a statement of intent. Clearly define what you wish to accomplish with this spell.
Write out the words you want to recite during the rite, so you don't stumble over your words. Create a simple 4 line verse which explains your desire and intent. The verse can rhyme if you like, but it doesn't have to.
The second verse casts the energy of your intent out to universe for creation.
The last verse defines the reason for the casting. Be it healing, spiritual knowledge, or to share your love.
Here's an example of a love spell:
I set forth my heart and wish,
for a loving honey of a dish.
I send out my desire for love,
upon the divine wings of a dove.
To share my spiritual need and life,
with a precious woman who will be my wife. (if you're a guy)
with honor and respect to be his wife. (if you're a girl).
Here's an example of an employment spell from Patricia Telesco:
    My goal is sure,
    my need is strong,
help me find where I belong.
    To meet my needs,
    employment I seek,
bring me success by the end of the week.
If you want to invoke a particular alchemical element, decide which one will best represent and compliment the energy you wish to create. If you need help with the elements, read the Alchemy Of Life posting. Once you've decided which element to utilize, select an object or tool that will best represent that energy in your ritual.
Decide how you will visualize your desire as you recite your spell. My favorite scientist, Albert Einstein, once said "Thought is energy. To create energy, use your imagination". This is the principal behind visualization. Saying the words to your spell at the same time visualizing their creation will add energy to your ritual. Don't skimp on your visualization! You might consider doing this part of your ritual within the frame work of a mini-meditation so that you can fully enjoy your visualization journey.
List out all the items and tools you want to use during your ritual. Candles, stones, matches, music, tape player or recorder, your Book Of Shadows, a pen, and so on. Make a check list so you don't forget anything when you're inside your circle.
If you wish to invoke a deity, decide which one. Chose some symbolic object to represent that deity within the ritual. Write out the words for a prayer or blessing to honor the deity you've chosen.
If you practice the Celtic method of honoring by food, decide what type of food to prepare, how to prepare it and how you will incorporate it within your ritual.
Decide where you will conduct your ritual. Where will depend largely upon your physical resources and environment. Make sure the ritual space is clean, and uncluttered. Make sure the place you choose will provide you with at least 30-60 minutes of privacy. And make sure the ritual space is an area where you feel completely comfortable and at ease in.
The last preparation is to decide the time for your ritual. Timing involves a few considerations. If you are invoking a specific deity, you might determine which time of the day, night, week or even month is best suited for that particular deity. You might even decide to conduct your ritual in conjunction with a particular phase of the moon or location of the sun.
That's all there is to the construction of a spell. If you'd like an example of a spell ritual from start to finish, you might take a look at the PagansPath Grimoire.
    • The Alchemy Of Life

      Sun, November 5, 2006 - 2:14 PM
      The Elements
Alchemy is a word based on the ancient Egypt 'al khem qem'. Al Kem means a mixture to create mixture, qem is to form from primary substance. In Latin, Alchemy is 'all composition'. The alchemical traditions associate certain elements of nature to the life of the world or universe even. In order for life to exist in any form, these four elements must exist.

There are only four elements in life: Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

The Alchemical Theory goes something like this:
When a substance is heated, a spirit comes out, and the substance will condense upon itself. When in this condensed state, the substance can be manipulated and molded. As it cools, the spirit returns to the substance filling it with life and a renewed purpose based on it's new shape. The substance represents the earth, the heat represents the fire, the spirit is air and the cooling is water. Thus you need all the basic elements of nature to move forward, change and grow. To live basically.

In esoteric terms, the principles of Alchemy explain the relationships between total creation the position of the parts which compose it. All parts are created from each other part, without all parts, there is nothingness.

Here's a quick example, Air feeds fire, fire dies by water, water is contained by earth, and earth creates the air. The cycle is meant to show the interconnection of all things, and the cycle of birth, life, change and death.

      Air
The first element of the alchemical tradition. Air is the essence of intuition and learning, the element of the North and the nature of the mind.
Astrological Signs: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
Represented by: Feathers, Birds, incense, fans, flags, flowing garments and sheer material.
      Season: Winter
      Color: White

      Fire
The second element of the alchemical tradition. Fire is the essence of purification and change, the element of the East and the nature of the will.
Astrological Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
Represented by: Fire, candles, lights, dragons and the sun.
      Season: Spring
      Color: Yellow and Green

      Water
The third element of the alchemical tradition. Water is the essence of love and fertility, the element of the south and the nature of emotions.
Astrological Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
Represented by: Water, lavender fragrance, Fish, coral and sponges.
      Season: Summer
      Color: Blue

      Earth
The fourth element of the alchemical tradition. Earth is the essence of grounding and stability, the element of the West and the nature of balance.
Astrological Signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
Represented by: Dirt, sand, sage, Gnomes and goblins, a staff or stake, trees and plants.
      Season: Autumn
      Color: Red

      An Alchemists Alter:
If you would like to create a Magik circle that incorporates the alchemical elements, here's are some sugggestions for setting up the directional alters. ***REMEMBER EVERYONE'S DIRECTIONS ARE DIFFERENT. GO BY WHAT FEELS RIGHT TO YOU AND BY WHERE YOU LIVE!***

      North/Air
White Candles, White Goose feather, or fan, Gardena incense, a small statue of a bird, and a clear quartz crystal all sitting upon a white or cream colored lace cloth. If you want to enhance the color of the North, you might place a very light colored lavendar cloth under the lace covering.

      West/Earth
Red Candles, a bowl of earth, a small statue of a tree, a garnet or red agate stone sitting upon a pink cloth. If you want to enhance the color of the West, you might place a very light colored pink lace over the darker pink cloth. Poulucci incense is a wonderful scent for the Earth as well.

      East/Fire
Yellow or Green Candles, a smudge stick of sage and cedar, a small statue of a dragon, an emerald or malichite stone all sitting upon a gold colored cloth. If you want to enhance the color of the East, you might place a dark green cloth under a yellow lace covering.

      South/Water
Blue Candles, bowl of sea salt water, a small statue of a fish or sea mammal, like a whale or dolphin, and an aquamarine crystal sitting upon a blue cloth. If you want to enhance the color of the South, you might place a very light colored blue lace covering over the darker blue cloth. Sandlewood is the perfect scent for the south.

  • WHAT IS MAGICK?

    Sun, November 5, 2006 - 2:27 PM
What is magick? Forget all the fallacies and stereotypical pre-conceptions
taught to you out of fear and ignorance and approach this question with an
open mind. You will probably find it is not what you have been taught to
think. Magick has been defined as "The art and science of causing change to
occur in conformity with will *1" which could be put more simply as making
desired change happen; or as "energy tending to change"; a definition I use
is "magick is conscious evolution through directing energy". This does not
really explain magick though, so I will try to elaborate on these phrases
    without jargon.

An aim of magick is to train the mind by harnessing and making more
consciously accessible such higher faculties as intuition, inspiration and
the creative imagination, and by drawing on the power of the unconscious -
to try and use more than the 10% of our brain's capacity that we do.

Magick assumes belief in, or rather experience of, subtle energies. We can
only see about one seventieth of the light spectrum, yet what we cannot see
still affects us - such as x-rays and ultraviolet light. Similarly, magick
is about focusing more subtle, non-physical energies, and directing them to
create change. To go about this requires experience, and training to improve
the power of the mind, and specifically, the will.

Acts such as meditation, breath control, voice work, body work,
visualization, drama, ritual, and others, are all designed to improve our
body and mind, to better sharpen us and balance us, and to enable us to
perceive and wield more subtle energies.

In the same way, an individual is as strong as their will, and the more
balanced and integrated a person is, the stronger their will (note, this is
probably one of the main reasons why so many magicians have experience of
counselling and/or psychology, recognising the help these processes can
give, both through training and experiencing them. This also acts as a
removal of farcical social stigma often attached to these processes).

Practising magick tends to act as a deconditioning mechanism and can be a
subtle process, the longer you practice, the more you change and the
unnecessary inhibitions, stigmas, guilts and sin complexes that society
builds in are removed. This has the effect of releasing their energy into
the psyche, where it can strengthen the individual.

The more physical side, such as yoga, bodywork, dance and massage, also
removes the tension held in the body as body armour, and releases this and
removes energy blockages which impair full efficiency and may result in
    illness.

Possibly the major difference between magick and many of the religious paths
to spiritual growth is that magick is more dynamic, and places the emphasis
on you to work for change - there are no gurus in magick, rather there are
fellow students with different perspectives and experiences - we learn from
each other, as in other areas of life.

Magick tends to work a lot with symbols, as these are the language of the
unconscious, and this is an area of tremendous power to tap. Symbols have
many functions, and one of these, released through magick, can be the
ability to confound the ego and the censor mechanisms, and enabling us to
perceive more subtle truths, or experience direct revelations. Although we
may not be able to fully explain how symbols work, we know from experience
that certain symbols seem harmonious with certain types of energy.

For example a magician may tell you that if you want to attract love you
should wear green, and rose perfume, perhaps wear copper, like a bracelet or
necklace, etc. These are all things attributed with Venus, who is associated
with love, and so the principal is one of contagion - sympathetic magick, or
making something happen by working with items linked to it. This is one of
the oldest and most commonly practised forms of magick. Working with the
symbols of a type of energy does seem to attract that energy.

A cautionary word here, magick is often seen as a way to hidden powers, and
entered for the wrong reason, the "I want sex, power and lots of money"
syndrome. Now there is nothing wrong with these things in themselves, but
when you do magick you will discover that you tend to get what you need
rather than necessarily what you want.

When you do magick you generally use techniques to alter your state of
consciousness and raise energy, and then direct that energy to create a
desired result. The channel that energy takes as directed by your altered
state of consciousness is not necessarily the path you might expect in your
normal everyday state. Magick does bring you power, yes, but it is power
over yourself, not other people. It is the power that is important, to grow
    and to create positive change.

This does not mean there is anything wrong with using magick to gain more
physical things, there is nothing wrong with doing a ritual or spell to get
a job, whereas trying to make a specific individual go to bed with you would
be wrong. Magick is very much about intent, and if your intent is to get
work, you are not imposing on people, whereas if you were trying to make
somebody do something that they would not naturally do, you are imposing on
    their will.

If you did a ritual to attract love without specifying a person, but opening
yourself to the opportunity to meet someone where love may arise, and to
feel more attractive and better about yourself, you are not imposing, you
are trying to create positive change.

Magick is a commitment to yourself, and it requires determination,
perseverance, strength, openness to change and absence of rigidity, a love
of life (including yourself), and a desire to grow and fulfil your
potential. It may be that you already have all these qualities and do this
already without calling it magick - magick is not about labels, and those
who think and talk as if it is unfortunately put some people off. Magick is
learning about the natural flows of energy in the universe, and working in
harmony with them to effect positive change, both in yourself and in your
    environment.

Some people ask why magick is spelt with a 'k' on the end. This is to
distinguish it from magic, associated in the popular mind with illusionism
and prestidigitation, stage magic. Magick is not about illusion, it is about
creating real change, and the 'k' signifies this. K is the eleventh letter
of the alphabet, i.e. the one beyond ten. Symbolically this is very
powerful, as we work in base ten, and eleven represents the unseen, or
hidden energies - the subtle energies of magick, eleven is considered to be
    the number of magick.

Magickal training and experience bring forth the energies of the
unconscious, and so it is no surprise to see that symbols become more
important as you develop, providing not only the language of dream and the
unconscious, but also helping create a more flexible perception grid of the
universe. To grow spiritually, it is vital that you remain flexible and do
not become dogmatic, rather that you are open to experience and willing to
question your ideas and beliefs as a result of those experiences.

Magick can be a painful process. It is not easy to maintain the discipline
and honest self-critical approach all the time. It can also be hard work
dealing with the energy released without being knocked off balance
sometimes. The important thing in these cases is to remain honest and keep
at it. Nobody said magick was easy! It takes a lot of practice and hard work
and pain, but the rewards are spiritual and mental growth, the joy of life
and the beauty of unconditional love. Beyond the limits there are no limits!
    • ~The Ash Tree- Tree of Life- Influence ~

From the innermost center of your psyche, your good influence radiates far, spreading light.

You are strong enough to stand alone and triumph over difficulties like the rugged Ash tolerating nothing poisonous within its strongly branched
shadow. The medicinal sap within its buds and bark show that you have the power to easily remedy a situation. You firmly cling to what you know is right,
just as the dense, fibrous roots of the Ash grasp the earth that holds them. You are safe from harm in the same way that when the Ash is cut down, it
revives easily and springs up as a young sapling. You may soon be spreading your wings and taking flight to new pastures, like the winged Ash seeds carried by
      the winds of Fall.

The Faeries reminds us that Tree Spirits are very strong and important spirits of nature that are often taken for granted or over looked. As the leaves
fall from some of them at this time of year, like the Ash, remember the trees are resting with their roots deep beneath Mother Earth, but their always willing to listen to
us and help us heal when we go to them and just ask. They're a part of the Universe and the circle of life and they too have their own powers.~

      ~Believe~*!
      • As you progress in your magical workings, you connect more strongly with certain deities than you do with others. One or more of these will become your patron spirits. These are the deities you will work with and frequently feel aligned to. Today is the day to honor these spirits. Spend the whole day personifying the best qualities in your patron deities. Be cheerful, forgiving, strong, and kind in every situation. Look for the joy in everything that happens today, even if it is a stretch. Tonight, when you have quiet time, set up your altar. Take a ritual bath or shower. Cast a circle, and perform a ritual with your patron spirits. Don't write it up ahead of time. Invite them into the circle, and let the ritual be spontaneous. Thank them for the support they've given you. Thank them for the lessons given during the past year, even the difficult ones. Let the way you feel today influence the way you live your life tomorrow and beyond.
        • WHO IS YOUR STAR GODDESS?

          Fri, November 10, 2006 - 7:32 AM
Even in our busy modern world, each and every aspect of our lives and relationships can be energized and strengthened by the uplifting power of the Ancient Mysteries, including the science of Astrology and the philosophy of Magic (also known as magick). Throughout years of study, I've been looking into (and beyond) the archetypical natures of the different gods and goddesses of the Zodiac - which people around the world instantly recognize nowadays as the
12 ancient Star Signs - translated into their human form.
Though it's often overlooked throughout modern astrology today, originally, within most of the ancient schools of knowledge and mysticism, (including those of ancient Babylonia, Greece, Egypt and even China) in the highest levels of study there was a natural merging and crossing over between the two seemingly 'separate' ancient sciences of Astrology/Astronomy and Magic/Mystery. In fact both of these ancient mystical 'sciences' were originally formulated using closely linked methods in both Astrological divination and Magical practice.

As well as connecting with the Moon and the Sun, the many other planetary influences, and the four astrological elements Fire, Water, Air, Earth, (which interestingly are also the magical elements) you can also discover ways of achieving better harmonic balance in your life, through this esoteric and more magical method of looking into the predictions of the Zodiac.

Here's something really interesting for you. You're sure to know which zodiac sign you've been born under, but which kind of Star Goddess are you?
These 12 star goddesses had already been a favourite part of my own magical rituals for many years, and then something interesting started to happen the more and more I studied estoric Astrology and looked into the true origins of Zodiac teachings. I started to feel a strong instinct to see how these particular Goddesses would also connect with the 12 complex energies of the Zodiac. And Lo and Behold they did appear to have a natural astrological counterpart and eventually after a lot of trial and error I was able to match each of them up with their own 'Star Sign' or 'Star Goddess'.
This has brought about some wonderfully accurate and inspirational method of working with both Astrology and Goddess magick. This unique way of aligning the ancient 'Love' Goddesses is from a combination of my own esoteric training and historical research and I and many of my friends (male and female) who I've trained to use this method find it an amazingly effective way of connecting with their own magical energies for both Astrology readings as well as spellcrafting of love charms and many other kinds of ritual inspiration. These specially chosen Love Goddesses are from the various ancient pantheons of the magical old cultures and each resonate with their own archetypical natures and Star power.
To help empower Spells for Love and Romance, These 12 particular Goddesses are also known for their unique sexy 'Love Star' attributes and have been cosmically aligned with the particular relationship and loving natures of each Star Sign of the Zodiac.

So whether you are a guy or a girl, to help you connect with your own special 'Love Star' nature Look Up Your Star Sign and find which ancient Enchantress can help you weave those magical spells for more love and romance.

          ARIES:
The Goddess MAIA personifies your Aries
sense of playfulness and sexy energy. She is the goddess of fertility and fiery passion and was honored by the Ancient Romans with fabulous all night toga parties and grape stomping festivals. She's perfect to ensure that even when you've been up dancing 'till dawn in your bare feet or if you're simply relaxing at home with your chosen one (preferably sipping red wine in front of a raging fire) you always exude that special enchanting glow.

          TAURUS:
Represented by the female bull, the ancient
          Cretian Goddess TAUROPOLOS was honored
for her strength and the ability to bring out
the lust in everyone. Young men would line up,
eagerly showing off their physical prowess by
attempting somersaults through her magnificent horns. One suggestion though, her powers of attraction could be dangerously irresistible, so do be careful when you wear than sexy red underwear, or you may find yourself being chased around a paddock by a Latin gymnast.

          GEMINI:
The goddess of expression and movement
NIKE is a beautiful winged nymph who zooms
through the skies at great speed and adores
hanging out with her groovy Goddess friends. She always makes sure that she's invited to the best A list parties in heaven. (Remember that whenever a snooty doorman is giving you problems) and most importantly she is also the goddess of victory who always gets her man. NIKE'S energy aligns perfectly with your incredible zest for life and love of good company.

          CANCER:
SELENE is the Ancient Roman goddess of the moon and emotional love. Her skin glimmers like silver and legend has it that she carefully bathes in the sea at sunset before travelling across the night sky in a glistening chariot to woo her admirers with wondrous poetry and romance. With your love of expensive perfumes and candle lit baths, SELENE is the perfect goddess for you to call before you invite him over for a seductive night of moonlit passion.

          LEO:
BAST is the original sex kitten. She is an Egyptian goddess who really understands the joy of the hunt, and she aligns perfectly with your sexy feline psyche. It is said that just one look from her golden almond eyes can entice anyone she chooses. A favorite goddess among the women of Nefertiti's time, she is an ancient solar deity who also manifests as a cat or lion and enjoys playfully toying with her lovers before she finally captures them. (Sound familiar?)

          VIRGO:
Often being thought of as an earthy forest nymph, you are also influenced by the gorgeous Star Goddess ASTRAEA, who wisely chose not to hang around with any nasty people on Earth and elegantly rose into the sky to form the constellation of Virgo. She strongly believes in fair play and loyalty but never underestimate her delicate nature or she will be gone in a shimmering flash of stardust. For just like you she can just as easily enjoy flying away on her own (preferably first class) to somewhere exotic and fabulous if a relationship gets out of hand or boring.

          LIBRA:
The Egyptian goddess of Art, femininity and beauty HATHOR is a wonderful flirt who enjoys lilting music and playing to an audience. So next time you get the urge to dance on top of the restaurant table, you'll know it's because your Guardian Goddess was famous for cheering up the moody Gods with an impromptu belly dance around the heavens. Her powers of seduction are among the strongest of all the goddesses so she's very handy to call on to give you a sexy boost after a hard day of balancing everyone's lives.

          SCORPIO:
The mysterious SERKET is one of the most ancient Egyptian goddesses, who also aligns beautifully with your deep understanding of mysticism and karma. She loves to explore secret and out of the way places and adores playing sexy mind games with her chosen lovers. You will definitely relate to her way out dress sense (she loves to wear a stunning scorpion shaped headdress) and her passionate sense of her own seductive spiritual power.

          SAGITTARIUS:
If you can picture your gorgeous self dressed in gold on a dazzling white steed, your hair flying behind you in the wind - then the equine Goddess of ancient Gaul, EPONA is the just the girl for you. She is fiercely independent but never knocks back a chance to be chased to the finish line by some of the fastest men in the west. Just like you she is full of surprises and when she does decide to give them a break and let them catch her, she lets down her luxurious flowing mane and entertains her rapt audience with amazing imitations of lusty bird songs.

          CAPRICORN:
ALMATHEIA was a Roman nymph who very cleverly nourished the God Zeus with goat's milk and honey. One of the most cheeky and ambitious Goddesses, she was rewarded with the gift of everlasting success and tenacity as well as the ability to sustain the world. Her feisty energy fits right in with your amazing talent for whipping up an impressive post- l'amour meal out of the one egg and left- over champagne in your fridge. (Although he'll probably need a bit more nourishing than that to keep up with your incredible stamina)

          AQUARIUS:
The Egyptian sky Goddess NUUT is the
personification of heavenly love power.. Her sensous body is painted with stars and she is able to reach out with her delicate fingers and toes to touch the four cardinal points of the world. (No wonder you can so easily stretch your credit card limit to the North South East and West). Her spiritual energy fits perfectly with the inventive way you can think of three boyfriends at once and your eerie ability to attract interesting lovers from far away places.

          PISCES:
ISIS is the Egyptian Goddess of High Magic. Her dreamy soul and psychic powers, match perfectly with your spiritual awareness but like you she can also be the ultimate love Diva. Her witchy powers are legendary and she was one of the first girls to use glamour and magic spells to entice her lovers. A perfect example is the naughty Cleopatra who was able to seduce Mark Antony and Julius Ceasar, two of the most powerful men on the planet with a lot of help from the magic of ISIS. So if you can get this goddess on your team, your dreams of running off with Mr. Fabulous are not too far off.

              Fri, November 10, 2006 - 9:36 AM
Today's Goddess: The Goddess of Reason
Celebration of The Goddess of Reason (France)

Themes: Logic, Reasoning, Learning the Conscious Mind
Symbol: A Crown of Oak Leaves (representing the seat of the Divine)

About The Goddess of Reason: While this lady had no other specific designation other than the Goddess of Reason,
she dispenses the power of knowledge to those who seek her. The French honored this Goddess with celebration at
Notre Dame, the world's most acclaimed center of scholarship. traditionally, the woman depicting her wore a blue robe
and red cap, then was crowned in laurel at the end of a processional.

To Do Today: To improve conscious awareness and logical abilities, tuck a bay leaf in your shoe today so the
Goddess of Reason walks with you. Or wear any garment with predominantly red or blue coloring to invoke her
              powers through color therapy!

Today is an excellent day to take up any course of study you've been considering. Burn incense blended from dried
sage (for wisdom), rosemary (for memory improvement) and mint (for alertness). If possible, prepare the incense at
noon to accent conscious awareness and the rational self. Move your study tools through the smoke of the incense
              saying,

"Goddess of Reason, see my desire.
              Ignite in me knowledge's fire!"

Finally, was an oak leaf (press it in waxed paper with an iron) and keep it in a book that you are studying.
This keeps reason with you while you read.
              • REMEMBER THIN IS NOT EVERYTHING!!!!!

                Fri, November 10, 2006 - 9:42 AM
If I could wave my magic organizational wand and give every woman a boost to the self-esteem, I would do it by destroying
this particular lie: "Thin is Everything!"

Between now and January 2, there will be tremendous pressure on all women, to look a certain way: thin. Not healthy,
necessarily, or age-appropriate, or attractive, or even fit. No, we're preoccupied with thin and thin alone, and on a standard
                which is cruel.

Only a very few, very genetically unique, very young women can measure up to what we are told is the only "correct" female
body type. There will be tears and anguish before millions of mirrors as we shop for holiday dresses and agonize about our
                bodies.

Be good to that woman in the mirror! She's attractive and interesting and fun to be with, whatever the number on the size tag
of her dress. Do buy an attractive holiday outfit--but see to it that it fits, without requiring a three-week fast to close the zipper.
Support the self-esteem of other women by giving up the competitive weight talk, if just for two months: a true holiday gift of
                sisterly love and acceptance.

There is more to life--and the holiday season--than being thin. Relax, have fun, be yourself, and love those curves!
                • The Goddess created
                  huge sharp-fanged snakes
                  whose veins ran with poison,
who wore their strength like Gods.
She made the dragon, the lion,
                  the madman, the scorpion,
the storm, the mad dog, and
all the monsters of the earth.
                  ~Babylonian Epic Songs

The Goddess is not a simplistically positive figure. The cosmos is composed of light and dark, death and life. Thus the Goddess who represents it must encompass everything. She cannot be limited to what we find useful or attractive; she is not only symbolized by what is fair and lovely to our eyes. In such ancient texts as those of the Babylonians, we see that the Goddess creates negative, unattractive, even terrifying forces and beings as well.

This does not make her evil, or even partially evil. Many Goddess religions are not dualistic; they do not, in other words, divide the world into good and bad, positive and negative. As the familiar Asian symbol of the yin-yang suggests, our world includes both black and white. As the Celtic monk Pelagius pointed out more than sixteen centuries ago, it is not humanity's job to decide what of creation we wish to accept. This is our world, our life, our death. And divine force resides in all of it, even in what seems monstrous to our eyes.

                    A RITE FOR MOTHER EARTH

                    Tue, November 14, 2006 - 4:27 PM
This isn't a spell. It's a magical ritual designed to give energy back to the Earth. You may use it or not
as you wish.Light no candles. Burn no incense. Go to the wilds to perform this..., a place far from the haunts of humans. If this is impossible, work this rite in you place of magic. There, have ready a potted plant or four
plain stones. (Don't use mined quartz crystals.)

Sit on the ground. Place your hands onto the dirt beneath you ( or onto the plant or stones, if inside).
Visualize the Earth from space as a blueish-white sphere of positive, whole, healed energy. Experience it as a living organism. When you're ready, say these or similar words:

                    Pure are the caves and the plains;
                    Pure are the sod and the hills;
                    Pure are the lakes and rills;
                    Pure are the clouds and rains;
                    Pure are the woods and trees;
                    Pure are the valleys deep;
Pure are the bays and seas.

                    Renew your visualization, then begin again;

                    Pure are the birds that fly;
                    Pure are the hounds and bats;
                    Pure are the fish and whales;
                    Pure are the hares and cats;
                    Pure are the owls and snakes;
                    Pure are the stags and deer;
                    Pure are the lizards green;
                    Pure are all creatures here.

Once again, renew your visualization. Feel the Earth. Block all thoughts of the ravages that our species
has subjected to our planet. See the Earth as a healed, whole being. Then say these or whatever words come to mind:

As I receive your energy, now receive mine.

Pour your personal power out through you palms and into the Earth (or the stones or plant). Gently send it spiraling down into our planet, lending it the strength to survive. Willingly give of yourself for a few moments
while visualizing that shining blue planet hanging in the sky.

After a few moments, end the ritual by lifting your hands and standing. (If performing this rite indoors, place the stones or the potted plant onto the ground outside to allow the Earth to absorb the energy.) It is done!
                    .

                    • BEAR CLAN

                      Wed, November 15, 2006 - 8:42 AM
The handsome woman has become my wife
I will be kind to her. Her kin need not come here
to take her back with them. Berries
and berries and berries, all over the hills:
these are my wedding gifts to her. And roots,
roots, roots from the ground. Plenty!
There is nothing I won't do for her.
I have made this song for her, I am
singing it for her, the handsome woman.
                      ~Haida (Southwestern Alaska) Bear Song

In the rich forests of the Pacific Northwest coast, there was a great myth about a woman who went off to live with
bears. She married a bear and bore children who were half-bear, half-human. She was the ancestor of all people in
whose blood the tribal connection to bears was strong and immediate.

We have lost our connection with animals; we no longer speak of ourselves as descended from otter or from turtle.
Yet the wisdom expressed in these ancient tales remains. We are connected with animals, as we are with plants
and clouds and the rocks of distant mountains. Our planet is a system in which each part connects with, and affects,
every other part. There is no action that we can take which does not in some way affect our planet. Though we no
longer articulate our relationship to the bear clan, we are never far away from each other.

                      • Feminine Wisdom

                        Fri, November 17, 2006 - 8:44 PM
                        Maiden, Mother, Crone
A woman's life is filled with stages, milestones ushering in wondrous experiential apexes like the coming of fertility, motherhood, and wisdom. Three aspects, maiden, mother, and crone, have traditionally represented the bounties and new beginnings represented by each stage. The maiden is the aspect of new beginnings, youth, playfulness, spontaneity, and learning. A woman in
the prime of her life can be said to be living under the aspect of the mother, who personifies fertility, strength, and stability. She is the gentle nurturer as well as the fierce lioness. Lastly, and by far the most misunderstood and yet in many ways the most deserving of reverence, is the crone, who holds within her all of the wisdom of the journeys of womanhood within her.

The word crone once meant simply 'wise woman' and, in antiquity, was a term of respect. The crone was a voice of wisdom, an elder, a healer, a counselor, and a teacher, who had traveled the paths of maiden and mother and possessed the accumulated wisdom of youth, adulthood, and old age. She represented the fulfillment of maturity and the knowledge that could only be obtained through a life well lived. The transition to cronehood was a rich and empowering experience, and an important rite of passage, though not one associated with a specific age. Today, though it seems eternal youth has become an obsession, women are reclaiming the status once associated with cronehood by recognizing their evolution and acting upon it. In awakening the crone, as she once was, women are acknowledging the extraordinary wisdom, grace, dignity, and beauty that comes with age.

In embracing the aspect of the crone, it is important to be aware of the fact that age, experience, knowledge, and power are profound gifts that can never be taken from you. Each stage in life is yours and yours alone, and should be embraced as a vital part of life's journey. As you pass lovingly through each stage, coming finally to the remarkable crone, you will gradually be
awakened to the mysteries of each, until you hold within you the keys to them all.

                        • THE SEASON AND HESTIA

                          Tue, November 21, 2006 - 8:01 AM
                          Hestia, highest Goddess among
                          both mortals and immortals,
                          you in your eternal home
are the one most revered of all.
Without you, we can hold no banquet,
for yours is the first drop of sweet wine
poured out on the ground, and
yours is the last drop too, O Hestia.
                          ~Homeric Hymn To Hestia

Hestia was, to the ancient Greeks and to the Romans who called her Vesta, the Goddess who represented the bonding force of family and community. She was represented by the flame of the
hearth, whether that was at home or the sacred fire of the city's center. To her were dedicated the first, and the last, drops of wine at a banquet, for it was because other unifying power that people gathered to celebrate together.

This is the season when we too gather to recognize the power of home family and friends. It is also a season when people most poignantly feel any lack of connection and community. It is thus appropriate to invoke Hestia, then, whether to thank her for providing the supportive connections we need or to ask her to do so. For no one is an island; we need each other to survive and to thrive. True community is not
formed merely of blood, but of shared ideals and values. The lack of community may simply indicate that an individual has not found such connection, just as the presence of a family hearth does not necessarily mean a true flame is burning brightly there. To search for real community is to honor the symbolic
                          significance of Hestia.

                            Sun, November 26, 2006 - 7:43 PM
This stretch helps balance your energy, making your body feel more alive. To start, concentrate on your breathing and how the exercise makes you feel. Assume a kneeling position, feet tucked under your body. Breathing deeply, feel your spine stretch. Raising arms to shoulder level, turn your hands palm up. Bring arms over your head, interlacing your fingers. Slowly stretch to your right side, then left. Lower arms back to your sides, rolling your shoulders slightly. Repeat the stretch, starting with your left side. Return arms to your sides and stretch forward, placing your palms onto the floor and reaching as far as you can. It's a wonderful stretch for balancing energy; do it everyday. Whenever you need to center energy, take a deep breath and recall how it makes you feel.
                            • FORGIVING FOR THE HOLIDAYS

                              Tue, November 28, 2006 - 12:52 AM
"Sometimes what is best to give is forgiveness."

The season of giving is upon us. We begin with Thanksgiving, which has much to say about cooking and little about shopping except for food. However, the day after, called by some Black Friday, is all about shopping for gifts to give. I find it a good day to stay home. Since I purchase my Christmas gifts all year I spend little time in stores at the holidays. I do, however think about giving.

Early in December Stephen and I make up a list of those to whom we wish to mail gifts. We may not see many of these friends in person often, yet they are very dear to us. I also think about those we no longer see or hear from at all. If the parting was not a happy one, these memories may be clouded by a heavy heart. Even though I may have already spent time with my feelings, forgiving the circumstances as well as the people involved, when the holidays come I may need to reinforce what I have already done

Sometimes I feel impatient with this process. Why does it repeat itself endlessly? Yet as I grow less judgmental, I am more able to make allowances for the human frailty of those with whom I once laughed and celebrated life yet who have left my sphere completely. As I forgive them I also forgive myself. Humbly I accept my part in the division between us. With a sigh I bless them and let them go.

The dark hours leading up to Christmas and the Solstice provide a good time for reflection. In life sadness is unavoidable. However in contrast to the joy expressed at the holiday season, it appears unseemly, a ghost at the feast. Yet no beggar was ever turned away from the royal table. Once accepted and given room these memories take their place with all the happy ones and my celebration is all the more bright and filled with love.

Blessings and Best Regards, Tasha Halpert
                              • SACRIFICE

                                Thu, November 30, 2006 - 11:43 AM
The young bear woman set fire
                                across the mountains.
                                Wherever she passed
                                we saw burning mountains.
                                The young bear woman
sought the gods and found them,
                                on the mountain peaks,
with the help of my sacrifice.
                                ~Navaho Song

The concept of sacrifice for spiritual reasons has been virtually lost in contemporary culture. Today, the word only has negative connotations, connected with victimization and cruelty and needless pain. Yet the offering of sacrifice has been part of most religious traditions. Ancient peoples offered up something they valued - for it would not be a sacrifice if it were worthless - so that spring would come, or order would be maintained in the cosmos, or a beloved child saved from death. Sacrifice may be a difficult spiritual practice today, but the wisdom of the ages calls us to consider it.

                                    Tue, December 5, 2006 - 8:38 AM
When I feel I have enough—whether of food or of money in the bank, I feel happy. Yet having enough is purely subjective and cannot actually be measured by any outside standard. When I focus my attention on the glass that is half full rather than half empty I can be content. It does not matter how much or how little is in the glass, if I wish to see it as enough, if I feel it is enough, it is.

Children see a shiny new toy on television and want it. At a spring yardsale Stephen encountered a child selling his expensive toys at very low prices. When he asked him why, the child replied that he was bored with them. And when did he receive them? "For Christmas," came his reply. It is difficult for children to value what they have when there is so much more out there for them to want.

The Christmas when I was seven my Uncle Oliver, an actor and thus a very romantic figure to me came for our Christmas Eve celebration. He brought me a huge balloon in the shape of a blimp, with a big red bow around it and set it down in the hall until it was time to open presents. As we were singing carols around the tree there was a loud bang. We all rushed into the hall only to see a limp piece of rubber attached to a large red ribbon.

The pleasure of being with my Uncle soon overcame my regret for the burst present. What mattered was that he was visiting and it was Christmas. This and other remembrances of family gatherings and celebrations glisten brightly in my memory. I remember few if any of the gifts I received. What I do remember is the happiness and joy. Unlike the forgotten gifts, it is within my heart to stay.

Regardless whatever else may be happening, may your happiness be present and available in your heart.

                                    Wed, December 6, 2006 - 12:14 PM
The moth was once a creepy crawly
                                    wormy munchy crunchy creature
That chewed its way away from grubhood
To discover growth and an unfamiliar shape.

                                    Following its thread of life
                                    Devouring its bread of life
Converting that to more of itself,
It grew and changed and laid its eggs
                                    to become more of itself.

Change is the law of life.
To grow is to keep from decaying.
To stop growing is to begin to die.
To die is to change and grow again into oneself.

There is no Other, only One
That grows and changes into forms and shapes
                                    diverse and wonderful.
Life never ceases; what we call death
Is only a form of life we cannot see.

Is the moth aware of mothness?
Are its wings familiar? Are ours?
What we call change is only
that with which we are unfamiliar
                                    As being ourselves.

                                      Mon, December 11, 2006 - 10:33 AM
Wake up, people! Open your eyes! Wake up!
Move quickly, like people of light!
Draw clouds forth from the sky's quarters.
Draw clouds full of snow to us here!
Snow falling now means water in summer.
                                      Come, ice, cover my fields!
In four days the festival starts, when we assemble
to call down snow in abundance.
~Pueblo Dawn Call To Winter Feast

Throughout the world, the darkest time is also the time of the greatest celebration. One reason is simple:
busy people, bustling about to gather enough food to survive through the winter, have less time to tell stories
and to feast and to sing. But there is another reason that is not so obvious: the belief that the activities of human
beings during the winter somehow empower the earth to keep turning on its axis, progressing slowly toward the new seasons yet to come.

Stories have traditionally been vital in this quest for continued order in the universe. Each winter, people would gather to hear the old myths recited by the hearth-fire. This was the children's school, the time to learn the rules by which
humankind was expected to live. It was a continuing education program for adults, too, who each year heard the familiar stories anew, with deeper meaning. But the stories did more than just educate people. In a mysterious
and magickal way, they also linked humans to the cosmos. Just as the sun set at the anticipated time, so we were to tell the right story on the right night. We thus were bound to the cycle of the seasons in a deep and meaningful way.

                                        Shining queen of hell.
                                        Erishkigal, you give us
                                        the best praise there is.
                                        The shining queen has hair
like leeks, gives birth without ceasing,
crying out, "ow! ow! ow! ow!"
                                        The shining queen of heaven
gives the best praise, crying out
as she gives birth without ceasing.
                                        ~Babylonian Hymn

Birth is not painless, whether it is a physical birth, an emotional one, or a spiritual one. But it is not exactly painful either. Any creative process takes intense concentration and furious labor. It strains us to our very core. But is that pain? Many birthing mothers experience something like ecstasy as they give birth. So do many artists as they create new work. So do those undergoing an important inner transformation.

The birthing mother, the artist, the transforming psyche, call "ow!, ow!" as the process unfolds. But there is exhilaration in that sound, as much as there is complaint. If the literal and metaphoric pangs of birth were more painful than the rewards of a child - or artwork or inner change - are attractive, the human race would have died out long ago. But mothers go on having children, artists go on creating art, we all go on enduring inner pain in order to transform ourselves into something greater. The rewards outweigh the pain - and the pain can sometimes be inexpressibly hard.

                                          Fri, December 15, 2006 - 2:56 AM
                                          Whoever loves Wisdom loves life,
and those who seek her will be joyful.
Whoever embraces her will be raised up.
Wherever she enters will be blessed.
Whoever obeys her will be a sure judge.
Whoever attends to her will live securely.
If you have faith in her, you will obtain Wisdom,
                                          and so will your descendants.
But first you will walk with her
on narrow paths, fearful and terrified.
First you will be tested by Wisdom,
                                          with her disciples and orders.
But then she will gladden you
and tell you all her secrets.
                                          ~Sirach 4: 11-18

It is not easy to become wise. All the great traditions tell us that. Whether it be Buddhism or Christianity, yoga or tantra, these spiritual paths tell us that to gain wisdom, we must discipline ourselves. We must struggle to reach understanding. And along the way, we will find ourselves tested in ways we never imagined.
Many are those who give up on the path to wisdom. They wish to be wise, but they wish even more to be comfortable.

No one needs to be ashamed of giving up the search for wisdom, or of taking a break in the struggle. Inner transformation is difficult, and often painful. And there is no way to predict who will have the courage and the tenacity to keep struggling to achieve wisdom. It is no use to look at others, whether in envy or in pride, for their
struggles are their own. One who seems wise at twenty may still be just that wise at sixty. One who seems wise at sixty may become rigid and brittle by seventy. We can only judge ourselves as we struggle to find our own path to wisdom.

A humourous (and Pagan) revision of the classic Footprints in the Sand poem. Credit for the original is often cited as Anonymous, but there are some references to Mary Stevenson as the author. I still don't know who wrote the Buttprints version.

                                            Buttprints in the Sand
One night I had a wondrous dream,
One set of footprints there was seen,
The footprints of the Goddess they were,
But mine were not along the shore.
But then some stranger prints appeared,
and I asked Her, "What have we here?
These prints are large and round and neat,
But much too big to be from feet."
"My child," She said in somber tones,
"For miles I carried you alone.
I challenged you to walk in faith,
But you refused and made me wait."
"You would not learn, you would not grow,
The walk of faith, you would not know,
So I got tired, I got fed up,
And there I dropped you on your butt.
"Because in life, there comes a time,
When one must fight, and one must climb,
When one must rise and take a stand,
Or leave their butt prints in the sand."

                                              I believe-
that we don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

                                              I believe-
that no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

                                              I believe-
that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

                                              I believe-
that you can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

                                              I believe-
that it's taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

                                              I believe-
that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

                                              I believe-
that you can keep going long after you can't.

                                              I believe-
that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

                                              I believe-
that either you control your attitude or it controls you.

                                              I believe-
that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place.

                                              I believe-
that money is a lousy way of keeping score.

                                              I believe-
that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

                                              I believe-
that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

                                              I believe-
that sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

                                              I believe-
that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

                                              I believe-
that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had and what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

                                              I believe-
that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

                                              I believe-
that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.

                                              I believe-
that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

                                              I believe-
that just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

                                              I believe-
that you shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

                                              I believe-
that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

                                              I believe-
that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you..

                                              I believe-
that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

                                              I believe-
that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

                                              I believe-
that the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

                                                    Winter

In fall, the earth begins the process of releasing all the things she has been holding onto throughout spring and summer, and by midwinter she has let everything go. She sits clean and undecorated in her simplicity, free of the frenzy of life that defines her in the warmer seasons. There is a quiet humility about the earth in the winter months, as animals and people retreat inside to escape the wet and sometimes freezing cold that takes hold. Inside our homes we create abundance and warmth in response to being effectively kicked indoors by the dark and cold that permeate the outdoors.

We burn fires in fireplaces and make heavy, hot foods to keep our bodies warm and insulated. We may find ourselves sleeping longer hours and yearning for downtime, just like the animals deep inside their caves and warrens taking a winter-long nap. Even if we live in a warmer climate, the longer nights and shorter days have the same effect on our cycles. If we surrender to this time as nature intended, we allow ourselves to slow down, sleep more, and lower the volumes on our busy minds. At the same time, we crave company in our dwellings, and the insulated warmth of the hearth tends to bring people together, creating more warmth and fostering connections that last through the coming year.

We laugh, eat, and talk, sleep, or catch up on reading, while outside our windows the earth grows dark earlier and stays cold longer, accepting as always of the process of change and her place within it. We might remember to learn from her as she so gracefully surrenders to the emptiness that precedes all form, the peace that precedes activity, the darkness that precedes the light. For everything she gives and teaches, we might offer a blessing, extending a goodly portion of the gratitude of this season her way, holding her in our hearts and thanking her for our very lives.
                                                    • THE TORTOISE AND THE HARE~

                                                      Thu, December 27, 2007 - 10:20 AM
                                                      At Your Own Pace

The classic tale of the tortoise and the hare reminds us that different people take life at different speeds and that one way is not necessarily superior to another. In fact, in the story it is the slower animal that ends up arriving at the destination first. In the same way, some of us seem to move very quickly through the issues and obstacles we all face in our lives. Others need long periods of time to process their feelings and move into new states of awareness. For those of us who perceive ourselves as moving quickly, it can be painful and exasperating to deal with someone else's slower pace. Yet, just like the tortoise and the hare, we all arrive at the same destination, together, eventually.

People who take their time with things are probably in the minority in most of the world today. We live in a time when speed and productivity are valued above almost anything else. Therefore, people who flow at a slower pace are out of sync with the world and are often pestered and prodded to go faster and do more. This can be not only frustrating but also counterproductive because the stress of being pushed to move faster than one is able to move actually slows progress. On the other hand, if a person's style is honored and supported, they will find their way in their own time and, just like the tortoise, they might just beat the speedier, more easily distracted person to the finish line.

It's important to remember that we are not actually in a race to get somewhere ahead of someone else, and it is difficult to judge by appearances whether one person has made more progress than another. Whether you count yourself among the fast movers or as one of the slower folks, we can all benefit from respecting the pace that those around us choose for themselves. This way, we can keep our eyes on our own journey, knowing that we will all end up together in the end.
