Hey, all! I'm very excited to announce that the next Belles of Bedlam performance is going to be in just a few short days! We've done faires for the Big Bear Valley Renaissance society before, but this year they're excited to present their very first Victorian Faire! This coming Saturday and Sunday, July 5th & 6th, join the Belles, Sportive Tricks, and a wide variety of other exciting shows and entertainments!

Here is a little more info:

The Big Bear Valley Renaissance Society, Inc. is delighted to announce our first Victorian Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2008, at our permanent site on the north shore of Big Bear Lake!

Hosted in the lovely little town of Fawnskin, the Victorian Festival is a day in Charles Dickens London: a city filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Come join us for an adventure in this elegant era with hundreds of costumed players in music halls, pubs and dance parties. Explore our winding lanes, finding trinkets and treasures while surrounded by enticing aromas of hearty foods and the joyous sound of music in the air.

Some of the activities will include a Victorian Tea, Tea with the Queen, and readings by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and other literary artists of the 19th century. We will have demonstrations of the Gatling gun, cannon, and a battle of the Queen's Royal Army! Entertainment, such as the always exciting (and often titillating) Belles of Bedlam, will also be provided on five stages throughout the day. And, for the younger set, we will have the children's craft & game area.

While not all visitors come in costume, a great many do. The highlight of the event, the Grand Masque Ball under the stars on Saturday night, is a costumed affair, although a non-costumed gallery is available, if you would like to witness the glamorous spectacle.

Hope to see you there!

Erin Duggan Saunders (Dove Rosey/Newcastle) and Meegan Ochs (Newcastle) are the ones planning it. They are selling tickets for food and activities at the door. Prizes are given for the games, there are lots of themed activities, and organic food. I will be doing knightings, there is a tea party with Alice, games with the Queen of Hearts and the 3 little Pigs. It is a fund raiser for the pre-school there (where Erin and Meegan have their kids) but is also to encourage reading.

We will have out flyers for the Faire as well.

Sorry for the length of this and for the cross posting on several tribes, but after many agonizing months, we've made the really hard decision that we're going to be leaving California in the next month or so, probably not to return. If we do return, it won't be for several years...

The short version of the back story is that I was laid off from my engineering tech job last May. We've been living mainly off our savings and stock sales since then, but you can only go so long that way. I've been doing the high tech shuffle here in the "Valley of the Molten Sand" since '82 and I'm simply burned out on it... After this most recent lay off with me at 47 years old, as my mental and physical abilities have changed with age, I've lost my confidence to be employed in the only field I've worked in since entering adulthood. Now, if I even seriously think about re-entering the high tech workforce, I tense up to the point of starting to physically shake and tears start welling up... The few interviews I have forced myself to go on haven't turned out very well since it's pretty hard to sell oneself to a potential employer when one doesn't believe in oneself...

Anyway, as our resources here are starting to dwindle, we've got to do something soon or we'll wind up losing the equity in our house. To that end, we've made the exceedingly tough decision to sell our house here in San Jose and buy a house free-and-clear on more land back east, probably in the Ozark foothills of northern Arkansas. The whole financial equation changes drastically with no mortgage payments...

Now, before any of you get started on ribbing me about Arkansas, let me just say that I don't take it too well... Or, to practice for once I get there, "Ah don't cotton too kindly to folks sayin' thangs 'bout where Ah'm a'going an Ah ain't gonna stand fer it!" (I'm sure it won't take too long for me to get my Southern Drawl back... too bad it comes with all the other southern drawbacks.) I'm also working on getting one of my aunts to legally adopt Sherri... I mean, we're already married, but we'd fit in a smidge better if'n she was my cousin, too...

So, Jingly Bits will no longer be "bringing music to the quieter corners of the shire" at NCRF or any of the smaller circuit faires in California... We'd like to thank Molly for giving us the opportunity to grace the Curtain Call stage at Casa for the last couple of years. It was cool having Martin and the Naughty Minstrels as our warmup band last year... They did a pretty good job, but had a tendancy to lull the audience to sleep and then we'd get to wake them up!

Casa was (and always will be) our home faire. We started participating there as Friends of Faire under REC in 2003 and Arline (recently retired Mistress of the FOF Buttery) told Donnie (GM of Danse Macabre) that there was a new mandolin player in town... Danse Macabre asked me to "audition" and I was told by someone that "it's such an honour to be invited to join Danse Macabre!" (You know who you are and I've been paying for your statement ever since, thank you very much.) My "audition," which was possibly the only one ever given to a musician joining Northern Danse Macabre, consisted of Donnie and Ted asking:

"Can you play an A-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "Can you play an E-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "Can you play a D-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "You're in the band!"

We jazzed up the Bones tunes and hit the streets of Casa hard, with mandolin machine heads pointing to the sky... That was in 2003, and I pushed the Bones to do more shows in 2004. We wound up doing 26 weekends of faire in 2004, mostly as Macabre and with me acting as GM on several occasions. Sherri and I started up Jingly Bits at SLO in 2005 because organizing the Bones to work as many shows as we wanted to was prohibitive. We also wanted to be out on the streets interacting with our patrons more than is customary when one is Dead...

Jingly Bits has been playing the streets and stages of events from Pembrooke, Willits, Calaveras, and Ione, and down to SLO, Visalia, Fresno and Bakersfield ever since. During that time, if we've offended anyone's senses or historical sensibilities and thus made their snobbish teeth itch, I would like to apologize. I won't actually apologize, but really, I'd like to... Personally, I've never been snobbishly period, though I have been periodically snobbish... Even though many of our songs weren't exactly period, (can you say "Flogging Molly?") I think we brought a lot of high energy to all of our performances. I know we put everything we could into them and the folks that did watch us seemed to enjoy it a lot.

Speaking of folks watching us, I'd also like to take a moment to thank all our fans... Oh, the appreciative roar of the crowd and the loving crush of our adoring fans... To all our fans, we're going to miss both of you terribly...

Anyway, no more Jingly Bits at faires in northern California,

BUT!!!

You have ONE LAST chance to catch us before we go. The day after we made the excruciating decision to leave, we were offered a paying pub gig! On St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17th, Jingly Bits will be giving their final performance in California. From 6pm until at least 8pm, we will be on the patio of O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in downtown San Jose. It's a pub, after all, so Master Thomas unfortunately can't be there with us, but we would be honored if some of you were to make it to the show to see us off.

It's hard to believe our run as Jingly Bits is over in California, but it is. We WILL be continuing on, and are already gatelisted for a faire in April in Joplin, Missouri. Once we get settled in after the move, there are several other faires within a hundred mile radius... We'll also probably try to work TRF at some point. There are also numerous SCA events in the area... I'm going to be taking some of the techie stuff I can do and apply it to woodworking and making period furniture, games, toys, weapons, and household items that would fit in at ren faires, SCA events and even Civil War re-enactments. (One of my prototype folding chairs and 20 of my lucets were supposed to be with a vendor at the Sonora Celtic Faire this weekend, by the way, but we've not heard how they did or if the vendor even made it there...) When or if we come back to CA, it might very well be as vendors...

Again, sorry this is so long winded, but you'd expect nothing less from me, would you? So, I'll sign off now... It would be far too strange and too painfully strained to hear or read blogs about how great this faire was or how fantastic the after-hours stuff was at that faire or what's planned for the other faire... To that end, I'll be leaving all the NorCal faire related tribes I'm part of and will be deleting most of the faire folks on my friends list. No offense is meant, but it would be too painful to be reminded over and over again of what we had to leave behind... If you notice your friend count dropping by one in the next few days, it was probably me...

Thanks to all that have made this long strange trip as wild a ride as it has been... We'd love to see some of you at O'Flaherty's on St. Patrick's Day. If you can't make, that's fine and understandable and we'll just wish nothing but the best for you as you rot in Hell... If you can make it, that'd be great! (If you do go, park in the garage across San Pedro street from the pub and get the barkeep to validate your ticket...)

Take care and may all your journeys be safe ones, where ever they might take you.

Goodbye, my friends...

Greetings all.
For any of you wonderful people who knew Jim Huitt at NCRF, our dear friend was taken far to early from us. For almost 4 years Jim fought the big C with all his might. On March 11, at home surrounded by his wife and family, he peacefully passed on to Summerland. We will miss his love, light and happy, free spirit. Its a deep, hard hitting loss for me and our faire family.
Jim and I met when we both started working faire 12 years ago, first , hawking Leather Roses at Blackpoint ( we had so much fun!! ) and then finally settling in with the great family at Oudeman Art Glass. We've been close friends ever since! Jim LOVED the faire and spent hours helping Miguel, our Captain, build the booth, then spent every weekend at the booth, then spent hours helping tear it down. We will miss him more than words can say. I know many people at faire knew him, or knew of him, so please come by the booth, Oudeman Art Glass, any time during faire this year and tell us your stories of Jim.
The first weekend, we will be having some sort of party in his honor, those details to come.
Yesterday, we had a private party with his family and friends to honor his life! The tequila flowed, tye-die was everywhere and our love for him filled every inch of the space. WE WILL MISS YOU BIG JIM!

Brightest Blessings to all who read this, thank you for your time.
peace ,love and light~ Andrea ( aka- the Autumn Goddess)

We are hoping to get people who would like to be either part or full time, but have a keen interest in acting out what the famous Bards of the time wrote in the language of the authors.

Hi folk,
I was perusing a thread about RenFaire, and there was a question posted by Michael about characters not being identified with pics and bios. It was quandried why this hasn't been done.

I tried to post but for some reason it hasn't hit so I thought I would at least put it here where some of you who are part of both Faires could see. The truth should be made known.

So.

PlayFaire DOES have this information not only available to the public but to those that work the Faire.

There is a page that is "Theme Characters" on the Web site that houses pictures, brief bios and such. There is also a briochure with map at front gate with the top 10 also listed for audience members who might be interested. For the actors, Molly introduces each theme character and GM and all their pertinent info at the manditory meeting first day of Faire so that you can not only see our shining smiley faces, but our costumes (which are far more identifiable in some cases) as well.

So why is there confusion? Are we missing some important people who are key to the show? If so can we get this info to Entertainment so that they can be added?

Who do you think has been left out and why? It might be good info for the ED to know so that we can get this updated in time for Northern.

And play nice, gentle readers, as this is a public forum and not all of our dirty little secrets need to be aired out for all to see.

Knowledge is power!

remember your friends and family from faire this year as you say your thank you's and well wishes this holiday season.

i copied this from Vicki's blog...

This message brings sad news from our community. It is with deep sadness we pass on the news that Sandy Nakazono has passed on. She was very ill last week and when she did not show up to work for Ray and Michelle at Dickens, Michelle started worrying. No one could get through to her via phone. I called the emergency contact on her faire reg form and spoke to a friend of hers who just informed me of the news. The hospital would not give out any particulars.

As she and Phil Johnson were close, Phil is going to speak to her friend as well and see if he can get any more details or other contacts. Sandy requested no services on her behalf but I'm sure that we will join together to remember her at the appropriate time this year.

All of us associated with the faire are very greatful for the generous time and devotion that Sandy gave to our event and she will be missed.
Her friend, Yumi, wanted to thank all of Sandy's friends and associates in the faire community who touched her life. It was where she wanted to be.

Wishing you all peace this season

so please...as you're driving through the lot headed from front gate to p-camp or where ever you're going, please try to go 5MPH. it's the safest for everyone. it doesn't kick up as much dust as going faster, it's easier to stop if there should be someone in the middle of the road, and it's just plain polite. thanks!

"PlayFaire Productions has just developed an organization (Molly may want to help me here) called the Renaissance Historical Institute that is aimed promoting the educational side of Northern, beginning in 2008. Here is a perfect opportunity for snobs to contribute to the change they so desire. The "higher-ups" are listening, it is just that they have a bigger picture to consider than the rest of us."

We use all "those" words, have themes of prostitution, sexual acts that are illegal in 12 states and forbidden Moose/Squirrel love. It this sounds ducky to you, pull up a bale & a pint! You're our kinds of people. If this offends you, I believe there is also a scripture reading and Puritan Picnic in a garlic patch in Gilroy that night.
Suspended Reality will perform after us and then Black & Pearls will commence with dancing to a DJ. Yes, there will be cool dance music. The Theme is Corsets and Corsages. Come on out and have a great entertaining evening!

Hello faire folk,
I am looking for faire jokes, stories, songs, parodies and variations that we might not sing in front of the crowds. I am looking for those song verses that we only sing at the end of day on those last weekends were we wont get in trouble for it.

If it is a random verse for drunken sailor you made up on the fly, Great! Does if have the bellman getting hit by a bus, cool. Even better. If it is dirty, talking about someone, something faire related or not I would love to know it. Want to make something new, now is the time. (and if anyone has other versions of the opening and closing parade song I would really love to know them)

Know a good or bad joke faire related but not (i.e. how many puritans does it take to screw in a light bulb…) I want to know it. Or want to make up a bunch of bad ren faire jokes. Now is your chance.

Ever tell the young faire brats stories of the night life (which may or may not be true), or of the privy monster, or the dragon in the maze. I want to know it.

Basiclly all those little things we say, sing, talk about and put on pins that only we as faire people really understand. I would like to know and I think others would be interested too. So message me or just reply here.

Why? I am taking a folklore class at CSU Sacramento and will be writing a paper about the folklore we have. Some who did the Casa Faire this year may remember the pink surveys I passed out and thank you greatly to those that responded. I would like to write down some of the things we say, do, sing and joke about that haven’t been written yet. I would like others to understand who we are and why we spend so much time and money and energy and life on faire. So if you would please help me out for class if for no other reason that would be wonderful.

And please don’t worry I am faire brat of the days of Blackpoint I would never write or do anything to hurt faire or who we are. This is strictly an academic adventure for my teacher and many things will be edited in the final drafts.

Thank you
Sarah

And yes this has been cross posted to many faire type tribes for maximum reply possibilities. And if you make up something new please claim it as your own and I will credit your work.

I just want to say thank you to all the wonderful participants who let me run around as Puck this year. This wasn't my first Northern faire, but it was my first as the infamous hobgoblin, and I had a blast. Molly told me closing weekend that I had received a multitide of compliments, and that just filled me with all sorts of warm fuzzies. Puck is one of my dream roles, and though I've been in Midsummer's twice and done the final mechanical scene of "Pyramus & Thisbe" more times than I can count, this was the first time I got to play that shrewd and knavish sprite called Robin Goodfellow. I also felt much more a part of the family than I ever had before. Thank you all very much.

And if I met you, or if we played together, or heck you just want to get to know me, please add me to your freinds list. I want to be able to remember everyone's name when I come back next year:) (hopefully as puck again)

Your Majesty,

It is time for the first of my reports as the head of your Queen Loving Squirrel resistance from Chipping Under Oakwood.

Our efforts are going well… I am pleased to report that we have enlisted three more recruits into your efforts. Each has been armed with a rapier, false documents, and the secret decoder ring.

It is with great regret that I must inform you of the loss of agent Davies.. He gave his life disarming an IEP (improvised Explosive Pinecone) that was set to go off in front of your procession. He left behind his loving wife Charma… and his 27 children.. I would name them all.. but they are all named Bucky… like their father.. in George Forman fashion. His body was laid to rest.. in the Queen’s garden.. next to the begonias. His eldest son.. Bucky.... has taken up his position as third wing commander.

In accordance with your wishes… NONE of local squirrels from Willington have continued with the same efforts as did two weekends ago.. when they were able to take that one woman’s legs our from under her… the one known as Mistress Katarina Anders… and have her land on her tush. She nearly took one or two of your secret army out when she landed.. but our forces are too quick footed.

I know you have always despised us…But with Lady Frances Clifford’s help.. we will continue to earn back your love.

With highest regards.. and respect, and secrecy
Viva La Resistance… Long Live the Queen. Long love the Tail!

Your humble servant,
