In May the CastIron Carousel will be shutting its doors forever. All props, backdrops, sets and puppets will be going up for sale at auction. The design shop that built the Carousel will also be closing down and so Tools, materials and paints, etc. will also be up for sale. The Stage itself will be sold or donated to another puppet organization that can use it to better advantage.
The CastIron Carousel Marionette Troupe, Inc., is experiencing some growing pains. We are looking at many options for the future. One direction may be to expand and the other to scale back for a period of time. During this period of instability the Troupe will not be performing shows or events. The CIC will still be developing new plays and rehearsing for performances in the future. At this time there is no definitive date for our next performance. Any information regarding the troupe's future engagements will be posted here first.
Greetings,
The CastIron Carousel Marionette Troupe immediately seeks painters for photo-realistic backdrops and props! We are currently producing our 2007-2008 play and we need skilled artists to complete it. This is a great volunteer opportunity to build your portfolio and work on a unique project with fun-loving, creative people!

We need a few local artists to help craft the set, clothing and props. This is a highly detailed, science fiction, steampunk-style world. We need clever, creative people with a finely attuned attention to detail, the ability to problem solve on the fly and the ability to work fast.

We need help with the following tasks:
- Set creation and prop building. (like crafting doll house furniture)
- Clothing for the puppets. (Victorian era garments in 1/4": scale)
- Painting of backdrops and set pieces. (highly detailed production painting)
- Shadow puppet makers. (drawing and cutting skills)
- A Flash animator with the ability to composite.

He sounds impressed.

I laugh. But later, as I sit in the darkness of the Someday Lounge, packed shoulder to shoulder with dozens of people, watching the story of a man who loves -- and I mean loves -- his cat and his dog, I realize that my friend may not have been so far off with his puppets-and-inhibitions theory. A little extreme, but not so far off.

Before the night is over we will see puppets on meth, puppets giving birth, puppets committing siblicide.

"Join us puppets in our drunken chicanery," urges the evening's emcee, a nattily dressed ventriloquist's dummy (well, really a man, named Noah Mickens, made up to look like a ventriloquist's dummy, the thin black lines of a hinged mouth traced along his cheeks).

He is top-hatted and turned out in a pinstriped suit, caressing a bottle of Chardonnay throughout the night. "The puppeteer who lives inside a glass bottle will relieve you of the lofty brains that complicate and obfuscate what you need to perform," he says.

Yes, there's plenty of chicanery. But the night also brings moments of strange and unexpected beauty: man and puppet, seemingly fused, the puppet hanging from the man's neck, illuminated only by a light on the man's head. They dance together in the dark as one, accompanied only by the sound of breathing.

(The man, Dan Luce, who has engineered the puppet to respond to his movements, has one of the most poetic bios in program. He is, it says, "fascinated by the profound beauty inherent to sorrow, insecurity, and other generally undesirable aspects of the human condition.")

I am sucked in by the exquisite marionettes of CastIron Carousel, creatures unsettling and touching all at once, jerking and twitching inside a small stage designed to look like a laboratory. Although at one point I can see a hand hovering in the air above them, it does not break the spell; I feel like I have literally crawled inside their odd little world of misguided experiments, pneumatics, gears, mad scientists and smoke.

I find myself believing, too, just as fiercely in a puppet fashioned from plastic bags that dreams of winning a cruel talent show, only to see its hopes dashed by a Twinkie that sings "America the Beautiful."

I study the Twinkie, its mouth open wide, exhaling a high note, and I feel strangely happy, even though I have yet to visit the bar.

So, I think this is what happens when we are cut loose of our strings.

If this has piqued your curiosity about puppetry, Tears of Joy offers some family friendly fare you can catch right now: "The Shoemaker and his Elves" runs through Feb. 18. Some more experimental fare returns to the Someday Lounge, 125 N.W. Fifth Ave., March 1-3, with "The Vertigo of Sheep." See www.tojt.com for more information.

Drunk Puppet Nite went very well on Saturday night. We were neither the most gruesome act nor the more prestidigeous marionettests but I think we held our own amongst the vomit jokes and existential ponderances of the others involved. We had as perfect a performance as one could have ever hoped for and in front of a packed audience. Sound was excellent, no strings broke, no gears popped off of the machine. Not only that but we had a record fast strike time packing up the stage and loading it into the car. I'm amped for the next one!

New members to the CastIron Carousel came by the shop tonight to play with puppets and rehearse "The Horrible House of Dr. Hadrian" in preperation for Drunk Puppet Night.
It was great! Folks shared their arts, talents puppets and good energy. Facilitated by snacks and mutual interests, we ran through the act we will be performing, the workings of the stage and a little bit of puppeteer training. We worked out some of the kinks in the play, the expected hurdles and details to overcome. The best part is that we all worked together well. This play does not *yet* offer much for everyone to do but it's a great springboard for each person to dip a toe into the water and see if he likes it.
I can see that this group of talented people will have little trouble working together on future plays to create something truely incredible.
I am so excited to see what we can do!

The CastIron Carousel has come a long way this year starting with our two performances at Drunk Puppet Nite last February. For that show we had to build a new smaller, more portable stage. Once finished with DPN we started on our new show, "The Horrible House of Dr. Hadrian" which was commisioned for the Fright Town Haunted house at Portland's Memorial Coliseum. In this show we broke new ground with effects and story telling devices. We hope to continue breaking new ground as we update the Horrible House for the road and start work on our next show.
