Given the great low light capability of my camera, I was thinking for the next Casbah using two hotlights (instead of strobes). This will produce a nice, warm soft light on the dancers as well as anyone who wants to shoot video will be able to take advantage of them as well (hotlights are typically used for videos or studio shots where high shutter speeds are not a priority).
What do you guys think?

Re: Lighting at the next Casbah
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 3:18 PMI'm down with that. It's interesting to look at the evolution of Casbah Lounge lighting... -

Re: Lighting at the next Casbah
Tue, December 9, 2008 - 4:35 PMReally, the light from the overheads was fine, photographically speaking but if it doesn't work for the people dancing under it then I gotta figure something else out and I really don't like using flash :).

Re: Lighting at the next Casbah
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 10:15 AMThe hotlights sound like a good idea. Flash is too harsh and not to mention blinding. The overhead lighting worked ok but I noticed it still creates a slightly harsh and yellowish effect.
Would the hotlights have any impact on the size of the dance space? I seems to be shrinking a bit each time I've been there. -

Re: Lighting at the next Casbah
Wed, December 10, 2008 - 4:16 PMI'd park the hotlights in the back with softboxes on them and probably aim them up at the ceiling as they are still fairly bright, especially head on. -

Re: Lighting at the next Casbah
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 10:53 AMThere I go writing half-baked posts again. Experiment by having them in the corner, and pointing down onto the dance area and then have someone check and see if they're just too much. If not, then that would obviously be better (less loss of light). But if so, then I'll bounce them off the ceiling. -

Re: Lighting at the next Casbah
Tue, December 16, 2008 - 2:53 PMI like the idea of bouncing them off the ceiling, Scott. I think that would make nice dance lighting as well - two birds, one stone, eh?
