Shimmy Off details

So, several years ago on the Gypsy stage at Cairo Carnival in Glendale, CA, I saw a shimmy competition that was such fun that I wanted to recreate it for us. Here are t he deets for those who are curious -

VERY informal!
Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, can compete. No costume needed. If your hubby/signif, sibling, co-worker etc. wants to have some fun, teach them a basic shimmy and let them come enter!

$5 entry fee goes to The Center for Violence Free Relationships in El Dorado County.

The event will take approx. 15 min. You will be asked to pick up a shimmy and keep it going the entire time while I call out other moves to layer on top. The trick is, those other moves might not be bellydance moves at all. ;-)

It is just a bit of silly fun to raise $ for charity for our effort at "Hips are for Helping."

Peace and I'll see you all there!!

This year our first party is going to be an extravaganza of exotic rhythms, swirling colors, and dynamic performances. Not only are the belly dancers showing up in full regalia, but Brazilian dancers and drummers are also sharing the beautiful culture of South America. This year is going to be a full experience: you will not only to be able to learn the dances and rhythms at Lotus D'Or Studios, but also to apply what you've learned at the best party this side of the American River!

I have had a ton of cancellations over the past few days. Something in the air I guess. So, here is a modified lineup for Saturday night.

Just to let everyone know, the final donation count from Saturday night for the Earth Foundation was $240!! That is enough to buy over an acre of Rain Forest in Costa Rica.
That is fantastic!
Special thanks to Fajera because I feel that her warm greeting of everyone as they came in the door and great job explaining what the money was going for really help boost those donations.

Thx Fajera!!!

Let's go camping. :-p

This is going to all of you who know Scott Schappell, our photographer for the Casbah Lounge, and those who attended the show Sat night -
Please help me determine something special we can do for this terrific guy!

On the way home Sat night, Scott fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his new car. Luckily, it was a single car accident. He will be fine and so with the car, with much work. I fell horrible that this happened.
Any suggestions on something we can do for him?

And, this goes without saying, there will be a delay in getting our photos, which I am sure none of us with have an objection.

Email me with ideas.
Peace and be safe out there,
Vahana

Belly Dance Name Help

Okay, so, I am now in the process of trying to find a name for perfomances. I have looked at a list of names and nothing is really striking me as,"Oh my gosh that is the name I need to have."

So, I am coming here to get some help. I would like to hear your stories on how you got your bellydance name to help inspire me. Or, if you know a really good site for names maybe you can give me the link.

Thanks for any help,

I have a favor to ask of you. Any money you collect for my photos that are over $80 (that's how much gas costs me for the trip), please donate it to a breast cancer charity of your choice. I'd like to use this as an opportunity to give something back.

details

So, I was recently asked for the details for the April Casbah Lounge show and since we only have a little over one month, here they are:

MUSIC -
Time limits - 5 minutes for students/non pros
7 min for pros
10 mins troupes
Amber has been loaned some excellent sound equipment by her friend, so she will be managing the sound

Music in cd format and on ONE CD. Only your dance track on the cd, please.

Middle Eastern influenced music only. Contact me if you have any questions about this. This really is a broad category. (December is our "alternative" show)

STAGE -
area along wall where dancers used to sit on tables, is now the "stage" area. Still on the hard concrete floor, but your audience will be in front of you. I'll get dimensions when I am there this week.

The stage area will be decorated in Middle Eastern theme to enhance our photographs. No glare to interfere with Scott's work.

DONATION -
This is an Earth Day fundraiser. $5 at the door donation for Earth Foundation
I need a volunteer to sit at the door and collect since just leaving the donation container last time did not work out. (No one wil be turned away for not paying though. This is a FREE event)

CHECK IN-
BY 6:30 p.m.!

If you don't sign up in advance, you won't be able to dance. No walk-ins this time, sorry.

PHOTOGRAPHY -
We are blessed with the talented Scott Schappell (Scott Schappell Photographics) who comes all the way from the Bay Area as a favor to me, personally. So, please follow Scott's requirements -

- Flash will be used, so be advised. It is not disturbing to the dancers at all, but if you don't want flash, he will not photography you so tell him in advance.

- No photography except only for the dancer(s) you personally know and have permission from.

- reminder that Scott is EXTREMELY generous in giving you full rights to your photos, so please share the quality professional photos with family and friends and tell your friends and family they can sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

- Cost per dancer for photography is $15. If you don't pay in advance at the time you check-in, Scott will NOT be taking your photos. This is to avoid the situation in Dec when Scott's fuel chages were not every covered. UGH. We LOVE this man and appreciate him so much, so be sure to pay!

- Your photos will be available within about 2 weeks via direct download that Scott will send to you.
- for $5, if you cannot download, you will get them on cd mailed to you.

WAIVERS -
Dancers will need to complete a liability waiver form prior to performing. Please email me in advance at dancingesquire@yahoo.com and I can send you a waiver to print, sign, and bring with you. If you have previously performed at the Casbah Lounge, your form is already on file.

MISC -
Consider foot covering since the floor is notoriously dirty (yes, we mop, it still makes your feet really, realy black)

lit candles are fine.

Anything else you need to know, just post here or email me.
Thx!
Vahana

Just announced - program advertising!

This Casbah Lounge will have a new feature -
A PROGRAM! (so you don't have to see my mug every 5 mins)

This will also save time, as you will go in the order of the program and I won't have to spend time announcing each dancer. A bit more impersonal - yes. But, we'll give it a try this time. Remember, the Casbah Lounge is still a baby and hasn't even celebrated its one-year birthday!

So, business card ads are available in the program for $5 to offset the cost of printing.

Any one interested?

Let me know a.s.a.p. so you can get your card to me.

Any type of business if fine - doesn't need to be BD related.

Goals

Since I have been sick, and didn't want to share my germs with everyone else. I've been able to take some time to really consider some clear goals for dance in the new year.
The list is a bit long, but everything on it is rather easily attainable. Which I am pleased with.
Some of the things on there are just correcting things that are in place.

Does anyone else have goals?... Have you written them down?.. Do they feel attainable for you?

Photos for 12/1

Due to equipment difficulties I've decided that the photographs for 12/1 are free of charge to all dancers. If you already paid Vahana, keep note of it and your payment for 12/1 will apply to the Casbah Lounge in spring (though the amount will probably increase to $15 to make sure I can at least cover the fuel cost). If you won't be dancing in Spring let Vahana know and I will refund your $10. If you did pay and would rather have a refund, please let Vahana know so she can send me a list of who to refund since she currently knows who has already paid.

I will be making a ZIP file available for download that will have all the dancers' photographs and I will provide CDs as needed.

This is quite a bit smaller than the other file from the other Casbah. Mainly due to there being fewer pictures, but also do to a change in work flow. I've found that converting RAW files from the camera into JPEGs gives a nice reduction in file size without loss of quality.

Also, using the bounce flash off the ceiling wasn't quite as nice as the studio strobes, it still worked better than I thought it would and it also served the purpose of removing the background elements more (and you can see in the photos that it's pretty unlikely those across from me were getting hammered by the flash).

Enjoy and as always comments are welcome!

Oh What a Night!

A humble "thank you" to everyone for their support and participation last night. This was the biggest Casbah Lounge show ever - and, of course, not without a few glitches. Everyone was understanding about the sound system difficulty and H did a great job of holding it all together by the skin of her teeth. All the dancers were amazing, enjoyable to watch, and I could see that every performer really did their best. I can't tell you how much that meant to me.

Spring won't be as big as this was since the Holiday Casbah is our "Big" show of the year.

So, good news is you won't have to hire a babysitter for 7 hours, LOL, but the bad news will be that dance time slots will be more limited. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
(If you told me last night you wanted to dance in the Spring, don't worry, you are already on the list!)

Please, remember Scott Schappell and get your photo $ to him a.s.a.p. I only had $40 for him last night, which would be only 4 dancers - there were a lot more of us than that! So, please contact Scott either here on tribe or directly and get the $ to him soon. It is a wonderful thing that he does coming all the way to little El Dorado for us, so I really want to make sure we cover his gas and pay for our shots. Thankx to Amber for picking up Scott's tab at dinner since I "conveniently" couldn't find my purse. :-)

Also, there is still time to donate to the Sierra Wildlife Rescue, so if you had any friends who came but said, "didn't know where to put the donation $,"as I heard from a few people, please please have them send it my way. We raised $83, but with all the folks in attendance, I know we can do a bit more than that.

Next Casbah Lounge date will be coming soon, so keep watching tribe and myspace for bullitins.

Peace,
Vahana

Vahana and I had a conversation about this a short while back. So, I was thinking about bringing this here. It may show up other places.
Each post begins with "Belly dance taught me"... and you must answer 5 things it's taught you... about life and living
Since we have a little time between now and the next Casbah.. I figured this could be fun!

OK, now that some of you have seen the photos I would like feedback on what you would like to see next time and also how the strobes worked for you. They worked very well for me, I had plenty of light to work with, but I wanted to know if they annoyed you as a dancer. The feedback at the event was along the lines of "were you even using them?" which means I did my job and set them up correctly, but I wanted to make certain.

For those that ordered the DVDs, I wanted to wait until all the orders came in before sending them out. Since it seems I have all orders, I will be burning them tomorrow morning and getting them in the mail. They will be sent via USPS priority mail, so you should receive them Tuesday at the latest.

Cheers!

Next Casbah Lounge - Dec. 1st!

Greetings,
The next Casbah Lounge at Annabelle's Chocolate Lounge will be Sat, Dec. 1st., 7 p.m. to 9ish
It is not necessarily holiday themed, but if you would like to - then more power to ya.
Also, as usual, Middle Eastern Music and no goth, please. But the exception will be that if you wish to dance to holiday music, be it Christmas, Hannuka, Kwanzza, whatever, we'll make an exception in the spirit of the season.

NEW ADDITION:
Also in the spirit of the season, we will be holding this Casbah Lounge as a fundraiser to benefit the Sierra Wildlife Rescue. Their main office is located directly behind Annabelle's and I have had some contact with the organization and was very impressed. More info on the fundraising part will come later. Probably a "donation at the door" type of thing, but I might also dance with a pot on my head and have donations placed in the pot. Just brainstorming right now.

Peace,
Vahana

Okay, so how does everyone feel about either November 17th, the weekend before Thanksgiving,
or December 1st, for the next Casbah Lounge?
Both dates are on Saturday nights.

This would be our last Casbah Lounge until probably May 2008 since the roads get pretty icy here at night during the winter.

Heya! Just doing the final run of edits on the images (web resizing) then I'll have a zip file ready to send to Vahana and whoever else that wants one. 395 images were captured of the event, about 1.83 gigabytes worth. Instead of doing a separate zip file for each dancer, there's only going to be one that includes all dancers.

photography at next Casbah Lounge

We have the wonderful opportunity to have a professional and experienced bellydance photography at our next Casbah Lounge on Aug. 25th. If every dancer could commit to paying $10 toward his cost for coming from the Bay Area, we would be able to have Scott Schappell bring his talent to us. Scott has photographed many great dancers as well as been the photographer for many major bellydance events in Northern California. You can see some of his work on my myspace website, plus many other dancer sites. He takes a large number of photos that you purchase from him as downloads or on disc for a very reasonable fee.

This is a great opportunity, but we need to help him with his costs for coming all the way to Placerville from the Bay.
Let me know if you are interested in this so I can book Scott right away.

Peace,
Vahana

How incredibly proud and thankful I am to everyone who participated, danced, assisted, promoted, attended, or just plain supported the Casbah Lounge. This was my dream, and it is rare in someone's life that they get to see their dream come to fruition as I did on Friday night. For that, I am eternally thankful to each and every one of you.

In fact, so much so that I think I might have been dreaming and that it never happened. lol But I know we had one of Placerville's most memorable events all due to all of you sharing in my dream.

For those of you who were at the Casbah Lounge Friday night, you might have seen that I struggled in areas with the sword balancing. For the first time in my life, I was nervous when I performed. I felt the pressure of being the promoter, the creator, and the teacher that night. But when my hand shook, I took a deep breath and I heard Princess Farhana's voice in the back of my mind, "slow it down. You can do this." What a loving and supportive atmosphere we created that night!!!

Thank you every member of Jewels of the North, Annabelle, Stacy, Heather, Nancy, Sara and Rochelle, Charlene, Yuning, Janene, Janene's mommy (lol), Carolina, Trish, and Donna. With a very special thank you to Amber, who tolerated so many late night calls and IM's that there are too many to list here. You are all incredible people who provided me with incredible support!

My wish for all of you . . . "I hope you dance."

Until next time! (shall we say, Sept when eveyrone is back from summer vacations?????)

Peace,
