Sahira is an accomplished and innovative dancer, as well as the director of Synergy Rhythm and Dance in the OTHER Bloomington (IL). She'll be teaching workshops on Jazz Fusion and Popping & Locking. She'll also be headlining in a bellydance show that evening at the Fine Arts building on the IU campus.

Space is still available in the workshops, and we're still accepting requests to perform in the show!

Yes, we're at it again! The Waldron loved our shows so much for Mosaic II that they don't want to wait a whole year to have us back! So, we are presenting Mosaic III with special guest artist Karim Nagi. Show is Saturday, August 30th, and the workshops are the 31st. He is teaching the Dancer/Drummer Communication workshop from 12-2pm, and Finger Cymbals from 3-5pm. 3:00-5:00pm Turkish workshop with Deniz: Learn the differences between Turkish and Cabaret Style dancing! Learn combos and techniques to move to the music. Bring your veils!

I am looking for street performers for Mardi Gras- Feb 2 from 7-2am. Obviously, I need you guys but was hoping you could send a plea out to your contact list as well for anyone who would like to be a part of things: fire spinners, knife throwers, sword dancers, drummers, stilt walkers, acrobates, magicians...ect, you get the picture...we need a carnivale in the streets! Any ideas?

We are changing things around this year to include some HAT (huge ass tents) with heat and getting rid of the big outdoor stages in place of jumbotrons projecting images from New orleans webcams! Hopefully it will help us control that uncontrolable weather thing a little better! We will still have performers outside, but if we can get enough people involved, hopefully we can rotate folks from outside to inside so that there is always something going on but noone gets frostbite!

Carenza & Wyld Fyre Classes

Starting in December Carenza will be teaching mini workshops on Sunday for two hours (schedule is on website) The first hour will be combinations and conditioning, the second hour choreography. Charge $15. Private & Semi Private Lessons will be available on these weekends. New students-Established troupes are welcome to sign up!
Also, Wyld Fyre, our favorite poi artist is coming back to Muncie!! Starting Thursday December 6.
6-7 Drills for Belly Dancers, Open to all levels her house of pain will help tighten up those muscles and put definition on your movements!
7:15-8:15pm Yoga-Suitable for all levels, and a great addition to any belly dance regimen.
Wyld Fyre is also available for private and semi private lessons on Thursdays in Belly Dancing, Yoga, and/or Poi!!

An awsome musical resource...

In an attempt to find as much music to belly dance to as possible, I've turned to the Music Genome project. It's also known as Pandora and it's a free (or you can opt to pay) site that has a ridiculous amount of music that has been broken down by certain musical markers. I started to dig around for new music to belly dance to by entering in Niyaz as a base of what I was looking for and have come across some amazing music (I also have my goth "radio station" that has Switchblade Symphony as a basis for comparison!). You just pick an artist or song that you like the sound of and Pandora will search out other artists and songs with similar markers. Sometimes they branch out a bit, so don't be surprised if after hours of listening you come across something from a genre you didn't think you'd have to deal with (My partner started out with Covenant, which is a Goth/Industrial band if you didn't know, and eventually got a hip-hop song! LOL).

I highly suggest this site(http://pandora.com/) for those of you who might be looking for some new music to dance to...

Fundraiser for Bongo Barry!

Muncie's infamous Bongo Barry (Barry Kem) whose magnificent drumming back in Dave's Alley in Downtown Muncie has almost come to define warm weather weekends in Munice, has suffered an episode of accute appendicitis, necessitating an emergency appendectomy, from which (the good news is) he is recovering nicely. The bad news (of course) is that the medical expenses are rising rapidly, and are clearly outpacing his assets. Please honor this dedicated drummer by attending a benefit to raise money to help with his medical expenses to be held Friday evening - Oct. 12, 2007 - at Doc's Music Hall on Walnut Street in downtown Muncie.

I am working on getting the times and admission charges and will post here when I receive it!

CC will be there, we love our BB!! Come join us!

Belly Dance Carnivale is swiftly approaching! This is a combination email as it saves me time.I have labeled them so skip to what applies to you! To all, please make sure that your name is spelled correctly as we are having tshirts made. Bring any promo material you would like to promote your upcoming events and/or services! Setup begins at 5pm, with everything ready to go by 7pm when the public will be allowed to enter. Also, please arrive at least a half hour prior to your scheduled performance time. Everyone knows I like to allot the dancers plenty of time to get ready, please don't abuse this policy!

Vendors:
If you are still interested in vending, I need to know now and your fee needs to be paypaled to me asap! We need to assign everyone spots, if you aren't confirmed I can't guarantee you a spot. Remember that you are responsible for providing your own tables, chairs, tents, etc. Fee is $50 for a 10x10 space downtown.
I am opening the Sunday workshop for 2 additional vendors, if interested, fee is $50 per table and again you provide your own tables. Paypal to carenzascaravan@aol.com

Musicians & Freakshow Foley (Liz please forward this on to them):
I did not have a set time for anyone except Foley, so you are allotted a half hour timeslot. If you feel you need additional time, please let me know asap. All bands are in charge of their own setup/tear down, providing whatever sound equipment or anything else you might need. The stage will need to be free of everything after your set in preparation for the next band. Please adhere to your times so that the next group has enough time to set up. I have confirmation for Easy Lei's, Malachi & Foley I believe, as long as the red horse is still a go and everyone's happy, your schedule should not change. If you have any questions or requests, please let me know.

Exhausted & Content

I am exhausted! What a weekend, after the daily grind at work all week! Went to the Nile on Friday night and had a ball, one of my favorite gigs as even though weekly, it is always different but comforting with the regulars that come to watch. Saturday we spent the day at Penrod and got to dance to the band playing behind us, there was some videographers and photographers so ISAMETD got some props. It was fun visiting with those I don't get to see very often. That evening we were at the Heorot, aside from one incident, which was fine after I asserted my a-thor-i-ty! Funnier afterwards when people were saying I could tell you were pissed by how fast you were shaking your finger at the guy. Aside from that, the evening was a success with some very cool new songs by il troubadore. The Greek one is my favorite now, of course stopping myself from saying OPA! during the pauses was very difficult. Didn't get to bed until the wee hours of the morning, dragging myself back up and out to Indy to play with il troubadore at another gig, which was the most interesting by far. Very eclectic group, very warm and inviting and enjoyed performing for them. After that I came home to celebrate my wedding anniversary...7 years...wowsah! I am a wooped pup, but feel like I have danced out a lot of stress. Hope everyone has a great week, anyone going next weekend to Lexington for the Rachel Brice, Mardi Love, forget who else I am taking from...that's sad lol.

September oh september..... We've got something to do every weekend!

This saturday, we will be dancing at Penrod Arts Festival with ISAMETD. So look for our booth. You'll know it's us because there will be several gorgeous belly dancers shimmying away the day!

Later on that evening we'll be hanging out at the muncie music festival. We will be dancing at the Heorot, along with our favorite 16th century rock band Il Troubadore!

So that's our weekend! Next weekend we'll be in Lexington for the Indigo. Anyone else going?
Then of course we've got belly dance carnivale on the 22nd with Moria and Sonia Workshops. Freak show foley has been added to the line up! cool!

Is september busy for other people too??

If I have not responded to anyone I apologize, but I tore a muscle in my lower back. Which wouldn't be so bad, but with the other problems I am having girlie wise, kinda puts a hurting on me. However the muscle relaxers are lovely >:~)
On to the good stuff..Laylia has agreed to come perform for us that night, along with Wyld Fyre swinging her poi and various other fire toys. The Red Camel will be vending at both workshops for all your tribal jewelry needs. Our makeup artist will be back with brand new colors. Henna and massage vendors too! If I missed you, give a shout out, because as I said..these pills are quite lovely..but not good for brain functioning.

Laylia, hope you're feeling better and made it home relatively quickly! Celeste I enjoyed chair dancing with you! Everyone's performances were amazing, thank you so much for sharing your art with us. Kudos to everyone for getting up and dancing, it was a blast!!
Wasn't it awesome having the makeup artist onsite? I am in love with the concept of someone else doing it and not stressing to hurry and do it myself before a show. I am trying to get her to come for Belly Dance Carnivale, if anyone else would like to be a vendor or part of the street carnivale, email me!

Thoughts on Red Tour 2

In live art, I have learned... much of what happens is fortuitous. When I put an event out there.... I am never quite sure how it will come off. There are factors that we can control. There are some we can't. There are dozens of artists convening in one place, at one time (we hope.) There is the intent to make art. A thing of beauty, that stirs the soul.

Red Tour is that!

For all of it's seeming glitches... performers arriving late or cancelling, no rehearsals with both bands together, the long and exhausting drives.... it has "come together." The performances at Carenza's last weekend were proof to me that the universe smiles upon our efforts.

There could have been no better venue for the Red Tour! Carenza's color scheme, which is exceptionally warm... with all the hues of red, orange and yellow.... provided an stunning backdrop for our "Red" art. In all the vids and pics, you can see how the light of the space played upon the skin of the dancers to make them appear red... in a subtle, yet profound way. No make-up required! I honestly think that Shiva Raye and WyldFyre should go back there, after the fact, to make some professional versions of the ritual art they brought to being.

By now you have all seen clips of their opening acts. Unfortunately, there isn't any film of the closing number where they dance together..... and that would be awesome to have! There, at Carenza's.... where the warm, red light plays upon the artists....

Thanks so much for making this space available to us! And thanks for assembling an incredible team of artists to dance with us! Let's do it again some time!!

Had a wonderful time at Carenza's Caravan

I had a wonderful Saturday at Carenza's Caravan she welcomed me warmly. She has a beautiful space with great energy I suggest if you ever get to go to her place for a workshop please do, you will truly feel comfortable and enjoy yourself. Then I had the honor of dancing with LI Troubldre these are musicians with great passion for their music I truly enjoyed dancing with them. They both are warm and friendly and welcomed me graciously ,at the last minute I might add. Everyone did a wonderful job dancing with them Jennifer Rose did a fantastic job she had passion and pizzazz beautiful dance, I guess it kind of goes with her personality.Carenza has grown into a beautiful dancer, and many others did a wonderful job.Thanks to snakes rising for introducing me to some wonderful people.

As many of you know, Chyanne's mother has AML which is an acute form of leukemia. Even with medical insurance (they do not pay for everything) she has still acquired quite a bit of medical bills so we are trying to raise some money to help her pay for them.

This event will be held at her mother’s house in the backyard so it will be informal and everyone is welcome !!!!!! There will be belly dancing, bake sale and we will also be raffling off some cool items. For those of you that have seen bellydancing before you already know how much fun it will be and for those of you that haven't this will be a great opportunity to check it out!! We are recommending a donation of $5 per person but we will not turn anyone away, just give whatever you can.

Excited to see all the Fort Waynian's!!

Hoop time!

8pm to 9pm (or so)
Minnetrista Cultural Center...on the BIG green area out back.

I'll provide the hoops if you don't have one and may even have some for sale (ranging in price from $5 to $20), but don't feel you MUST buy one, I'll continue bringing hoops for others to use.

If it's been a rainy day just keep watch on the weather because if it clears up by 8pm I'll be out there with the hoops. Also, on the first day I'll try to give everyone a card with all my info on it.....just in case.

Obviously bring some water for drinking. You'll get thirsty and I don't want anyone dehydrating.

Wear clothes in which you'll feel comfortable.

If you're late, don't sweat it. If you're early....wait....I might be running late. I'm driving back into town from Gas City....where I work until 7pm....then running home to fill up the water bottle, change clothes, and maybe grab a snack.

Speaking of snacks...you may not want to be full when you hoop. Since the hoop rotates in the gastric area (stomach and abdomen) it may feel uncomfortable. Eat about an half hour before hooping......if you want. This is a personaly judgement call. It's all up to you.

"We are going to be having a trunk show with our belly dance line at a downtown Indianapolis location on the afternoon on Saturday May 25th from 1:00 PM - 7:00 PM."

Thanks for hosting the drum workshop and being a great host at that! Also a big thanks to everyone for making me feel welcome in a new place. Dinner at the Heorot was a heap of fun (Sprecher root beer on tap?!? Awesome!) and the performances were loaded with lots of talented dancers! Maybe something's in the water up there...excellent! :-) Setting in with Il Troubadore was good fun as well even though I didn't know the tunes!

I didn't see much of the first half of the show because I was backstage waiting my turn, but the second half of the show was fabulous. Hello everyone my name is Jason. Y`all know Molly and Pali I'm sure.. I'm new to tribe.net and I have no friends. I'm with the Stinkee Beetle folks - www.stinkeebeetletribe.com - their web computer guy. I also work with Fire Whips with our group. There's photos of us all on the webpage above.

Perhaps it's silly but - and I know Molly is going to ask me when I'm going to come out with it - but I think it'd be VERY interesting to incorporate some sort of Bellydance routine that incorporated the fire whip. Firewhips are unique in that they make big fire but they can flow with graceful curves and can be used like poi.

I'm still learning various poi moves.

I had a blast tonight! Two swords up to all the students who showed up at the drum circle tonight! Thank you to all the drummers!!!
Don't forget about the Hafla at Khoury's on the 15th.
Carenza's Caravan will be at Movie Night on Friday the 21st, corner of charles and walnut (Centerstage)
Middle Eastern Mayhem the next day at CC Dance Studio!
Delaware County Fair the next Saturday from 5-6pm!

Thank you to everyone that pitched in to make Badriya's Benefit a success! We were able to raise (roughly) $3,050!!! Thank you!!!
The music was amazing and the performers breathtaking!!

"Il Troubadore took the audience from frenzied to mesmerized. They played a set beautiful to both eye and ear. The performance was an invigorating take on Albanian and Bulgarian folk music. Cellist Jon Silpayamanant made the sound of his instrument soar as his horse-hair bow began to unravel. But the instrumentals nearly came second to belly dancer Carenza bint Asya, who proved not only captivating, but somewhat death defying. Hips shook and stomach muscles ripped while Asya kept, of all things, a machete placed on top of her head. While impressive, the concept was stressful."

Call for artists and performers of all varities

Eden Staff and Promotions is a non-profit organization who seeks to support local community charities with an emphasis on GLBT groups, and youth programs. Last year our first event was held called EDEN: Celebrating Life and Diversity at Talbott Street on 3/29/06. The event featured fire dancers, acrobatics, a decor theme, and three dj's (trance, industrial, house).

The EDEN event is fusion of art, culture, and music. The point of EDEN is to draw in Indianapolis' alt communities for a night of celebration.

We are seeking performers who would like to be apart of next years (07) event, as well as potential sponsors. If interested please write: eden.in.indy@gmail.com.

So far, has to be the mandolin festival. I think it's safe to say both sides never thought bluegrass and belly dancing would be at the same event. It was fun! Odd...but fun...next???
